The ratio between far-ultraviolet (FUV) and infrared (IR) luminosity densities from z=0 to z=1 is discussed by using the luminosity functions (LFs) of both wavelengths. The FUV LF (z=0-1) based on GALEX has been reported by (Arnouts et al. (2005, ApJ, 619, L43), whilst for the IR LF, we used the IRAS PSCz 60-μm LF for the local universe and the Spitzer 15-μm LF at higher-z as used by Le Floc'h et al. (2005, ApJ, in press). Both luminosity densities show a significant evolutionary trend, but the IR evolves much faster than the FUV. It is also shown that more than 70 per cent of the star formation activity in the universe is obscured by dust at 0.5 < z < 1.2.

Dust plays various important roles in galaxy formation and evolution. In the early epoch of galaxy evolution, dust is only supplied by supernovae (SNe). With the aid of a new physical model of dust production by SNe developed by Nozawa et al. (N03), we constructed a model of dust emission from forming galaxies. Then we calculated the SED of a local starbursting dwarf galaxy SBS 0335-052. Our present model SED naturally reproduced the strong N-MIR continuum and the lack of cold far-IR emission of SBS 0335-052. We also presented the evolution of the SED of Lyman-break galaxies. Finally, we discussed the possibility of observing forming galaxies at z>~ 5.

Source confusion has been a long-standing problem in the astronomical history. In the previous formulation of the confusion problem, sources are assumed to be distributed homogeneously on the sky. This fundamental assumption is, however, not realistic in many applications. In this work, by making use of the point field theory, we derive general analytic formulae for the confusion problems with arbitrary distribution and correlation functions. As a typical example, we apply these new formulae to the source confusion of infrared galaxies. The effect of source correlation on the realistic infrared galaxy counts is relatively small (15 per cent), it is strong enough to hamper a precise estimation of galaxy evolution.

We have studied the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) as part of the ongoing MWA project in Australia, obtaining upper limits on the EoR neutral hydrogen 21cm signal from analysis of the auto-correlation power spectra of the MWA radio maps and cross-correlation spectra with the cosmic microwave background maps. Numerical calculations with a detailed treatment of radiation transfer are used to investigate the relationship between the initial mass function of the first stars and the 21cm line signal and show that the global signal of the 21cm line can provide information on the nature of the first stars. In addition, a theoretical model of the cross-correlation signal between galaxies and the 21cm line is developed. This method, in combination with data from future galaxy surveys, is shown to be effective in obtaining the EoR 21cm line signal while avoiding foreground radiation.
