    Abstract: The power spectrum of concentration fluctuation of high Schmidt number dye (Sc ≃ 2.9 × 10 3) was measured in a liquid-phase axisymmetric turbulent jet at the jet Reynolds number of 2.0 × 10 4. We used the optical fiber LIF probe which has a spatial resolution of 2.8 μm and a working distance of 140 μm. It is confirmed that the probe can achieve high signal-to-noise ratio by using high concentration dye, which enabled us to examine the spectral shape almost up to the Batchelor scale for the present experimental condition. The measured power spectrum captures the transition from the inertial–convective range to the viscous–convective range at around kηK= 0.03 (ηK: Kolmogorov scale). The k- 1 scaling law for the power spectrum almost holds in the viscous–convective range. However, the spectrum does not perfectly follow the k- 1 scaling but has a small bump in the range. It is also shown that the small-scale concentration fluctuation largely contributes to the r.m.s value of concentration fluctuation. Graphic abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.].

    This study investigated the effect of large-scale structures including large-scale motions (LSMs) and hairpin vortex in the log-region on the bursting phenomenon in the buffer layer using the simultaneous measurement of the streamwise velocity fluctuation in the log-region and buffer layer of the turbulent boundary layer (TBL) with a multi-channel hot-wire probe. The Reynolds number in the present study, calculated from the friction velocity uτ, was Reτ=δuτ/ν=1260, where δ is the boundary layer thickness and ν is the kinematic viscosity. The LSMs were classified as positive large-scale motions (pLSMs) and negative large-scale motions (nLSMs) based on their streamwise velocities. Their effect on the bursting that was detected by the Variable-Interval Time-Averaging (VITA) technique was visualized. As a result, it was evident that the bursting became active with the existence of the pLSMs, while it was suppressed with the nLSMs. In addition, hairpin vortex was observed by applying the VITA technique to the velocity fluctuation of the log-region. Further investigation revealed that the hairpin vortex can also be observed in the log-region with the condition that the bursting was detected in the buffer layer, suggesting that the existence of a hairpin vortex in the log-region slightly increased the bursting phenomenon near the wall.

    <p>A direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a planar jet with a second-order chemical reaction is performed using four different Schmidt number (<i>Sc</i> = 1, 2, 4, 8). Reactant A is contained in the jet flow and reactant B is contained in the ambient flow. The chemical reaction ( A + B → P ) proceeds by molecular mixing of the two reactants in the jet. The results show that the higher <i>Sc</i> becomes, the finer the structure of the product concentration becomes. The region where the reaction occurs changes depending on the <i>Sc</i>. Mean concentration and mean production rate conditioned on the distance from the T/NT (Turbulent/Non-Turbulent) interface is calculeted. The change in the conditional mean concentration of the reactive species near the T/NT interface occurs within the order of Taylor's microscale regardless of the difference in <i>Sc</i>. In the chemical reaction field, the slope of the concentration change at T/NT does not differ much depending on the <i>Sc</i>. When the <i>Sc</i> is high, the mean production rate decreases. This is because the molecular diffusion is weak and small-scale concentration fluctuation occurs at high Sc. It also found that the thickness of the reaction layer becomes thinner as the <i>Sc</i> increases and the thickness of the reaction layer is scaled on the Bachelor scale <i>η</i><sub>B</sub>.</p>

    <p>A plasma actuator is applied to generate an artificial Super Structure in the turbulent boundary layer. The large scale streamwise vortical motion is produced by the two planar jets collision which is driven by actuators. The multi-point streamwise velocities in the logarithmic region are measured by using a Rake with a span-wise array of 9 channel I-type hot wire. It is found that the mean velocity with plasma actuator is slower than without plasma actuator. The mean velocity decreases as the applied voltage of actuator becomes larger. It may be an effect by the vertical flow induced by the actuators, i.e., the low-speed fluid is brought up from the near-wall region. This result shows that there is a possibility that an artificial Super Structure is successfully generated in the turbulent boundary layer.</p>

