    Sintered bodies of SmS containing various dopants (Y, Ce, Nd, etc.) has been successfully grown by an original method, which is a solid-phase reaction method that enables growth at low temperature and in a short time compared with the conventional method. It was found that these sintered bodies develop a large isotropic negative thermal expansion from a higher temperature than previously reported. Moreover, the difference in the temperature at which the valence transition occurs between the pressure-induced and element-substituted cases was explained from the viewpoint of the electronic state by reflectivity spectroscopy using the single crystals. Furthermore, the system that enables simultaneous measurement of nonlinear conduction and strain induced by an electric field was constructed. Using this system, direct measurement of the strain associated with the valence transition by the electric field was verified for the first time for SmS.

    With the recent development of industrial technology, thermal expansion has become a significant phenomenon. Negative thermal expansion materials, which shrink elastically when heated, are attracting attention as a method of controlling thermal expansion. One approach to developing negative thermal expansion materials is to create negative thermal expansion by appropriately laying out multiple materials with different thermal expansion coefficients and vacancies. We have developed a composite material that produces planar negative thermal expansion using a general-purpose multi-material 3D printer. However, due to the temperature dependency of the raw material, the temperature range in which the designed negative thermal expansion can be realized is narrow. In this study, we prepared negative thermal expansion composites using thermally stable metals instead of photocurable resins.

    We have improved the functionality and elucidated the mechanism of negative thermal expansion (NTE) in Ca2RuO4-y, which shows a huge NTE due to the material microstructural effects consisting of anisotropic thermal deformation of crystal grains and voids. By substituting Ru with Fe or Sn, the operating-temperature range could be expanded while maintaining the volume change related to NTE. Detailed electron diffraction and synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction experiments have shown that the alignment and melting of electron orbitals associated with the previously overlooked monoclinic strain is essentially important. We found the Cu2V2O7 system as a NTE material with the same microstructural effect as Ca2RuO4-y, and succeeded in producing fine particles with a particle size of about 1 μm and exhibiting NTE characteristics comparable to bulk by the spray-drying method.

    We achieved giant isotropic negative thermal expansion (NTE) with volume change up to 3.4%, via control of the electronic configuration in Sm atoms of SmS, (4f)6 or (4f)5(5d)1, by partial replacement of Sm with Y. The present total volume change related to NTE is the largest among isotropic NTE materials. Isotropic NTE has a great merit from the viewpoint of engineering, because it can avoid strains or defects and, therefore, the NTE function is stable against repeated thermal cycling. Volume control of lanthanide monosulfides via tuning of the 4f electronic configuration provides us with a new avenue for volume control of a material.
