    Carbon Nitride (CNx) coating was reported to show a superlow friction coefficient when it slid against a Si3N4 ball in nitrogen gas at atmospheric pressure. This superlow friction phenomenon occurred after a number of sliding cycles, in the so-called running-in period, due to the nitrogen atom desorption from the topmost CNx coating surface; its the surface became a graphite-like layer, and a transfer layer was formed on the counter material surface. However, a friction test and surface analysis should be conducted simultaneously, when detailed frictional phenomena including functional groups are observed on the topmost CNx surface. It was supposed that several functional groups were adsorbed on the topmost surface of the carbon system coating when the specimen was withdrawn from the synthesis chamber. In this study, we constructed a friction test apparatus in a FTIR analytic chamber to conduct friction tests and surface analysis without taking the friction test chamber out of the analytical chamber. The analysis results of 1500 cycles each indicated that the -OH or -NH functional group gradually increased with the number of sliding cycles. However, the group decreased suddenly as the friction coefficient decreased. Finally, these kinds of functional groups were not detected when the CNx coating showed superlow friction phenomena.

    Phase transition of CNx coatings by sliding against a Si3N4 ball has been studied by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to understand this super-low friction phenomena in N2. A pin-on-disk type tribometer was constructed to determine the tribological properties of this coating when sliding against a Si3N4 ball in N2. The analytical results by AES and XPS showed that the nitrogen atoms desorbed from the top layers of the coating, and that the layers changed to a graphite-like structure without nitrogen during a friction coefficient decrease to lower than 0.01. The structural transition of CNx is discussed in this paper.

    It was reported that CNx showed super-low friction coefficient less than 0.01 in N2. In this study, to clarify the possibility of super-low friction of CNx in air, friction tests in N2, O2, CO2, and Ar were carried out. Moreover, friction tests in each constant concentration of O2 and increasing concentration of O2 from 0 to 21% or decreasing from 21 to 0% were carried out to know the maximum concentration of O2 in ambient gas. Main results are the followings: (1) In the case of friction test carried out in O2, the transfer layer showed 7 times higher oxygen concentration than the transfer layer formed in N2. On the other hand, in the case of transfer layer indicating low concentration of oxygen, friction coefficient was lower than 0.05. (2) In order to obtain super-low friction coefficient less than 0.01, it was necessary that at least transfer layer should be formed in N2 (contained concentration of O2 lower than 0.01%) and the concentration of O2 at friction environment kept less than 2.0%.

    In order to know the running-in process for ultra low friction of CNx sliding against Si3N4 balls in N2, the effect of surface roughness of balls on friction coefficient was investigated. As results, it was shown that friction coefficient for all of Si3N4 balls decreased with sliding cycles and reached to the specific minimum values less than 0.05. For friction coefficient less than 0.01, smooth surface of ball with 30nm Ry as initial surface roughness was necessary. Smooth surfaces of CNx coating and Si3N4 ball after running-in provide ultra low friction after the transfer of tiny amount of CNx to Si3N4 ball and the generating of thin and uniform transfer film on balls.

    The diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were prepared from methane, benzene and toluene by thermal electron exited plasma CVD method. Micro-laser Raman analysis of three films showed a typical spectrum of DLC film. The hardness and hydrogen content of the film were 11-25 GPa and 23-29 at %, respectively. The tribological properties of three DLC films were investigated using a scratch tester, a Bowden-Leben type friction tester and a ball-on-disk type reciprocationg friction tester. The effects of raw materials on the tribological properties were confirmed. The difference in tribological properties of these three films seems to be related with their hardness. That is, the friction coefficient of the DLC film with low hardness was lower than that of the film with high hardness. On the other hand, when the hardness was increased, the specific wear rate of the DLC films appeared to decrease. The transferred films formed on mating material surfaces are supposed to play significant roles in the tribological properties of the DLC films.

