    The research community needs to respect its members' diversity and discuss how to respond to society's mandate and engage in dialogue with society. To obtain data for discussion and dialogue, we asked members of the Japan Geoscience Union how they perceive the ideals and status of research with a questionnaire. We obtained 292 valid responses shortly before the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2020. Our results showed that the members did not think that the research activities 'giving back to society' contributed to the 'creation of knowledge' compared to the research activities based on intellectual curiosity. A similar amount of positive, negative, and neutral responses was obtained for the current situation in which the number of citations and journal impact factors are used without any discussion of the ideals of researchers.

    Publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals is not only an important part of research, but also an important part of strengthening one's career. This has led to the creation of many scientific metrics using peer-reviewed papers, but there are also many metrics, such as IF, that are widely misused. There are a wide range of targets for evaluation, including papers, individuals, journals, research institutions, and research fields, but it can be said that science can be evaluated correctly only when appropriate indicators are set for the target and content of measurement. Earth and planetary science is a scientific field that takes a variety of approaches toward the 'Earth'. For this reason, various research fields, from basic to applied, coexist to form a single academic field, and it is not easy to compare research results among fields. In addition, each field has its own ideals and culture. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey on 'ideal science and evaluation' among the members of AGU, which is the society of earth and planetary science with the largest number of members on the earth, and we report the results.

    We prepared a cellulose nanofiber reinforced retrograded starch film that had adequate mechanical properties and water durability. Non-retrograded tapioca starch (NRS) and retrograded tapioca starch (RS) were blended with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TCNF) in different weight ratios. Subsequently, the suspensions were cast into films using a solution casting method. It was demonstrated that TCNF/RS films exhibited reduced swelling in water and enhanced mechanical strength compared to TCNF/NRS films. X-ray diffraction confirmed the improvement in crystallinity with the introduction of retrograded starch and the contact angle test showed that retrograded starch blended films possessed high water resistance. These results suggested that retrograded starch blended TCNF films (TCNF/RS) have the potential to replace single-use petrochemical plastic packaging film.

    Hokkaido University provides the special graduate education program 'Nitobe School' from 2015. The program adopts Student Emotional Quotient (SEQ) as a supportive system of the assessment of educational quality. We have reported the result of SEQ for the Japanese Nitobe School students who entered the program in academic year (AY) 2015 previously. This paper reports the results of SEQ for the Japanese students enrolled in AY 2016. We compared the score of AY 2016 students with AY 2015, and found the variation of score in AY 2016 is smaller than AY 2015. On the other hand, the SEQ score of students who dropped out Nitobe School showed a characteristic shape in AY 2016, compared with AY 2015. So, we classified the dropped out students into 'withdrawals' and 'ghost' and analyzed each group SEQ score to clarify the reason of dropout. The results of this analysis showed the 'withdrawals' left the program because they could not stand up and overcome the initial phase of team-building, and the 'ghost' acted a lot to advance teamworking but seem to be suffered from such effort. We found SEQ can be used to detect such hidden suffering students by analyzing the result of SEQ earlier.

    The recent decline in operating expenses subsidy has made the importance of strategic management more essential for National Research and Development Agencies in Japan. For this reason, it is necessary for executives to grasp the current state of the organization correctly in order to make quick and accurate decisions. As we, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), have many large facilities, and the burden of these operating expenses is increasing. Planning office members in JAMSTEC report on IR policies aimed at capturing the signs of potential issues in advance, and directing the operation toward the future and extracting improvement points.

    As an assessment to encourage student growth, Japanese university co-ops develops the original behavior trait test suitable to university students, named Student Emotional Intelligence Quotient (SEQ) in 2001. The test measures student's characteristics of behaviors because their behavior is important more than ability in human relation. There are two ways to encourage students to utilize SEQ, one is lecture on introduction of it, and the other is face-to-face counseling. We have been building a new framework combining the SEQ test, lecture, face-to-face counseling and further pre/post-survey questionnaire to encourage student growth and self-recognition. In this paper, we report the details of this framework, and the preliminary results of pre/post-survey questionnaire for the graduate students who attend the 'Nitobe School' program in Hokkaido University, during Academic Year(AY) 2015 to 2017. This result shows the effectiveness of this framework. In addition, we focus on the suitable timing, number of times and number of students to apply this framework.

