    A novel sum-peak method was developed to measure samples containing multiple radionuclides. The conventional sum-peak method is one of the absolute radioactivity measurement methods for radionuclides emitting more than one photon in coincidence. The method requires the knowledge of the total count rate as well as the peak count rates and the sum peak count rate. If there are other radionuclides in a sample, it is fraught with difficulty to estimate the total count rate of the nuclide of interest. To solve the problem, a novel calculation method solely using the peak count rates and the sum peak count rate was developed by modifying the conventional sum-peak method. The new method was theoretically verified and experimentally investigated using 60Co and 22Na, and was successfully confirmed. It was proved that the modified sum-peak method is effective to measure samples with multiple radionuclides and is quite simple and practical.

    <p>Simultaneous measurement with a positron emission tomograph (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an emerging field for molecular imaging research. By combining the advantages of a PET, with its ability to image the metabolic activity with high sensitivity, and an MRI's high resolution anatomical images with a large variety of tissue contrasts, new information from molecular imaging can be provided. In this report, we show the trends in PET/MRI system development. Also we briefly show some of the data from our PET/MRI systems, which we developed for small animals.</p>

    The sum-peak method is a kind of absolute measurement methods of radioactivity, which is applied to determining an activity of a radionuclide emitting two or more photons in coincidence.     A novel sum-peak method was developed by modifying the conventional sum-peak method. The sum-peak method is one of the absolute measurement methods for the radionuclides emitting more than one photon in coincidence. Since the method requires the knowledge of total count rate as well as the peak count rates and the sum peak count rate, it is fraught with difficulty to be applied to samples containing multiple radionuclides. However, since the modified sum-peak method requires solely the peak count rates and the sum peak count rate, it can be applicable to determine the activities of samples with multiple radionuclides. The novel method was theoretically verified and experimentally investigated using 60Co and 22Na, and was successfully confirmed. Although the accuracy is limited, it was proved that the modified sum-peak method is effective to measure samples with multiple radionuclides and is quite simple and practical.

    福島原発事故後、食品の放射能モニタリングが社会的問題となっている。しかし、食品モニタは高価でまた大きく重い。安価で小型のものが切望されている。本研究では、放射性セシウムから放出される30-40keVのX線に着目し、小型の食品モニタの製作可能性を検討した。検出器として1 mm厚のGAGGプレートを用いた。5枚のプレートで井戸型検出器を作製した。実験の結果、試料容量10mLで、100 Bq/kgの測定が可能であることが分かった。

    After the nuclear power plant accident in Fukushima, radiocesium contamination in foods has been a serious concern. However, low background and high efficiency radiocesium detectors are expensive and huge such as semiconductor germanium detector. To solve this problem, we developed radiocesium detector employing PET technology. Because 134Cs emits two gamma photons (795 keV and 605 keV) within 5 ps, these two photons can selectively measured by the use of coincidence. Major environmental gamma photons such as 40K (1.46 MeV) are single photon emitter, the measurements of coincidence will reduce the detection limit of radiocesium detector. Eight sets of BGO scintillation detector were arranged in double rings (four for 1-ring), coincidence was measured between these detectors using the PET data acquisition system. The BGO size was 50 mm x 50 mm x 30 mm and was optically coupled to a 2-inch square photomultiplier tube (PMT). By measuring the coincidence, single gamma photons was almost eliminated from the energy distribution and only those from 134Cs can be detected. The efficiency was 18% at the central part and 6% at the edge of the system. In the measurements of sampled low level radiocesium mixture solution of 137Cs (9.2Bq) and 134Cs (7.3Bq), the coincidence counts for 100 s acquisition were 135 with background counts of 143. The detection limit with 250 cm3 subject can be calculated to be ~16 Bq/kg, smaller than the requirements for the food monitor (25 Bq/kg) in Japan. These results show the developed radiocesium detector based on PET technology is promising for detection of low level radiocesium.

