    Rod-like single crystals of Sr6Co5O14.3 Were grown by the flux method, and the electrical conductivity (sigma), Seebeck coefficient (S) and power factor (sigma S-2) were investigated in the temperature range of 300-900 K in air to explore the potential as thermoelectric materials. Sr6Co5O14.3 is an oxygen-nonstoichiometric phase of Sr6Co5O15, which is a member of the homologous (A(3)Co(2)O(6))(m)(A(3)Co(3)O(9))(n) [A = Ca, Sr, Ba] series including Ca3Co2O6 (m = 1, n = 0) and BaCoO3 (m = 0, n = 1) as the end members. The rod-like single crystals mainly grew along Co-O one-dimensional chains (c-axis) consisting of face-sharing CoO6 octahedra and CoO6 triangular prisms. The electrical conductivity along the Co-O chains showed semiconducting behavior (260-9600 S m(-1) in the temperature range of 300-900 K). The Seebeck coefficient was positive, and decreased with increasing temperature (280-140 mu V K-1). The power factor increased with increasing temperature (0.20 x 10(-4)-1.9 x 10(-4) W m(-1) K-2), which was about one order of magnitude larger than that of polycrystalline Sr6Co5O15.

    High-resolution, powder, neutron diffraction data have been collected on the protonic conductors SrZr0.95Sc0.05O3-alpha with and without dissolved heavy water at a temperature of 10K. Diffraction data have been analyzed by the Rietveld and maximum entropy methods (MEM). The crystal structure of these samples at 10K is successfully refined assuming a perovskite-type structure with the space group Pnma.     The crystalline quality of the Ag-107 films on Si(111) surface grown by mass-separated low energy ion beam deposition (IBD) has been studied by means of combined techniques of reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), low energy electron diffraction, and Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS). Although crystalline quality of the films hardly depends on Ag ion energy in the range of 30-100 eV for RHEED patterns, the RBS-channeling spectra clearly show the difference in the minimum channeling yield chi(min) and the increasing rate of the channeling yield d chi(z)/dz. The Ag ion energy to obtain a well-crystallized Ag film is found to be 30-50 eV. In addition,. it is shown that excellent quality of the Ag films grown at elevated temperature can be obtained by means of IBD.

    Sr6Co5O15, a member of the (A(3)CO(2)O(6)) m (A(3)Co(3)O(9))(n) [A = Ca, Sr, Ba] series, showed oxygen nonstoichiometry. Sr6Co5O15.12, Sr6Co5O14.98, Sr6Co5O14.45 and Sr6Co5O14.26 were prepared by a solid state reaction in air. The Sr6Co5O15 phase is stable in the temperature range of 873-973 K in air, there are structure transitions at 773 K and above 1023 K. With the loss of oxygen, the a-axis parameter of the Sr6Co5O15 phase decreased from 9.4988(3) angstrom (Sr6Co5O15.12) to 9.4390(4) angstrom (Sr6Co5O14.26) and the c-axis parameter increased from 12.3772(3) angstrom (Sr6Co5O15.12) to 12.5066(4) angstrom (Sr6Co5O14.26) with decreasing oxygen content. The Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction data suggested that the increase in the c-axis was mainly due to the increase in the Co-Co distance between the CoO6 trigonal prism and CoO6 octahedron.     Proton concentration in SrZr0.95M0.05O3-alpha (M=Ga, Sc, Y and Nd) was measured with a thermobalance at different temperatures (T=673-973 K) and water vapor pressures (P-H2O=0.9-12.8 kPa). At all the pressures and temperatures examined, the amount of proton concentration in these samples is in the order of Sc>Y>Ga>Nd. By an equilibrium evaluation, we estimated the maximum possible proton concentration about 2.0 mol% in these samples. Infrared (IR) absorption spectra are measured in these samples. The absorption bands can be fitted by four (M=Ga, Y, Nd) or three (M=Sc) Gaussian bands.