    Hokkaido University has launched the special graduate education program 'Nitobe School' in 2015 to develop students' high-level transferable skills as well as to enhance their advanced specialty. The program adopts Student Emotional Intelligent Quotient (SEQ), which measures student's behavior traits based on emotional intelligent theory, as a supportive system of the assessment of educational quality. Students take the SEQ test at the time of enrollment, one year passed and completion of the program to aware the changes of behavior. This paper reports the preliminary result of SEQ score for the Japanese students in academic year 2015 as a first study. The results show the effect of a team-based learning style class in Nitobe School such as improvement of relationship to others. Furthermore, we focus on the similarly of the tendency of between the students who withdraw from the program and who complete.

    For tuning education programs in the higher education, we should identify the status of courses (lectures) in education programs provided by target institutes such as graduate schools, or domestic and international universities relevant to target discipline. As a trial, we chose the courses relevant to environmental science in Hokkaido University, one of the 11 leading research universities in Japan. We extracted 240 syllabuses from 3,006 syllabuses of courses relevant to environmental science listed in an educational support system called ELMS, through the partial matching of Kankyo, a Japanese word of environment, in their course titles or keywords in all syllabuses. We clarified that the courses relevant to environmental science are provided by many graduate schools such as the Graduate Schools of Engineering, Agriculture, Science as well as the Graduate School of Environmental Science. We also found some critical issues when we used ELMS as an Institutional Research (IR) tool, such as duplicate /triplicate syllabuses for the same course, and duplicately/triplicately named courses for the same class due to inconsistency of their syllabuses and no policy for their naming convention of courses.

    In recent years, problem-based learning (PBL) techniques have been gaining momentum inschools and university curricula around the world. The main advantage of the PBL method is that it promotescreative problem solving, improves cognition and enhances overall thought processes in learners. For mostPBL-style programmes, problem solving is at the core, although the notion of problem discovery or problemfinding is not seriously considered. In most cases, students are always presented with a structured and welldefinedproblem, but have no experience of solving an ill-structured problem or ʻwicked' problem. Thepresent study focuses on problem finding as a critical step towards developing problem solving skills inuniversity graduate students. The study aims at understanding the importance of problem formulation andcreativity, and focuses as well on our attempt to teach problem finding as an important tool in thedevelopment of creative thinking and problem solving among graduate students. The study is part of a specialgraduate programme called the Nitobe School at Hokkaido University in Japan, which started in 2015. In anactive learning classroom setting, this course is intended to support graduate students in their discovery of illstructuredproblems, help them to understand their formulation and thereby improve their problem solvingskills. We present the results of our teaching method for the first year at the Nitobe School and share ourfindings through this work.

As a result, it was turnout that students need to take same type of English placement test before and after the program. Also depend on the students future career and/or English ability, student themselves need to choose TOEIC or TOEFL as a placement test at the beginning.

    To correspond to current trend in the international society which is rapidly adopting to the notion of globalization, the graduate education plays a key role in development of human resources for the future. A new trans-graduate-school education program called Nitobe School was launched in 2015 as one of the main education projects of Top Global University Project at Hokkaido University, Japan. To foster the overall development of graduate students and to track their progress throughout the program, Nitobe School introduced a student e-portfolio called NITOBE Portfolio. This portfolio is accessible to the registered students until their graduation. The student can freely interact with the instructors, discuss with fellow students, submit assignments on the e-portfolio and most importantly track individual progress during the course. This paper reports the impact of utilization of student e-portfolio in the program for evaluation, and discusses the system development assuming wide-spread use of such e-portfolio systems for research university in the future.

