    We succeeded in synthesizing two new lanthanum nitrides in a supercritical nitrogen fluid at high pressure (about 30 GPa) and high temperature (about 2000 K), using a diamond anvil cell and a YAG laser heating system. These nitrides were found to be stable down to 5 GPa and similar to 300 K in a nitrogen atmosphere. One of the new lanthanum nitrides is a cubic P lattice-type phase, which is a main phase synthesized nitride. The calculated lattice parameter is a = 11.979 angstrom at 5 GPa, 300 K. The other nitride is of a trigonal P lattice-type. The calculated lattice parameters are a = 3.889 angstrom and c = 6.691 angstrom at 5 GPa, 300 K. The most likely phase of the former new La nitride is Pa (3) over bar La2N3+delta, the structure of which may be similar to the Ia (3) over bar Mn2O3-type (Ia80). The phase of the latter nitride is P (3) over bar ml La2N3+delta, the structure of which is the same as the P (3) over bar ml La2O3-type (hP5).

    The electronic structure of the Zr-based metallic glasses has been investigated by theoretical and experimental approaches. One approach is band calculations of the Zr2Ni (Zr66.7Ni33.3) compound to investigate the electronic structure of the Zr66.7Ni33.3 metallic glass (Delta T-x = 0 K) of which the local atomic structure is similar to that of the Zr2Ni compound. The other is photoemission spectroscopy of the Zr50Cu35Al15 bulk metallic glass (BMG) (Delta T-x = 69 K). Here Delta T-x = T-x - T-x where T-x and T-g are crystallization and glass transition temperature, respectively. Both results and previous ones on the Zr55Cu30Ni5Al10 BMG indicate that there is a pseudogap at the Fermi level in the electronic structure of these Zr-based metallic glasses, independent of the value of the Delta T-x. This implies that the pseudogap at the Fermi level is one of the factors that stabilize the glass phase of Zr-based metallic glasses.

    Effects of the 2 at% addition on the stability and hydrogen-induced internal friction behavior of the Ti34Zr11Cu47Ni8 multicomponent glassy alloy have been investigated. Thermal analysis indicates that the supercooled liquid region decreases by adding Nb, indicating that 2 at % Nb addition reduces glass forming ability. On the other hand, there is no effect of the Nb addition on the hydrogen content dependence of the peak internal friction and the peak temperature. Nb has no attractive interaction with Ti and Zr but is attracted to Ni atoms. The contrasting effects of Nb addition are thus attributable to its alternative effects on the local atomic structure, i.e. no effect of Nb on the local atomic structure around Ti and Zr having high affinity with hydrogen but strong effect on the environment of Ni.

    Syntheses of 3d-transition metal (Ti-Cu) nitrides have been tried in a supercritical nitrogen fluid at high pressures (about 10 GPa) and high temperatures (about 1800 K) using diamond anvil cell and YAG laser heating system. Nitrides, such as TiN, VN, CrN, Mn3N2, Fe2N, Co2N and Ni3N have been successfully synthesized easily by a simple direct nitriding reaction between metal and fluid nitrogen in a short time, while any Cu nitrides were not synthesized. These results indicate that the ratio of nitrogen to metal, N/M, of the nitride decreases from 1 to 0 with the sequence from the early transition metal nitrides to the late transition metal ones. The systematic change of the N/M ratio and crystal structure of the 3d-transition metal nitrides is discussed and interpreted on the basis of the electron arrangement of the 3d-transition metal which is relevant to its coordination number.

    The effects of additions or Pd below 10 at.% on the stability and hydrogen-induced internal friction behavior of Ti34Zr11Cu47Ni8 glassy alloys have been investigated. Thermal analyses indicate that the Supercooled liquid region decreases distinctly with increasing Pd content. It was round that internal friction peak temperatures or Ti(34)Z(11)Cu(47)Ni(8)-Pd hydrogenated glassy alloys (HGAs) in the hydrogen content range below approximately 30 at.% H were higher than those of the original Ti34Zr11Cu47Ni8 FIGAs, especially at hydrogen contents below similar to 10 at.% H. It was also found that the internal friction peaks of Ti34Zr11Cu47Ni8-Pd HGAs increased with increasing hydrogen content below similar to 15 at% H, after which they tended to saturate. These results are in contrast to the effects of Si addition as previously reported. The effects of Pd are discussed from the viewpoint of the interstitial site distribution for hydrogen and local atomic structure of the glassy alloy.
