    In this study, we attempted to prepare Ti-Mg and Ti-Ca alloy films by alloying Ti with bone-containing elements such as Ca and Mg, to develop new medical Ti materials with better bone formation ability than conventional Ti and Ti alloys. We succeeded in controlling the composition of the alloy films and clarified the relationship between the Ca and Mg concentrations and the crystal structure, surface properties, and biocompatibility of the fabricated alloy films; the addition of Ca or Mg resulted in faster formation of hydroxyapatite in simulated body fluids compared to Ti.

    In order to improve the durability of the superhydrophobic film, the microstructure necessary for the superhydrophobicity was prepared with silica particles and film, and its surface was coated by hydrophobic hard amorphous carbon to fabricate a highly durable superhydrophobic composite film with excellent strength and wear resistance.

    This research aims to develop novel mechanical coating materials consisting of carbon, boron and nitrogen, which is named “adamant” thin film coatings. Ternary diagram was described using measured data set of mechanical properties of various adamant films, and systematization of adamant films is performed on the diagram.
    Carbon contents has significant influence for the mechanical properties of adamant films. Nanoindentation hardness of the film sharply decreased when the carbon content exceeds 50at.%. In contrast, the thermal resistivity of the film was improved by decreasing the carbon content. It is interesting result that the wear resistance improves when small amount of B was added in DLC film. Moreover, adhesion of platelet was suppressed on the B containing amorphous carbon films. These results lead us to open novel mechanical coatings using adamant materials.

    In this study, in order to obtain good adhesion strength between Ti surface and new bone, Ti/amorphous carbon micropattern was fabricated since amorphous carbon has affinity for osteoblast and Ti has affinity for bone. To fabricate Ti/amorphous carbon micropattern, amorphous carbon films was deposited on Ti substrates by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Furthermore, it was immersed in an aqueous solution of fibronectin, which is a cell adhesion protein, and its adsorption was investigated. It was found that vacuum ultraviolet light irradiation increased the adsorption amount of fibronectin to the amorphous carbon film.
