In this study, we have fabricated epitaxial thin films of the high-Tc iron-based superconductor NdFeAs(O,H), in which the oxygen site is partially replaced by hydrogen, and evaluated the physical properties of NdFeAs(O,H). As a result, NdFeAs(O,H) has higher superconducting properties (e.g. critical current density Jc, irreversibility field and low anisotropy), than NdFeAs(O,F). However, the decay of Jc with external magnetic fields was large, hence it is necessary to improve the in-field Jc. Although the inter-grain Jc has already begun to decay at a grain boundary angle of 6 degree, the absolute value was 6.2 MA/cm2, which is more than one order of magnitude higher than that in iron-based superconductors. Therefore, NdFeAs(O,H) is a suitable material for application among iron-based superconductors.

We studied thin film growth of BaZn2As2, the mother compound of novel dilute magnetic semiconductors that are drawing considerable attention in recent years. The thin film growth of this compound had been possible only by a complex, five-step process until the start of the present study, while we have established a simple one-step growth method by means of molecular beam epitaxy. Thin films in which Fe was partially substituted for Zn were also grown. Transport measurements revealed that the partially Fe substituted films are n-type semiconductors, and the energy gap decreased with Fe content. The magnetization measurements showed that the Fe substituted films exhibit ferromagnetic behavior. Single crystals of compounds in which As was replaced by Sb or P were also grown, and the physical properties were studied. In particular, we observed a ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature for the Sb-based compound.

Some of functional materials contain light elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, fluorine. It is often found difficulty in the control of the amount of light elements in these material system.
In this research, we aim to control the amount of light elements in materials by using a strong electric field generated in electric double layer transistors . We succeeded to induce the resistance changes by applying gate voltages, which seems to be attributable to changes of the amount of light elements in some materials, such as nitride thin films and iron based superconductors containing fluorine.
