    Abstract

    We synthesized a novel triptycene analogue, 3,3′,3″,3″′,3″″,3″″′-((triptycene-2,3,6,7,14,15-hexayl)hexakis(sulfanediyl))hexapropanenitrile (3), which served as a valuable precursor for the triptycene-derived tris-bidentate bridging dithiolene ligand, triptycene-2,3,6,7,14,15-hexakis(thiolate) (4), following the removal of the cyanoethyl moiety protection group. We determined the molecular and crystal structures of compound 3 and confirmed its capacity to yield compound 4. By reacting 3 with [NiCl2(BPY)] and [PtCl2(BPY)] (BPY: 2,2′-bipyridine) in methanol, we obtained crude samples of [Ni3(4)(BPY)3] and [Pt3(4)(BPY)3], respectively.

    A C-4h symmetrically substituted phthalocyanine, 1,8,15,22-tertrakis(2,4-dimethylpent-3-oxy)phthalocyanine (H(2)TdMPPc), was used to synthesize Tb3+-phthalocyanine double-decker complexes ([Tb(TdMPPc)(2)]s). Because H(2)TdMPPc has C-4h symmetry, S,S, R,R, and meso isomers of [Tb(TdMPPc)(2)] were obtained depending on the difference in the direction of the coordination plane of two C-4h-type phthalocyanines with respect to a central Tb3+ ion. We investigated the physical properties of these [Tb(TdMPPc)(2)] isomers, including their single-ion magnetic properties, and found that the spin-reversal energy barrier (U-eff) of the meso isomer was apparently higher than that of the enantiomers. Detailed crystal structural analyses indicated that the meso isomer has a more symmetrical structure than do the enantiomers, thereby suggesting that the higher U-eff of the meso isomer originated from the more highly symmetrical structure.

    This study describes the concise exfoliation of multilayer Ti3C2T x MXene containing residual aluminum atoms. Treatment with tetramethylammonium base in a co-solvent of tetrahydrofuran and H2O produced single-layer Ti3C2T x , which was confirmed via atomic force microscopy observations, with an electrical conductivity 100+ times that of Ti3C2T x prepared under previously reported conditions. The scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the exfoliated single-layer Ti3C2T x MXenes were reconstructed to assembled large-domain layered films, enabling excellent macroscale electric conductivity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the complete removal of residual Al atoms and the replacement of surface fluorine atoms with hydroxy groups. Using the exfoliated dispersion, a flexible transparent conductive film was formed and demonstrated in an electrical application.

    Magnetic bistability has previously been observed and evaluated in an organic thiazyl radical 1,3,5-triathia-2,4,6-triazapentalenyl (TTTA). Herein, the structure-pressure response of TTTA has been evaluated by X-ray diffraction, where a lack of a structural phase transition up to 4.6 GPa certifies that the paramagnetic suppression is caused by a steady decrease in the separation between the moieties containing the radical electron along the π-stacking chains. The intermolecular interactions throughout the crystal lattice have also been calculated using the PIXEL method, and highlight the relative strength of the inter-column interactions in the two known polymorphs of TTTA, which provides extra justification for the cause of the wide magnetic hysteresis and its response to pressure.

    The fluorinated half sandwich complex [CpCoLF] (Cp = cyclopentadiene
    LF = o-perfluoro-phenylenediimine
    2F) shows a T-shaped geometry with the LF ligand coplanar with the metallocycle. The molecules are dimerized in a head-to-tail fashion and arranged in a herringbone manner in the crystal packing. The crystal structure of 2F is different from that of the corresponding hydrocarbon compound (2H). Moreover, the differences due to the presence of fluorine atoms are also highlighted by the analysis of the intermolecular contacts, which show that 2F exhibits several F⋯F contacts, as well as aromatic intra-dimer π … π interactions in addition to C–H … π and C–H⋯F contacts. No relevant π … π interactions are observed in the case of 2H. Hirshfeld Surface (HS) analysis also depicted well the differences in the solid state interactions between the different crystal structures. In particular, HS has been useful in highlighting the differences observed between the crystal structure of 2H obtained from Rietveld refinement and that measured on single crystal (2HP and 2HSCH, respectively). The effect of the fluorination on the electronic structure has been investigated also by CV measurements and Density Functional Theory calculations. Both are consistent with a lowering in energy of the molecular orbitals. Data Mining Force Field calculations clearly indicate that the 2HSCH structure is more stable than the 2HP one. These findings can be explained in terms of the energy of the intermolecular interactions. The enhanced stability of the fluorine substitute can be easily explained by the large number of strong interactions involving fluorine atoms.

