    Exhibitions known as Film Weeks (dianyingzhou) were systematically launched nationwide in the Peoples Republic of China by the state to showcase imported films during the Seventeen Years (1949-1966), which was a crucial period for the establishment of the socialist regime. This study identifies film weeks as a specific type of film festival, situates their analysis within the sociopolitical context of the Seventeen Years, and explores them as a dynamic process in which actors such as the Chinese film industry, film professionals, and audiences negotiated with the authority of the party-state, and a centralized cultural system. Central to the Chinese states encompassing cultural exchange programs with nations both within and outside the socialist bloc, the practice of film weeks highlighted Chinas changing stance in cold war power politics. Meanwhile, film weeks promoted the practices of socialist cinéphilia in engaging Chinese audiences with foreign film cultures. Using case studies of the Soviet Film Week in the 1950s and the 1957 Asian Film Week, this article historicizes film weeks connections with an increasingly globalizing film festival network while also examining how the vernacular practices of Chinese festivals can contribute to rethinking film festival studies Eurocentric discursive framework.

    Intersecting both fields of film festival studies and transnational cinema studies, this article examines how Asian documentary film festivals help to configure and orchestrate regional documentary/film connections. In particular, this work examines Asia's earliest documentary film festival, the biennial Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (YIDFF), established in 1989 in Japan, and one of its visionary founders, documentarist Ogawa Shinsuke. This project first traces how YIDFF articulated Ogawa's ideal of establishing a creative alliance of young generations Asian filmmakers toward the region's post-Cold War transition. Subsequently, the YIDFF, intertwined with the changing political economy of global and regional film festivals since the 1990s, has taken up Ogawa's legacy and renewed efforts to generate an Inter-Asian film network. This article leverages Anna Tsing's conceptualization of global connections to distinguish the YIDFF's region-making project and rethink the discursive framing of international film festival network. Additionally, it grasps the political significance of the YIDFF's region-making by explaining how, as an idiosyncratic festival model, it has disturbed and reframed the given configuration of global image consumption and circulation, and has been retained and reinvented through intra-festival connections across Asia.

    Looking at Soyoung Kim’s Exile Trilogy (2014–2017), three documentaries centering on ethnic Koreans in Central Asia (formerly USSR) and specifically the use of archival footages and soundtracks in Sound of Nomad, Arirang (2016), this article considers Kim’s works an organic contribution to the image archive of/about/by the global Korean diaspora while seeking to interrogate the politics of “retro” by turning to what Catherine Russell has approached as “archiveology.” Foregrounding the representation of the transgenerational divas from the “Arirang Ensemble” of the Koryo Theater in Almaty, Kazakhstan, this piece highlights how the divas’ personal stories reconstructed via images, oral accounts, sound recordings, and so forth need to be grasped as an assemblage of affective flows that has complicated the teleological narrative about the Korean diaspora and problematized the Soviet state’s ideocultural representations of the Koryo people.

    本研究は、日本におけるデジタル映像アーカイブの新しい在り方の提言を目的とする。書籍・公文書・文化財のデジタルアーカイブ構築が謳われ始め久しくなるが、映像アーカイブのデジタル化は進んでいない。本研究では「産・官・学」からの参加者により、日本のデジタル映像アーカイブの未来がどうあるべきかを提言する。[1] 東京一極集中型のトップダウン型政治力によって決定するのではなく、[2] 一般ユーザーたちにとって使いやすい、[3] 点在する地方映像アーカイブの連携を可能にし、[4] 東アジア諸国を中心に海外の映像アーカイブと協賛を促す「ボトムアップのデジタル映像アーカイブとはどうあるべきか？」を探る。

    私はアジアの映画祭を「プロジェクティブ」映画祭として扱いたい。三つの視点から言えば。まず、この理念によって、私達はどのようにこの映画祭を関連アレンジメントの一部として、映画祭の組織委員会の手配を通じて、都市環境と国家/地域をつなぐ文化産業に発展できるか。次に、この理念は空間と時間の面から、映画祭が決して世界と孤立していない「ネット」であるという私達の考えを強化した。ネットに基づいた投影映画祭は計画などの戦略によって内容や構造に新たな視野と傾向を生み出せる。第三は、プロジェクトを中心とした論理は項目市場と項目創造投資会に現れている。

    This is the second part for our study of film history in Asia, which zooms in onto the post-World War II periods. Envisioned as the continuation of our study of Asian film history prior to 1945, this course attempts to position the survey of films within the socio-historical exigencies and cultural context of East Asia and Southeast Asia since 1945 and aims to facilitate the understanding of the film aesthetics and traditions of Asian cinemas in relation to the sociopolitical history and discourses of modernities in this region. Students are expected to acquire the basic knowledge on film cultures in Asia, and learn to interpret and analyze films by engaging with contemporary socio-cultural issues that became significant during the timeframe under examination.

    Intersecting research fields of transnational cinema studies, Asian studies, postcolonialism and the studies of globalization, this postgraduate-level seminar interrogates crucial issues in identity politics so that to rethink Asian cinema and Asian cinema studies. Leveraging a unique body of case studies from world cinema and specifically visual works and films from East Asia and Southeast Asia, this seminar explores pivotal theoretical frameworks/concepts such as sinophone cinema, Zainichi cinema, cosmopolitan cinema, diasporic filmmaking and global queer and examines discourses related to Chinese-ness, Japanese-ness, diaspora, globalism, cosmopolitanism and so forth. Through this seminar, we hope our students would benefit from the discussions and debates and grasp a set of theoretical, analytic perspectives in not only approaching and analyzing contemporary Asian cinema and its cultural politics, but also in perceiving Asia and Asian societies in their dynamic yet contingent connection with globalization.

    TITLE: Weaving the Nation with the World: The PRC’s External Film Geographies in the 1950s and 1960s

    ABSTRACT: This study approaches the 1950s and 1960s PRC transnational film distribution from the perspective of film geographies and investigates how the PRC created and maintained a film cosmos by linking the nation with the world. It locates the film cosmos within the frame of ongoing mediation between the state’s shifting self-positioning, the domestic cultural regime building, and the international Cold War wrestling. This paper argues that these PRC film geographies reflected but not equated with the regional geopolitics and the Cold War order. The spectrum of the film titles and the distribution of film geographies constitute eddies within a broader geopolitical Cold War imaginary and socialist Mao cultural imaginary in current scholarship.