    To correspond to drastic change in international society such as "globalization", graduate education plays a key role in development of human resources to nurture competencies such as transferable skills as well as their advanced specialty. We report a new trans-graduate-school educational program called the "Nitobe School" in Hokkaido University, which has unique trials and mechanisms: "3+1 Competencies", "Microcosm of international society", "NITOBE Portfolio", and "Systems of Mentors and Advisors". Nitobe School give students supportive push to respect and understand different discipline, nationalities, cultures, and discussing in suitable language. Especially, "Microcosm of international society", i.e. various students having different background learn together in a class room, works well for the students for whom English is not the first language and discuss with diverse students. We spent one year to prepare the coursework as "microcosm of international society" and applied many different mechanisms for promoting students' proactive learning and quality assurance of Nitobe School. In order to realize "microcosm of international society", it is required for professors as well as students to deeply respect and understand key differences. With these skills and understandings, a good platform can be build for faculty development and student guidance.

    The new graduate school education program Nitobe School was launched in 2015 as one of main education projects of "Top Global University Project" in Hokkaido University. This new graduate program is aimed to supply currently undermined skill-set to students from different home graduate or professional school. The scope of the Nitobe School program is to foster students to be a global leader who might contribute not only for local societies but also internationally by Team-Based-Learning (TBL) and Project-Based-Learning (PBL) methods. Since students have different expertise including the area of STEM and humanity, teachers cannot guide classes with their field, rather teachers need to educate students using a general topics. This general education program apparently requires different approaches from the conventional one. After completion of the first year of Nitobe School, we took place the survey that asked students how they felt about our new teaching methods. Overall, students appreciated with the new methods that we carried out, but there are some spaces for further improvement. In this report, we suggest potential ways to improve the Nitobe School program, which will be able to enhance further educating students, and at the same time educate teachers toward the TBL and PBL.

With focus on developing critical thinking and reasoning to solve local and global problems such programs have gained immense popularity among teachers and professors in schools and universities and termed as "Problem-Based-Learning"" (PBL). However, there has been very few programs that encourage students to become better Problem finders. This study is based on our own experience of teaching problem-finding as an important skill for a special graduate program in university education and our findings on its implication on students ability to comprehend real world problems.

    This is a report the change of postgraduate student's English ability through the new trans-graduate-school education program "Nitobe School" in Hokkaido University. In the Nitobe School program, students need to take English placement test before and after the program. Students choose TOEIC or TOEFL as a placement test at the beginning and take same test after the program. Also they can know its result within one month after took a test. Therefore we conducted questioner survey of student's motivation against English study and analyzed the relationship between their motivation and the change of English ability through the program period.

    The circumstances of graduate education have been changed significantly from 1990s in Japan. Especially the case of national universities, the numbers of graduate student increased dramatically, however the basic financial support from the government has been decreased from middle 2000's. As a result, dependence of competitive funding projected by the Japanese government was increased, and the requirements of evidence for the application and evaluation after selection were also increased. These required evidence data include research activities both faculties and graduate students. From the historical changes of requirement, it considered how we make assessment of graduate educational outcomes, because the research activities of graduate students are not only research outcomes, but also educational outcomes of graduate education.

    A core (900 mm long) of the scleractinian coral Dipsastraea (Favia) speciosa was collected from Iki Island (∼33°48′N), Japan, one of the highest latitude coral reefs known to exist at present, where winter monthly mean sea surface temperature (SST) drops to 13°C. The Sr/Ca profile was constructed using a bulk sampling method for the uppermost 280 mm interval of the core, which grew between 1966 and 2007, to test whether it could act as a suitable proxy for SST in a harsh environmental setting where reef-building coral do not usually survive. The Sr/Ca-SST relationship derived from the annual Sr/Ca and SST extremes predicted the observed monthly averaged summer SST extremes within an error range of ±1.1°C (1 s.d., n = 40). The obtained Sr/Ca-SST calibration was also found to be valid for subtropical Dipsastraea (Favia) corals, proving its broad applicability. However, low-amplitude winter peaks were observed in the slow-growing intervals, which we confirmed (using individual spot analysis along a continuous growth line) result from the mixing of theca grown at different times. Our bulk sampling approach, across multiple growth lines in the skeleton of D. (F.) speciosa, led to the mixing of asynchronous skeletal part. At the study site, D. (F.) speciosa grows continuously, even during the cold season, suggesting that the skeletal Sr/Ca obtained from specimens of D. (F.) speciosa can be used as an SST proxy in the northwest Pacific marginal seas. ©2013. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved.