    We investigated the structural and electronic/spin configurations of a film of the Co tetrakis(1,2,5-thiadiazole) porphyrazine (CoTTDPz) molecule adsorbed on the Au(111) surface by a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). CoTTDPz has a structure similar to that of the Co phthalocyanine molecule, but the benzene ring of the isoindole of the phthalocyanine molecule is replaced by the pentagon moiety of 1,2,5-thiadiazoles that has an S atom at the apex. We find an ordered molecular lattice with a threefold symmetry where a nearest-neighbor distance of 1.30 nm was measured, which is significantly smaller than that observed for the metal Pc molecule. The unit cell of the lattice contains two molecules that are rotated by 60 degrees relative to each other. With the configuration achieved by this rotation, the neighboring molecules can form a stronger interaction through bonding between the S atom at the apex of one molecule and the N atom of the other (the N atom that is bridging the thiadiazoles). The strong interaction between the molecule and the substrate appears in the spin state examined by the detection of the Kondo resonance, which is formed by the screening of an isolated spin by the conduction electron. Even though the existence of the spin was confirmed for the bulk and thick films of this molecule, no Kondo features are detected for the molecules in the first, second, and third layers of the films. However, the isolated molecule in the third layer showed an intriguing combination of the Kondo feature and an inelastic excitation feature caused by a spin-flip process.

    Magnetic molecules are of interest for application in spintronic and quantum-information processing devices. Therein, control of the interaction between the spins of neighboring molecules is the critical issue. Substitution of outer moieties of the molecule can tune the molecule-molecule interaction. Here we show a novel spin behavior for a magnetic molecule of vanadyl tetrakis (thiadiazole) porphyrazine (abbreviated as VOTTDPz) adsorbed on Au(111), which is modified from vanadyl phthalocyanine (VOPc) by replacing the inert phthalocyanine ligand with a reactive thiadiazole moiety. The magnetic properties of the molecules are examined by observing the Kondo resonance caused by the screening of an isolated spin by conduction electrons using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The Kondo features are detected at the molecule whose shape and intensity show site-dependent variation, revealing complex spin-spin interactions due to the enhanced interaction between molecules, originating from the functionalization of the ligand with a more reactive moiety.Strong spin-spin interactions between surface-deposited magnetic molecules are desirable for quantum computing applications. Here the authors use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate the spin-spin interactions between neighbouring porphyrazine-derivatives on Au(111).

    Supercapacitors have attracted intensive research interest due to their advantages including longer cycling ability and higher power density. Porous heteroatom-doped carbons (PHCs) have been regarded as a class of promising electrode materials for supercapacitors because of their unique porous, electronic and chemical properties. However, synthesis of PHCs with hierarchical mesoporous/microporous structures and ultra-high porosity and electrochemical performance remains a great research challenge. In this research, two oxygen and nitrogen co-doped PHCs (denoted as ONC-T1s) are prepared via a saltassisted pyrolysis method using covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as the precursor. ONC-T1s show a hierarchical porous structure with an ultra-high specific surface area (up to 3451 m(2) g(-1)). The ONC-T1-850-based supercapacitor exhibits a high specific capacitance of 1711 F g(-1) at 1 A g(1), an ultra-fast charge-discharge rate up to 500 A g(-1) with a specific capacitance of 856 F g(-1), and excellent stability. This work establishes a promising strategy for preparation of PHCs using COFs or other porous organic polymers as precursors and demonstrates the great potential of PHC-based supercapacitors.

    Near-infrared sensitization of monolayer MoS2 is here achieved via the covalent attachment of a novel heteroleptic nickel bis-dithiolene complex into sulfur vacancies in the MoS2 structure. Photocurrent action spectroscopy of the sensitized films reveals a discreet contribution from the sensitizer dye centred around 1300 nm (0.95 eV), well below the bandgap of MoS2 (2.1 eV), corresponding to the excitation of the monoanionic dithiolene complex. A mechanism of conductivity enhancement is proposed based on a photo-induced flattening of the corrugated energy landscape present at sulfur vacancy defect sites within the MoS2 due to a dipole change within the dye molecule upon photoexcitation. This method of sensitization might be readily extended to other functional molecules that can impart a change to the dielectric environment at the MoS2 surface under stimulation, thereby extending the breadth of detector applications for MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides.

