This paper reports the results of excavation at Mugharat al-Kahf (WTN01) in Wādī Tanūf, North-central Oman. It also provides information on the nonmortuary and nonsedentary activities in central Oman during the Wādī Sūq period (2000–1600 BCE), as the subsistence and social arrangements of this period are the subject of much debate. Previous surveys had discovered a substantial amount of Wādī Sūq pottery at the site. This project took forward the excavation for further exploration. The excavation at Test Pit 1 identified Layers Ia and Ib, wherein pottery sherds, charred date stones and other samples for radiocarbon dating were discovered. These prove the cave's occupation during the early third millennium BCE, early second millennium BCE and the Islamic period. The analysis of artefacts and floral remains provided insights into the sojourn, storage and consumption of dates in the cave, and the mobile lifestyle in central Oman.

Sediments of river deltas provide valuable records of past coastal environments. Optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating has become an alternative to radiocarbon dating for constraining the sediment chronology in large deltas that allow for sufficient sunlight bleaching of sediments during the fluvial transport. However, its applicability to smaller deltas with mountainous riverine systems has not been confirmed yet. To check this, we examine multiple signals from two Holocene sediment cores in the wave-dominated Thu Bon River delta in central Vietnam. Two cores were collected, respectively, 3.9 km and 1.2 km inland from the present shoreline and both show a >-25-m thick succession of coarsening-upward mud to sand deposits. Coarse grains (180–250 μm in diameter) of quartz and K-feldspar, and fine grains (4–11 μm in diameter) of quartz and polymineral were extracted from the upper and lower parts of the cores for multi-grain measurements of quartz OSL, and of feldspar infrared-stimulated luminescence (IRSL) at 50 °C (IR50) and post-IR IRSL at 175 °C (pIRIR175) to determine burial ages. In addition, facies analysis and radiocarbon dating were conducted. The landward core consists of transgressive to early regressive estuarine and prodelta facies, which is overlain by a sandy beach-shoreface facies. The seaward core consists of a relatively simple shallowing-upward succession from muddy prodelta facies to sandy beach-shoreface facies. All luminescence ages except for pIRIR175 of fine grains are mostly consistent with the radiocarbon ages. Instead, pIRIR175 ages of fine grains are significantly overestimated with variable offsets. OSL and IR50 of fine grains provide reasonable age estimates, as these grains were likely well bleached during the transport even along a short and steep mountainous river. Consistent age estimates of all signals from sand indicate that sand was well-bleached in the beach and shoreface owing to the frequent sediment reworking by waves and currents. These results support the hypothesis that luminescence dating is applicable to Holocene wave-dominated deltas and reiterate that comparing different luminescence signals is an effective way to check reliability of the age estimates in environments where the sunlight bleaching is not ensured.

Leads, lags, or synchronies in climatic events among different regions are key to understanding mechanisms of climate change, as they provide insights into the causal linkages among components of the climate system. The well-studied transition from the Lateglacial to early Holocene (ca. 16–10 ka) contains several abrupt climatic shifts, making this period ideal for assessing the spatio-temporal structure of climate change. However, comparisons of timings of past climatic events among regions often remain hypothetical because site-specific age scales are not necessarily synchronised to each other. Here we present new pollen data (n = 510) and mean annual temperature reconstruction from the annually laminated sediments of Lake Suigetsu, Japan. Suigetsu's 14C dataset is an integral component of the IntCal20 radiocarbon calibration model, in which the absolute age scale is established to the highest standard. Its exceptionally high-precision chronology, along with recent advances in cosmogenic isotope studies of ice cores, enables temporally coherent comparisons among Suigetsu, Greenland, and other key proxy records across regions. We show that the onsets of the Lateglacial cold reversal (equivalent to GS-1/Younger Dryas) and the Holocene were synchronous between East Asia and the North Atlantic, whereas the Lateglacial interstadial (equivalent to GI-1/Bølling-Allerød) started ca. two centuries earlier in East Asia than in the North Atlantic. Bimodal migration (or ‘jump’) of the westerly jet between north and south of the Tibetan plateau and Himalayas may have operated as a threshold system responsible for the abruptness of the change in East and South (and possibly also West) Asia. That threshold in Asia and another major threshold in the North Atlantic, associated with switching on/off of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), were crossed at different times, producing a multi-centennial asynchrony of abrupt changes, as well as a disparity of climatic modes among regions during the transitional phases. Such disparity may have disturbed zonal circulation and generated unstable climate during transitions. The intervening periods with stable climate, on the other hand, coincided with the beginnings of sedentary life and agriculture, implying that these new lifestyles and technologies were not rational unless climate was stable and thus, to a certain extent, predictable.

