This study aimed to empirically investigate which aspects of sound symbolic correspondences exhibit cross-linguistic differences by conducting experiments in multiple languages, and to build hypotheses and lay the groundwork for theoretical explanation based on two aspects: (1) differences rooted in the arbitrary systematicity of phonemic contrasts, and (2) differences based on the embodied iconicity of the phonetic properties of individual language sounds. During the research period, we empirically confirmed that certain linguistic sounds (phonetic features) tend to evoke properties such as shapes, hardness, and maliciousness. We also confirmed that some sound symbolic associations vary across languages. From this, we argued that some of the causes of cross-linguistic differences in sound symbolism lie in the morpho-phonological systematicity of language.

This study diverges from the traditional approach that seeks to define words based on grammatical and phonological characteristics. Instead, it explores how internal elements such as morphemes and pre-morphemic sound chains are integrated into words. The goal is to analyze word formation across different linguistic types: isolating, agglutinative, polysynthetic, and pseudo-polysynthetic, and thereby elucidate the essence of words.
The results of this four-year research project have been compiled in a collection of essays titled "The Essence of Words from a Typological Perspective," published in 2023 by Hituzi Syobo. The collection reveals that natural languages can be divided into polysyllabic and monosyllabic languages, with word formation in polysyllabic languages occurring at both the lexical and syntactic levels, whereas in monosyllabic languages, it occurs solely at the syntactic level.

Using experimental methods, we explored whether there are cross-linguistic differences in sound symbolism, which is a kind of perceptual phenomenon where linguistic sounds evoke certain images or meanings. Plosives in Japanese and English were tested for several images such as hardness and evilness. It was found that voiced plosives in these languages could evoke different sound symbolic images. English word-initial voiceless plosives evoked harder images than voiced plosives, while in Japanese the opposite association was observed. This means that sounds that are phonologically the same can result in different sound symbolic images, when phonetic properties of the sounds vary among different languages.

Uncovering the relation between form and meaning of words is important for understanding the nature and evolution of language. Form and meaning of words are associated not only by language-specific arbitrary conventions, but also by an intrinsic link, called sound symbolism, which reflects perceived resemblance between sound and properties of referents. Does one need to be able to hear sound to detect sound symbolism? Here, we show that one does not need to. Deaf-and-Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) participants, even those with profound hearing loss, could judge the sound symbolic match between shapes and words in the same way as hearing participants do, as long as DHH participants could move their tongue freely. This indicates that they detected sound symbolism via inherent resemblance between articulatory movements and shapes. This further suggests that linguistic symbols can emerge through iconic mapping between oral gesture and sensory experience of the world.

This study observed the multimodal properties of ideophones (a.k.a. giongo/gitaigo, mimetics, expressives) in audiovisual data, especially Japanese interviews. Qualitative and quantitative examinations revealed that ideophones are often accompanied by prominent intonation and voice quality, gesture, facial expression, and eye contact. These behavioral features are more frequent in adverbial ideophones (e.g., guruguru-to mawaru ‘to rotate whirlingly’) than in verbal ideophones (e.g., guruguru-suru ‘to whirl’). It is suggested that ideophones are an ambivalent medium of communication that is both linguistic and “prelinguistic” (like gesture and vocal mimicry).
