    In this paper, wave phenomena of an interface of two immiscible fluids circulating between two rotating cylinders were studied experimentally. The inner cylinder was rotating and the outer cylinder was fixed. The working fluids were silicone oil and water solution of glycerin. The development of the interface of the fluids with the Reynolds number was clarified by the visualization technique and the image processing. As the Reynolds number was increased, a ring-shaped hump on the surface was occurred along the outer cylinder. At higher Reynolds numbers, the hump changed to the progressive wave like a swell and traveled in the azimuthal direction. Then the swell became complicated with undulation. The height of the interface was measured using by the image processing and analysis. The surface in the outer area of the annulus was high. The ratio of the height to the length of the annulus was 16% as a maximum value and -8% as a minimum value. The amplitude and the frequency of the oscillation of the interface were measured. The ratio of the amplitude to the length of the annulus was 20% as a maximum value. The frequency of the oscillation of the interface was estimated about 5 Hz from the time-space topological space reconstructed from the height of the surface.

    In this study,we investigate the control of self-sustained oscillating flows over an open cavity using a sliding bottom wall.The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved usmg finite difference methods.A series of simulation are performed for a variety of bottom wall velocity from u_w = -0.1 to u_w = -1.0 with a length-to-depth ratio of L/D = 2.0.The results show that velocity fluctuations and pressure fluctuations are suppressed due to shear stress on bottom wall of cavity.The most effective condition of bottom wall velocity is u_w = -0.34.The control method by sliding bottom wall can suppress self-sustained oscillating flows over cavity.

    We have been investigated numerically and experimentally the effect of the radial gap
    at the low and the middle Reynolds numbers.
    The disk has a finite thickness.
    Therefore, Taylor-Couette type vortex flow ppear between the disk rim and the side wall
    of the cylindrical outer casing.
    When the rotation speed is not small, Taylor-vortex in the radial gap flow makes
    disturbances at the radial gap.
    When the axial gap between the disk surfaces and the end walls of the casing are wide,
    these disturbances are carried out by the inward flow on the stationary end walls of the
    casing.
    When the axial gap is narrow, the disturbances are apt to be confined in the radial gap,
    and a chain of vortices appear around the disk rim.

    The flow around a rotating disk in a cylindrical casing is investigated by the numerical approach. The disk has finite thickness and its radius is smaller than the inner radius of the outer casing. Because of the thickness of the disk, Taylor-Couette like vortex appears between the disk rim and the side wall of the casing. We show that this makes the various flow patterns depending on the Reynolds number and the axial gap width between the disk surface and the end walls of the casing.

    We investigate the onset and the decay of Taylor-Couette flow in finite cylinders, and estimated the time constant in the azimuthal section of the flow state transition between the super-critical state and the sub-critical state by fitting the numerical result to the solution of the Stuart-Landau equation. The inner cylinder rotates, and the outer cylinder and the both end walls of the cylinders are stationary. While the value of the time constant is small near the end walls and between the vortices, the value is large in the interior ration of each vortex.

    The flow around a rotating disk in a cylindrical casing is investigated by the numerical and experimental methods. The radius of the disk is shorter than the inner radius of the casing, as well as the thickness of the disk is smaller than the length of the casing. Therefore, the flow field has a radial gap in addition to a narrow axial gap. The rotation of the disk in a cylindrical casing generates the flow with bead-like and sickle-like vortex, and spiral rolls is confirmed by the numerical calculation between the disk and the stationary walls. We investigated by visualization the generation and the transition process of such a flow that depended on the Reynolds number. As a result, the critical Reynolds numbers at which the flow transition appears is examined.

    We performed numerical computations of Taylor vortex flow at small aspect ratio. When the flow developed from its initial state at rest, non-unique flow patterns appeared. This depended on the lengths of the cylinder and the final Reynolds number. In experiment, it is difficult to keep constant conditions because of the imperfection of the apparatus and the small disturbances of the flow field. Therefore, the experimental result may show variations inherit from imperfections. In this study, we focused our attention on the small fluctuations of flows. Two-dimensional numerical analysis is used to estimate the effect on the final modes of Taylor vortex flow. Statistical analysis of the results presents a favorable agreement with our prescribed experimental result.

    For the human motion detection by camera, it is usually needed to use sensor and/or markers. We propose a method that does not handle any sensors nor markers, instead, that adopts optical flows. By applying this method, we can analyze synchronization between human motions and classify moving direction of crowds. The result of the optical flows is assigned to a hue circle, and the histogram of the hue gives information to identify human motions.

    In this paper, we use the numerical and empirical approaches and investigate the flow around a finite size disk in a finite size outer cylindrical casing. The disk is located at the center of the stationary casing, and it is supported by a driving shaft through the disk and the casing. The disk rotates with the driving shaft. Five sizes of disks with different thicknesses and radii are used. The main purpose of this paper is to estimate the effect of the radial gaps on the entire flows. The combination of the thickness of the disk with smaller radius and the inner side of the casing with larger radius forms Taylor-Couette like vortex flow in the radial gap. The supercritical instability makes the unsteady wavy vortex flow around the disk rim. When the axial gap between the disk surface and the end-wall of the casing is wide, the unsteady wavy flow is convected along the end-wall of the casing and it makes spiral rolls with negative front angles. When the axial gap is narrower and the Reynolds number is small, the instabilities are confined in the radial gap, and a bead-like flow appears around the disk rim. At higher Reynolds number, the turbulent spirals and the mixed spirals with positive and negative front angles are predicted. It is also shown that the phase velocity of the spiral is about or above the half of the velocity of the rotating disk.

