    Automatic Weather Stations (AWSs) with ultrasonic snow depth sensors were newly installed at four sites. The installation was started in January 2016 and completed in October 2019. The sites are H128 in the coastal region, MD78 in the continental slope region with the katabatic wind, NRP in the inland high region on the upside of the continental slope, and NDF on the summit of the ice sheet. The purpose of this AWS system is to clarify the temporal variations of accumulations affected by synoptic-scale disturbances and diurnal variations while reflecting the regional characteristics over a wide area of the Antarctic ice sheet. This paper investigates the temporal variations of surface height observed at these four sites. The results are as follows: 1) The temporal changes of surface height include stepwise fluctuations and pulse-like fluctuations, and the rise in surface height is mainly caused by stepwise rises, rather than pulse-like fluctuations. 2) A comparison between H128 and NRP showed four cases in which surface height fluctuations appeared simultaneously over a wide area. The NOAA infrared image reveals that the cloud area associated with a synoptic-scale disturbance formed over the ice sheet. 3) The surface height is less likely to rise largely between different sites on the same day. 4) At the three sites other than NRP, a slow decline in surface height was observed during the warm season.

    氷床コアから気温復元を行う際、酸素同位体比d18Oと気温の線形関係が用いられてきたが、現在の観測で得られる係数と、時代の違いによる係数(temporal slope)に違いがあることがわかってきた。その要因の候補がいくつかあるが、詳しい解析はなされていない。本研究では、安定水同位体モデルを組み込んだMIROC 大気大循環モデルを用い、現在気候と最終氷期最大期(LGM)の気候条件を与えたシミュレーションを行った。海面水温、海氷は、MIROC大気海洋結合大循環モデルによって得られた結果を用いた。MIROCによる現在気候シミュレーションは、よく降水のd18O分布を表している。また、LGMと現在気候のd18O変化は、氷床コアの値と整合的である。この結果、temporal slopeは氷床上でも地域的な変化があることが示された。LGMでの、temporal slopeの違いに及ぼす影響を解析し発表する。

    Important studies on water cycle processes using stable isotope of water were reviewed. The objective papers on the global-scale water cycle were studies including isotopic ratios of ocean surface water and those of water vapor over the ocean as well as studies on atmospheric circulations using AGCM (atmospheric general circulation model) with stable isotope of water. Regional-scale studies on runoff processes, evapotranspiration or vegetation-related processes, and meso-scale precipitation processes were also revisited. Additionally studies on the paleoclimate and cryospheric processes, which closely related to temporal variations of water cycle processes, were focused. Finally, perspectives on the water cycle study using stable isotope of water were summarized.

    Recently, unusually high snowfall events, unprecedented for the past 60 years, have been observed in East Antarctica. Here we use shipboard observations of water vapor isotopologues along a ship track between Australia and Syowa on the East Antarctic coast, along with reanalysis data (ERA-Interim) to elucidate the mechanism by which large-scale circulations influences the marine air intrusions.
    Generally, marine air intrusions play an important role in delivering heavy snowfall in Antarctica. Isotopic variations while the ship was near Syowa reflect the contribution of marine moisture to the total moisture in the air. In the case when maritime air masses were dominant corresponded to a period when poleward moisture flow was enhanced by large-scale circulation. This result indicates that large-scale flows push marine air mass toward the inland across the Antarctic coast. Recent unusual snowfall events may therefore reflect the large-scale circulation changes over the Southern Hemisphere.

