    原生代末期から古生代最初期のカンブリア紀にかけ、大規模な氷期イベントの終了後、多細胞動物の出現と急速な進化が行われた。しかし地質・古生物記録の乏しさから、その実態に関してはほとんどが未解明である。当研究では、モンゴル西部地域の連続するエディアカラ系~下部カンブリア系連続層序などをターゲットに、氷期からカンブリア紀前期に至る生物進化事変を実証的に明らかにすることを目標とする。特に動物体の行動の化石である生痕化石、小型有殻化石、堆積岩の化学分析に基づく環境復元に焦点を当て、多細胞動物(特に左右相称動物)の初期進化の実態の解明と、より確実なデータに基づく当時の生態系の復元を目指す。
    モンゴル西部Bayan Gol渓谷に分布するエディアカラ系・下部カンブリア系の基本的な地質調査、古生物調査を行った。従来の資料と炭素同位体測定データと今回の資料から得られるデータを比較することにより、このセクションのほぼ完全な層序と炭素同位体変動を把握することが可能になると期待される。
    Bayan Gol渓谷のZuun-Arts層下部(エディアカラ系)のバージェス頁岩タイプの堆積岩より、藻類化石 (Chinggiskhaania bifurcata) が発見された。この種は以前我々のグループにより、Bayan Golから約60 km北方のZuun Artsの同層準の頁岩より発見、記載されていたが、新たな発見から、おそらくモンゴルのエディアカラ紀の海にこの種が広く分布していたこと、しかし中国の同時代の多様な藻類相と比較して非常に少ない種数しか生存していなかった可能性が高いことが示された。
    2018年度に調査したモンゴル北方のKhovsgol湖西岸地域に分布するエディアカラ系・下部カンブリア系の連続資料(特にその中上部)の炭素同位体分析、主要な元素分析を行った。その結果、おそらくKhesen層の上部にPC/C境界が存在すること、Khesen層下部に砕屑物や金属元素が多く供給されたこと、Khesen層下部で硫黄と全炭素の増大することが示された。Khesen層下部では海水環境が嫌気的に変化した可能性、金属元素の供給増大によって海底・海中の動物活動の活発化し、底質の嫌気的環境がもたらされた可能性が示唆された。
    モロッコ西部のTaroudant南方のエディアカラ系・カンブリア系のセクションを調査し、古生物学の予察的な結果を得ることが出来た。モロッコのセクションは従来炭素同位体層序などが研究されているが、今後エディアカラ紀からカンブリア紀初期にかけての生命進化に関する成果が期待される。
    モンゴル西部のBayan Gol地域の基本的な地質、層序の調査、モンゴル北部のKhovsgol地域の調査と地球科学的分析を行い、地質図の完成、連続層序の把握を行うことができたと共に、動物多様度上昇と堆積環境の変化との関連について予察的ながら議論を行うことが可能となった。カンブリア紀の海洋動物多様性爆発に関する、より一般的、広範な議論を構築するべく、さらなる調査と分析が進行中である。またモロッコ西部のTaroudant地域のパイロット的な調査から今後の研究の新たな展開が得られる可能性が示された。従来の研究結果に関してはその一部を国際誌に発表し、また2020年度の学会で発表、学術誌に投稿する予定である。このように2019年度は十分な研究成果を得ることができ、当研究は順調に進行していると判断される。
    2020年度はモンゴル西部のBayan Gol地域、またはその周辺地域の調査を行う。ここでは頻繁に出現する微生物岩(ストロマトライト等)や生痕に関する調査を継続的に行う。また従来採集した試料の分析(地球化学的分析、微化石の抽出)をさらにすすめ、堆積環境や古生物学に関する総合的なデータを得ることを目指す。
    2020年度は新コロナウィルス感染拡大により海外調査が不可能となる可能性もあり、当課題に関連する別の調査と研究も行うことも考慮中である。具体的には、カンブリア爆発と比較対象とされる、古生代末の大量絶滅後の(三畳紀初期の)海洋底生動物の回復現象と海洋環境変遷を調査研究することを計画中である。実際には宮崎県高千穂地域の上村石灰岩、宮城県本吉町の平磯層の下部三畳系を調査し、それに含まれる底生動物の多様性変動、古生物分類群ごとのサイズの変遷と地球環境的な変遷とを明らかにし、多様性とサイズがどのような回復現象を見せるのか、そしてそれはどのような環境因子によって影響されているのかを明らかにしていきたい。さらに先カンブリア時代に豊富に出現していたストロマトライト等の微生物岩が三畳紀初期に再出現する理由を考察したい。これらの結果はカンブリア爆発の原因を探るうえで有用なデータとなる。
    これらの研究のうち、新たな結果が得られたものから、国内外の学会で発表すると共に、国際誌に投稿、発表を行う。

    Two species of fossil algae were discovered from the Ediacaran of Zuun Arts, western Mongolia. The beds that contained these algae were concluded as special type of sedimentary rock known as "Burgess-type deposit" based on the chemical analysis and the mode of preservation. In addition, vertical trace fossils were discovered from the Ediacaran of Bayan Gol gorge. These trace fossils show U-shape that penetrate down to 4cm below the uppermost opening, suggesting that the producer was a bilaterian animal that was elongate in form and could burrow deep into the sediment, thus possessed ample musculature. Also this burrow suggests existence of predatory animals. This discovery was contradictory to the existing interpretation about Ediacaran life, firstly giving possible evidence of the existence of bilaterian animals and also predatory animals.

