    宇宙ガンマ線観測は、宇宙線物理学、高エネルギー天体物理学、宇宙論、基礎物理と多岐にわたる波及効果をもたらす。また近年のニュートリノや重力波も併せたマルチメッセンジャー天文学において、ガンマ線は決定的に重要なメッセンジャーを担う。多段シフターによる時間情報を持つ革新的な原子核乾板検出器(時間分解原子核乾板検出器)を実現し、世界最高角度分解能、世界初偏光有感、世界最大口径面積での宇宙ガンマ線精密観測への展開を目指す。
    大面積、長時間、高時間分解能、低エネルギー閾値実現の鍵を握るローラー駆動型多段シフターを新たに考案し、開発をおこなってきた。これまで常温常圧下での動作試験をおこなってきた。ここから気球実験環境を模擬した低温低圧下での環境試験をおこなった。また小判エマルションフィルムを部分的に搭載した環境試験おこなった。そして全面にエマルションフィルムを搭載した総合的な環境試験をおこなった。もう一方で2~4号機についてあぶりだした不具合の改善を図った。そして常温常圧下での動作試験をおこない、低温低圧下での環境試験をおこなった。またこれら一連の環境試験の中で様々な試行錯誤、創意工夫、そして改良に改良を重ねることで環境試験の突破を達成した。また姿勢監視スターカメラについて計6台のフライトモデルを構築した(方位90度ごとに計3台×2セット)。また電源周りも含め気球実験全系を構築し、よりシンプルで確実な動作を追求した改良を施した。そして気球実験全系での動作試験をStep-by-Stepに繰り返しおこなった。また気球実験を模擬した総合的な環境試験をおこなった。また与圧容器ゴンドラへ全系を実装し、S-b-Sに繰り返し動作試験をおこなった。そして荷造りをおこない、海上便で気球実験拠点であるアリススプリングス(豪)に向けて発送した。もう一方で多段シフターに搭載するエマルションフィルムの製造をおこなった。自動飛跡読取装置を通した性能評価や、本番と同じエマルションフィルムパック(サイズや構成)および温度・期間を想定した長期特性試験や潜像退行試験をおこなった。そして本番エマルションフィルムについてリフレッシュ・調湿・真空パックを施した。その際の環境監視系は開発して品質管理を実現させた。また一部のエマルションフィルムをサンプリングして、性能評価をおこなった。そして専用開発梱包で、冷蔵航空便で現地に向けて発送した。
    ローラー駆動型多段シフターの環境試験を実施し、様々な試行錯誤、創意工夫、そして改良に改良を重ねることで開発の難所を突破した。またステップ・バイ・ステップで全系を繰り返し繰り返し動作確認にすることよって着実な準備を達成した。現地入りして最終準備をおこない、予定通り準備を完了させた。
    気球実験を遂行し、ローラー駆動型多段シフターの実践投入を果たす。実験後エマルションフィルム、取得データを日本に返送する。エマルションフィルムを現像し、乾燥後にエマルションフィルムの表面析出銀をこすり取り、膨潤処理によって膜厚を調整する。そして自動飛跡読取装置でエマルションフィルムの飛跡を読み出し、データ処理・フライトデータ解析体制を構築していく。もう一方で姿勢監視スターカメラのデータ処理・フライトデータ解析を立ち上げ、フライト時の望遠鏡の姿勢を再構成していく。

    Although there has been a longstanding interest in studying high-energy neutrinos produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), collider neutrinos were not directly detected. In this research, we have established a new experiment to detect these neutrinos in the uncharted energy region and investigate their properties for the first time. By analyzing the data of the 2018 pilot detector installed 480-m downstream of the proton-proton interaction point, we observed the first neutrino interaction candidates at the LHC, opening a new avenue for studying neutrinos from current and future high-energy colliders. In parallel, we have established the FASERnu neutrino detector, ready for the physics runs from 2022.

    One of the important issues in muographic research is to reveal the detailed 3-D density structure of volcanoes by increasing the number of observation directions. We performed multi-directional muographic observations to clarify the 3D density structure of the Omuroyama Scoria Hill located in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
    As a result, a high-density region was detected in the interior of the scoria hill. Based on this observation and detailed geomorphological and geological constraints, we inferred that the high-density region consists of a highly fused central crater and radial veins extending in three directions from it. The results of this study demonstrate that the formation process of volcanoes can be discussed in detail by visualizing the three-dimensional internal structure of volcanoes with unprecedented resolution.

    Using nuclear emulsion film with excellent spatial resolution, we have realized a gamma-ray telescope with a large area and a wide viewing angle (from the zenith to 45 degrees zenith angle), and performed observation of cosmic gamma rays at the top layer of the atmosphere.
    In 2018, observations in Australia using a telescope with an aperture area of 0.38 m^2 successfully imaged the known bright gamma-ray object Vela pulsar, and confirmed the improvement of angular resolution from the Fermi-LAT detector currently operated by NASA using real celestial data, which is one order of magnitude in the projection angle (two orders of magnitude for the solid angle). Furthermore, we have developed and realized a large-area telescope equipped with multiple 1.25 m^2 telescope units, and have begun scientific observations in 2023.