    The physiological effects of high CO 2 concentrations, i.e., [CO 2], on plant stomatal responses may be of major importance in understanding the consequences of climate change, by causing increases in runoff through suppression of plant transpiration. Radiative forcing by high [CO 2] has been the main consideration in models of global change to the exclusion of plant physiological forcing, but this potentially underestimates the effects on the hydrological cycle, and the consequences for ecosystems. We tested the physiological responses of fossil plants from the Triassic-Jurassic boundary transition (Tr-J) succession of East Greenland. This interval marks a major high CO 2-driven environmental upheaval, with faunal mass extinctions and significant floral turnover. Our results show that both stomatal size (expressed in fossil material as SL, the length of the stomatal complex opening) and stomatal density (SD, the number of stomata per mm 2) decreased significantly during the Tr-J. We estimate, using a leaf gas-exchange model, that the decreases in SD and SL resulted in a 50%-60% drop in stomatal and canopy transpiration at the Tr-J. We also present new field evidence indicating simultaneous increases in runoff and erosion rates. We propose that the consequences of sto- matal responses to elevated [CO 2] may lead to locally increased runoff and erosion, and may link terrestrial and marine biodiversity loss via the hydrological cycle. © 2012 Geological Society of America.

    Coral reefs are increasingly faced to the crisis of decline and death caused by climate changes and anthropogenic influence. These crises were reported in Shiraho coral reefs, the Ishigaki Island, Southwestern Japan, caused by the red soils runoff through the Todoroki River. In order to evaluate the influence of terrestrial inputs on coral skeletal growth and coral death, we have analyzed oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios, as well as Mn/Ca ratio, of coral <i>Porites</i>, skeleton collected from Shiraho reef. The coral colony used in this study was still alive but partly dead when the samples were recovered in 20th September 2006. Oxygen isotopic profile of necrosis part indicates that the death may have occurred in winter 2005 when a strongly positive peak of Mn/Ca ratio was observed in the same growth layer of living part, suggesting that increased terrestrial input during sugar cane harvest and closed water system during lower tide level in winter are a possible cause of coral necrosis in the Shiraho coral reefs.

    世界で最も高緯度に位置する、日本の壱岐サンゴ礁より採取されたキクメイシ属サンゴ骨中の酸素・炭素同位体比を分析し、中緯度域における高時間分解能古気候アーカイブとしての可能性を検討した。まず試料は莢壁と軸柱の骨格構造別に分析し、その結果を生育時の環境記録と対比・検討を行った。この結果、軸柱と莢壁は形成のタイミングが異なっており、キクメイシ属サンゴの場合、莢壁の方がより正確に環境を記録することがわかった。また本研究で用いたサンゴ骨格は、骨格構造自体にも成長パターンの季節的変化が見られた。これらの成果を基に、さらに長期に渡る骨格分析を行い、これらを周辺の環境と対比・検討したのでその成果を報告する。

    造礁性サンゴ骨格を用いた古環境復元においては、これまで塊状の群体を形成するハマサンゴ属が主に用いられてきた。キクメイシ属の塊状群体は、ハマサンゴ属のそれよりもさらに高緯度の地域でみられることから、ハマサンゴ属よりも低水温に適応していると考えられている。したがってキクメイシ属の骨格は、従来造礁性サンゴ骨格があまりターゲットにしてこなかった温帯地域での古環境指標として広く利用できる可能性を秘めている。鹿児島県甑島は温帯性の気候帯に属し、ハマサンゴ属とキクメイシ属がどちらも生息している。本研究では、甑島産のハマサンゴとキクメイシの軟X線画像による密度バンドと骨格中の酸素安定同位体比を用いて、両種のサンゴの温帯地域における骨格成長の季節性と、古水温指標としての可能性を比較・検討した。