Particle sorting is a fundamental method in various fields of medical and biological research. However, existing sorting applications are not capable for high-Throughput sorting of large-size (100 micrometers) particles. Here, we present a novel on-chip sorting method using traveling vortices generated by on-demand microjet flows, which locally exceed laminar flow condition, allowing for high-Throughput sorting (5 kilohertz) with a record-wide sorting area of 520 micrometers. Using an activation system based on fluorescence detection, the method successfully sorted 160-micrometer microbeads and purified fossil pollen (maximum dimension around 170 micrometers) from lake sediments. Radiocarbon dates of sorting-derived fossil pollen concentrates proved accurate, demonstrating the method's ability to enhance building chronologies for paleoenvironmental records from sedimentary archives. The method is capable to cover urgent needs for high-Throughput large-particle sorting in genomics, metabolomics, and regenerative medicine and opens up new opportunities for the use of pollen and other microfossils in geochronology, paleoecology, and paleoclimatology.

The Dead Sea Deep Drilling Project drilled 456 meters into the deepest floor of the Dead Sea and recovered a record of the past ∼220 kyr of the Levant hydroclimate history, that is, Marine Isotope Stages 1–7, including the last three interglacials and the last two glacials. We present an updated chronology of the core from DSDDP Hole 5017-1-A, from the Dead Sea's deepest basin, that refines our previous chronology (Torfstein et al. 2015) based on new information. The updated chronology uses the following approaches: (1) radiocarbon ages of Kitagawa et al. (2017); (2) correlation of specific layers in the core with U–Th-dated sediments on the Dead Sea margin, particularly during the interval of glacial Lake Lisan (MIS 2,3,4); (3) tuning of the δ18O data of DSDDP core aragonite to the U–Th dated oxygen isotopes of regional cave speleothems; and (4) tuning of the DSDDP aragonite δ18O data to summer insolation curves when the cave δ18O chronology is less clear. The updated chronology reveals a strong relationship between the sedimentary facies comprising the core and Northern Hemisphere summer insolation variations. It shows that sequences of sediments marking drier/wetter/drier climate conditions in the lake's watershed (e.g., salt/muds/salt, respectively) appear across the flank/peak/flank segments of several summer insolation peaks. In particular, the transition from drier to wetter sedimentary facies during mid-latitude insolation peaks coincides with the intervals of sapropel conditions in the Mediterranean, reflecting enhanced Nile flow due to intense African monsoonal conditions, and marking the impact of the tropical precession cycles on Eastern Mediterranean hydroclimate. This pattern was lost during MIS 2,3,4, when mostly sequences of primary aragonite are punctuated by gypsum precipitation during Heinrich events, marking the strong impact of the North Atlantic on the last glacial Levant hydroclimate.

Rationale: Pre-screening of bone collagen quality is important to reduce the cost for analyses such as radiocarbon (14C) dating with accelerator mass spectrometry in archaeological studies. We developed a pre-screening protocol based on attenuated total reflection (ATR) Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for assessing the chemical composition and mineralogy of ancient bone samples. Methods: ATR-FTIR measurements were performed on bulk bones of diverse origin and age before collagen extraction. The percentage nitrogen of bulk bones, as well as the weight percentage, and the percentage carbon and nitrogen of extracted organic matter were noted. Several machine learning algorithms were applied to the spectral data and compared for their efficacy in screening for well preserved collagen. Results: The results showed that (a) the first derivative of the spectral data was better suited to screening than the raw FTIR data, especially for a wider spectral range and (b) certain classification algorithms [e.g. gradient boosting machine (GBM)] were able to efficiently predict the degree of preservation in bone samples. Conclusions: This pre-screening protocol can serve as a fast, concise and inexpensive pre-screening tool for determining relative degrees of preservation before collagen extraction and subsequent 14C dating. The screening power based on the machine learning techniques can be further improved by accumulating the FTIR spectral data of bones.

This study establishes the chronological framework of the sedimentary sequence deposited Dead Sea, ICDP 5017-1, Radiocarbon chronology during the past 50 ka at the deepest part of the Dead Sea (the ICDP 5017-1 site), which was recovered by the Dead Sea Deep Drilling Project (DSDDP) under the auspices of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). The age-depth model is constructed using 3814C dates of terrestrial plant remains in a composite 150-m-long profile, generated by anchoring 32 marker layers identified in five cores. The sedimentary records at the ICDP 5017-1 site fills gaps in those obtained from the exposed sections at the high margins of the lake, particularly in times of lake-level retreat, and allows for a high-resolution comparison between the lake’s margins and deepest floor.

The transport and deposition of terrestrially derived organic matter (TOM) into lake and ocean is a key
but poorly constrained aspect of the modern global carbon cycle. An attempt has been done for estimating
a transport time of TOM from the drainage basin of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. We have
determined the 14C contents of the lignin-enriched fraction of the core sediment from the central part
of Lake Biwa. The age of lignin-enriched fraction at the deposition time was estimated to be 7.5 103
years for the last glacial interval. Even in Lake Biwa with more than 100 rivers from the relatively small
drainage basin (3850 km2), TOM was transported at very long time (>103 years).

