This paper investigates the effects of a public intermediate good on trade patterns and the gains from trade, in a two-country, three-sector overlapping generations model. The main results of this paper are as follows. First, the country with a higher level of a public intermediate good (produced labor-intensively) imports an investment good (produced capital-intensively) if this country saves less than the other country. We conduct simulations in three prefectures in the Tokai region in Japan based on Shindo (2008) which is an extension of Bouzahzah et al. (2002) who specified the human capital growth rates as a function of time invested in education and simulated the case of Europe. The main result of this paper is that, depending on the initial structure of physical capital and the growth rate, prefectures take different growth paths.
