    Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have been used as platforms for quantum information, magnetometry and imaging of microwave (MW) fields. The spatial distribution of the MW fields used to drive the electron spin of NV centers plays a key role for these applications. Here, we report a system for the control and characterization of MW magnetic fields used for the NV spin manipulation. The control of the MW field in the vicinity of a diamond surface is mediated by an exchangeable lumped resonator, coupled inductively to a MW planar ring antenna. The characterization of the MW fields in the near-field is performed by an FFT imaging of Rabi oscillations, by using an ensemble of NV centers. We have found that the Rabi frequency over a lumped resonator is enhanced 22 times compared to the Rabi frequency without the presence of the lumped resonator. Our system may find applications in quantum information and magnetometry where a precise and controlled spin manipulation is required, showing NV centers as good candidates for imaging MW fields and characterization of MW devices.

  8. Unusual Superconducting Proximity Effect in Magnetically Doped Topological Josephson Junctions

    The transport properties of a topological Josephson junction fabricated from a magnetically doped topological insulator (TI) were investigated. The conductance spectra of the Nb/Fe-Bi2Te2Se/Nb junction below 1 K showed an unusual trident-shaped zero-bias conductance peak with a tiny peak width of ∼6 µV. The central peak of the trident peak presents the dc-Josephson current, and the side peaks may reflect an induced unconventional Cooper pairing. Additionally, the critical currents followed inverse to temperature, which may also reflect the presence of an unconventional proximity effect. Furthermore, microwave irradiation drived a drastic change in the conductance spectra from the peak structure into oscillatory ones, a hallmark of the ac-Josephson supercurrent. The current-phase relation of the ac-Josephson effect under high power radiofrequency-irradiation was found to be 4π-periodic. The results suggest that the junction based on magnetically doped 3D TIs may realize an unconventional Cooper pairing, thus enabling access to the basic physics of Majorana bound states and unconventional superconductivity.

    Sr2RuO4 is one of the most promising candidates of a topological superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry because a number of experiments have revealed evidence for a spin-triplet chiral p-wavesuperconductivity. To clarify the time-reversal symmetry of
    Sr2RuO4, we introduce a test that examines the invariance of the Josephson critical current under the inversion of both the current and magnetic fields, in contrast to the detection of a spontaneous magnetic field employed in past experiments. Analyses of the transport properties of the planar and corner Josephson junctions formed between
    Sr2RuO4 and Nb reveal the time-reversal invariant superconductivity, most probably helical
    p-wave symmetry, of Sr2RuO4. This state corresponds to a yet-to-be confirmed topological crystalline superconductivity that can host two Majorana edge modes at the surface protected by crystalline mirror symmetry.

    Magnetometry utilizing a spin qubit in a solid state possesses high sensitivity. In particular, a magnetic sensor with a high spatial resolution can be achieved with the electron-spin states of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in the diamond. In this study, we demonstrated that NV quantum sensing based on multiple-pulse decoupling sequences can sensitively measure not only the amplitude but also the phase shift of an alternating-current (AC) magnetic field. In the AC magnetometry based on decoupling sequences, the maximum phase accumulation of the NV spin due to an AC-field can be generally obtained when the π-pulse period in the sequences matches the half time period of the field and the relative phase difference between the sequences and the field is zero. By contrast, the NV quantum sensor acquires no phase accumulation if the relative phase difference is π/2. Thus, this phase-accumulation condition does not have any advantage for the magnetometry. However, we revealed that the nonphase-accumulation condition is available for detecting a very small phase shift of an AC-field from its initial phase. Measurements of the real part and the imaginary part of AC impedance require the amplitude and the phase information of an AC-field, and thus, this finding is expected to provide a guide for realizing sensitive measurement of AC impedance in the micrometer and nanometer scales.