    To understand the main controlling factors of coral skeletal carbon isotope ratio (δ13Cc), we undertook high-temporal-resolution (∼1.5 d) measurements of δ13Cc for Porites lutea collected from the east coast of Hainan Island, China. The results were compared with factors that have previously been proposed to control coral δ13Cc: skeletal extension rate, carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon in seawater (δ13Cw), and light availability to the coral colony. Hainan Island is characterized by strong summer and winter monsoons that result in distinctive seasonal variations in environmental and coral growth conditions. Compared with other tropical/subtropical areas, this climate is advantageous in evaluating the effects of different environmental factors on δ13Cc. We found that δ13Cc varied in phase with solar radiation. Increased total suspended matter (TSM) in the water column was found to reduce δ13Cc. These data suggest that light availability, the interplay between solar intensity and attenuation of light by TSM in the water column, is the main controlling factor of δ 13Cc in the studied coral. In addition, slower skeletal extension was found during periods of lower solar radiation and high turbidity than other periods of similar temperature conditions, suggesting that both factors influence skeletal growth. Seasonal variations in δ13Cw were not only too narrow in range to explain the observed δ13Cc, but also showed an opposite trend to that of δ13Cc. We also failed to detect δ13Cc variations due to the kinetic isotope effect (i.e., the discrimination of heavier isotopes during CO2 hydration and hydroxylation and the resulting simultaneous negative shifts of δ13Cc and δ18Oc from equilibrium values), despite large variations in the measured skeletal extension rate. This outcome probably reflects the high skeletal extension rates of the studied coral (average, 15 mm/a; minimum, 4 mm/a). Copyright 2008 by the American Geophysical Union.

    In an effort to develop high-resolution sea surface temperature (SST) proxies for mid-latitude regions, two massive reef-building coral species, Alveopora and Favia, were collected from Jeju and Tsushima Islands, respectively. Their skeletons were subsequently analyzed for annual growth banding, Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios. Hermatypic corals are thinly distributed in the waters of Jeju Island, where Alveopora japonica was the only dominant coral species. A higher diversity of hermatypic corals were observed in the waters of Tsushima Island, where Favia sp. was the most common coral species and even forming an about 6-m-high reef structure. Both Alveopora and Favia showed annual growth layers consisting of couplets of high- and low-density bands. Sr/Ca ratio of both species and Mg/Ca ratio of Alveopora also showed seasonal variation, likely reflecting SST variation. These results suggest the possibility that Alveopora and Favia species can be used as potential SST proxies. However, this study also highlights the potential growth disturbance of middle latitude corals due to high rainfall during monsoon and low SST during winter. This possibility should be taken into account in the investigation of Sr/Ca(Mg/Ca)-SST relationships.

    A sediment layer (43 cm thick) and surface sediments (5 cm thick) in a submarine limestone cave (31 m water depth) on the fore-reef slope of Ie Island, off Okinawa mainland, Japan, were examined by visual, mineralogical and geochemical means. Oxygen isotope analysis was performed on the cavernicolous micro-bivalve Carditella iejimensis from both cored sediments and surface sediments, and the water temperature within the cave was recorded for nearly one year. These data show that: (1) water temperature within the cave is equal to that at 30 m deep in the open sea; (2) the biotic and non-biotic environments within the cave have persisted for the past 2000 years; (3) mud-size carbonate detritus is a major constituent of the submarine-cave deposit, and may have come mainly from the suspended carbonate mud produced on the emergent Holocene reef flat over the past two millennia; (4) the δ18O-derived temperature (Tδ18O) of C. iejimensis suggests that the species grows between April and July; (5) the Tδ18O of C. iejimensis from cored sediments implies that there were two warmer intervals, at AD 340 ± 40 and AD 1000 ± 40, which correspond to the Roman Warm Period and Medieval Warm Period, respectively. These suggest that submarine-cave sediments provide unique information for Holocene reef development. In addition, oxygen isotope records of cavernicolous C. iejimensis are a useful tool to reconstruct century-scale climatic variability for the Okinawa Islands during the Holocene. © 2006.

    産業技術総合研究所の第2白嶺丸によるGH10航海で、沖縄本島西方海域から採取された表層堆積物中の有機物分析結果およびそれに付随して得られたデータに関して予察的報告を行う。有機物に関しては、全有機物含有量、C/N比、安定炭素・窒素同位体比分析結果を示し、付随データとして炭酸塩および塩類の含有量、岩石由来砕屑物量に関して報告する。