    A supramolecular honeycomb lattice was successfully formed by using triradical trianion species of triptycene tribenzoquinone (TT) which forms strong intermolecular π-π pancake bonds toward three directions. The crystal structure of Rb3TT·2H2O belongs to the hexagonal P6/m space group, the tight-binding band calculation of which reveals Dirac cones and flat bands.

    A spontaneous entrapment of electron-donating small guest molecules, including tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-1,3-propanediamine (TMPDA), was realized in a structurally flexible metal-organic framework, {Mn7(2,7-AQDC)6(2,6-AQDC)(DMA)6}∞ (AQDC = anthraquinone dicarboxylates, DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide), with electron-accepting anthraquinone groups, generating two MOF guest charge transfer complexes: {Mn7(2,7-AQDC)6(2,6-AQDC)(DMA)6(TTF)5} and {Mn7(2,7-AQDC)6(2,6-AQDC)(DMA)4(H2O)2(TMPDA)7}. Using a mild impregnation procedure, single crystals of the target complexes were obtained via a crystal-to-crystal conversion, and the crystals were suitable for structural analysis. Single crystal X-ray analysis demonstrated the different arrangements of these intercalated donor molecules: some donor molecules interacted with the anthraquinone groups and formed infinite D-A-A-D stacks, some appeared beside the anthraquinone groups but only formed donor-acceptor pairs, and the remainder of the molecules simply filled the space. The charge transfer between the guests and the framework was spectroscopically confirmed, and the radical densities on the organic species were estimated using magnetic susceptibility measurements. Compared with a solid-state mixture of anthraquinone and donor molecules, the evenly distributed donor molecules in the micropores of the MOF resulted in a "solid solution" state and significantly promoted the degree of charge transfer between donors and acceptors. Such an encapsulation process may be adopted as a new strategy for post-modification of the electronic and magnetic properties of MOFs, as well as for generating new semiconducting charge-transfer complexes.

    The thin film properties of tin(ii) 2,3-naphthalocyanine (SnNPc) were interrogated and various strategies for controlling the crystallinity and crystalline orientation within the films were assessed. SnNPc is shown to crystallize in the space group P21/c (Z = 4), where the molecular arrangement consists of alternating layers of concave and convex overlap, induced by the out-of-plane Sn atoms, resulting in a 3D slipped-π-stack network structure analogous to that reported for Phase I of titanyl phthalocyanine. The thin films were studied by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and absorption spectroscopy and are highly sensitive not just to the conditions during growth, but also to substrate pre- and post-deposition treatment. While the films grown at room temperature were largely amorphous, the crystallinity was enhanced with substrate temperature, with the molecules orienting in a standing molecular geometry. A thin layer of 3,4:9,10-perlenetetracarboxylic dianhydride induces a lying molecular geometry of the same polymorph as that of the single crystal, while different polymorphs are accessible through solvent vapor annealing of amorphous films. Transient photocurrent measurements showed a dramatic improvement in photodetector device bandwidth for the lying molecular geometry, which was attributed to enhanced photoconductivity along the π-stacking axis, while solvent vapor annealing could be used to tune the photosensitivity across the near-infrared region.

    The magnetic, structural, conductivity and magnetoresistance properties of [Ni(quinoline-8-selenoate)2] ([Ni(qs)2]) have been studied. Despite the insolubility of the material necessitating its study as a powdered sample, a remarkably high conductivity has been measured. The conductivity is an order of magnitude greater than the thin-film processable thiol analogue previously reported and has been interpreted through the same space-charge limited conduction mechanism with charges injected from the electrodes. The introduction of selenium, results in a material with conductivity approaching metallic due to the enhanced interaction between adjacent molecules. Additionally, under an applied magnetic field, the material displays a negative magnetoresistance effect above 35% at 2 K. The effect can still be observed at 200 K and is interpreted in terms of a double-exchange mechanism.

