    <title>ABSTRACT</title>
The solar activity during the Maunder minimum (MM; 1645–1715) has been considered significantly different from the one captured in modern observations, in terms of sunspot group number and sunspot positions, whereas its actual amplitudes and distributions are still under active discussions. In its core period (1650/1660–1700), Martin Fogelius and Heinrich Siverus have formed significant long-term series in the existing data bases. With numerous spotless days, they have been considered as the 13th and 7th most active observers before the end of the MM. In this study, we have analysed their original archival records, revised their data, have removed significant contaminations of the apparent ‘spotless days’ in the existing data bases, and cast caveats on the potential underestimation of the solar-cycle amplitude in the core MM. Still, they reported at best one sunspot group throughout their observational period and confirm the significantly suppressed solar cycles during the MM. This is also supported from the contemporary observations of Hook and Willoughby, analysed in this study. Based on their revised data, we have also derived positions of notable sunspot groups, which Siverus recorded in 1671 (≈N7.5° ± 2.5°), in comparison with those of Cassini's drawings (≈N10° ± 1°). Their coincidence in position and chronology in corrected dates indicates these sunspot groups were probably the same recurrent active region (AR) and its lifespan was significantly long (≥35 d) even during the MM.

People have probably been watching the sky since the beginning of human history. Observers in pre-telescopic ages recorded anomalous events, which now provide uniquely valuable information for modern scientists. Records that include drawings are particularly useful, since the verbal expressions recorded by pre-telescopic observers, who did not know the physical nature of the phenomena, are often ambiguous. However, drawings concerning specific datable events in the historical documents are far fewer than the verbal records. Therefore, in this paper we show the possible earliest drawings of datable auroras and a two-tail comet included in a manuscript of the Chronicle of Z (u) over bar qn (i) over barn, a Syriac chronicle up to 775/776 CE, to interpret their nature. Careful perusing the original Syriac autograph manuscript, MS Vat. Sir. 162, provide not only historical facts in the realm around Amida, but also information concerning low-latitude aurora observations due to extreme space weather events and the existence of sun-grazing comets.

A significant carbon-14 enhancement has recently been found in tree rings for the year 994, suggesting an extremely strong and brief cosmic ray flux event. The origin of this particular cosmic ray event has not been confirmed, but one possibility is that it might be of solar origin. Contemporary historical records of low-latitude auroras can be used as supporting evidence of intense solar activity around that time. We investigate previously reported as well as new records that have been found in contemporary observations from the 990s to determine potential auroras. Records of potential red auroras in late 992 and early 993 were found around the world, i.e. in the Korean Peninsula, Saxonian cities in modern Germany, and the Island of Ireland, suggesting the occurrence of an intense geomagnetic storm driven by solar activity.

This paper focused on three main issues regarding the brutal murder of George of Cappadocia on 24 December 361 CE in Alexandria and the question of whether the "pagans" attempted to prevent the cult of the martyr. First, an examination of the sources regarding the murderers of George found that the Alexandrian crowd did not only consist of pagans. Instead, everyone who had suffered from the tyranny of George could be possible assailants. Second, Ammianus' report that the intention of the people was to defile the victims' remains is highly contested. Regarding fourth-century Alexandria, it is impossible to find any evidence that refers to such an attempt. Third, his text exposed a somewhat ruthless image of pagans as presented by Christian authors such as Prudentius. Despite Ammianus being not a Christian himself, his account reflects the images of the cruel pagans fabricated by Christians, thus allowing us to acknowledge the Christianised view of pagans in the work of the last great Latin historian.

Emperor Julian the Apostate remains controversial character until the present day. Among the people who met him personally, we know Gregory of Nazianzus as the most incisive critic against Julian. Contrary, Ammianus Marcellinus is considered as one of the eulogist of Julian by researchers through his Res Gestae relating the Roman history from 96 to 378 CE. What seems to be lacking is a comparison between two authors on their different and shared attitude toward Julian’s deeds. In this presentation, I try to show that one of the processes making the image of the emperor Julian.

The studies on late antique historiography, including several Ecclesiastical Histories, Chronicles, and so-called abbreviated histories, have advanced since the late twentieth century. Among many approaches, several studies have proved that the historians of Late Antiquity used much more sources to write their works than it had been supposed. In this study, the sources which Socrates of Constantinople used in his Ecclesiastical History (written in the middle fifth century) will be discussed. In the earlier studies, it had been stated that he mainly used brief and abbreviated historiographical works. This presentation, however, explores the relationship between the Res Gestae (written in the late fourth century) of Ammianus Marcellinus, which contains much longer and detailed narratives, and the Ecclesiastical History of Socrates. This investigation allow us to reconsider how Socrates used his sources and wrote his Ecclesiastical History, and to reveal an aspect of the late antique historiographical context.

The Later Roman Empire from 4th to 5th centuries CE experienced many civil wars. This research put its focus on post-civil war imperial governance, investigating how the winners restored social and political order. The sources to be explored were Greek and Latin historiographies, panegyrical discourses, and imperial laws. This study provides some specific aspects of the character of historiographical sources, imperial policies, and the impacts of civil-war on the late Roman world.