    超高解像度の原子核乾板により、宇宙の暗黒物質の衝突によって生じる~100nm長の反跳原子飛跡をとらえ、反跳方向の偏りを検出する事により、暗黒物質の直接検出を行う実験を推進している。
    本研究では、原子核乳剤製造装置を、LNGS地下に設置し、乳剤の製造・塗布・照射・現像を地下で一貫して行う体制を構築、低BGで背景事象の理解を進める。また並行して解析システム系の実装・運用を行い100 g級実験を遂行、世界初となる方向感度を持った探索による暗黒物質への制限を与えると共に、DAMA実験が信号を捕らえたとクレームしている領域をカバーする本格物理実験への課題を洗い出す。
    今年度は、LNGS地下で建設中のNEWSdm実験地下ファシリティの整備、低BG環境の構築を継続しておこなった。またグランサッソー地下へ持ち込む乳剤製造装置の制作・組み立てを名古屋でおこなった。
    中性子BGの計測関連では、HTS搭載による反跳飛跡検出アルゴリズムの高速化を図った。暗黒物質プロトタイプ実験に関しては、グランサッソー地下で10g規模の照射を行い現状のバックグラウンドレベルを測定した。また並行して信号/バックグラウンド選別に関して、過度の定着により、信号の飛跡は消滅するが、バックグラウンドは消えないことを確認し、この特徴を用いて逆に信号/バックグラウンドを選別するという手法を新たに発明し、方向性探索において世界最高感度を達成できる見込を得て、現在その評価を行っているところである。

    2018年4月に予定されているオーストラリア・アリススプリングスでの気球実験にむけて、観測器の改良および準備を進めた。
    タイムスタンパーとなるエマルション多段シフターについては、低エネルギー粒子に対する電磁散乱による影響や飛跡を再構成する際の不定性を小さくするために、金属ステージの開口部を最大化する改造を施すとともに、実装するエマルションフィルムの真空パックに関しては剛性を高めるとともに段間ギャップを短くするために炭素繊維強化プラスチックの背板を実装する検討を行った。真空包装機を導入するとともに、炭素繊維強化プラスチックの板がエマルションフィルムに対して化学的悪影響を及ぼさないことを確認する加速テストを進めた。
    与圧容器については、将来の大面積化への拡張性を持たせるために、前回気球実験では円形だったジュラルミン製の主構造体を、エマルション望遠鏡実装部となる直線部分を含むレーストラック形状にする設計変更を行い、それに伴い球形だった圧力保持薄膜の形状を繭型に設計変更し、主構造体および薄膜の強度計算や構成要素の強度テストを進めた。

    The dark matter problem in the universe is the most important subject in physics, and "dark matter search experiment using nuclear emulsion detector" has sensitivity in the direction of arrival, so it is considered to play an important role in the elucidation. On the other hand, in order to realize this, it is necessary to develop a high-speed and high-resolution microscope system capable of reading an ultrafine grain nuclear emulsion. In this study, we developed the analysis system technology required for analysis of the pilot experiments using kilogram-scale nuclear emulsion detectors. Specifically, we carried out acceleration of image processing using GPU, development of light source for suppression of vibration in image acquisition leading to deterioration of track recognition, improved direction sensitivity by new image processing algorithm, study of identification method of background event caused by contamination.

    We developed cosmic-ray muon radiography with nuclear emulsion. Cosmic-ray muon radiography is a non-destructive inspection for large scale structures. We developed basic technologies and conducted the experiment for several targets. As a result, we achieved the following results. 1. Discovery of unknown big void inside the Khufu’s Pyramid at Cairo in Egypt. 2. Demonstration of imaging of lower part of Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant. 3. Demonstration of imaging of hollow floor plate. These results validated the methodology of application of several targets (archaeology, industrial plant, civil engineering).

  13. Study of Neutrino by OPERA experiment -Summary and study on cosmic-ray event-

    OPERA is an experiment to confirm the existence of neutrino oscillation, i.e. existence of neutrino mass, by detecting tau neutrino appearance. From 2000, we started the detector and beam line construction, did beam exposure from 2006 to 2012, have been performing event analysis until today. In 2015, we detected the fifth event and reached to the statistical significance of 5.1σlevel meaning the discovery level. From 2016, by applying looser cut and including the boarder events, the signal number reaches to 10 events with the expected background of 2.0±0.4. The reached significance level is 6.1σ. OPERA has finished the main analysis by this paper although continuing technological R&D using real events for electron neutrino detection and so on for future neutrino experiments.