    The filled skutterudites of the form UyFexCo4-,Sb-12 were fabricated and the thermoelectric properties for certain samples studied. For samples containing 100% cobalt, uranium could not be incorporated, or 'filled', into the voids in the skutterudite structure. With substitution of iron for cobalt the void occupancy by uranium increased. Uranium filled samples indicated relatively large Seebeck coefficient and p-type behavior. The thermal conductivity, especially below 500 K, of UyFexCo4-,Sb-12 was strongly depressed by uranium filling and iron substitution. The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merits, ZT, were improved by uranium filling and showed a maximum value ZT = 0.55 at 800 K for U(0.2)FeFo(3)Sb(12) of nominal composition.     Polycrystalline samples of Ca3Co2O6-based solid solutions, (Ca1-xBix)(3)Co2O6, Ca-3(Co1-xCux)(2)O-6 and (Ca1-xBix)(3)(Co1-xCux)(2)O-6, were prepared by solid state reaction at 1243 K in air. The single phases were obtained at x <= 0.02 for (Ca1-xBix)(3)Co2O6, Ca-3(Co1-xCux)(2)O-6 and (Ca1-xBix)(3)(Co1-xCux)(2)O-6, and the lattice parameters increased with increasing x. The electrical resistivity (rho) of the solid solutions exhibited semiconducting behavior in 300-1170 K, and the values of electrical resistivity decreased with increasing x (3.8 x 10(-2) Omega cm for (Ca0.98Bi0.02)(3)Co2O6, 5.7 x 10(-2) Omega cm for Ca-3(Co0.98Cu0.02)(2)O-6 and 4.8 x 10(-2) Omega cm for (Ca0.98Bi0.02)(3)(Co0.98Cu0.02)(2)O-6 at 1170 K). Seebeck coefficient (S) of the solid solutions were smaller than that of Ca3CO2O6 below 800 K, however, the values were almost the same as that of Ca3Co2O6 (around 140 mu V/K) above 1000 K. The power factor (S-2/rho) tended to increase with increasing temperature and x, and the maximum values were 5.0 x 10(-5) W/(m K-2) for (Ca0.98Bi0.02)(3)Co2O6, 3.7 x 10(-5) W/(m K-2) for Ca(Co0.98Cu0.02)(2)O-6 and 4.0 x 10(-5) W/(m K-2) for (Ca0.98Bi0.02)(3)(Co0.98Cu0.02)(2)O-6 at 1170 K.     The transient reflectivity change due to subpicosecond laser-pulse heating is measured for aluminum sheets and a gold film. While hot electron relaxation and/or diffusion seem to control the temperature relaxation in the gold film, the ordinary thermal diffusion seems to be responsible for that in the aluminum sheets. It is possible to determine the characteristic time of the thermal diffusion in the aluminum sheets by fitting a theoretical curve to the observed transient reflectivity. Its reliability is, however, somewhat questionable because of the asymptotic nature of the temporal dependence.     Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity for polycrystalline (UB)-B-n (B-n(4): natural boron) were measured in the temperature range from 300 to 850 K. Seebeck coefficient increased with temperature from 8 mu VK- 1 at 300 K to 40 mu VK- 1 at 850 K, and the electrical conductivity decreased with increasing temperature from 2.7 X 10(3) Scm(- 1) at 300 K to 2.3 X 10(3) Scm(-1) at 850 K. The temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity suggested that UB4 had semimetallic character. The power factor for (UB4)-B-n showed the value of 3.4 X 10(-4) Wm(-1) K-2 at 850 K. The power factor for isotopically enriched (UB4)-B-n showed the value of 7.2 X 10(-4) Wm(-1) K-2 at 850 K.     Polycrystalline samples of Sr6Co5O15 (M = 1, n = 1) and Ca3Co2O6 (M = 1, n = 0), which are the members of homologous series (A(3)Co(2)O(6))(m)(A'3Co3O9)(n) (A, A' = Ca, Sr, Ba), were prepared by solid state reaction in air. The theoretical density ratios of obtained pellets, 89% for Sr6Co5O15 and 95% for Ca3Co2O6, sintered by the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method increased compared to those of Sr6Co5O15 (60%) and Ca3Co2O6 (67%) prepared by solid state reaction, respectively. Electrical resistivity (rho) of Sr6Co5O15 and Ca3Co2O6 exhibited semiconducting behavior in 300-1120 K. The temperature dependence of electrical resistivity for Sr6Co5O15 showed a hysteresis-like behavior. Electrical resistivity of Sr6Co5O15 (6.1 x 10(-2) to 4.6 Omega cm) and Ca3Co2O6 (4.1 x 10(-2) to 1.2 x 10(3) Omega cm) sintered by the SPS method were lower than those of Sr6Co5O15 (1.3 x 10(-1) to 8.0 Omega cm) and Ca3Co2O6 (1.5 x 10(-1) to 4.5 x 10(3) Omega cm) prepared by solid state reaction, respectively. Seebeck coefficient (S) of Sr6Co5O15 and Ca3Co2O6 were positive and more than 100 muV/K in 300-1120 K, and both compounds showed the different temperature dependences, respectively. The power factor (S-2/rho) tended to increase with increasing temperature; the maximum values of the power factor were 1.4 x 10(-5) W/(m K-2) for Sr6Co5O15 and 1.6 x 10(-5) W/(m K-2) for Ca3Co2O6 prepared by solid state reaction, and 3.0 x 10(-5) W/(m K-2) for Sr6Co5O15 and 5.2 x 10(-1) W/(m K-2) for Ca3Co2O6 sintered by the SPS method.     