    Quantum sensors based on the electron spin states of nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond have found wide application in magnetometry and nuclear spin magnetic resonance measurements. Previously, we have theoretically and experimentally investigated the effect of finite pulse width on quantum sensing for synchronous alternating-current (AC) magnetic fields to dynamical decoupling sequences [T. Ishikawa et al., Phys. Rev. Appl. 10, 054059 (2018)]. However, many biological and condensed-matter systems exhibit fluctuating AC fields over time, and thus, our model needs modifications because of additional non-ideal conditions in practical measurements. Here, we investigate the effects of finite pulse width of multiple-pulse decoupling sequences on quantum sensing for asynchronous AC magnetic fields. For this purpose, we use a spin ensemble of nitrogen vacancy centers in an isotopically purified diamond film. We reveal through experiments that the finite-width pulse causes shifts in AC magnetometry signals in a free-precession-time plot. In addition, our results indicate that the finite-width pulse affects the amplitude of magnetometry signals, implying that the finite-pulse-width effect should be taken into account for realizing accurate measurement of the frequency and amplitude of asynchronous AC magnetic fields.

    We studied magnetized topological insulator/superconductor junctions with the
    expectation of unconventional superconductive states holding Majorana fermions induced by
    superconductive proximity effects on the surface states of magnetized topological insulators (TIs),
    attached by conventional superconductors. We introduced Fe-doped BiSbTe2Se as an ideal magnetic
    TI and used the developed junction fabrication process to access the proximity-induced surface
    superconducting states. The bulk single crystals of the Fe-doped TI showed excellent bulk-insulating
    properties and ferromagnetism simultaneously at a low temperature. Meanwhile, the fabricated
    junctions also showed an insulating behavior above 100 K, as well as metallic conduction at a low
    temperature, which reflects bulk carrier freezing. In addition, we observed a proximity-induced gap
    structure in the conductance spectra. These results indicate that the junctions using the established
    materials and process are preferable to observe unconventional superconducting states which are
    induced via the surface channels of the magnetized TI. We believe that the developed process can be
    applied for the fabrication of complicated junctions and suites for braiding operations

    We have explored novel topological materials based on crystal symmetry and investigated emergent quantum phenomena and exotic quasiparticles associated with the topological properties of such materials. By combining state-of-the-art bulk-crystal-growth / molecular-beam-epitaxy techniques and advanced spectroscopies such as spin-ARPES and tunneling microscopy, we established controllability of Dirac fermions at the surface and interface of topological insulators. Moreover, we discovered several new types of topological semimetals, as represented by noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetals, topological semimetals with new chiral fermions, and line-node semimetals protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetries of crystal. We have also conducted experiments on superconducting hybrids/junctions to pin down pairing symmetry, and found several new topological-superconductor candidates. By introducing the concept of topology, new insights in the physics of odd-frequency Cooper pairing were also obtained.

    We have developed a systematic method to obtain the electromagnetic response of Majorana fermions in topological superconductors. In particular, using the K-theory classification of topological superconductors and the representation theory of Majorana fermions with respect to crystal symmetry, we succeeded in developing a theory that relates the symmetry of the Cooper pairing to the magnetic response of Majorana fermions. We also developed a theory for superconductor junctions, which play an important role in detecting topological superconductivity. Furthermore, we obtained experimental results that support the idea that CaAgP is a new topological superconductor. In addition, we have also performed a fundamental study of the non-Hermitian topological phase, which is important for incorporating dissipation effects into topological superconductors.

    In this research project, we have performed research on the preparation of nuclear spin-lattice by fluorination of the diamond surface, on the development of a system for the control and readout of nuclear spin-electron states, on high sensitivity AC field detection using the Hadamard basis, and on control and readout of the nuclear spin states. We have successfully detected AC magnetic field by a spin-locking method at high sensitivity, and have successfully visualized the image of RF field distribution. Furthermore, we have successfully initialized the nuclear spin states by using nonselective microwave pulses and observed Rabi oscillations of the nuclear spin state.

