This study aims to compare the grain yield, gross return above fertilizer cost (GRAFC: (paddy sales)–(fertilizer cost)), and several parameters relating to the quality of white rice cultivated with different soil-specific nutrient management in 14 provinces where different soil types are distributed. The grain yield tended to increase with increased fertilizer application; however, the relationship between the fertilization rate and the yield was not linear in areas where clay soil dominates. In cases of popular varieties cultivated from the northern to southern province, the amount of fertilizer applied was up to 163 kg ha−1 (sum of N-P2O5-K2O), and the GRAFC and the fertilization rate showed a nonlinear relationship, with a peak of around 120 kg ha−1 fertilization. The nitrogen concentration recognized as a negative factor for the quality of rice tended to increase with an increasing fertilization rate, and the carbohydrate concentration and carbohydrate/protein ratio that are a positive factor for the quality were related negatively with the fertilizer rate. The amylopectin concentration in white rice was positively related with the carbohydrate concentration, which decreased with an increasing fertilization rate. The levels of fertilizer application required to achieve a higher yield, GRAFC, and the maintenance and improvement of parameters relating to grain quality were different.

Waterlogged Conditions Influence the Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Sugar Distribution in Sago Palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) at Seedling Stages 査読有り国際誌

Sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) grows in well-drained mineral soil and in peatland with high groundwater levels until complete submersion. However, the published information on nutrient uptake and carbohydrate content in sago palms growing under waterlogging remains un-reported. This experiment observed sago palm growth performance under normal soil conditions (non-submerged conditions) as a control plot and extended waterlogged conditions. Several parameters were analyzed: Plant morphological growth traits, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sugar concentration in the plant organ, including sucrose, glucose, starch, and non-structural car-bohydrate. The analysis found that sago palm morphological growth traits were not significantly affected by extended waterlogging. However, waterlogging reduced carbohydrate levels in the up-per part of the sago palm, especially the petiole, and increased sugar levels, especially glucose, in roots. Waterlogging also reduced N concentration in roots and leaflets and P in petioles. The K level was independent of waterlogging as the sago palm maintained a sufficient level in all of the plant organs. Long duration waterlogging may reduce the plant’s economic value as the starch level in the trunk decreases, although sago palm can grow while waterlogged.

In the state of Sarawak, Malaysia’s vast peatland cultivated with sago palm (Metroxylon sagu), a considerable amount of cases involving stunted, nondeveloped trunk of sago palms was observed. Molecular-level understanding of the mechanism or pathway involved in the trunking (T) process leading to storage starch accumulation in the trunk of the sago palm is yet to be fully understood. A Polymerase Chain Reaction-based differential display analysis using Annealing Control Primer based GeneFishing technique on leaf samples of normal T compared to the nontrunking (NT) palm showed distinct differentially expressed transcripts pattern with differences in intensity between 35% and 123%. The translated sequence identified functions that are grouped under energy metabolism, nutrient regulation, biosynthetic reactions, defense mechanism, and stress tolerance. Transcripts from T showed higher expression of redox-regulating functions, while NT samples had proteins actively involved in the respiratory chain and chloroplast regulation. In nutrient regulation, the T sample showed higher transcript levels of nitrogen utilization and regulation of phosphate and cobalt, whereas NT showed activities of nitrogen uptake and regulation of calcium, magnesium, and zinc. This study identified different levels of transcripts in two physiologically different sago palms, and the formation and the development of the trunk are induced by these enzymes.