The isotopically enriched disk samples of B-10(4) C-12, ((B0.75B0.25)-B-10-B-11)(4) C-12, (B-10(0.20) B-11(0.80))(4) C-12, B-10(4) C-13, B-10(4) (C-12(0.50) C-13(0.50)), B-11(4) ((C0.50C0.50)-C-12-C-13), (B4C)-B-11-C-12, B-11(4) C-13 and natural "B-4"C were prepared by the spark plasma sintering method. The thermal diffusivity for each sample was measured by the laser flash method over the temperature range from 290 to 1,450 K. The isotope effects on the thermal conductivities, which were calculated from the measured thermal diffusivities, the heat capacity for natural B4C and densities, were discussed in terms of the phonon-velocity and the scattering probability of phonon by isotopic impurity. The thermal conductivity decreased only with increasing the mean mass of boron. In the single-atom model, the phonon-velocity decreases with increasing the mass of atoms. The thermal conductivity obtained in this study was seen to be independent on the scattering probability of phonon by isotopic impurity, but to depend on the phonon-velocity. Isotope effects are thought to be difficult to detect in polycrystalline boron carbide.

    The glass-transition temperature and the electrical conductivity of lithium borate (0.33Li(2)O-0.67B(2)O(3)) glasses with various isotopic compositions were determined by differential thermal analysis and by impedance spectroscopy, respectively. The obtained glass-transition temperature as well as the vibrational frequency of B-O network structure was independent of lithium isotopic composition. This result indicates that lithium ions, which exist as network modifier, only weakly interact with B-O network structure. In addition, the glass-transition temperature increased with B-10 content although the reason has not been understood. The electrical conductivity. on the other hand, increased with Li-6 content. The ratio of the conductivity of Li-6 Oass to that of Li-7 glass was found to be 2, being larger than the value (7/6)(1/2) calculated with the simple classical diffusion theory. This strong mass dependence could be explained by the dynamic structure model, which assumes local structural relaxation even far below the glass-transition temperature.     The local structures around Ce and Ln atoms in Ce(1-x)Ln(x)O(2.00-y) (Ln=Y; x=0.05-0.30, Gd; x=0.10-0.30, Sm and Yb; x=0.20 and 0.30) were studied by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The Ce-O inter-atomic distances decreased with increasing oxygen deficiency caused by increasing the dopant content and reducing the valence of Ce in the samples.     Enthalpy increment measurements on (Ca1-xPux)TiO3 (x = 0 and 0.20) were carried out at temperatures between room temperature and 1180 K by the drop method using a high-temperature Calvet micro-calorimeter. The enthalpy increment values were given for CaTiO3 and (Ca0.80Pu0.20)TiO3 in polynomial expressions of temperature using Shomate's method. Heat capacity equations obtained in this study were used to derive the thermodynamic functions, namely entropy and free energy function, and to determine the thermodynamic formation values, namely the standard molar enthalpy of formation, the standard molar Gibbs free energy of formation and the standard molar entropy of formation. The Gibbs free energy of formation of (Ca0.80Pu0.20)TiO3 was smaller than that of CaTiO3 in the temperature range from room temperature to 1200 K, showing that (Ca0.80Pu0.20)TiO3 is thermodynamically more stable than CaTiO3.     