Delamination detection is crucial for assessing the continuous availability of exterior wall tiles in buildings after a disaster. As Japan is vulnerable to earthquakes, a rapid and accurate assessment can reduce the risk from the subsequent spalling of tiles. In this study, a novel investigation is presented about six general non-destructive detection methods that are applied to a large-scale wall specimen, including percussion inspection, infrared thermography, acceleration measurements, joint opening displacement measurements, strain monitoring, and 3D coordinate measurements. Moreover, the ability of these methods to detect delamination is compared, as is the feasibility of their application to post-disaster assessments in a timely manner. The detection effectiveness of these methods is also demonstrated, with the exception of acceleration measurements, which are limited by the accuracy of the sensors used. A comparative analysis of the advantages and limitations of these methods for timely post-disaster assessments is presented. Overall, the strain-tracking method using fiber Bragg grating sensors offers the highest detection accuracy, provided that the sensors are installed at the time of construction. However, infrared thermography is more universally applicable and can provide an initial wide range of diagnostic results.

Due to the preliminary information on the devastating damage in the affected area due to the 2023 Türkiye-Syria Earthquakes, AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan) JSCE (Japan Society of Civil Engineering), JGS (Japan Geotechnical Society), and Grantsin- Aid for Scientific Research team decided to organize a joint reconnaissance team. The team consisted of 27 members from Japan and 22 members from Türkiye. It was the largest international investigation team for AIJ. The target items to be investigated were Reinforced concrete (R/C), Steel, Wall-type, Masonry, Hospital, Base-isolated structures, Geotechnical issues, Strong motion characteristics, and code systems. The building damage around the strong motion observation stations was investigated to confirm if the building damage coincided with the level of measured accelerations. The widespread damages and collapses to R/C buildings showed that the structures did not have sufficient displacement capacity due to insufficient amount and detailing of transverse reinforcement. Also, the spacing between longitudinal rebars at the lap splice joints is insufficient and does not allow the proper concrete placement for achieving a sufficient bond between concrete and reinforcement. Many buildings were inclined due to uneven settlement in Gölbaşı (mostly due to liquefaction), where the soil condition was poor. The pile foundation is recommended for buildings on soft soil. A detailed investigation was also conducted to collect the dimensions of members, span lengths and heights, and material properties so that the buildings can be modeled on a computer. The code compliance system in the affected area and recovery plan were also investigated. As the conclusions, the findings and lessons from this earthquake damage were summarized. The effects of sequences of strong seismic activities as experienced during the 2023 Türkiye-Syria Earthquakes should also be further investigated.

This study aimed to develop a numerical method to evaluate thermal cracking, in terms of parameters such as thermal crack width and crack spacing, on massive reinforced concrete (RC) wall structures externally restrained by a base structure. The existing experimental study was investigated using the rigid body–spring model (RBSM) with new constitutive laws developed for this objective. Thermal cracks, which localized and propagated throughout the wall thickness, were successfully reproduced, and the good agreement with the experiment indicated the capability of the proposed numerical method. The time-dependent cracking behavior and the impacts of factors affecting thermal cracking, which are difficult to investigate experimentally, are discussed.

Shake-table tests of a 3-story reinforced concrete building with cladding casted to be monolithic with frame elements, with seismic slits or cut reinforcing bars present in some cladding elements to ensure a desirable deformation mechanism, was performed at E-Defense to evaluate its post-disaster functionality. The building satisfied response objectives; behaving elastically with 0.33% drift or less during a “severe earthquake motion” defined in the Japanese Building Standard Law, and has a base shear capacity coefficient greater than 0.55. However, the damage was greater than expected due to deformations concentrating on a few cracks, resulting in continuous functionality not necessarily being achieved.

Evaluating the performance of reinforced concrete (RC) structures during earthquakes and the resultant damage in the structures depends on an accurate load-displacement relationship. Several experimental and analytical evaluation methods for load-displacement relationships have been proposed and specified in current design standards. However, there have been few quantitative studies on the impact of drying on the yielding behavior of RC members, including evaluations of the effective stiffness of members. In this study, to investigate changes in the mechanical properties of RC beam-slab members due to drying of the concrete, cyclic loading tests are conducted on two RC beam-slab members with and without drying. It is found that the lateral structural stiffness of the specimen with drying decreased to 77% that of the specimen without drying. This is verified in the calculation of the flexural stiffness. In this calculation, it is assumed that drying shrinkage decreases the moment of inertia of the slab in tension but not in compression. Meanwhile, no difference is observed in the flexural capacity and yield displacement between the two specimens. Thus, there is no significant impact from drying shrinkage in RC beam-slab members on the lateral structural performance, while the shrinkage instead induces greater flexural cracking, which reduces the residual stresses in the specimen with drift leading to a gradual decrease in the impact of drying.

Aiming to increasing of workability and productivity of construction of high-rise reinforced concrete buildings, cut-off longitudinal bars in the second layer has been used. However, it is known that flexural cracks tend to open at termination point, and it leads to develop diagonal tension cracks. In addition, high-strength materials have been used for longitudinal and transverse reinforcements. In this study, to assess failure behavior, seismic performance of reinforced concrete beams having cut-off longitudinal bars with high-strength concrete and steels, test of beams which reinforcement ratio are 0.3−1.2% were carried out. Additional stirrups were installed to prevent crack around the head of the cut-off longitudinal bars.
For the test, four-teen 1/2.5-scaled test specimens of reinforced concrete beams were fabricated. The size of cross-section (250mm×400mm) is the same for all specimens as shown in Fig. 1(a). Five longitudinal bars were arranged in both the first and second layers, and the five longitudinal bars in the second layer is cut off. The main parameters are presence of cut-off longitudinal reinforcement, ratio of transverse reinforcement and location of additional stirrups. The parameters of beams are shown in Table1. The ratio of transverse reinforcements was arranged as follows: 0.3%, 0.6% and 1.2%. The additional stirrups were placed with two types of arrangement manner, which are placed in the head of cut-off longitudinal bars and in the region of middle of beams including in the head of cut-off longitudinal bar as shown in Fig. 1(c). Concrete compressive strengths of beams were from 54 to 77 N/mm2 . High-strength steel bars were used for longitudinal, transverse reinforcement and additional stirrups. The length of the beam was designed to 1600mm. The cut-off length of 680 mm corresponds to required length of cut-off longitudinal bars specified in AIJ standard.
Cyclic loading was applied with antisymmetric moment so that horizontal load is applied to the center of the beam as shown in Fig. 2. From the tests, following conclusions were obtained. 1) It is better to place the additional stirrups both in the head of cut-off longitudinal reinforcement and the region where longitudinal bar is placed in one layer to prevent undesirable cracks; 2) Smaller width of residual cracks of the beam with additional stirrups in the head of cut-off longitudinal bars was found. Shear capacity of the beam with additional stirrups was increased by arrangement of additional stirrups; 3) The maximum bond stress in the head of cut-off longitudinal bars was larger than bond strength calculated by AIJ standard; however, difference in maximum bond stress by arrangement of additional stirrups was not observed; 4) It is verified that maximum bond stress of cut-off longitudinal bars at the head region with additional stirrups can be predicted by present AIJ standard.
