    Ensuring the structural integrity of reinforced concrete (RC) components in nuclear facilities exposed to extreme conditions is essential for safe decommissioning. This study investigates the impact of high-temperature exposure on RC pedestal structures supported by steel ring-shaped shear connectors—critical elements for maintaining vertical and lateral load paths in containment systems. Scaled-down cyclic loading tests were performed on pedestal specimens with and without prior thermal exposure, simulating post-accident conditions observed at a damaged nuclear power plant. Experimental results show that thermal degradation significantly reduces lateral stiffness, with failure mechanisms concentrating at the interface between the concrete and the embedded steel skirt. Complementary finite element analyses, incorporating temperature-dependent material degradation, highlight the crucial role of load redistribution to steel components when concrete strength is compromised. Parametric studies reveal that while geometric variations in the inner skirt have limited influence, thermal history is the dominant factor affecting vertical capacity. Notably, even with substantial section loss in the concrete, the steel inner skirt maintained considerable load-bearing capacity. This study establishes a validated analytical framework for assessing structural performance under extreme conditions, offering critical insights for risk evaluation and retrofit strategies in the context of nuclear facility decommissioning.

    ABSTRACT

    In general, a steel beam is connected to a concrete slab using shear connectors, forming a composite beam. This composite action shifts the neutral axis under bending, resulting in a buckling behavior that differs from that of a bare steel beam. Moreover, the structural performance of composite beams is significantly influenced by the stress transfer mechanism facilitated by the shear connectors. However, the impact of shear connector and slab properties on buckling behavior has not been fully explored. To address this gap, this research first proposes a simplified method. For modeling composite beams that accurately reflects the behavior of shear connectors. Additionally, a comprehensive parametric study is conducted using an experimentally validated finite element analysis (FEA) model, exploring the influence of various shear connectors and slab properties. Based on the analytical results, a modified evaluation index and equation are ultimately proposed to enhance the assessment of composite beam performance.

    ABSTRACT

    The construction of building foundations requires substantial time and effort, particularly in fabricating reinforced concrete footings and foundation beams. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel structural system that utilizes steel structures for the foundation beams and reinforces pile heads with double steel tubes. Loading tests were conducted to assess the influence of various factors. The applicability of existing evaluation equations is examined to highlight the need for a new prediction formula. As a result, this paper proposes an evaluation equation for the ultimate bearing capacity and a constitutive law to predict the behavior under compression forces.

    A mid-story pin system to avoid moment-resisting frame column failure during seismic action was proposed recently. The solution consists of a reinforced concrete (RC) pier protruding from the foundations, the steel column connected with the superstructure, and plates and the anchor bolt working as a pinned connection in between. This paper utilizes shell finite element analysis (FEA) models to examine the demanded column-to-beam strength ratio to keep the column elastic and maximize the story drift at the moment of beam buckling of the frame. The method of calculating post-seismic residual strength based on maximal buckling deformation of the beam is also proposed.

    The increasing demand in structural engineering now extends beyond collapse prevention to encompass business continuity planning (BCP). In response, energy dissipation devices have garnered significant attention for building response control. Among these, buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) are particularly favored due to their stable hysteretic behavior and well-established design provisions. However, BCP also necessitates the prevention of furniture overturning—an area that remains quantitatively underexplored in the context of buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs). Addressing this gap, this research designs BRBFs using various design criteria and performs incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) with artificially generated seismic waves. The results are compared with previously developed fragility curves for furniture overturning under different BRB design conditions. The findings demonstrate that the fragility of furniture overturning can be mitigated by a natural frequency shift, which alters the threshold of critical peak floor acceleration. These results, combined with hazard curves obtained from various locations across Japan, quantify the mean annual frequency of furniture overturning. The study reveals that increased floor acceleration in stiffer BRBFs can lead to a 3.8-fold higher risk of furniture overturning compared to frames without BRBs. This heightened risk also arises from the greater hazards at shorter natural periods due to stricter response reduction demands. The probabilistic risk analysis, which integrates fragility and hazard assessments, provides deeper insights into the evaluation of BCP.

    With demand for the long-term continued use of existing building facilities, structural health monitoring and damage detection are attracting interest from society. Sensors of various types have been practically applied in the industry to satisfy this need. Among the sensors, piezoelectric sensors are an extremely promising technology by virtue of their cost advantages and durability. Although they have been used in aerospace and civil engineering, their application for building engineering remains limited. Remarkably, recent catastrophic seismic events have further reinforced the necessity of rapid damage detection and quick judgment about the safe use of facilities. Faced with these circumstances, this study was conducted to assess the applicability of piezoelectric sensors to detect damage to building components stemming from concrete cracks and local buckling. Specifically, this study emphasizes structural damage caused by earthquakes. After first applying them to cyclic loading tests to composite beam component specimens and steel frame subassemblies with a folded roof plate, the prospective damage positions were also found using finite element analysis. Crack propagation and buckling locations were predicted adequately. The piezoelectric sensors provided output when the concrete slab showed tensile cracks or when the folded roof plate experienced local buckling. Furthermore, damage expansion and progression were detected multiple times during loading tests. Results showed that the piezoelectric sensors can detect the structural damage of building components, demonstrating their potential for use in inexpensive and stable monitoring systems.

    <p>This paper presents the damage mechanism of gymnasium building with RC frame and steel roof structure damaged by the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake. The result of pushover analysis reveals that the damage at top of column progresses from the frame with seismic walls to the moment resisting frame. Furthermore, the damages at top of column around the frame with seismic walls are confirmed by seismic response analysis. Additionally, the cause of the difference between push over analysis and seismic response analysis is investigated in terms of the distribution of external forces and shear forces at the top of column.</p>

    Concrete floor slabs are attached to most of beams in buildings, and it has been considered that they are highly effective in restraining for local buckling and lateral buckling of H-shaped beams during large earthquakes. However, during earthquakes, the concrete slab is also subjected to large cyclic stresses, and its stiffness and bearing capacity decrease gradually through a mechanism in which the stiffness and bearing capacity decrease significantly in tension and recover in compression. On the other hand, the deformation due to local buckling and lateral buckling of H-beams by the floor slab was evaluated with high accuracy in terms of the restraining effect and the ultimate bearing capacity and plastic deformation capacity of beams and columns.
