We report the synthesis of a novel quinonesandwiched
porphyrin in which two benzoquinones are
connected oppositely at the meso positions of a porphyrin
    through rigid 3-amido 2,20-bipyridine linkers. 1H-NMR and
single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that the quinonesandwiched
porphyrin has a folded structure in which the
porphyrin unit was inserted into the two quinone moieties
via p-stacking. Insertion of a Zn(II) ion into the porphyrin
center induced a drastic conformational change which is
resulted in coordination of the oxygen atoms of both
benzoquinone moieties to the Zn-porphyrin to afford a
    6-coordinated structure.

Single molecular memory operation was observed on a porphyrin derivative by scanning tunneling microscopy at room temperature. A porphyrin derivative with four disulfide groups was chemically synthesized and chemisorbed on a Au(111) surface. Coulomb blockade behaviors and switching behaviors in current-voltage (I-V) characteristics were observed on a single porphyrin derivative by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Based on the switching behaviors, the memory operation of electrical conductance in the porphyrin derivative was demonstrated by applying a programmed pulse sequence with an on/off ratio of 2.9 at room temperature.

Photochemical cleavage reactions of 8-quinolinyl benzenesulfonate derivatives and related sulfonates in
aqueous solutions are reported. The 8-quinolinyl benzenesulfonates undergo photolysis upon photoirradiation at
300―330 nm to give the corresponding 8-quinolinols and benzenesulfonic acids with the production of only negligible
amounts of byproducts. The effects of substituent groups of the 8-quinolinyl moiety and the benzene ring
on the photolysis reactions were examined. Based on steady-state mechanistic studies using a triplet sensitizer, a
triplet quencher, and electron donors, it was suggested that the photolysis proceeds mainly via the homolytic
cleavage of S–O bonds in the excited triplet state.

    8-Benzenesulfonyloxy-5-N,N-dimethylaminosulfonylquinolin-2-ylmethyl-pendant cyclen (BS-caged-L4, BS ) benzenesulfonyl)
was designed and synthesized as a “caged" derivative of a previously described Zn2+ fluorophore,
    8-hydroxy-5-N,N-dimethylaminosulfonylquinolin-2-ylmethyl-pendant cyclen (L4) (cyclen ) 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane).
In the absence of metal ions and in the dark, BS-caged-L4 (10 μM) showed negligible fluorescence emission
    at pH 7.4 (10 mM HEPES with I ) 0.1 (NaNO3)) and 25 °C (excitation at 328 nm). Addition of Zn2+ induced an
increase in the UV/vis absorption of BS-caged-L4 (10 μM) at 258 nm and a significant increase in fluorescence
emission at 512 nm. These responses are results from the formation of Zn(H-1L4) by the hydrolysis of the sulfonyl
ester at the 8-position of the quinoline unit promoted by the Zn2+-bound HO-. Improvement of cell membrane
permeation in comparison with L4 is also described.

The ultimate bottom-up approach for the construction of functional nanosystems requires the precise arrangement of atoms and molecules in three dimensions. DNA is currently one of the most prominent molecules able to self-assemble into complex networks and is therefore regarded as the 'silicon of the nano-world'. Metals and metal ions, in contrast, are the atomic building-blocks needed in such materials to establish functions such as electrical conductivity or magnetism. Here we report a new concept, which efficiently combines metal ions and DNA. The DNA structure is used as a matrix to program robustly the complexation of different metal ions under precise control with regard to element, number and composition.

DNA photolyases are enzymes that catalyze photoreversion of cis,syn-thymine photodimer (T[c,s]T) by utilizing UV light. In this work, we have designed and synthesized Zn2+-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane complexes bearing a lumiflavin and l-tryptophan (ZnL3) or l-phenylalanine (ZnL4) as artificial DNA photolyases. We have found that (ZnL3)red, whose flavin unit was reduced in situ by Na2S2O4, accelerates the photoreversion of T[c,s]T utilizing near-UV light in aqueous solution at pH 7.6 and 11. Interestingly, more efficient photoreversion of T[c,s]T was achieved by UV irradiation of an oxidized form of ZnL3 [(ZnL3)ox] in the presence of an excess amount of Et3N at pH 11. UV-vis and fluorescence measurements and action spectra showed that an oxidized form of flavin of (ZnL3)ox was photoreduced by Et3N into its reduced form (ZnL3)red, which promoted the photoreduction of T[c,s]T. Comparison of the photochemical properties of ZnL3 with those of ZnL4 were also described.

We attempted to fabricate molecular machines based on the porphyrin/phthalocyanine face-to-face molecular conjugates connected through fourfold rotaxane structures. As a result of this research, the following finding which is considered to be useful for the future design of molecular machines were obtained. "Generally, an alkyl chain is considered to be a flexible molecular linker. Although a sufficiently long alkyl chain behaves flexibly like a molecular string, a short alkyl chain sometimes behaves like a molecule-sized scale because of the intrinsic rigidity."

We synthesized a multiply interlocked molecular assembly (M) with a novel topological structure in which a cofacial porphyrin dimer connected with four alkylammonium chains is quadruply interlocked by a phthalocyanine bearing four peripheral crown ethers. Since M has such a flexible structure that an alternative addition of an appropriate acid and a base resulted in its dynamic conformational change. It was demonstrated that M incorporates π-planer anions in its two isolated nanospaces in between a porphyrin and a phthalocyanine. It was also found that M showed unique molecular inclusion behavior in which a central phthalocyanine moves like a “slide door” to capture a guest molecule. This behavior is quite similar to the “induced fit” found in natural enzymes.

The aim of this study was generation of emerging flexible molecular functions through formation of dimentionally-controled discrete or consecutive molecular spaces in molecular assemblies constructed via self-assembly. We have obtained the research findings listed below. 1) Invention of stimuli-responsive spin arrays and molecular reaction fields which were formed by reversible self-assembly reactions. 2) Invention of novel liquid crystals of macrocyclic mesogens. 3) Two-dimensional molecular assemblies to form novel electronic materials and molecular recognition sites. 4) Invention of discrete three-dimensional molecular spaces surrounded by pai-conjugated walls as molecular recognition sites.