    (1)Influence of the impurity scattering in unconventional superconductor / normal metal junctions on the charge transport profile including charge conductance and shot noise (2)Non-local conductance in the superconductor double quantum dot hybrid system (3)Double semiconductor nano-wires on the superconductor from the view point of odd-frequency pairings. Also, we have studied two channel Kondo lattice where bulk odd-frequency gap function is realized. We have calculated tunneling conductance and Josephson current in this model. Experimentally, we have measured a surface impedance of Au/ Sr2RuO4 junctions. We have found anomalous temperature dependence as compared to conventional superconductor Al. We have also developed a suspended normal metal type tunneling junction refrigerator.

    We have theoretically investigated single-photon and biomolecular-ion detectors using superconducting nanostrips on the basis of the numerical simulation solving the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations. We numerically verified that the hot-spot model without nucleation of vortices is adequate for ion detectors, whereas the vortex motion plays crucial roles for local normal transition of superconducting strips for single-photon detectors. Biomolecular-ion detectors using MgB2 superconducting nanostrips are thermally stable and have high detection efficiency. Furthermore, we have theoretically proposed a new single-photon detectors in which photon assisted vortices in superconducting nanostrips are detected by single-flux-quantum (SFQ) circuits.

    We have developed new local magnetic field measurement system using SQUIDs (Al tunnel junction, Nb weak link, and FIB-CVD W type) in this study. We have tried to observe the chiral edge currents, using this system, to prove experimentally that Sr2RuO4 is a chiral P wave spin triplet superconductor.
    However, chiral edge currents, etc., phenomenons that show clearly chiral superconductivity has not been observed.

    We develop a superconducting-normal metal-superconductor tunneling junction refrigerator of a suspended normal-metal type for cooling of high sensitive sensors working at ultralow temperature. The performance of the refrigerator is evaluated by comparing experimental conductance with numerical results of a theoretical formulation. The lowest temperature of 0.093 K at a bath temperature of 0.334 K indicates the successful operation of the refrigeration. The maximum cooling power of the present refrigerator estimated based on the non-equilibrium stationary state model is 213 pW at the junction area of 40 x 7 m2.

    Development of micro-SQUID-NMR technique has been carried out for the quantum condensed matter research. A preliminary cw-NMR experiment using commercial SQUID has been performed in order to judge feasibility of the micro-SQUID-NMR in 27-Al signal. New sample probe was constructed, but in the first experiment the NMR signal has been not detected. It may be important to employ micro-SQUIDs with an adequate size of the superconducting loop.

    To clarify the topological quantum phenomena, especially novel surface/interface phenomena, in superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry, we investigated ruthenate superconductor Sr2RuO4 and its eutectic, as well as hybrid systems consisting of a conventional superconductor and a ferromagnet.
    We discovered the half-quantum flux state in micro-rings of Sr2RuO4, and in-gap density of states indicating its chiral-edge mode. We also accumulated new facts concerning its superconducting symmetry, such as reconfirming evidence for spin-triplet pairing from NMR and the first-order superconducting transition under in-plane magnetic fields. We deepened our knowledge of the odd-frequency pairing state characteristic of topological superconductivity. We developed a hybrid system of ferromagnetic thin film of SrRuO3 deposited on the Sr2RuO4 crystal surface, which is ideal for the investigation of novel proximity effects involving odd-frequency pairing.

    Odd-frequency pairing is a exotic state where Cooper pair changes its sign with the exchange of times of two electrons. We have clarified anomalous surface impedance of spin-triplet superconductor junctions, anomalous Meissner effect in ferromagnet / superconductor junctions and relevance of anomalous Majorana fermion and odd-frequency pairing. In the experimental works, spin-triplet superconductor junctions have been made. Tunneling spectroscopy has been performed on junctions made from spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 searching for the edge states peculiar to topological superconductivity. By comparing the experiments with predictions forunconventional superconductivity, these varieties are shown to originate from multiband chiral p-wave symmetry with weak anisotropy of pair amplitude. The broad hump in the conductance spectrum is a direct manifestation of the edge state due to chiral p-wave superconductivity. Also, T shaped proximity coupled superconductor has been made from Sr2RuO4.

