    Highly automated and fully autonomous vehicles are much more likely to be accepted if they react in the same way as human drivers do, especially in a hybrid traffic situation, which allows autonomous vehicles and human-driven vehicles to share the same road. This paper proposes a human-like motion planning model to represent how human drivers assess environments and operate vehicles in signalized intersections. The developed model consists of a pedestrian intention detection model, gap detection model, and vehicle control model. These three submodels are individually responsible for situation assessment, decision making, and action, and also depend on each other in the process of motion planning. In addition, these submodels are constructed and learned on the basis of human drivers' data collected from real traffic environments. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed motion planning model, we compared the proposed model with actual human driver and pedestrian data. The experimental results showed that our proposed model and actual human driver behaviors are highly similar with respect to gap acceptance in intersections.

    Pedestrian-vehicle conflicts are one of the most important safety concerns at signalized intersections especially in urban areas. Conflicting vehicles and pedestrians select their maneuvers by predicting the other user behavior. Sudden behavioral changes of pedestrians such as sudden speed change (acceleration or deceleration) cannot be predicted by drivers, which can lead to safety hazards especially if these sudden behavioral changes occur near conflict areas. In this study, continuous pedestrian speed profiles were analyzed at signalized crosswalks to investigate the existence of such behavioral changes. A methodology is proposed to identify significant sudden changes of pedestrian speeds. The locations and timings of these sudden speed change events were analyzed, and the influencing factors such as crosswalk geometry and signal timing were studies and evaluated. Five signalized crosswalks at three intersections in Nagoya City were videotaped for analysis. Individual pedestrian maneuvers were extracted with image processing software. Empirical analysis showed that sudden acceleration events were observed at the entrance points to the pedestrian-vehicle conflict area, which highlights the significance of these events to pedestrian-vehicle conflict analysis. A multinomial logit model was developed to estimate the probability of a pedestrian making a sudden speed change as a function of different influencing factors. The results implied that the entering speed, necessary speed to finish crossing before the onset of the pedestrian signal red phase, and crosswalk length have a significant impact on speed change choices. This paper presents important suggestions to understanding pedestrian maneuvers in detail from the viewpoint of safety. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    This research explores communication between pedestrian and vehicles on road space. This specific research was conducted and analysed based on a series of experiments. As a result, it became evident that active communication from walkers to drivers is highly effective. More importantly, raising hands are more effective than eye contact and bowing for drivers to increase their attention to walkers. This research has also found that cooperative behavior between walkers and drivers are deeply influenced by the speed of automobiles and the act of raising hands. In other words, the faster automobile is, the less we witness cooperative behavior between the two actors. It empirically shows that increasing communication between walkers and drivers will be a valid way to decrease the number of car accidents in the near future.

    This paper proposes an approximation method of expected delay for signalized arterial roads. This method is based on variational theory of traffic flow (VT). In VT under stochastic demands, traffic flow dynamics is described as the solution of the stochastic shortest path problem. However, it is difficult to solve exactly. We, thus, propose the approximation method using the following two procedures: (i) solution space reduction based on the characteristics of the shortest path; (ii) Clark approximation. As a result of the experimental comparison with a Monte Carlo simulation, the error of the proposed method is extremely small.

    交差点におけるタンデムソーティング戦略 (TSS) は,右折・左折専用現示のある交差点における容量増強のアプローチである.この戦略では,ある現示の車両のみ交差点に到達できるよう上流部の信号で制御を行うため,それらの車両をより多くの車線を利用して効率的に捌くことができる.ただし,現示間の需要の偏りが大きい場合など,上流信号におけるスプリットがある一定値を越えると,交差点の捌け量が低下する.本研究では,こうした状況におけるケーススタディを行う.その結果,(1) 捌け量の低下が生じている場合でもなおTSS がない場合に比べてTSS 導入時の容量が高い,(2) TSS 導入時のサイクル長を短くすることにより,容量の増加と信号遅れの削減が同時に達成できることがわかった.

    Access roads of transfer points, such as railway stations, can be a bottleneck due to conflicts between different road users coming to the transfer stations. Congestions from the bottleneck may propagate to other arterial roads. Kiss-and-ride vehicles, as one of the user types, are able to choose their stop positions freely on the access road, while their characteristics and how they affect on congestions are unknown. The purpose of this research is to clarify the relationship between stop position choice behavior of picking- up or dropping-off vehicles and queueing patterns at the access road, and to build a simulation model which quantitatively represents the queueing phenomena. From the survey data analysis, it was found that distribution of stopping duration varies by time of the day and the double parking of vehicles with relatively shorter stopping duration causes queue occurrence. The proposed simulation with stopping position choice including double-parking maneuver was able to represent various queueing patterns at the access road.

    This research aims to propose indices to evaluate the quality of services (QOS) of pedestrian crossing flow under both congested and uncongested conditions. Walking costs in crossing flows, which are not properly validated by conventional fundamental diagrams, are described by walking stability indices. The empirical data analysis revealed that the angle between directions of two pedestrian crossing flows has significant impact on QOS. A microscopic pedestrian behavior model, which represents the above characteristics, is proposed to evaluate QOS under different traffic demands and crossing angles.