Plutonium-doped and undoped lanthanum zirconates were prepared by solid state reaction. The solubility limit of Pu in La2Zr2O7 was studied by X-ray diffraction, and the solubility limits of Pu in pyrochlore-type phase prepared in air, vacuum and Ar-8%H-2 atmospheres were determined to be 10, 35 and 100 mol%, respectively. The compound with 80 mol% Pu prepared in air and the compounds with 80 and 100 mol% Pu prepared in vacuum showed single fluorite-type phases. Thermal expansion coefficients of (La1-xPux)(2)Zr2O7+y (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.80) were also measured by high-temperature X-ray diffraction at temperatures between room temperature and 1273 K in air and He-8%H-2 atmospheres and were found to increase with increasing Pu content. The dependence of the linear thermal expansion coefficients on Pu content is discussed from the point of view of the radii of both tetravalent Pu in air and trivalent Pu in He-8%H2.     Precipitation-free samples of Rh-doped Ru2Si3 were prepared by the floating zone (FZ) method. The temperature dependences of the electrical resistivities and the Seebeck coefficients of Rh-doped Ru2Si3 (Rh content = 0, 4, 6 mol%) were measured. The electrical resistivities of both 4% and 6% Rh-doped Ru2Si3 were smaller than those of undoped Ru2Si3 prepared by the FZ method and 4% Rh-doped one prepared by other methods. The maximum value of the Seebeck coefficients for all samples was -175 muV/K at 673 K for 4% Rh-doped Ru2Si3. The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit reached 0.8 for 4% Rh-doped Ru2Si3 at 1073 K, which was about 50% larger than that of optimized n-type SiGe. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.     The phase relationship between PuO2-x and CaTiO3 at room temperature was investigated by X-ray diffraction. It was found that Pu was soluble to at least 20 mol% in CaTiO3 in Ar-8% H-2. Solubility of Pu in CaTiO3 was extremely limited (below 5 mol%) under oxidizing condition. The thermal expansion of(Ca1-xPux)TiO3 (x = 0-0.15) was investigated in the temperature range from room temperature to 1273 K by high-temperature X-ray diffraction. The linear thermal expansion coefficients showed considerable anisotropy for the orthorhombic Pbnm structure and decreased with increasing Pu content. The structural phase-transition temperatures were estimated from the lattice constants and were relatively insensitive to the content of Pu dopant.     The thermoelectric power and electrical resistivity of UB4 with three different boron isotope enrichments were measured in the temperature range from 80 to 300 K. The thermoelectric power of each sample decreased with decreasing temperature, but a slight saturation of the decrease due to phonon-drag effect was observed below 120 K for both boron isotope enriched samples. The resistivity decreased with decreasing temperature and there existed no large difference among the resistivities of natural boron. boron-10 enriched and boron-11 enriched samples.     The new possibility of uranium noble metal silicides for thermoelectric materials was investigated by the analogy with transition-metal silicides having good thermoelectric power. The Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity of URu2Si2 and U2Ru3Si5 were measured in the temperature range from 300 to 1100 K and Hall coefficient at room temperature. The Seebeck coefficients of URu2Si2 and U2Ru3Si5 were obtained to be -48.9 and -32.8 muV K-1 at 1100 K, respectively. The temperature dependences of the electrical resistivities for URu2Si2 and U2Ru3Si5 were small, which are similar to that of uranium metal rather than that of silicon semiconductor.     Vapor pressures of Bi-2 (g) over La0.03Bi0.97 and two-phase mixtures of Bi + LaBi2. LaBi2 + LaBi, LaBi + La4Bi3, La4Bi3 + La5Bi3, and La5Bi3 + La2Bi were measured in the temperature range from 795 to 1066 K with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer equipped with a tungsten Knudsen cell. The vapor pressure of Bi-2 (g) over the two-phase mixtures of La2Bi + La could not be detected experimentally in this temperature range. The thermodynamic activity of bismuth was determined from the vapor pressure of Bi-2 (g). Thermodynamic activities of lanthanum over alloys were derived from those of bismuth in the alloys in this study and that of lanthanum in the bismuth in a previous study by graphic integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. Thermodynamic quantities such as Gibbs Free energy of formation, excess enthalpy, etc., were also calculated from the thermodynamic activities.

