    Multiscale gyrokinetic turbulence simulations with the real ion-to-electron mass ratio and β value are realized for the first time. Numerical analysis at both the electron scale and the ion scale reveals the mechanism of their cross-scale interactions. Suppression of electron-scale turbulence by ion-scale eddies is demonstrated by means of nonlinear mode-to-mode coupling analysis. When the ion-scale modes are stabilized by finite-β effects, the contribution of the electron-scale dynamics to the turbulent transport becomes non-negligible, where damping of the ion-scale zonal flows by electron-scale turbulence is responsible for the enhancement of ion-scale transport.

    A novel time integration method of the drift kinetic equation is proposed, where low order fluid moment equations including the lowest order terms for the dispersive Alfven wave propagation are extracted from the electron drift kinetic equations. The moment extract method enables ones to implement an implicit solver for wave propagation by means of the operator splitting, while the kinetic part is solved explicitly. Numerical tests of the new scheme have verified stable and accurate time-integration of the drift kinetic equation and enabled to take a large time step size when the electron beta value is smaller than the electron-to-ion mass ratio.     Communication and computation overlapping techniques have been introduced in the five-dimensional gyrokinetic codes GYSELA and GKV. In order to anticipate some of the exa-scale requirements, these codes were ported to the modern accelerators, Xeon Phi KNL and Tesla P 100 GPU. On accelerators, a serial version of GYSELA on KNL and GKV on GPU are respectively 1.3x and 7.4x faster than those on a single Skylake processor (a single socket). For the scalability, we have measured GYSELA performance on Xeon Phi KNL from 16 to 512 KNLs (1024 to 32k cores) and GKV performance on Tesla P 100 GPU from 32 to 256 GPUs. In their parallel versions, transpose communication in semi-Lagrangian solver in GYSELA or Convolution kernel in GKV turned out to be a main bottleneck. This indicates that in the exa-scale, the network constraints would be critical. In order to mitigate the communication costs, the pipeline and task-based overlapping techniques have been implemented in these codes. The GYSELA 2D advection solver has achieved a 33% to 92% speed up, and the GKV 2D convolution kernel has achieved a factor of 2 speed up with pipelining. The task-based approach gives 11% to 82% performance gain in the derivative computation of the electrostatic potential in GYSELA. We have shown that the pipeline-based approach is applicable with the presence of symmetry, while the task-based approach can be applicable to more general situations.

    Multi-scale plasma turbulence including electron and ion temperature gradient (ETG/ITG) modes has been investigated by means of electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations. Triad transfer analyses on nonlinear mode coupling reveal cross-scale interactions between electron and ion scales. One of the interactions is suppression of electron-scale turbulence by ion-scale turbulence, where ITG-driven short-wavelength eddies act like shear flows and suppress ETG turbulence. Another cross-scale interaction is enhancement of ion-scale turbulence in the presence of electron-scale turbulence. This is caused via short-wavelength zonal flows, which are created by the response of passing kinetic electrons in ITG, suppress ITG by their shearing, and are damped by ETG turbulence. In both cases, sub-ion-scale structures between electron and ion scales play important roles in the cross-scale interactions.

    Self-organization in the slab electron temperature gradient driven (ETG) turbulence is investigated based on gyrokinetic simulations and the Hasegawa-Mima (HM) equation. The scale and the anisotropy of self-organized turbulent structures vary depending on the Rhines scale and the characteristic scale given by the adiabatic response term in the HM equation. The former is determined by competition between the linear wave dispersion and the nonlinear turbulent cascade, while the latter is given as the scale, at which the turbulent cascade is impeded. These scales are controlled by plasma parameters such as the density and temperature gradient, and the temperature ratio of ion to electron. It is found that depending on the plasma parameters, the ETG turbulence shows either isotropic turbulence or zonal flows, which give significantly different transport levels. Although the modulational instability excites zonal modes regardless of the plasma parameters, the final turbulent structure is determined by the self-organization process.     In magnetically confined plasma observed in space and fusion devices, density and temperature gradients drive micro-instabilities and turbulence governed by electromagnetic fluctuations. This research studies physical mechanisms of multi-scale interactions between large ion-scale and small electron-scale turbulence by means of theory and numerical simulations. We clarified the generation of short-wavelength localized structures by kinetic electron effects in ion-scale instabilities, which effectively interact with the extremely short-wavelength electron-scale instabilities. It is revealed that the mechanism is valid even in ion-scale instabilities having different parity. The results suggest the commonality and generic features of multi-scale interactions.