To improve age models for lake sediment cores without suitable 14C dating materials such as terrestrial plant fossils, we investigated the radiocarbon dating of lake sediment cellulose. The cellulose fraction in the sediments was obtained by a sequential decomposition of other organic matter, and subsequently dated by AMS. In general, 14C ages of the lake sediment cellulose obtained from a 10-m sediment core from Lake Erhai on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau are in agreement with 14C dates from terrestrial plant fossils. For the early Holocene, however, differences of up to 1000 14C years are observed between lake sediment cellulose and terrestrial plant fossils. This disagreement is probably caused by the contribution of 14C-depleted cellulose synthesized by aquatic plants/algae in the lake. To obtain a precise

A new separation method of magnesium in the different chlorophyll forms, including chlorophyll a, b, c1 + c2 and c3, of phytoplankton, was developed for isotope measurements. Our method is based on a two-step separation using HPLC and a C18 column. The method made it possible to determine the magnesium isotopes (d25Mg and d26Mg) of the particular chlorophyll forms in marine living phytoplankton with a high precision using a multi-collector ICP-MS. The differences of d26Mg values among commercial chlorophylls (four types of chlorophyll a and two types of chlorophyll b) and the different chlorophyll forms of marine diatom-rich phytoplankton collected from the Northwest Pacific show variations of 1.5% and 0.65%, respectively. We found a slight enrichment in the heavier magnesium isotopes in chlorophylls relative to sea-water: 0.58%, 0.74%, 0.27% and 0.35% on d26Mg for chlorophyll a, b, c1 + c2 and c3, respectively. Our data suggest a mass dependent fractionation of magnesium isotopes among species of photosynthetic organisms and the chlorophyll forms. The magnesium isotope analysis by chlorophyll forms might not only give a new insight into the biosynthetic pathways associated with chlorophylls but also be a potential environmental indicator preserved in marine phytoplankton and other photosynthetic organisms.

The deglacial meltwater pulse in the North Atlantic that induced the Younger Dryas event also prompted climate cooling in East Asian monsoon regions such as Japan and coastal mid latitude China. However, very little is understood about the mechanism that can transmit changes in the North Atlantic to the Far East. Here we show that the shutdown of the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation brought about significantly lower temperatures and higher precipitation in the Japanese winter, whereas the change in the Japanese summer climate was considerably smaller. The cooling of the Siberian air mass seems to have caused an increased pressure gradient between Siberia and the West Pacific in winter, intensifying the winter monsoon. The Mongolian high pressure system and the westerly jet stream played an important role in the teleconnection. In contrast, the warming at the onset of the late glacial interstadial (GI-1; Bølling-Allerød) in the West Pacific did not have season-specific features, implying that the principal driving mechanism of this warming event may lie in a panhemispheric or global factor, such as insolation changes.

Air sample collections over the western Pacific have continued since 1992 as a part of Center for Global Environmental Research, National Institute for Environmental Studies (CGER-NIES) global environmental monitoring program. The air samples collected on the Japan-Australia transect made it possible to trace the seasonal and secular 14CO2 variations, as well as an increasing trend of greenhouse gases over the western Pacific. A subset of CO2 samples from latitudes of 10–15°N and 23–28°S were chosen for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C analysis using a NIES-TERRA AMS with a 0.3–0.4% precision. These 14CO2 records in maritime air show seasonal variations superimposed on normal exponential decreasing trends with a time constant of about 16 yr. The Δ14C values in the Northern Hemisphere are lower those in the Southern Hemisphere by 3–4‰ during 1994–2002. The Northern Hemisphere record shows relatively high seasonality (2.3 ± 1.5‰) as compared with the Southern Hemisphere (1.3 ± 1.2‰). The maximum values of seasonal cycles appear in late autumn and early winter in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, respectively. Oscillations of 1–10 yr over the western Pacific are found to correlate possibly with the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events.

The research titled “Changing climate and resident-environment in the migrations and expansions of Homo Sapiens across the Continent of Asia” in a frame of a program “Cultural History of PaleoAsia” involves collaboration between Japanese and local researchers specializing in paleoclimatology, archaeology, and other related fields. The project has conducted field surveys in various locations across Asia (Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Jammu and Kashmir, Iran, Israel, Oman) and performed geochemical, paleontological, and dating on samples brought back to Japan. Additionally, models were created, and simulations were conducted to integrate and interpret the collected data, allowing for the reconstruction of the environmental and climatic conditions during the expansion of modern humans (Homo sapiens) across the Eurasian continent.

A possible method for extend the radiocarbon dating range (50ka) is to enrich radiocarbon isotopically in sample. In this study, new system of the isotope enrichment by means of pressure swing adsorption was designed and examined for radiocarbon enrichment. During two-year research, we succeeded to enrich radiocarbon in CO gas form. It has been confirmed that this approach is a potential method for extension of radiocarbon dating range, but we still need more research for the practical application of this method.