    The EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) analyses were carried out for Ti-K, Ce-L3, Nd-L3 and U-L3 edges to make clear the local structures in (Ca1-xCex)TiO3 (x = 0.10, 0.20), (Ca1-xNdx)TiO3 (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) and (Ca1-xUx)(Ti1-2xAl2x)O-3 (x = 0, 0.05). With increasing neodymium content in (Ca1-xNdx)TiO3 the first nearest titanium-oxygen distances decreased. On the other hand, with increasing cerium content in (Ca1-xCex)TiO3, the first nearest titanium-oxygen distances increased. The first nearest titanium-oxygen distance in (Ca1-xUx)(Ti1-2xAl2x)O-3 was larger than that in undoped CaTiO3. With increasing dopant content, the first nearest dopant (cerium or neodymium)-oxygen distances increased. From the result of the compositional dependencies of bonding length (cation-oxygen distance), which is inversely proportional to the bonding energy, it is estimated that magnitude of the leaching rate of Ce-doped CaTiO3 is larger than those of Nd-doped and undoped CaTiO3. The experimental results on the leaching rates of doped and undoped CaTiO3 were consistent with this estimation. The structural change of (Ca0.80Ce0.20)TiO3 after a leaching test in HCl at 363 K for 140 days was also measured by X-ray diffraction and XANES analysis. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.     The two phase transitions of CaTiO3 and (Ca0.85Nd0.15)TiO3 were studied by high temperature X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis in the temperature range 300-1723 K. The presence of the two kinds of phase transitions in CaTiO3 and (Ca0.85Nd0.15)TiO3 at about 1390 K and about 1530 K recently found by the heat capacity measurement in our laboratory was confirmed. From the X-ray diffraction patterns of CaTiO3 and (Ca0.85Nd0.15)TiO3, the first phase transition at lower temperature was due to the change from the orthorhombic Pbnm to the orthorhombic Cmcm structure, and the second one at higher temperature was due to change from Cmcm to the cubic Pm3m structure, originating from the sequential rotations of the TiO6 octahedra about one of the axes. Since no clear peak was seen at the phase transition around 1390 K in the DTA curve in contrast with the presence of the endothermic peak at the transition around 1530 K, it is thermodynamically considered that the former and the latter transition were secund-and first-order phase transition,respectively.     The solubility limits of Ce, Nd and U in CaTiO3, one of the promising host matrix for fixation of lanthanide and actinide elements, were determined by X-ray diffraction to be between 20 and 30 mol%, between 20 and 30 mol% and between 0 and 3 mol%, respectively. By substituting Al to Ti in CaTiO3, the solubility limit of U in CaTiO3 increased to be between 5 and 7.5 mol%.     The reactions in the U-Cs-Mo-I-O system at 1073 K have been studied as a function of oxygen potential. The chemical constitution and the morphology of the phases formed were examined by electron-probe microanalyzer and X-ray diffractometer. The existence of a two-phase field UO2+x + Cs2UO4 was confirmed in the U-Cs-O system, The threshold oxygen potential was determined for the decomposition of CsI by UO2+x to form Cs2U4O12 and gaseous iodine. The effect of molybdenum on the UO2+x-CsI reaction was also investigated. Predominance of Cs2MoO4 over Cs2UO4 was verified in a certain range of oxygen potentials.     