    Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for monazite with a 25 nm carbon and a 10 nm gold coating to understand the effect of a coating film in quantitative electron probe microanalysis of monazite. Simulations show that carbon-coated monazite gave the same depth distribution function of the generated X-rays in the monazite as uncoated monazite, whilst gold-coated monazite gave a distorted depth distribution.

    This paper outlines the CHIME (chemical Th-U-total Pb isochron method) dating on the basis of precise electron microprobe analyses of Th, U and Pb in Th- and U-bearing accessory minerals such as monazite, xenotime, zircon and polycrase, and the age-mapping technique applicable to young monazite and zircon. The CHIME dating consists in measuring many spots within constant age domains showing sufficient compositional variation, and in constructing a "pseudo-isochron" from which an age can be obtained by regression. This method, coupled with discrimination of possibly concordant age data by chemical criteria like the (Ca+Si)/(Th+U+Pb+S) ratio for monazite and Ca and S contents for zircon, has the potential advantage of significant precision, and the ability to work with minerals having substantial initial Pb, and can identify two or more homogeneous domains that are separated by an age gaps smaller than the error on individual spot analysis of age. Many features that are insignificant in major element analysis can have major manifestation in acquired trace elements. Critical comments include the roles of collimator slit, detector gas, background estimation, accelerating voltage, probe current, X-ray interferences and count-rate in affecting the accuracy, and a way to access the Th and U interference correction without pure Th- and U-oxides or synthesized pure ThSiO<SUB>4</SUB>.

    The purpose of this study was to propose and validate a new method for studying metamorphic rocks by combining an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) system.
    We will focus on the following topics: 1) Detection of polycrystalline garnet porphyroblast in eclogite, 2) deciphering the deformation characteristics during exhumation stage recorded by garnet porphyroblast in metamorphic rocks formed under various pressure-temperature conditions, and 3) elucidation of the formation process of amphibole grains, which occur as pseudomorphs after garnet and omphacite in amphibolitized eclogites. In particular, we discuss the reasons for the formation of Si-poor amphibole in SiO2-saturated rocks.