Effect of chicken manure and chemical fertilizer on the yield and qualities of white mugwort at dissimilar harvesting times 査読有り

One of the key components that affects soil productiveness, plant growth, and crop quality is fertilization. The effect of fertilizer, both organic and chemical, on the extremely acidic (pH 4.10) sandy loam soil chemical properties, yield, and quality of white mugwort grown were evaluated in this study. The field experiment arranged in a randomized complete block design, with four replications was conducted in Prachin Buri province, Thailand. There were six treatments, no fertilization (control), chemical fertilizer (25-7-7 + 46-0-0) applied at 187.50 (66.56 N:6.77 P2O5:6.77 K2O kg ha-1) kg ha-1 and applied at 375.00 (133.12 N:13.13 P2O5:13.13 K2O kg ha-1) kg ha-1, chicken manure applied at 3.36, 6.72, and 10.08 t ha-1. After harvesting, application of chicken manure tended to increase soil organic matter compared to the control, however, the application of chemical fertilizer did not show the same effect. The fresh weight of white mugwort increased with the rise in both fertilizer levels. Chicken manure application at 10.08 t ha-1 produced the highest fresh weight at all times. The level of accumulated nitrate was significantly greater when fertilizer rates increased. In addition, the total phenolic content of the white mugwort fertilized with chicken manure was higher than that fertilized with chemical fertilizer. However, there was no association between the DPPH radical scavenging capacity at harvesting times and different fertilization. Based on the results, chicken manure applied at 10.08 t ha-1 gave the best yield and higher total phenolic content of white mugwort, which was probably due to the improved soil organic matter.

Taro beetle damage has recently been reported on Gau Island, Fiji, causing economic loss for the taro business. This significantly reduced farmers’ incomes and the cultural value of taro. Swamp taro cultivation is expected to be a solution to taro beetle damage. Even though studies investigating the mitigation of taro beetle damage in paddy fields are not common, taro beetles do not have the ability to go beyond a certain depth in muddy condition. This study investigated suitable wetlands for taro cultivation by using the topographic wetness index (TWI). The calculation also considered protection forest zones and accessibility as analyzed by RapidEye satellite images, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and buffer function. Results showed that 26.03% of the island’s mass has potential for the development of paddy fields. Although the result was larger than predicted, there are differences between potential areas for each village. However, these areas were more than double size of the existing farmland of each village. Estimated yields corresponding to the potential areas were also presented in the study; these indicated that more than half of villages might be able to yield more than 0.50 t of taro production.

Context: The COVID-19 pandemic has been affecting health and economies across the world, although the nature of direct and indirect effects on Asian agrifood systems and food security has not yet been well understood. Objectives: This paper assesses the initial responses of major farming and food systems to COVID-19 in 25 Asian countries, and considers the implications for resilience, food and nutrition security and recovery policies by the governments. Methods: A conceptual systems model was specified including key pathways linking the direct and indirect effects of COVID-19 to the resilience and performance of the four principal Asian farming and food systems, viz, lowland rice based; irrigated wheat based; hill mixed; and dryland mixed systems. Based on this framework, a systematic survey of 2504 key informants (4% policy makers, 6% researchers or University staff, 6% extension workers, 65% farmers, and 19% others) in 20 Asian countries was conducted and the results assessed and analysed. Results and conclusion: The principal Asian farming and food systems were moderately resilient to COVID-19, reinforced by government policies in many countries that prioritized food availability and affordability. Rural livelihoods and food security were affected primarily because of disruptions to local labour markets (especially for off-farm work), farm produce markets (notably for perishable foods) and input supply chains (i.e., seeds and fertilisers). The overall effects on system performance were most severe in the irrigated wheat based system and least severe in the hill mixed system, associated in the latter case with greater resilience and diversification and less dependence on external inputs and long market chains. Farming and food systems' resilience and sustainability are critical considerations for recovery policies and programmes, especially in relation to economic performance that initially recovered more slowly than productivity, natural resources status and social capital. Overall, the resilience of Asian farming and food systems was strong because of inherent systems characteristics reinforced by public policies that prioritized staple food production and distribution as well as complementary welfare programmes. With the substantial risks to plant- and animal-sourced food supplies from future zoonoses and the institutional vulnerabilities revealed by COVID-19, efforts to improve resilience should be central to recovery programmes. Significance: This study was the first Asia-wide systems assessment of the effects of COVID-19 on agriculture and food systems, differentiating the effects of the pandemic across the four principal regional farming and food systems in the region.

Sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) photosynthetic performance was evaluated under drought conditions through leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence measurement. Drought has an impact on sago palm’s leaf gas exchange parameters and its chlorophyll fluorescence of PSII. Stomatal limitations were found to be the main factor limiting photosynthetic activities of sago palm under drought conditions. Photosynthetic rate decreased following the inhibition in the PSII reaction center. Early detection of interference upon the efficiency of the PSII reaction center due to drought stress was recorded by chlorophyll a fluorescence measurement.

Sago starch (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) is one of the starches imported into Japan. Recently, sago starch has been promoted as a healthy type of starch because it is gluten-free and non-allergenic. This study aims to identify the factors affecting sago starch import demand during the period 1978-2017 in Japan by using a double logarithmic linear function. The study revealed that the price of sago starch, GDP, aging population rate and tariff-rate quota policy are significant factors influencing sago starch importation in Japan.

The distribution channel is vital in the sago business because it connects producers and consumers. In this paper, we identify the distribution channels of sago products and their functional classification. We found that the distribution of sago products, such as dried sago and roasted sago (sagu kotak), in East Java is classified as indirect distribution, which relies on intermediaries. Intermediaries such as distributors, wholesale agents, and retailers are primarily actors that directly coordinate buying, selling, storing, and distributing sago products from Riau and Maluku to consumers in East Java. In addition, our calculation showed that sago pudding has a highly profitable value-added process as compared to that of roasted sago.

Iron toxicity affects the growth and yield of rice plant. Overcoming the damage of rice production by iron toxicity requires furthermore researches from laboratory to field levels. Here, we study responses of rice genotypes to iron toxicity between vegetative stage in hydroponic and whole grow stages in the pot. The first experiment was hydroponic experiment using twelve rice genotypes which were growth in the Yoshida Solution with addition of 0.2 % of agar. Three level of iron was given at 0, 500 and 700 ppm. The second experiment was the pot experiment using alluvial soil added with 3.000 ppm of ferrous combine with four levels of potassium and the control on Cilamaya Muncul (tolerant), Inpara 8 (moderate tolerant) and IR 64 (susceptible). In hydroponic experiment, even though the symptom appeared obviously, the leaf bronzing score (LBS) of tolerant and sensitive genotypes were not different. Physiological traits were significantly affected by Fe treatment in all varieties. Then symptom and physiological traits were significantly correlated. Through the pot experiment, it was confirmed the tolerance of each varieties. However, we couldn’t see the correlation between the LBS on hydroponic and soil at this time. And the heading delay was new finding, but it depended on varieties. We also could see the possibility of potassium application to inhibit iron toxicity but still we need to explore how it works. Rice is widely grown in rainfed lowlands during the wet season in the Mekong region. Limited nutrient availability is a common constraint on crop yield, and the optimal rate of fertilizer application depends on the soil type. The objective of our study was to evaluate rice productivity and the economic feasibility of various nutrient management regimes in Cambodia. We conducted field experiments on three soil types (Prey Khmer, Prateah Lang, and Toul Samroung, equivalent to Psamments, Plinthustalfs, and Endoaqualfs, respectively) in four provinces (Battambang, Kampong Thom, Pursat, and Siem Reap) during the 2016 and 2017 wet seasons to compare nine (2016) and seven (2017) N-P-K combinations. Grain yield ranged from 0.9 to 4.8 t ha-1 in 2016 and from 1.0 to 5.2 t ha-1 in 2017, depending on soil type and nutrient management. The Prey Khmer soil contained around 80% sand, and rice yield responded most weakly to nutrient management. The moderate fertilizer input in the current soil-specific recommendation was effective on this soil type. However, on more fertile soils with a higher clay content and a higher cation-exchange capacity (Toul Samroung and Prateah Lang), an additional 20 kg N ha-1 combined with adding 15 kg ha-1 of P2O5 or 20 kg ha-1 of K2O significantly increased yield and economic return. Although P and K use during Cambodia's wet season is uncommon, our results demonstrate the importance of these nutrients in improving the country's rice production.