The deuterium permeation through a polycrystalline copper membrane driven by an ion beam (3 keV D-2(+)) was measured as a function of temperature (573-873 K) and surface impurity concentration. For copper a single-impurity layer can be prepared by combining thermal annealing and argon ion bombardment. The surface recombination coefficient was evaluated from the measured permeation flux.     Chemical behavior of an intermetallic compound ZrCo with hydrogen at high temperature region was studied with respect to application utilizing the reversible hydrogenation. While ZrCo compound reacts with hydrogen to form ZrCoH(0-3) below 400 degrees C, the disproportionation reaction, 2ZrCo + H-2 --> ZrH2 + ZrCo2 occurs above 400 degrees C under hydrogen pressure higher than the equilibrium decomposition pressure of ZrCoH(0-3). X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the reaction is completed in 5 h at 500 degrees C and it takes more than 40 h at 400 degrees C. No sign of generation of ZrH2 + ZrCo2 phase was observed by the X-ray diffraction in 10 h at 400 degrees C, however. The disproportionated product completely returned to single-phase ZrCo when evacuated at or above 500 degrees C for several hours, thus this reaction is reversible. Kinetics of the disproportionation reaction was expressed by an Avrami equation R = 1 - exp{-(t/tau)(n)}. The reaction speed was expressed by an Arrhenius form. For practical application of ZrCo, the results suggest some operational precaution and limitation, and recovery treatment when the material is suspected to have lost some capacity by disproportionation reaction.

    Systems of hydrogen gas and solid solutions of intermetallic compounds of ZrCo and HfCo were investigated. Both compounds form very similar cubic structures and the ingot obtained by are melting with composition of Zr-(1-x)HfxCo showed a single cubic phase by X-ray diffraction analysis. Pressure-composition isotherms of the H-Zr-(1-x)HfxCo (0 < x < 0.5) systems were measured below 400 degrees C or 1000 Torr. A single sloping plateau was observed on each isotherm obtained with these samples, suggesting that the sample is in a single phase, and a single process of hydrogenation has occurred. Repeated hydrogenation-dehydrogenation cycles did not generate separate ZrCo and HfCo phases. The equilibrium hydrogen pressure in the plateau region can be expressed in Arrhenius forms. The equilibrium pressure at the same temperature increases with increasing HfCo contents.

    Thermal diffusivity of two kinds of two-directional carbon-carbon composites were studied after neutron irradiation at temperatures 640-1070-degrees-C to a maximum neutron fluence 1.98 X 10(25) n/m2 (E > 29 fJ, 0.18 MeV) in the JMTR (Japan Materials Testing Reactor). The decrease of thermal diffusivity was observed after irradiation, and its significant decrease occurred at low neutron fluence, followed by gradual decrease with neutron fluence. The changes in thermal diffusivity, which were normalized to unirradiated values, were large at low measurement temperatures and decreased with temperature and also increased with neutron fluence. The changes in thermal conductivity related to thermal diffusivity are also discussed.

