    A hybrid method for estimation of atmospheric concentrations of multiple radionuclides was developed and applied to NaI(Tl) pulse height records measured in Ibaraki Prefecture in the morning of 15 March 2011 when three radioactive plumes from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident passed. The method is based on the simple principle for separation from deposited radionuclides' contribution and the concentration estimation for multiple radionuclides. Difficulty in the concentration estimation due to complexity of surrounding terrains and geometry was overcome to obtain spatiotemporal variations in atmospheric concentrations of Xe-133, Te- 132, I-131, I-132 and I-133 in the three plumes at 21 monitoring stations. The plume axis with higher I-131 concentration of 5.40 kBq m-3 than the previous estimations during the second plume was found in the northwestern inland area. A substantially lower Xe-133/I-131 concentration ratio of the first plume than those of the others was again recognized. The details of non-uniform spatial distribution of the radionuclide composition were found for each of the three plumes.

    The observation network of atmospheric radon-222 (222 Rn) concentration established in East Asia region is introduced, and the characteristics of the observations at two continental sites Beijing and Seoul and three remote sites Cape Ochiishi, Hachijo Is. and Hateruma Is. are discussed in this paper. Higher levels of 222 Rn concentrations with typical diurnal variation with early morning maxima were observed on the continent, and lower levels with no diurnal variation at remote islands. Seasonal variations with summer minima and winter maxima were commonly obtained at all five observatories, and they suggested contribution of 222 Rn originated from the continent to atmospheric 222 Rn over the remote islands isolated in the ocean. A backward trajectory analysis showed clear relationship between variation in wind field and in 222 Rn concentration at Hachijo Is., and proved availability of the observation for analysis of atmospheric transport in East Asia.

    In this study, the 222Rn flux density distribution at surface was estimated in East Asia with the Bayesian synthesis inversion using measurement data and a long-range atmospheric 222Rn transport model. Surface atmospheric 222Rn concentrations measured at Hateruma Island in January 2008 were used. The estimated 222Rn flux densities were generally higher than the prior ones. The area-weighted mean 222Rn flux density for East Asia in January 2008 was estimated to be 44.0 mBq m22 s21. The use of the estimated 222Rn flux density improved the discrepancy of the model-calculated concentrations with the measurements at Hateruma Island.

    The activity size distributions of indoor and outdoor radioactive aerosol associated with short-lived radon decay products were observed at Nagoya, Japan for some periods from 2010 to 2012, following the indoor observation by Mostafa et al. (2011). The tendency of smaller indoor AMAD after rainfalls showed in the previous study was not consistently obtained, while the consistent tendency of less indoor radioactive particles with diameters in the accumulation mode was observed again after rainfalls. The indoor aerosols showed activity size distributions similar to the outdoor ones. Non-radioactive aerosol particle concentrations measured with a laser particle counter suggested a somewhat liner relationship with AMAD.

    A quantitatively characterised atmospheric process can provide important information on a variety of atmospheric models and help one to understand the deposition process in the atmosphere. In this study, the total activity concentrations of 214Pb and 214Bi and the activity ratios of 214Bi/214Pb in collected rain samples were measured by two-inch well-type NaI(Tl) detectors. Observed precipitations were classified by the origins of their air mass (continental/maritime) and their meteorological conditions (cold/ warm front, high/low pressure). The result shows that (1) when the air mass passed over the continent of Asia 5 d prior to the pre- cipitation, the activity concentration of radon decay products in the rainwater tended to be higher than when the air mass passed over from the Pacific Ocean; (2) higher activity concentrations were more frequently observed in precipitations accompanied with a cold front than warm/stationary front; (3) in general, the activity ratios of 214Bi/214Pb decrease with increase in rain intensity.

    Phylogenetic analysis of bacteria preserved within an ice wedge from the Fox permafrost tunnel was undertaken by cultivation and molecular techniques. The radiocarbon age of the ice wedge was determined. Our results suggest that the bacteria in the ice wedge adapted to the frozen conditions have survived for 25,000 years.

    原子力発電所で実施されている環境モニタリングでは、自然界に存在する放射能・放射線の変動の把握が重要である。大気中に存在するラドンとその長寿命子孫核種および宇宙線生成核種は気象条件等によって大きく変動するので、その変動要因と変動様態を知ることは環境モニタリングに有用である。また、遠隔地での事故時に放出される可能性のある人工放射性核種の大気中での挙動を予め数値シミュレーション等で予測しておくことも重要である。