  3. 大循環モデルと安定同位体を用いたシベリアにおける大陸水循環に関する研究

    研究実施計画書に基づき、行った研究実績を以下にまとめる。
    (1)水蒸気同位体観測法の確立
    当初使用予定だった商用の除湿器が製造中止になってしまった為に、今回汎用品の流用をあきらめ、新たに自動で水蒸気を簡便に採取できる装置の開発を行った。新方式では、密閉容器内を加圧し、飽和水蒸気を越えた水蒸気が凝結し、容器下部に凝結水が溜まる仕組みになっている。またこの新方式の採取装置で採取された水蒸気の同位体比が現実の値を再現しているか明らかにするために、同位体機知の水蒸気を発生させられる、水蒸気発生装置の開発も同時に行った。この水蒸気発生装置で生成された水蒸気を新方式の水蒸気補修装置で採取したところ、捕集した水蒸気の同位体比は、発生させたものと比較して同位体濃度が高くでることがわかり、回収率が100%でないことに起因する誤差があることが確認され、現在その誤差を補正する実験式を作成する作業を継続している。今回は採取装置の開発が遅れた為に、補助金支給期間内に装置を野外観測に応用するところまではできなかったが、汎用的な新しい装置そのものは完成させることができた。
    (2)シベリアにおける広域同位体観測ステーションの設置
    シベリアでの観測は、現地の情勢変化に実施が困難となったために、チベット高原において、大陸内部における水蒸気の同位体比変動観測を行った。現地観測は、2004年8月にチベット高原中部に位置する那曲で行い、地表付近の水蒸気を6時間毎に連続して2週間観測を行った。また、採取した水蒸気に地表面からの蒸発散水の寄与を調べるために地表面から蒸発する水蒸気を同時に採取した。まず観測された蒸発散水の同位体比は、午前から夕方に向かって徐々に同位体比が高くなる顕著な日変化を示すとともに,表層の土壌水分量の変化に応じた顕著な時系列変化を示した。この原因を調べるために、鉛直1次元の陸面モデルに同位体組み込んだモデル解析結果を使って調べたところ、大まかな変化は、降水の同位体比変化に応答していることが示された。また、さらに細かい変動では、蒸発と蒸散の寄与率変化に応じて同位体比が変化しており、同位体トレーサーは、蒸発と蒸散の比の時間変化を調べる非常によいトレーサーであることが今回の観測から明らかになった.(Kurita and Yoshimura, 2006)。次にこのような顕著な時間変化が観測された地表面FLUXの同位体比変動と、地表付近で観測された水蒸気の同位体比を比較したところ、水蒸気の同位体比は、蒸発散水の変動に応答した時系列変動を示しており、地表面で観測される水蒸気は、大規模な循環を反映したものというよりもむしろ局地的な影響を強くうけていることがわかった。昨年の解析では、降水と水蒸気の同位体比が一致していることから、水蒸気の同位体比変化は、大気循環場の変動を反映していると考えられたが、今回のモデル結果から、降水が蒸発散水の変動に大きく影響しているために、地表面の水蒸気の同位体比変化と降水の同位体比の変化が一致していることが明らかになり、大気循環変動を解釈するためには、より高々度において同位体観測を行う必要性が今回の観測から示された。
    (3)同位体大規模循環モデル結果の検証
    既存の同位体大循環モデルを最新版のCCSR/NIES/FRCGCに移植する作業を昨年度から引き続き行い、プログラムバグの修正等を引き続き行うことで、観測された同位体比の特徴を再現することが可能になった。最新の結果では、シベリア域で観測された内陸部に向かって夏期に降水の同位体比が徐々に減少するといった特徴を再現することが可能になり、この同位体比変動は、地表面から蒸発する水の同位体比の分布が同様に内陸に向かうにつれて軽くなることが原因であることがわかった。これは、西シベリアでは、一降水の同位体比の季節変化に応じて表層土壌水の同位体比が変化しているのに対し、東シベリアでは、夏期に降水する同位体比よりも、軽い同位体比をもった水が維持されることに起因している。つまり、東シベリアでは、夏期の土壌水分に、夏期降水よりも軽い同位体比をもつ融雪の寄与が残っており、この融雪水の寄与がシベリアにおける蒸発水の同位体分布を作り出していることが明らかになった。このように同位体モデルを使って観測値を再現することによって、これまで観測できなかった、夏期降水に対する融雪水の寄与を証明することが可能になった。
