    The goal of this research was to develop a method to measure the OAM of an electron beam and to conduct its application research. First, we developed a“Dammann vortex diffraction grating”-based detector (Noguchi et al., Phys. Rev. Applied, 2019). The developed“Dammann vortex diffraction grating” detector can simultaneously acquire OAM spectra. As one application of the measurement method, we measured the OAM generated by an electron beam passing through a nano-sized magnetic needle, and succeeded in measuring the OAM spectrum. We also proposed and demonstrated a novel convergent electron diffraction method using an electron beam with nonzero OAM as an incident beam (Saitoh et al., Microscopy, 2022).

    Coherent spin-polarized electron beam was applied to conversion probe-beam in a low-voltage scanning electron microscope to reduce chromatic aberration and enhance the spatial resolution of spin-resolved analysis. Alongside we succeeded in nano-structure analysis of magnetic materials and time-resolved measurement with pico-second temporal resolution using the newly developed electron microscopy. Consequently, our analytical methods can clarify dynamics of phase-transitions and relaxation process in the local state of magnetism. In contrast, considering the abilities of spin-polarization and long temporal and spatial coherent lengths that contribute to enhance the antibunching effect in an intensity interference measurement, we could reveal the spin-effect in the second-order interference term. These result in this project will open new spin-analysis involving quantum effects for nano-imaging of functional materials.

    We have developed an electron gun that generates structured electron beams having a specific amplitude and phase distribution by illuminating a semiconductor photocathode with structured light. An optical system that generates structured light with a specific intensity distribution was constructed using a spatial phase modulator and mounted on an electron microscope. It was confirmed that electron beams are generated by the structured light generated by the present optical system. We also conducted an intensity interference experiment using spin-polarized electrons, and found that electron beams with spin polarizations of ± 80% show anti-bunching phenomena which is not observed by electron beams with a spin polarization of 0%. In addition, we constructed a theory that describes the quantum interference effect and the breaking of Bell's inequality, and elucidated the mechanism by which weak values occur.