    After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, radiocesium (137Cs and 134Cs) contamination in foods has been a serious social concern. However, high efficiency instruments which can measure the low level radioactivity are quite expensive and heavy. A compact and reliable radiation detector which can monitor low level radiocesium with inexpensive, lightweight is highly desired. We developed a compact and high efficiency radiocesium detector to detect ~35 keV x-rays from radiocesiums, instead of high energy gamma rays. A GAGG scintillator with 1 mm thickness was selected for effective detection of the ~35 keV x-rays from 137Cs and minimizing circumstance radiation. Four sets of 25 mm 25 mm 1 mm GAGG plates, each of which was optically coupled to triangular shaped light guide, were optically coupled to a photomultiplier tube (PMT) to form a square shaped well counter. One other GAGG plate was directly optically coupled to the PMT to form the bottom detector of the well counter. The energy resolution of the GAGG well counter was 22.3% FWHM for 122 keV gamma rays and 32% FWHM for ~35 keV x-rays. The counting efficiency for x-rays from radiocesium (mixture of 137Cs and 134Cs) were 3.3%. In the measurements of low level radiocesium mixture, photo-peak of ~35 keV x-rays can clearly be distinguished from background. The minimum detectable activity (MDA) was estimated as 0.55 Bq for 20,000 s measurement. The results show the developed GAGG well counter is promising for detection of radiocesium in foods.

    After the Fukushima disaster, radiocesium contamination has been a serious social concern. In the plant studies on radiocesiums, it is desired that the distribution is imaged without contacting to the subjects. Cerenkov light imaging of positron radionuclide has inherently high resolution and is promising for molecular imaging. Since 137Cs and 134Cs emit beta particles, Cerenkov light imaging will also be useful for the imaging of the radiocesium distribution. Therefore, we tested the Cerenkov light imaging for radiocesium solution to realize high resolution without contact to the subjects. We used high sensitivity CCD camera (Hamamatsu Photonics, ORCA2-ER) for imaging the Cerenkov light. An f=0.95 lens (Xenon 0.95/25) was mounted with the camera and installed in a black box. Approximately 1 cm3 solutions of 134Cs (β max energy: 0.66 MeV: 70%) and 137Cs (1.2 MeV: 5%, 0.5 MeV: 95%) (100 kBq each) were imaged with the CCD camera. With 2 min acquisition, the distribution of the 134Cs and 137Cs solutions started to be visualized and high resolution images could be obtained with 20-30min acquisitions. With these results, we conclude that Cerenkov light imaging is promising for high resolution imaging the distribution of 134Cs and 137Cs.

    After the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, large areas of agricultural fields were contaminated with radiocesium. As a result, high-resolution images of radiocesium distribution are required in order to facilitate the study of cesium kinetics in plants. Through Cherenkov light imaging, we can visualize fine distributions of radionuclides that emit beta particles by using an optical camera We have used this method to develop an imaging system that allows us to study radiocesium movement in live plants. To demonstrate the use of this system for radiocesium detection in plants, an imaging experiment was performed with a live soybean plant. The images of Cs-137 distribution in the soybean plant indicate that Cs-137 was transported into the shoot and accumulated at the node. The results of the experiments described above lead us to conclude that Cherenkov light imaging may be a promising method for studying the kinetics of radioisotopes in live plants.

    Positron emission tomography (PET) is a useful imaging modality that quantifies the distributions of radiolabeled tracer. However, this technique is unsuitable for multiple-probe imaging. There for, we developed a new PET system, which is useful for multiple-probe imaging, based on a new principle. To test the practical performance of the developed system, we carried out a small animal imaging. In this experiment, Na-22 and F-18-FDG were administered to a normal mouse and a 30-min scan was performed. We successfully reconstructed the reasonable images for dual-probe distributions. We also performed dual-probe mouse imaging using F-18-FDG and Sc-44, which is suitable for the clinical use, and successfully reconstructed the images for dual probes. These works contribute a future development of the multiple-probe PET system.

    Positron emission tomography (PET) has high sensitivity for imaging radioactive tracer distributions in subjects. However, it is not possible to image free radical distribution in subject by PET. Since free radicals are quite reactive, they are related to many diseases, including but not limited to cancer, inflammation, strokes, and heart disease. The Overhauser enhanced MRI (OMRI) is so far the only method that images free radical distribution in vivo. By combining PET and OMRI, a new hybrid imaging modality might be developed that can simultaneously image the radioactive tracer and free radical distributions. For this purpose, we developed a PET/OMRI combined system for small animals. Also we tried more sensitive imaging of radical using optical methods.
