Profile
I am engaged in the research of ancient Egyptian pyramids. Since 2004, I have been a member of the Ancient Egypt Research Associates, Inc. (AERA) and have been involved in the excavation research of Heit el-Ghurab, also known as "Pyramid Town," which is ancient settlement from the Pyramid Age at Giza. Since 2005, I have been advancing 3D survey studies on megalithic structures centered around the pyramids in the Memphite area, in a multi-disciplinary and international project in collaboration with AERA, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, and the Czech Institute of Egyptology. To date, I have successfully completed 3D measurement surveys of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the tomb of Queen Khentkawes, the Step Pyramid of King Netjerikhet at Saqqara—which is Egypt's oldest pyramid—and a group of pyramids from the 5th Dynasty at Abusir.

    <p>In recent years, studies of the three Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt have been conducted from multiple perspectives, yielding a variety of archaeological data about them including texts, excavated artifacts, and environmental data. Survey data on pyramid form, however, has rarely been updated.     Studies on the great pyramid of King Khufu (2509-2483 BCE ±25) in Egypt are numerous, but only a few surveys, which are the basis of any hypotheses on the construction of a pyramid, have been conducted. In particular, since no observation of the core of the pyramid has been made, theories about the structure are still hypothetical. In 2013, a Japanese TV production company had the opportunity to climb the northeast corner of the pyramid to shoot a crevice that led to an open space (named 'cave') inside the pyramid, located about 80m from the ground. The authors are fortunate to be allowed to use this video footage for academic research. We employed a 'structure from motion' (SfM) technique using Microsoft Photosynth to reconstruct the 3D point cloud of the surface of the cave. Twenty minutes of footage was split into thirty thousand image frames, out of which we selected three hundred images shot using several smooth motions of the camera and used these for the SfM process. SfM tracks the 'feature points' in the image sequence to estimate the camera motion and then triangulates these feature points to produce the point clouds. As a result, the static feature points from the overall surface of the cave were effectively collected and reconstructed as point clouds, whereas inconsistent points from a moving person are automatically eliminated through the SfM process. Thus we have produced, albeit in a small area, the first record of the actual structure of the great pyramid's core. The production of a 3D model from existing video footage is a rather new methodology in the field of archaeology. This set of techniques can be applied to not only academic investigation but also to the restoration and conservation of damaged heritage and artifacts. © 2013 IEEE.

    Giza Plateau Mapping Project (GPMP) directed by Egyptologist Dr. Mark Lehnar achieved digital modeling of the monument of Queen Khentkawess, as known as the fourth pyramid in Giza. As members of GPMP, the authors report how this digital modeling and volume computation of it were done. First, the monument of Queen Khentkawess was scanned by laser radars with 5[mm] mesh accuracy in average. Some parts of wall of the monument on which hieroglyphs appear were scanned separately with a very high-accuracy (0.1[mm] mesh) laser scanner. Second, these scanned raw data were combined, aligned, and integrated into complete 3-D geometry model on a computer. Finally, computation of volumes of the monument was done from the geometry data of the monument, so that archaeologists could use for investigating relationship among the monument and Great Pyramids, Sphinx, and other temples around Giza Plateau. For this purpose the authors have developed a novel approach for computing volume from laser-scanned set of points (point cloud). © 2012 IEEE.

    In this study, my team has carried out a 3D measurement survey of the Sphinx and the Sphinx Temple embedded in the Pyramid complex of King Khafre of the Fourth Dynasty (c. 2472-2448 BC) of the Old Kingdom, located on the Giza Plateau, and also of the unfinished royal tomb of King Raneferef of the Fifth Dynasty (c. 2404 BC), built at Abshir, 11 km south of the Giza site. In addition, the production of the 3D data of the three Great Pyramids of Giza obtained and the analysis of these data have enabled us to present quantitatively that the slope "seked 2" is used for the internal structure and "seked 5 1/2" for the external.
    These data eventually constituted an online archive using "BOX", a cloud storage service, in an attempt to centralise the data.

    This study revealed that local researchers could collect image data of cultural property for the image archival system in the crisis of the cultural property in Egypt. Although the archival system in Internet cloud still a work in progress, our study can also show that the establishment of the system is feasible. In addition, this system can be applied on not only small objects but also medium scale object/archaeological site, and a large-scale archaeological site such as a pyramid. The image archival system can be applied to laser scanners jointly. Particularly, with mathematical optimization (quantitatively modeled strategy), the archival work is more appropriate.