    Following paleoecological studies have been conducted about crinoids (Echinodermata), the representative deep-sea sessile animals. By examining morphology and carbon isotope of the skeletons, Cretaceous stalked crinoids from South Dakota and Hokkaido are concluded as a member of cold seep environment. By an experimental taphonomy and observation of postures of fossil stalked crinoids, a new method can be found about detecting existence and absence of musculature in the arms. About the predation pressure of comatulid crinoids received from their predators, it is successfully found that quantitative data could be obtained and compared by measuring the frequency of regenerated arms of these crinoids form northwestern Pacific, northeastern Pacific and north Atlantic.

  7. Paleoecological study on the recovery and adaptive radiation of benthic invertebrate faunas after the mass extinctions

    In order to clarify how the benthic organisms recovered and how the new taxonomic groups appeared after the mass extinctions, paleoecological work has been done on the two case studies, one after the P-T, and the other after the end-Cretaceous mass extinctions. Up to now, following results have been obtained.
    1.In order to measure the diversity change of benthic faunas before the P-T mass extinction, trace fossils in the Late Permian (Changsingian) offshore fades of Kitakami Mountains in northern Japan were examined. As a result, it was suggested that the diversity of benthic faunas had already been low prior to the P-T boundary.
    2.In order to clarify the diversity recovery of benthic faunas in the Early Triassic, siliciclastic fades of Kitakami Mountains were examined. The Smithian fauna from this fades showed pandemic but low-diversity community, and this Japanese example has predated other occurrences of similar fauna from north America and south Asia.
    It is important to know the long-tern predator-prey interaction, especially when and how strong durophagous predators appeared.
    We surveyed 21 formations (9 Mesozoic and 12 Cenozoic formations) consisting of shallow-water deposits in Japan to detect whether these formations contain angular-shaped fragments of bivalves and gastropods. Mesozoic formations rarely contained such angular fragments of bivalves and gastropods, and only one example containing such angular fragments was observed from the late Cretaceous. On the other hand, there were abundant angular shell fragments from the Cenozoic formations. We also conducted experiments of mechanical abrasion of shells by using a tumbling barrel, in order to see if such mechanical damage would produce angular shell fragments, the kind we see in the shallow-water deposits. The results of tumbling barrel showed that such abraded shells never show angularly broken shapes. As a result of the field survey and the tumbling experiments, it has been clarified that the angular shell fragments were produced by durophagous predators, and such predatory activity has become intensified since the beginning of the Cenozoic, after the K-T mass extinction.

  8. Origin and evolution of echinoderm pentamery, a combined paleontological and molecular biological approach

    Echinoderms constitute one of the invertebrate animal phyla that originated in the Cambrian and survived to the Recent seas. The phylum is characterized by the pentamerous symmetry in the adult body plan. The purpose of this project has been to clarify when and how this character evolved, as well as its functional significance, from the viewpoints of paleontology, embryology and molecular biology.
    1. Fossil records ; Because the late pre-Cambrian Tribrachidium has trimerous symmetry, some researchers consider that trimery presedes pentamery in echinoderms. However, it is dubious that Tribrachidium is an echinoderm. It is known that Cambrian echinoderms already had pentamerous symmetry. The pentamerous pattern of Cambrian echinoderms is in fact the '2-1-2 pattern', in which two of the three branches branches into two to make five branches. This pattern is wide spread in later echinoderms, therefore, it is reasonable to consider that the true pentamerous pattern evolved from the 2-1-2 pattern.
    2. Embryology ; In the development of echinoderms, pentamerous symmetry first appear when the water vascular system is formed and where the water vascular system is segmented into five projections. Detailed observation of the development of water vascular systems is therefore important to understand the mechanisms of the formation of pentamerous symmetry.
    3. Molecular biology ; It is not yet known what kind of genes control the formation of pentamerous body plan. From the known significance of homeogenes in body plan formation, it is not too much a speculation to consider that homeogenes are involved in the making of pentamery in echinoderms. In this study, DNA primers have been designed to PCR amplify a region of homeobox of some echinoids. As a result, some target DNA fragments have successfully amplified. The relationship between the expression of homeogenes and the formation of pentamery is now being investigated.