    In this chapter, we describe the solid-state electrochemical doping to nano-porous molecular crystals to control the conductive/magnetic properties, and the electrochemical crystal growth of unique 3D molecular crystals. (i) Electrochemical doping to the single crystals of lithium phthalocyanine (LiPc) in the x-form induces a crystal-to-crystal transformation to LiPc.Clx(0 &lt
    x &lt
    0.5), in which the x value is controlled by the electrochemical potential of the working electrode. X-ray crystal analyses for LiPc.Clx clearly demonstrates the presence of the Cl- ions in the 1D channels, and the shrinkage of the interplanar distance between the neighboring LiPc molecules. (ii) In-situ magnetic measurements for a mixed-valent Cr(II)-Cr(III) Prussian blue analog (PBA) in a solid-state electrochemical reduction, reveals a continuous change in magnetism, which can be well understood by a stepwise reduction of the Cr(III) ions in the A and B sites, respectively. (iii) The chiral 3D periodic structure in I4132 space group that is called K4 crystal or a number of different name, is successfully formed by the electrochemical crystallization of the radical anion salts of NDI(naphthalene diimide). This K4 crystal of NDI-? is found to correspond to the hyper-Kagome lattice of Mott dimers with spin frustration.

    By introducing catalyst- and solvent-free graft polymerization of low cost and environmentally benign sulfur to the nano-channels of an imine-linked covalent organic framework (COF), we demonstrated our strategy for functionalization of a conventional COF to yield a redox-active covalent organic framework-graft-polysulfide (COF-graft-PS), which can be utilized as a cathode active material in rechargeable lithium organic batteries. The COF-graft-PS-based batteries showed high capacity (425 mA h g(-1) at a rate of 250 mA g(-1)), excellent rate capability, and good cycling performance over 500 cycles. The design characteristics and synthetic strategy open new possibilities for the preparation of alternative, sustainable, high-performance rechargeable lithium batteries by using abundant and cost-effective materials.

    We report the first 3D spin liquid state of isotropic organic spins. Structural analysis, and magnetic and heat-capacity measurements were carried out for a chiral organic radical salt, (TBA)(1.5) [(-)-NDI-Delta] (TBA denotes tetrabutylammonium and NDI denotes naphthalene diimide), in which (-)-NDI-Delta forms a K-4 structure due to its triangular molecular structure and an intermolecular pi-pi overlap between the NDI moieties. This lattice was identical to the hyperkagome lattice of S = 1/2 Mott dimers, and should exhibit 3D spin frustration. In fact, even though the high-temperature magnetic susceptibility followed the Curie-Weiss law with a negative Weiss constant of theta = -15 K, the low-temperature magnetic measurements revealed no long-range magnetic ordering down to 70 mK, and suggested the presence of a spin liquid state with a large residual paramagnetism chi(0) of 8.5 x 10(-6) emu g(-1) at the absolute zero temperature. This was supported by the N-14 NMR measurements down to 0.38 K. Further, the low-temperature heat capacities c(p) down to 68 mK clearly indicated the presence of c(p) for the spin liquid state, which can be fitted to the power law of T-0.62 in the wide temperature range 0.07-4.5 K.

    Negative differential resistance (NDR) was observed in the most well known organic conductor, TTF-TCNQ, in its low-temperature Peierls insulator phase below 53 K. The voltage-current (V -I) characteristics below this temperature, measured by a four-probe method, exhibited unique NDR behavior, in which the dV/dI versus conductivity (sigma) plots had the inflection points at the three sigma values without depending on temperature. These sigma values were found to coincide with the conductivities at the three transition temperatures (53, 49, and 38 K) for the formation of the charge-density waves in TTF-TCNQ. This suggests that the electronic structure of the Peierls insulating phase of TTF-TCNQ is governed by the total carrier density, which is determined by not only thermal excitation but also carrier injection.

    The structure and electronic properties of a novel cobalt half sandwich complex of cyclopentadiene (Cp) and diaminonaphthalene (DAnap) [CpCo(DAnap)] are described and compared to the previously reported diaminobenzene derivative [CpCo(DAbnz)] in view of their potential for (opto) electronic device application. Both complexes show stable redox processes, tunable through the diaminoacene ligand, and show strong absorption in the visible region, with additional transitions stretching into the near infrared (NIR). CpCo(DAnap) crystallises with a particularly large unit cell (9301 angstrom 3), comprising 32 molecules, with a gradual rotation over 8 molecules along the long c-axis. In the solid state the balance of the optical transitions in both complexes is reversed, with a suppression of the visible band and an enhancement of the NIR band, attributed to extensive intermolecular electronic interaction. In the case of CpCo(DAnap), highly crystalline thin films could be formed under physical vapor deposition, which show a photocurrent response stretching into the NIR, and p-type semiconductor behavior in field effect transistors with mobility values of the order 1 x 10-(4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1). The device performance is understood through investigation of the morphology of the grown films.