    This work studies wave motions and mixing phenomena in an interfacial surface of two immiscible fluids between rotating cylinders, the inner cylinder is rotating and the outer cylinder is fixed. This report clarifies a series of waving and mixing phenomena by flow visualization technique. When the Reynolds number was increased, the interfacial surface became unstable due to the centrifugal force and consequently the surface swelled up around the inside wall of the outer cylinder. At last the swelled part of the surface was torn off and a droplet of a liquid penetrates into the other liquid. It was clarified that the amplitude of the swelled film of surface in axial direction was increased up to a certain value with the Reynolds number. The critical Reynolds number for the onset of the mixing was decreased with aspect ratio. However it was not depended on the ratio of the viscosities of the two-liquids.

    Numerical study on flows around a rotating disk with finite radius is carried out, and the visualized and quantified results are compared with experimental observations. The gap between the disk rim and the cylindrical wall is finite. When the rim-casing clearance is small, the flow states show the transition from basic flows, via spiral rolls, to spiral turbulence. When the rim-casing clearance is larger, the flow is disturbed by the oscillation of two-torus flow and the spiral turbulence directly grows from the basic flows.

    In the numerical simulation of developing flows, infinite flow domains are usually truncated into infinte regions. For the reduction of the effect of this truncation, some Sommerfeld conditions are usually adopted. However, the validity of these conditions have not been well confirmed. In this paper, the effects of the main streams in the formulation of the Sommerfeld conditions were assessed, and the well-defined boundary condition at the outlet of the flow filed was proposed.

    Develping processes of rotating flow systems were investigated by a three-dimensional numerical method. A modified measure estimating the variation of the circumferential velocity component was introduced to identify the critical points where axisymmetric flows changed to the three-dimensional flows. It was shown that the time-dependent mode were classified four types which showed their own characteristic power spectrum.

    We performed numerical computations ofTaylor vortex flow at small aspect ratio. When the flow developed from its initial state at rest, non-unique flow patterns appeared. This depended on the lengths of the cylinder and the final Reynolds number. In experiment, it is difficult to keep constant conditions because of the imperfection of the apparatus and the small disturbances of the flow field. Therefore, the experimental result may show variations inherit from imperfections. In this study, we focused our attention on the small fluctuations of flows. Two-dimensional numerical analysis is used to estimate the effect
    on the final modes of Taylor vortex flow. Statistical analysis of the results presents a favorable agreement with our prescribed experimental result.

    The flow around a rotating disk in a cylindrical casing is investigated by the numerical and experimental methods. The radius of the disk is shorter than the inner radius of the casing, as well as the thickness of the disk is smaller than the length of the casing. Therefore, the flow field has a radial gap in addition to a narrow axial gap. The rotation of the disk in a cylindrical casing generates the flow with bead-like and sickle-like vortex, and spiral rolls is confirmed by the numerical calculation between the disk and the stationary walls. We investigated by visualization the generation and the transition process of such a flow that depended on the Reynolds number. As a result, the critical Reynolds numbers at which the flow transition appears is examined.

    The flow modes found in the flows around a rotating disk in a cylindrical casing and the flow between two rotating disks are studied. The modes of the free surface flows between vertical two rotating cylinders are also investigated. The flow field has limited boundaries in the axial and radial directions, and the interaction among the flows in the layers near the boundaries and the centrifugal effect make a complex three-dimensional flow structures. The flows starting from a stationary state are affected by the initial vortices appearing in these layers and the instability and they are led the final state via various developing processes. The scenario describing the flow evolutions is clarified in the flows around a disk. In the flow between two disks and the flow in the vertical cylinders, the visualization information and image processing are used to classify the flow modes.

    The flows around a rotating disk in a cylindrical casing and the flows between vertical coaxial cylinders are examined and the flow control method to obtain a optimal states is established. In the flow around the rotating disk, a variety of flow modes that originate from the radial clearance between the disk rim and the shroud and depend on the Reynolds number and the flow configuration are specified and classified. At the high Reynolds numbers, the interaction between the flow in the radial clearance and the spiral rolls in the disk region is investigated. In the flow between rotating cylinders, the transient Reynolds numbers at which the secondary flows transit to the primary flows are determined. These results give a new insight into the investigation of the dynamical mechanics in the three-dimensional rotating flows and contribute to provide control conditions to attain favorable flows.

    We carried out combined studies of the experimental and numerical approaches on the flow around a rotating disk in a cylindrical casing. Especially, the focus was placed on the flow developing in the radial gap between the finite-thickness disk and the side wall of the cylindrical casing. The result shows the great effect of the radial gap on the flow structure. It also represents the scenario of the developing process of the flow to the final well formed flow.