    本課題の研究目的は、高温磁化プラズマ中に普遍的に観測される電磁乱流揺らぎが、どのような経路を経て非可逆な散逸に至るか、その道程を明らかにし、位相空間上の散逸領域と慣性領域を理論的・数値的に特徴付けること、そこからエネルギー散逸の非等方性を明らかにすることである。さらに、その結果を敷衍し、乱流抑制や輸送の飽和機構の理解へと還元することを目指している。
    平成28年度には、実空間2次元・速度空間1次元の駆動型ジャイロ運動論的シミュレーションを実現し、分布関数揺らぎがエントロピー・カスケードとして微視的スケールに伝達される過程を調べた。その結果、従来よりも強い非等方性をもつ位相空間スペクトル構造が得られた。平成29年度は、5次元ジャイロ運動論的シミュレーション・コードGKVを用いて、トーラス型の磁場閉じ込め核融合プラズマにおける乱流輸送シミュレーションを様々なイオン温度勾配に対して系統的に実施した。これによりエントロピー伝達率をとゾーナル流によるせん断効果の関係を明らかにしてきた。
    3年目となる平成30年度には、上記の結果をまとめて成果発表を行うとともに、Alfven乱流の高解像度簡約化磁気流体シミュレーションならびに電子温度勾配乱流のジャイロ運動論的シミュレーションを進めた。特に前者においては、-5/3乗のベキ指数を満たす乱流スペクトルが、自己駆動型不安定性をもとに自発的に形成される様子を明らかにするとともに、電子慣性効果を含めたモデルを用いた解析も進展した。
    今後、スラブおよびトロイダル配位におけるイオン温度勾配および電子温度勾配乱流を中心にエントロピー揺動の非等方伝達過程の解析を重点的に進める予定である。
    上記の概要にまとめたように、ジャイロ運動論に基づいた駆動型ドリフト波乱流、スラブ配位およびトーラス配位におけるイオン温度勾配乱流、電子温度勾配乱流、さらに簡約化磁気流体モデルを用いたアルヴェン乱流、と研究対象を広げつつ乱流のスペクトル構造とエントロピー伝達について研究を進めてきた。それぞれの成果について成果発表も進めており、研究課題については概ね順調に進展している。
    今後の研究推進方策として、スラブおよびトロイダル配位におけるイオン温度勾配および電子温度勾配乱流を中心に、エントロピー伝達の波数空間非等方性について重点的に研究を進める予定である。特に、イオン温度勾配乱流においては、ランダウ減衰に関わる磁場平行方向の混合過程と有限ジャイロ半径効果が関わる垂直方向の混合過程の分離に焦点を当てた解析を進めたい。そのためには計算資源の集中的な投資が必要となるが、センターなどにおける共同利用課題を有効に活用して研究を進める予定である。さらに、これまでの成果の論文出版についても継続的に進める。

    In magnetically confined plasma observed in space and fusion devices, density and temperature gradients drive instabilities and associated turbulence. This research clarifies the existence of cross-scale interactions between long-wave-length turbulence due to the dynamics of heavy ions and extremely short-wave-length turbulence due to the dynamics of light electrons. Such a multi-scale turbulence involving different two injection scales has been investigated by means of numerical simulations. We revealed that the mechanism of cross-scale interactions via sub-ion-scale structure, namely intermediate scale between electron and ion scales, which is generated by turbulent mixing or kinetic response of electrons.