    Fabrication process of nano-SQUID for a detection of a single spin and the time relaxation process of several spin was confirmed. Using self-assembled InAs-quantum dot coupled SQUID, π-operation of the SQUID succeeded. This is the first step to the quantum interface. About the device application of a SQUID, we fabricated SRO-SQUID of non S-wave SQUID made of Sr2RuO4 and confirmed the transition fromπ-SQUID-State to zero-SQUID-state in the 3K-phase ofp-wave superconductor.

    We develop a fabrication process of Sr2RuO4(SRO)-based microdevices searching for the possible existence of half flux quanta in chiral p-wave superconductors. The single crystals of SRO were sliced into pellets of 10-20 μm thickness and then patterned using focused ion beam (FIB). We have succeeded in fabricating weak link Josephson junctions and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) using the FIB process. The transport properties of the SQUID measured below 1.5K show the presence of a superconducting current in weak link bridges, but the switching of the weak link to the finite voltage states against the increment of the bias current is unstable. Expected modulation of the critical current to the applied magnetic field has not been detected. This is possibly due to the effects of the edge current and the chiral domains inevitably existing in the electrodes of SRO.

    In order to establish the physics of spin-triplet superconductivity, for which the spins of the electrons in addition to their charges exhibit superfluidity, we investigated systems based on Sr2RuO4. Using superclean single crystals, we obtained strong evidence to clarify the spin directions of electron pairs and their collective motions. In addition, using hybrid materials consisting of Sr2RuO4 and normal metals, we demonstrated novel phenomena specific to spin-triplet state. We also developed theories of microscopic mechanism of the spin-triplet superconductivity as well as the "odd-frequency pairing states" emerging near the boundaries.

    Symmetry of the Cooper pair can be generally classified into even-frequency spin-singlet even-parity (ESE) state, even-frequency spin-triplet odd-parity (ETO) state, odd-frequency spin-triplet even-parity (OTE) state and odd-frequency spin-singlet odd-parity (OSO) state. We present a general theory of the proximity effect in junctions between diffusive normal metals (DN) and unconventional superconductors in the framework of the Green's function formalism. Above four possible symmetry classes in a superconductor are considered: ESE, ETO, OTE and OSO state. For each of the above four cases symmetry and spectral properties of the induced pair amplitude in the DN are determined where only the even-parity s-wave pairing is possible due to the impurity scattering in DN. It is shown that the pair amplitude in a DN belongs respectively to an ESE, OTE, OTE and ESE pairing state In the presence of the Odd-frequency pairing state, the resulting density of state has a zero energy peak. The generation of the OTE state in the DN attached to the ETO p-wave superconductor is of particular interest in the relevance to the novel proximity effect in Sr2RuO4 junctions. In order to resolve this point, we are now preparing the junction made from Sr2RuO4 Using FIG technique. We further demonstrate that, quite generally, the spin-singlet even-parity (spin-triplet odd-parity) pair potential in a superconductor induces the odd-frequency pairing component with spin-singlet odd-parity (spin-triplet even-parity) near interfaces. The magnitude of the induced odd-frequency component is enhanced in the presence of the midgap Andreev resonant state due to the sign change of the anisotropic pair potential at the interface. We discussed the electronic Raman spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. The Raman spectra are calculated using the Keldysh Green's function theory taking into account the order parameter collective mode. We take into account the effect of impurity scattering. The impurity scattering gives rise to considerable modification of the contribution from the quasiparticle excitations to the Raman spectra and simultaneously to the broadening of the collectivemode resonance peak and the shift of the peak position.