The area of dry-season rice (Oryza sativa L.) has rapidly increased in Cambodia owing to the large-scale development of irrigation infrastructure. But little is known of potential productivity and adaptive crop management. The objective of our study was to evaluate potential yield and nutrient requirements of dry-season rice in Cambodia, and the economic feasibility of soil-specific management recommended by the government. Field experiments were conducted on four soil types (Bakan, equivalent to Alfisol; Krakor, Inceptisol; Prateah Lang, Plinthustalfs; and Toul Samroung, Endoaqualfs) in four provinces (Battambang, Kampong Thom, Pursat, and Siem Reap) during the 2016 and 2017 dry seasons to compare 14 (2016) and 8 (2017) N-P-K combinations. Grain yield ranged from 1.0 to 5.5 t ha-1 in 2016 and from 1.3 to 6.7 t ha-1 in 2017. Potential yield from the experiments was 6-7 t ha-1 on Toul Samroung soil, 5-6 t ha-1 on Bakan soil, and 3-5 t ha-1 on Prateah Lang and Krakor soils. A rate of 140-60-60 kg ha-1 of N-P2O5-K2O was more than enough to achieve the best yields on any soil group. On the other hand, modest application rates in soil-specific management (44-78 kg ha-1 of N, 23-28 kg ha-1 of P2O5, 0-30 kg ha-1 of K2O) proved reasonable for resource-poor farmers in Cambodia, since the treatment always provided >75 % of the highest economic profit in high-input plots.

Unique responses of three highly salt-tolerant wild Vigna species against salt stress 査読有り国際共著国際誌

The genus Vigna contains important crops such as cowpea and mungbean. Wild Vigna showing higher salt tolerance than Vigna crops were screened and their tolerance mechanisms are discussed. Primary screening using 7 Vigna crops and 23 wild Vigna under 300 mM NaCl selected V. luteola, V. marina and V. vexillata. A study under different salt concentrations revealed the highest survival ability of V. marina. Diversity of salt tolerance in each species was revealed using a total of 230 accessions. Growth and physiological responses under 150 mM NaCl were then compared using two selected accessions from each species. The pattern of Na+ accumulation in roots, stems and leaves suggested that V. vexillata (V1) and V. luteola (L8, L9) are ‘Na+ excluder’ type, while V. marina (M1, M4) is ‘Na+ includer’ type. V. luteola (L8, L9) showed the highest dry matter production under control condition and well-maintained shoot dry weight under salt stress. Interestingly, V. luteola (L9) accumulated the highest Na+ in roots (3000 μM g−1) and increased root dry weight under salt stress, which might work as Na+ reservoir restricting Na+ transition to the leaves, leading to the increased photosynthetic rate. V. luteola has great potential in areas where moderate salt damage occurs. V. marina (M1, M4) accumulated Na+ at high level in roots, stem, and leaves. Under salt stress, they increased stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and photosynthetic rate, which suggested the adaptational regulation of aquaporin gene expression. V. marina will be useful as food, pasture and phytoremediation legumes in highly salt-damaged areas.

Photosynthetic performance of sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) was evaluated in normal and waterlogged conditions. Net assimilation rate (AN), light response curve of net assimilation rate (AN/I) and pulse-amplitude modulation fluorescence vs. irradiance (PAM/I), leaf water potential, leaf chlorophyll content and leaflet area were measured. AN was higher in a particular period of waterlogging than in the normal condition. However, prolonged waterlogging (more than two months) negatively affected sago palm photosynthetic capacity. This was indicated by reduction in several photosynthetic parameters such as AN, maximum value of AN obtained at maximum irradiance (AN (Imax)), quantum yield at zero to 200 µmol m−2 s−1 irradiance (ϕ(Io_I200)), asymptotic photosynthetic efficiency (αo), and maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax). The plants experiencing waterlogging produced high qNmax and NPQmax values. Prolonged waterlogging period also caused significant reduction in leaf water potential (ψleaf) and photosynthetic pigments content. Normal soil conditions with a sufficient amount of water are preferable in order for the plant to generate higher photosynthetic capacity and facilitate stable sago production.