    A novel complex [Pt(C6F4(NH)2)2] (2), formed by a Pt(ii) cation bound to two molecules of the tetrafluorinated 1,2-phenylenediimine ligand, has been synthesized and characterized by electrochemical and XRD measurements, UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy as well as by DFT and TD-DFT calculations. The effect induced by the fluorine atoms has been highlighted by comparison with the corresponding Ni (1H) and Pt (2H) hydrogenated complexes. The cyclic voltammetry data show that the reduction and the oxidation processes of 2 are easier and more difficult (by about 0.5 V), respectively, compared to those of 1H and 2H, suggesting that the electron withdrawing ability of the fluorine atoms lowers the energy level of both the HOMO and the LUMO. UV-vis-NIR measurements are similar for all the three complexes, indicating similar HOMO-LUMO gaps and that the effects of fluorination on the frontier orbitals are roughly the same. Moreover, polymorphism in the powder form of 2 has been highlighted by XRD measurements while the film presents only one phase. Furthermore, this complex shows a field-effect for n-type carriers. All the experimental results are also supported by the calculations, which show the role played by the fluorine atoms in the electronic structure of 2.

    これまでの研究により、C3対称性をもつ分子がハニカム格子に結晶化すれば、必然的にDirac coneやフラットバンドが形成されることを見出している。この物質設計指針に従い、トリプチセン骨格に、ドナーやアクセプター性、あるいは金属イオンへの配位能をもつさまざまな置換基を導入し、分子間の電荷移動相互作用や配位結合によって強固な分子性ハニカム格子を合成する。その次のステップとして、固体電気化学などの手法を用いて、分子性ハニカム格子に関するバンドフィリング制御に挑戦する。すなわち、当該物質を電極上に配して電解質に浸し、電極電位の制御によって系のフェルミエネルギーを連続的に制御する。
    我々はこれまの研究により、C3対称性をもつ分子がハニカム格子に結晶化すれば、必然的にDirac coneやフラットバンドが形成されることを見出している。本研究ではこの物質設計指針に従い、C3対称性をもつ分子骨格としてトリプチセンを選び、ドナーやアクセプター性、あるいは金属イオンへの配位能をもつさまざまな置換基を導入しながら、分子性ハニカム格子の合成すを目指した。
    本年度は、ハニカム格子の類縁格子であるカゴメ格子を有するMOFを合成した。カゴメ格子には、スピンフラストレーションが期待される。得られた系について、極低温域までの磁気測定と熱測定を行った。この結果、多次元的な相互作用をもつにもかかわらず、磁気的秩序状態に転移することなく、低温ではスピン液体状態にあることが結論された。これは、スピンフラストレーションが長距離の磁気的秩序を阻害したためと考えられる。極低温域における磁気測定と熱測定から、スピン液体状態の磁化率と比熱の温度依存性を実験的に決定することができた。さらに、これを説明するためのモデルについても検討した。
    さらに本年度は、いくつかの新規トリプチセン誘導体の合成に成功している。ドナー性とアクセプター性を系について、それぞれその合成に成功した。現在、再結晶法や昇華法によって結晶作製を進めており、いくつかの系では、結晶構造解析や物性測定に取り掛かっている。また現在、電解結晶化によってラジカル塩の作製も行っている。

    We have synthesized molecular nanoporous materials with unique topologies such as honeycomb and gyroid, and explored their physical properties, aiming interdisciplinary research between molecular science and solid-state electrochemistry. We realized excellent electric power storages, by using these materials as cathode active materials for rechargeable batteries, and by inserting redox-active materials and/or organic conductive polymers into their cavity spaces. Furthermore, we fabricated organic devices which contained a solid-liquid interfacial electric double layer and achieved excellent transistor characteristics and high efficiency photoelectric conversion. We also developed various operando measurements in solid-state electrochemistry and proposed a potential junction model that continuously links the work function of the metal to the chemical potential of the electrolyte.

    Recently, graph theory proposed the strong isotropic property, which was realized only on the following three lattices, diamond, K4 and honeycomb. In the present project, we tried to synthesize molecule-based K4 and honeycomb lattices with polyhedral pi-conjugated molecules. It was found that [TBA]3[(-)-NDI-Δ]2 crystallized into a K4 lattice, in which unpaired electrons formed a hyperkagome lattice. Low-temperature physical measurements revealed a spin-liquid ground state in it. We also found a molecule-based honeycomb lattice in Rb3[p-TT] with an exotic band structure, which was similar to that of graphene.