    <p>In this study, the effect of the shear layer existing between large-scale motions (LSMs) on bursting phenomenon in turbulent boundary layer (TBL) was investigated by wind tunnel experiment. The TBL was generated on the flat plate made of Bakelite with a zero pressure gradient. The Reynolds number based on friction velocity given by <i>Re<sub>τ</sub></i> = u<sub>τ</sub><i>δ</i>/<i>ν</i> is about 1260. A self-made multi-point hot-wire probe consisting of a hot-wire Rake and a single I-type hot-wire probe was adopted. The hot-wire Rake was used to extract the LSMs from the fluctuation velocity distribution in the log-region in TBL. And the shear layer was considered to exist between the positive large-scale motion (pLSM) and the negative large-scale motion (nLSM). The bursting phenomenon was detected by VITA technique from the fluctuation velocity measured by the single I-type hot-wire probe installed under the center of the Rake in the buffer layer in the TBL. To evaluate the effect of the shear layer on bursting phenomenon, the bursting frequency under several different conditions was calculated. It was found that the bursting frequency has increased 20% with the existence of the shear layer. A further investigation showed that these increased bursting phenomena were related to the leg of the hairpin vortex.</p>

    <p>Chemical reaction near turbulent/non-turbulent (T/NT) interface in liquid phase turbulent flow was investigated experimentally. The concentrations of reactive species near the T/NT interface in a planar liquid jet with a second-order chemical reaction A+B → R was measured with different stoichiometric mixture ratios. The reactants A and B were premixed into the jet and ambient flows, respectively. The optical fiber probe based on the light absorption spectrometry was used to measure the instantaneous concentrations of the reactive species. The T/NT interfaces were separated into two types (i.e. leading edge and trailing edge) and investigated separately. Mean concentration conditioned on the distance from the T/NT interface was calculated. It was found that the thickness where large concentration change of the reactive species occurs are order of Taylor's microscale and does not depend on stoichiometric mixture ratio. In addition concentration profile of product R near the T/NT interface does not depend on stoichiometric mixture ratio, while equilibrium limit clearly depend on stoichiometric mixture ratio. This means that near the T/NT scalar mixing does not reach molecular level and chemical reaction is not active.</p>

    <p>  Optical fiber laser induced fluorescence (OFLIF) probe was developed for high spatial resolution and high SN ratio measurement of concentration fluctuation in liquid phase turbulent flows. The advantage of the OFLIF method is the very small path length of incident laser. The calibration curve showed high linearity up to about 30 μmol/L for Rhodamine 6G solution which is about 1,000 times higher than the maximum concentration for conventional LIF method. This enables us to use the fluorescence dye with much higher concentration than conventional LIF method. The OFLIF was applied to concentration measurement in an aqueous axisymmetric turbulent jet. The result showed that the spatial resolution and SN ratio are enough to discuss the spectral shape near Bachelor scale. The measured spectra supported -1 power law predicted by Bachelor and Kraichnan.</p>

    <p>We have run a Direct Numerical Simulation of a spatially developing shear mixing layer. The aim of this study is to clarify the influence of the large-scale structure on the turbulent Prandtl number <i>Pr<sub>T</sub></i>. As a main conclusion, <i>Pr<sub>T</sub></i> takes a small value (<i>Pr<sub>T</sub></i> ~ 0.5) in the dominant region of the large-scale structure. The budget analyses for the Reynolds stress equation and the scalar flux equation revealed that the differences between the momentum and scalar transfer are caused by terms related to pressure (i.e., pressure-strain correlation term, pressure-scalar gradient correlation term, and pressure diffusion terms). Phenomenally, the momentum in the field where a large-scale vortex coexists tends to be transported toward the counter-gradient direction under the influence of pressure, but the scalar is transported toward the gradient direction. As a result, it is thought that the difference in the driving force between the momentum and scalar transport causes the decrease of the <i>Pr<sub>T</sub></i>. </p>

    <p>  Cross wavelet analysis was used to analyze instantaneous Reynolds stress production and destruction in turbulent planar jet at Reynolds number based on jet exit velocity and exit width of 10,000. Instantaneous value of pressure and velocity gradient correlation obtained by a probe which consists of an X-type hot-wire and a miniature static pressure tube was analyzed by cross wavelet. This analysis enabled us to capture the structure of Reynolds stress production and destruction without losing the local time and scale information. The result showed that the production and destruction of Reynolds stress occur around the large scale vortex. </p>

    <p>In this study, the relationship between the Large-scale structures and bursting phenomenon was investigated by the simultaneous measurement of streamwise velocity in the logarithmic region and the buffer region in a turbulent boundary layer using multi-channels hot-wire probes. Superstructures (SSs) were detected in the logarithmic region whereas bursting phenomenon was detected in buffer region. Furthermore, the superstructures were divided into the high speed Superstructure (pSS) and the low speed Superstructure (nSS), respectively, and both of their impacts on the bursting phenomenon were investigated. As a result, it was found that the presence of SSs has an effect on the amplitude of the bursting waveform. In addition, the packet of large scale hairpin vortices straddling the SS was observed, suggesting that the detected bursting phenomenon includes those generated with large scale hairpin vortex. A further investigation shows that different sizes of hairpin vortices could be identified when the bursting phenomenon occurring.</p>

