本研究は現代東南アジアの宗教の動態を、宗教の制度化と断片化との相互作用という視点から明らかにすることをめざすものである。そうした動態を明らかにすべく、既存教団による周辺的要素の取り込みないし排除（制度化）と、それに逆行する現象としての教団的宗教の断片化という二つの力学に着目する。東南アジアは宗教面からみた場合、大陸部仏教圏、島嶼部イスラム圏、島嶼部キリスト教圏の三つに大別される。そのそれぞれにおいて、制度化と断片化の力学がどう作用し、そこにどのような共通点があるかを明らかにすることで、本研究では近代化とポストモダン状況が同時に稼働する現代東南アジア宗教の新たなモデルの提示を試みる。

本研究の目的は、宗教と観光が同時に進行し接触する過程で現れる「創発空間」の問題と可能性を、葛藤、対話、調停、そして創造の動態に注目しながらフィールドワークを通じて実証的に解明することである。
祝祭と巡礼の具体的事例について、フィリピンという国家コンテクスト内で宗教と観光の2つの領域がどのような状況下で接触しているのか、どのような葛藤が生じ対話や調停が試みられているのか、そしていかなる創造が発現しているのか、明らかにする。さらに、それら創発がローカルな生活世界にいかに浸透し影響を与え、どのような空間が地域に生じているのか、検討する。その上で「宗教と観光の創発空間」についての一般理論化を試みる。

2020年から継続するコロナ禍は、観光客を激減させたのみならず、大きな不安と、観光活動の是非を巡る社会的分断を、社会にもたらした。パンデミックと観光との出会いが引き起こしたこの不安と分断を、文化人類学はいかに受け止めればよいだろうか？ 本研究は、近年の文化人類学が展開してきた不確実性／リスクをめぐる議論と、観光人類学が蓄積してきたホスト／ゲストを巡る実証的考察を融合させることで、観光人類学の新たな理論的展開を導くとともに、観光が生み出す不安と分断の軽減に向けた実践的示唆を得ることを目指す。

2020年から継続するコロナ禍は、観光客を激減させたのみならず、人々に大きな不安をもたらし、観光のホストがゲストを拒絶する、観光旅行をしない者がする者を〈社会の敵〉として非難する、といった社会的分断を生んだ。人々のつながりを引き裂いた不安の源泉となったのは、観光の場で出会う他者が保菌者かも知れない不確実性と、観光によって感染が拡がるリスクである。本研究は、不確実性とリスクを観光を阻害する「問題」として捉えるのではなく、不確実性／リスクと共存共栄する観光の形を模索すると共に、観光が生み出す社会的分断の軽減に向けた実践的示唆を得ることを目指す。
Cultural Anthropological Study of the Management Processes of Religious Organizations

As a result of this research project, we published "Anthropology of Religious Organizations: How Religions Imagine/Create the World" (Hozokan, March 2023). The book focuses on the pivotal role of "religion"--discourses that present norms about what and how we should live and how we should relate to others (including things and money) in imagining/creating our ideal way of life and the world. We then used Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and what we call "Western modernity" as examples to illustrate through ethnographic descriptions what kind of world they imagine/create.
An Empirical Approach to "the Contact Zone between Religion and Politics": Conflict and Mediation over RH Bill of the Philippines

This research aims to study the conflict between the Philippine government and the catholic church, and its influence on people. As a result, it became clear that (a) both catholic moral and political rationality diverge from people’s living logic, and (b) the divergence is deeply rooted in the social norm about life and family in the Philippine society. Thereby, it is necessary to understand the national policy from the perspectives of religion, politics, and people’s living.
Reconfiguration of "the Social" and Emerging Mode of Governing the Risks

This study clarified the current reconfiguration of “the social,” a collectivity and connectedness that supposedly ensures a sense of security in life among people, which emerges in interactions with the contemporary neoliberal governmentality and ensuing precarity experienced by the urban residents in the Philippines. It further discussed that such reconfiguration can be clearly observed in the process of decentralization and liberalization since the early 1990s of the Philippines. Focusing on the ethnographies of precarity which defines the various localities of the Philippines, the study examines various cases which indicate the complicacy of the emergent social which, on one hand, works to expand the solidarity among the poor but, on the other hand, advances the neoliberal logic of resilience, self-reliance, and entrepreneurial citizenry.
Comparative ethnographic study on the management of religious organizations

In 2015, we shared the contents of the research on religious organizations that members had conducted individually, and discussed how to analyze the issue of "management of religious organizations" in a common framework.In2016, based on the discussion of the previous year, We held a symposium inviting an economic anthropologist (Dr. Noriya SUMIHARA) and a religious sociologist (Dr. Tatsuya Shirase). The results were published as "Cultural anthropological research on the management of religious organizations" (the Institute of Anthropology of Nanshan University). In 2017, based on the discussion of the previous year, we held a theme session entitled "The Management of Religious Organizations" at The Japanese Association for the Study of Religion and Society, inviting a religious sociologist (Dr. Akira Nishimura) as a commentator.