    Behavior and improvement of the ZrCo based intermetallic materials for tritium recovery, storage and supply are studied. Compound ZrCo was found to be subject to disproportionation at high temperature under high hydrogen pressure to form ZrCo2 and ZrH2. This process is completely reversed by vacuum treatment at temperature above 500 degrees C for several hours. Kinetics of the disproportionation was described to be similar to phase transition that have apparent incuvation time to take place. The logarithmic reaction rate constant was related to the reciprocal temperature. With some precautions drawn from the results, this reaction is not a problem in practice. For the application that needs prolonged supply of relatively high-pressure tritium, solid solution of ZrCo and HfCo was developed as an improvement of the material. Materials otained by are melting with compoistion of Zr-(1-x)HfxCo (0<x<0.5) exhibits single plateaus in pressure - composition isotherms when hydrogenated. Repeated hydrogenation - dehydrogenation cycles did not generate separate ZrCo and HfCo phases. The equilibrium hydrogen pressure in the plateau regions are expressed as a functio of reciprocal temperature and increases with increasing HfCo contents. This material provides controlled equilibrium hydrogen pressure required for specific applications of tritium storage nad supply.

    We reexamined the formalism to describe the steady-state hydrogen transport in a metal membrane exposed to hydrogen gas or a hydrogen ion beam. On the basis of the formalism, we derived the relation between the material/injection parameters and the transport regimes, which were characterized by specific profiles of the hydrogen concentration in the membrane or specific rate-limiting processes. The obtained relation was inconsistent with the previous one of Doyle and Brice (DB). Our derivation is directly based on the concentration profiles, and should therefore be correct as far as the concentration profile is concerned. We then extended the formalism to the ion-driven transport in the presence of the simultaneous gas-driven transport. Our formalism is different from DB's in that the former treats the increment in the concentration and the flux density due to the ion injection whereas the latter treats the total concentration and flux density. As far as the total quantities are concerned, DB's formalism will be preferable. However, our formalism may be more illuminating when the transport of the ion-originating hydrogen is important.

    The steady-state flux of deuterium permeation through an iron membrane (99.99 + % purity, 0.14 mm thickness) driven by a deuterium ion beam (5 keV D3+, 1.0 x 10(15) D-atoms cm-2 s-1) was measured in the range of 30-1050-degrees-C. The permeation flux increased with increasing temperature above 200-degrees-C whereas it was roughly constant below 150-degrees-C. Such temperature dependence was observed for nickel and copper as well, and has been ascribed to the transition in the rate-limiting processes of the deuterium transport in the membrane. The recombination coefficient of deuterium on iron surface was evaluated from the permeation flux density. In the case of alpha-iron, the evaluated value agreed with a semitheoretical one estimated using literature data of adsorption probability and solubility. This agreement indicates that the release kinetics reflects the activation barrier for hydrogen (deuterium) adsorption.

PbO-SiO2 (34.0, 49.6, 66.2 mol% SiO2) glasses were investigated to an integrated flux of 2 x 10(20) neutrons/cm2 (E > 1 MeV) using the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR). The effect of neutron irradiation is to selectively break the Si-O bond in a three dimensional network group and a more random or disordered system with small ionic species in SiO2-rich glasses is produced.     The ion driven permeation of deuterium through a copper membrane has been investigated using a 5 keV D3+ beam of 1.0 x 10(15) D-atoms cm-2 s-1 at 80-800-degrees-C. Above 400-degrees-C the temperature dependence of the permeation rate in a steady state is characterized by a local minimum at approximately 700-degrees-C and a local maximum at approximately 500-degrees-C. Under continuous Ar+ bombardment on the backside surface of the sample, however, such a complex dependence disappears. These results indicate that the process on the backside surface limits the permeation rate at least in the absence of the continuous Ar+ bombardment. The complex temperature dependence also suggests that the surface condition and/or mechanism of recombinative release changes with temperature. Below 300-degrees-C, on the other hand, the permeation rate seems to decrease with increasing temperature. This can be attributed to a transition in the transport regime.

    Temperature dependence of the Raman spectrum of lithium oxide single crystal has been measured over a temperature range of 80 to 1073 K. The frequency shift and the line width of the Raman spectrum in lithium oxide were about 531 and 4.5 cm-1 at 80 K, respectively. At 1073 K, the frequency shift and the line width attained the values of 464 and 112 cm-1, respectively. The strong temperature dependence of the frequency shift and line width was compared with data from some crystals with a fluorite structure.