    本研究では,ヴォルテクスジェネレータの設置や旋回の利用を提案した噴流制御法の開発を目的とする.いずれの場合にも鍵となる要素の一つは縦渦であるが,初期条件・境界条件により流れの形態が簡単に遷移するため,それらの流動構造や制御法の有効性は限られた条件下でしか解明されていない.そこでPODやDMDにより流動構造を低次元化・要素化し,機械学習を利用することにより,上記の噴流現象の理解および付加エネルギを必要としないパッシブな噴流制御法の最適化指針の確立を目指す.室内実験および数値シミュレーションを併用することで,信頼性を確保したうえで様々な条件下の流れを効率よく再現する.

    本研究では風洞実験により大規模構造の発生・維持機構を解明し,新規の抵抗低減手法の指針を見つけることを目指す.本年度は,主に乱流境界層内に人工的に大規模構造を生成するためのプラズマアクチュエータデバイスの制作に取り組んだ.本研究で制作したデバイスは,2つのプラズマアクチュエータを対向させることで,アクチュエータ間に渦を生成する機構となっている.さらに,このユニットを一列に複数並べることにより,複数の渦を同時に生成することができる. 実際に,PIVを用いて速度場の面情報を取得することにより,縦渦がプラズマアクチュエータの間に生成されることが確認された.また,このデバイスは厚みが0.3mm程度と非常に薄いため,乱流境界層が生成される風洞の壁面に直接に設置することができ,大規模構造の直接的な制御が可能である.一方,10点で同時に主流方向瞬時流速を測定可能な櫛形の熱線流速計プローブを用いた実験により,乱流境界層中に自然発生する大規模構造が壁面近傍のバースト現象に及ぼす影響の調査も進めた.その結果,壁面近傍においてバースト現象として検出される乱れの一部は,大規模構造と同程度のスケールを持つヘアピン渦に起因するものであることが明らかとなった.また,ヘアピン渦はそれらが複数集まったパケット構造を作り出すことも明らかとなった.さらに,バースト現象は高速の大規模構造の下流側に連続して発生する確率が高いことも明らかとなった.
    当初の計画通りに研究を遂行し,平板乱流境界層中の大規模構造を制御可能なプラズマアクチュエータデバイスの開発に成功したことに加えて,乱流境界層中に自然発生する大規模構造と壁面近傍のバースト現象との関係に関する新たな知見も蓄積されたため.
    大規模構造が小規模渦構造のクラスタリングにどのように影響を与えるかを理解するために,自作したプラズマアクチュエータデバイスを乱流境界層内に設置し,人工的な大規模構造を導入する風洞実験を行う.人工的に導入した大規模構造が小規模渦クラスタリングに及ぼす影響は多点速度計測により調査する.さらに,X型熱線プローブによりレイノルズ応力を測定することにより,小規模渦のクラスタリングが壁面摩擦に及ぼす影響も調査し,壁面摩擦低減に効果的な大規模渦構造の制御手法の指針を提案する.

    A grid tank in which turbulence is generated by a grid and steady flow (i.e., acoustic streaming) when Megahertz (0.95 MHz) ultrasound is irradiated into a quiescent water is newly designed and manufactured. The characteristics of created turbulent flows are measured by using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The mesh length of the grid is M=20 mm and the thickness of the square bar is 4 mm, so that its solidity is 36%. In order to further elucidate the characteristics of the turbulent field, a numerical code for direct numerical simulation of temporally developing grid turbulence is newly developed based on the finite difference method. The calculations are conducted on a supercomputer for the mesh Reynolds numbers of 10,000 and 20,000. The characteristics of the turbulent flow are investigated by above-mentioned experiments and calculations.

    In this study, a new type of optical fiber probe was developed to measure small scale fluctuation of multiple diffusive matters simultaneously in turbulent liquid flows. The size of measurement volume of the probe is 100 μm or less, which is the highest spatial resolution as an absorption type concentration measurement device in the world. Concentration fluctuations of the high Schmidt number diffusing dyes were measured in a liquid axisymmetric jet with the new probe. As a result, in the smaller range than the Kolmogorov micro-scale (i.e., in the viscous-convective subrange), we could observe the trending that the power exponent of the concentration fluctuation spectrum with respect to the wave number approaches -1.