The response of sago palm under water deficiency conditions was determined. Results showed that plants which watered at 7 days interval gave low leaf water potential which resulted in low water content in the roots and plants. There was not affected on the growth of sago palm as determined by plant height, leaf number, green value of leaf (SPAD), chlorophyll concentration, leaf dry weight and dry weight of whole plant. The concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in leaves of plants treated with water deficiency treatment did not differed in comparison to the plants treated with the normal water supply treatments.

Photosynthetic activities of the sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottb.) were studied to find out its sensitivity to changes in ambient air temperature. The minimum ambient air temperature designed for the experiment was 25–29 °C, while the higher end was 29–33 °C. Several photosynthetic parameters were studied to support our analysis in sago photosynthetic activity, including diurnal leaf gas exchange, assimilation rate vs. CO2 concentration, leaf greenness, leaf chlorophyll content, and photosynthetic rate vs. irradiance. We found that sago palm photosynthetic activity tends to be more sensitive to minimum than to maximum ambient air temperature. The plants exposed to higher air temperatures had dark green leaf color associated with higher rates of diurnal photosynthesis, chlorophyll content, and rubisco limited photosynthetic activity. They also exhibited higher trend in optimum irradiance absorption level. Consequently, maximum light energy dissipation occurred at higher temperatures.

A rapid quantification method for leaf sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) concentrations was developed using a compact ion meter. Leaf ion concentrations were evaluated for species of Vigna vexillata (L.) A. Rich. after two weeks of treatment with 0-200 mM of sodium chloride. To compare the ion extraction efficiency, extraction solutions of distilled water and ammonium acetate were tested. The ion concentrations of extracts obtained by both solutions were measured using an ion meter, and the values were validated using ion chromatography. For both extraction solutions, the ion meter values were highly correlated with those of the ion chromatograph. However, correlations between ion meter and chromatograph values were largely different for Na+ and K+. The rapid quantification of ion concentrations using an ion meter developed in this study was successfully utilized for evaluating differences in leaf Na+ concentrations, K+ concentrations, and K+/Na+ ratio in species of V. vexillata.

コムギの多収栽培技術の開発を目的に，耐倒伏性品種「さとのそら」を供試し，慣行の基肥重点型の施肥体系に対して，基肥を減らし追肥で窒素を増施用する生育後期重点施肥の効果を2カ年にわたって検証した．その結果，生育後期重点施肥により，茎立期以降の乾物成長量の大きくなる時期にLAIが高まったこと，登熟期後半まで葉色，NARが高く維持されたことでCGRが高く経過し，成熟期の総乾物重が大きくなった．一方で，茎立期の茎数が少なくなったことに加えて，この時期に窒素を増肥したことで，茎間の同化産物および窒素の競合が緩和され，茎の生存率が高まり，穂数が増加するとともに，シンク容量の大きな穂が形成されて1穂粒数も増加したものと考えられた．さらに登熟期後半までNARが高く維持されたことで1000粒重も増加した．以上の乾物成長経過および収量構成要素の形成の結果，生育後期重点施肥により，収量を15～50％増加させることが可能であった．一方で，成熟期が遅れること，外観品質の低下や子実タンパクの過剰，土壌の酸性化の助長などの普及技術化に向けて改善すべき課題も明らかとなった．

Although Sago palm have been focused as bioenergy as well as foods, the production has decreased. In our previous study, we predicted the potential site of sago palm in Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The total area was 1282 km2. The model for prediction of sago palm showed the maximum temperature of the warmest month was the most important variable affecting sago palm potential distribution. Climate change is also an important global issue for crop production. In this study, we predicted the future distribution and harvesting of Sago palm affected by the climate change using the Maxent model and it was compared with the current prediction that was predicted in our previous study.
