    In-situ observations of the alloying process of Li and Au on lithium oxynitride glass (LiPON) electrolytes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that Li partly re-dissolved in Au after the Li nucleation. Moreover, in-situ SEM observations revealed that no Li was grown from Ta-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZT) surfaces polished with SiC papers. It was also found that immersing a LLZT pellet in an acid aqueous solution for a short period of time removed the damaged layer on the surface that resulted from SiC polishing. The acid-etched-LLZT surface showed high wettability with molten Li, and acid-etched LLZT showed Li plating/stripping cycles with high stability.

    Calibration lines for the surface potential measurements using amplitude-modulated-atomic-force microscopy (AM-AFM) are made in the first step of this study. An Au-coated-AFM probe oscillating at the resonance frequency is approached toward flat Pt surface. Variations in amplitude and phase of the oscillations are measured to analyze interaction force profiles under bias voltage between probe and Pt sample. The measurement results exhibit expected trends supporting the theory, and the calibration lines show correlation coefficients larger than 0.95. Subsequently, thin Al2O3 and LiPON films are deposited on interdigitated-Pt electrodes to measure surface potential distributions between the electrodes. Eventually, the surface potential linearly changes on the Al2O3 surface. On the other hand, the potential rapidly changes near the electrode on LiPON surface. It is considered that the space charge layer causes non-linear variation in surface potential near the Pt electrodes.

    Complex dielectric constant of ionic conductive materials have concerned with the ionic conductivities. We developed a measurement system to estimate local dielectric constant of glass electrolyte by using amplitude modulation type atomic force microscopy (AM-AFM). Thin films of lithium phosphorus oxynitride glass electrolyte (LiPON) were prepared on highly oriented pyro graphite substrate and measure the dielectric constant. The measured value, ca. 20, was in good agreement with the reported valuw (16-20), indicating that our measurement system works well. Then, we evaluated the voltage dependency of dielectric constant around the BaTiO3-LiPON interface. The AM-AFM observations suggested a formation of a region around the interface, where higher dielectric constant was observed against the value measured in the bulk.