    During the sliding between a-CNx and Si3N4, applying nitrogen as environmental gas provided very low friction as the level of 0.01 in friction coefficient. In order to know the effect of the running-in process on the reduction of the friction, the effect of surface roughness of mating surface on friction coefficient. Friction coefficient after running-in was proportional to the Ry value of wear scar of ball. Also smooth thin transferred layer was observed on the wear scar of balls with an AFM after sliding test. Those results showed the smoothing of wear scar of ball, the generating of the transferred layer from CNx was necessary for low friction.

    Frost generation on the heat exchangers of household refrigerators and other equipment impairs the freezer function, and heaters are used to defrost the equipment, resulting in unnecessary energy consumption. We have developed a method of creating microplastic texturing to prevent frost generation on surfaces, and have created a texturing with improved thermal conductivity by blending a carbon-based powder substance. We found that microplastic texturing can be created by agglomerating and solidifying polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with 1.0 vol.% carbon black (CB) in a solvent under an alternating electric field.

    Carbonaceous hard coatings as DLC and CNx are attracted keen attention to show not only high wear resistance but also ultra low friction. However oil lubrication does not provide ultra low friction for DLC. In order to overcome this issue, we measured reflectance spectrum at friction area of CNx in-situ in PAO oil. After the estimation of polarizability of PAO oil and transformed layer, we found that the friction coefficient has strong relationship to the polarizability of PAO oil and transformed layer, that leads to the increasing of van der Waals force between transformed layer and PAO oil. The1.4 times of increasing of product of both polarizabilities provided 20 % reduction of friction coefficient. Also XPS analysis of transformed layer of CNx confirmed the change of bonding status. And then MD simulation showed the possibility of the change of density and bonding structure of Carbonaceous hard coating during friction.

    To obtain artificial lubricant, DNA oriented from flora is expected to be alternative material of lubricant. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is one of the potential method to increase molecule. It was expected that in-situ observation of those DNA included lubricant with friction test could unearth the effect of those DNA on reduction of friction coefficient. Some of functional group is expected to absorb on a glass surface, then it acts to reduce friction force. To clarify the effect of those DNA on reduction of friction force, measurement of those absorbed materials by ultra-violet light is potential method to proof an existence of those absorbed molecule.

    To clarify an effect of oil additives on wear of Diamond-Like Carbon under lubrication, a friction test with in-situ observation to the contact point by using fluorescent stain method for imitation wear powders such as MoDTC, and measurement of DLC wear amount was conducted. As a result, imitation wear powders which diameter less than 1 um could enter into the contact point even if it was boundary lubrication condition, then those situation could enhance the wear of DLC. Especially, Mo2C had abrasive effect to enhance wear of DLC and also the MoDTC itself had wear acceleration effect. The mechanism of wear acceleration by MoDTC was assumed to be classified to chemical wear by Raman analysis.

    This study provided a fundamental technique of fabricating metallic nanocoil (NC) networks. The technique for mass-fabricating metallic NCs by assisting the release of residual stress, was originally developed by our research group, is referred to as “mechanical self-assembly”. Thermal decomposition of electrospun resin nanofibers (NFs) was used for releasing the inhomogeneous residual strain in the biased thick metal film coating on the NF. The process conditions were optimized to reduce the coil diameters down to around 1 micrometer. Transparent resin films containing Pt NC networks ware demonstrated for stretchable electrode and electromagnetic wave absorber, which would contribute to the information-technique-based society with safety.

    Carbonaceous hard coatings as DLC and CNx are attracted keen attention to show not only high wear resistance but also ultra low friction that is less than 0.01 of friction coefficient under severe sliding condition that liquid lubricants can not work. We developed two novel evaluation systems as the evaluation method of transformed layer of carbonaceous hard coatings with a reflective spectroscopy and the evaluation method of surface energy of sliding surface of carbonaceous hard coatings with an Environmental Scanning Spectroscopy. The first evaluation systems showed that thickness, roughness and mechanical properties of transformed layer of coatings governed ultra low friction phenomena with a thin solid film lubrication theory. The second evaluation system confirmed that low surface energy of sliding scar provided low friction properties. From both clear findings for ultra low friction of carbonaceous hard coatings, new carbonaceous hard coatings as ta-CNx coatings was proposed.