    It is of great importance to analyze right-turning behavior at signalized intersection given high accident records related to right-turn vehicles, which also helps provide valuable insights into safety assessment of signalized intersection. This study aims to analyze the right-turn vehicle behavior in protected right-turn phase by considering the influencing factors of geometric characteristics and signal operation. It was found based on empirical modeling results that the right-turn vehicle behavior is closely related to geometric characteristics such as intersection angle and setback distance of stop bar. Furthermore, in order to make a balance of both positive and negative impact, the potential strategies may bring upon safety performance of signalized intersection, all the influencing factors related to right-turn behavior were summarized and evaluated.     Quantifying the effects of crosswalk length and signal timing on pedestrian walking speed is an important requirement for providing a rational safety assessment at signalized intersections. This study investigates the effects of pedestrian green time (PG), crosswalk length and pedestrian crossing direction on pedestrian walking speed at signalized crosswalk. It is assumed that the pedestrian walking speeds consist of two components v1 and v2 at two consecutive halves of crosswalk. Empirical analysis shows that the longer crosswalk tends to induce the higher walking speed. Pedestrian walking speed increases as PG proceeds. Furthermore, a comparison of pedestrian speed models for PG and PF (pedestrian flashing green time) demonstrates that pedestrian walking speeds at PF are higher and more variable than at PG. The sensitivity analysis helps understand how these models behave depending on change of each variable.

    Pedestrian crossings are facilities for pedestrians to cross at at-grade intersections or road sections safely. At unsignalized crossings, pedestrian safety is ensured by clarifying pedestrian priority with zebra markings, and by improvement to visibility and speed control with refuge islands and other road structures. At signalized crossings, pedestrian crossing right of way is given through the green signal indication, which is often provided only when activated by pedestrians using push buttons, to reduce vehicle delays by unnecessary pedestrian green times. These signalized crossings are of various types (such as Pelican, Puffin, Toucan, Pegasus, and Hawk crossings) according to different signs and detection systems. At signalized intersections, pedestrian and vehicle movements are separated by different arrangements of phasing plans including exclusive pedestrian phases (scramble crossings) to avoid frequent conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles for safety improvement.

    単路部の歩行者死亡事故の多くは横断歩道外での横断(乱横断)による.自動車交通の円滑性を損ねずに乱横断を防ぐためには,二段階横断を含む無信号横断施設を,周辺信号交差点の影響を考慮しつつ適切に設置する必要がある.
    本研究は,バーチャルリアリティ実験による歩行者の横断位置・タイミング選択行動要因の定量化と,自動車交通への影響評価を通じ,円滑性と安全性を両立させる無信号横断施設の設置要件の提案を目指す.
    市街地の単路部では,自動車交通量が多く隣接信号交差点があるにも関わらず,横断歩道を利用しない横断(乱横断)が発生し,安全上の問題となることがある.二段階横断施設をはじめとした無信号横断施設の設置検討を効率的に行うためには,既存信号交差点の影響を踏まえたうえで,乱横断が発生しやすい条件を整理する必要がある.本研究は,市街地の幹線道路区間において,隣接する信号交差点との相互の影響や,歩行者の乱横断の選択行動を踏まえ,安全性と円滑性を両立する単路部横断施設の設置位置や施設形式を提案することを目的とする.
    2021年度は,まず信号交差点のある駅前道路を対象にビデオ観測調査を行い,歩行者の移動経路と横断位置・横断時刻選択行動要因を分析した.その結果,歩行者の経路は,駅前道路到着時の信号交差点の信号表示や車群到着状況に応じて変わる傾向が見られた.また,信号交差点から遠い位置で横断する人の一部は,遅れを小さくするように横断位置を変更していることが分かった.
    さらに,現地観測調査の交通環境を模擬した,種類の異なる無信号横断施設を付加したバーチャルリアリティ(VR)環境を構築し,歩行経路選択行動の調査実験を通じて,無信号横断施設の設置位置や種類が個々の歩行者の横断位置選択に及ぼす影響要因を分析した.ロジットモデルによる分析の結果,無信号横断施設の中でも,横断歩道の路面標示がある施設の方が交通島のみのものに比べ選択されやすいことが示された.さらに,地図上での乱横断経路選択割合に比べると,VRの交通状況下で選択した乱横断の割合が高いこと,歩行者に近い側の車線に到着する車両の存在の有無によって乱横断行動が選択されることが示された.
    当初はバーチャルリアリティ(VR)実験の実施のみを想定していたが,現地調査と組み合わせて分析を行うことにより,VR実験での選択行動の妥当性も含めて検証を行うことができた.横断施設の位置や種類が横断行動に影響を及ぼすことを実証できており,当初計画の目的は達成できているといえる.
    その一方で,分析対象地が一か所であり,出発地・目的地が固定されているなど,限定的な内容にとどまっていることも課題である.追加的な実験・調査により,得られた知見の精査を行うことが必要と考えている.
    これらを総合的に判断し,おおむね順調に進展していると判断する.
    横断位置選択行動について,交通条件や出発・目的地の異なる場合の追加調査分析を行い,必要に応じてモデルの改良を行う.
    得られた横断位置選択行動の知見を交通シミュレーションに実装する.交通量や横断施設の種類・配置の異なるシナリオにて,交通シミュレーション上で自動車・歩行者の遅れ時間や乱横断頻度を求める.この結果を踏まえ,円滑性と安全性の両面から望ましい横断施設配置について整理する.
