It is generally believed that viruses that infect plants do not infect humans or animals. However, academic studies have not solved the issue. A paper was published in the 1960s on the possibility of tobacco mosaic virus inducing lung cancer in smokers. Therefore, in this study, we examined whether pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) can infect cultured mammalian cells and birds. As a result, the virus did not proliferate in cultured cells, either by just adding PMMoV to the cells or by introducing the virus into the cells using electroporation technique. It was found that PMMoV passed through the intestinal tract of chicken without being degraded and were excreted in the feces, inducing the production of IgA in a small amount.

This study aimed to clarify the molecular mechanism of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. The miRNAs upregulated in the culture medium of pancreatic beta cell line were consistent with the miRNA species upregulated in the blood of diabetic mice. This suggests that miRNAs produced in degenerating beta cells should enter blood stream and have an influence on the germ cells. The methylated DNA regions of diabetic mice sperm in the previous report were not consistent with our result using our inbred strain of mice. Then, we revealed the epigenomic profile in glycometabolic genes using our own mice.

In the present study, we aimed to do risk analysis for emerging infectious diseases mediated by flying foxes (megabats). We performed virological studies on flying foxes to detect emerging viruses (and/or viral genomes) from megabats. Also, ecological behaviors of megabats were investigated in the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia. Considering Hendra virus in Australia, the traffic of megabats between Japan and Philippines were studied. The space from Okinawa to Batanes Islands, Philippines, via Taiwan seemed to be semi-enclosed for megabats. In addition, the development of central Mindanao appeared to disturb megabats to fly over Mindanao Island from Japanese side to Papua, and vice versa. Similar to this, megabats in western Java island also seemed to be present in semi-enclosed space made by biological obstacles, that is, cities and/or high mountains.
