    We investigate the electronic band structure and Fermi surfaces (FSs) of Cr2AlC single crystals with angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy. We evidence hole bands centered around the M points and electron bands centered around the Gamma point in reciprocal space. Electron and hole bands exhibit an open, tubular structure along the c axis, confirming the quasi-two-dimensional character of this highly anisotropic, nanolamellar compound. Dependence of the photoionization cross sections on beam light polarization and orientation allows us to assess the orbital character of each observed band locally. Despite some differences, density functional theory calculations show a good agreement with experiment.

    <p>Layered MAX phases are the parent materials of MXenes, which have recently attracted attention as a new atomic layer system and are known as industrial materials for applications due to their excellent properties that combine the characteristics of both metals and ceramics. On the other hand, the bulk electronic structure of MAX phase has primarily been studied by computational methods, mainly because of lack of well-characterized single crystals. In this review, I will show the anomalous electronic states such as Dirac points and line nodes, which have been observed by the recent electronic structure studies in MAX phase single-crystals using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and are expected to lead to the emergence of unique topological quantum transport in this system.</p>

    <p>As Au(001) surfaces exhibit a quasi-one-dimensional corrugated structure, Hex-Au(001), its periodicity was predicted to change the electronic structure of graphene when graphene was grown on this surface. Furthermore, the hybridization between graphene and Au is known to introduce bandgap and spin polarization into graphene. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation of graphene on a Hex-Au(001) surface. A bandgap of 0.2 eV in the graphene Dirac cone was observed at the crossing point of the graphene Dirac cone and Au 6sp bands, indicating that the origin of the bandgap formation was the hybridization between the graphene Dirac cone and Au 6sp band. We discussed the hybridization mechanism and anticipated spin injection into the graphene Dirac cone.</p>

    Hall transport and non-collinear magnetoresistance (NCMR) are studied for a chiral antiferromagnet (AFM) with the filled β-Mn-type structure. Magnetic and transport properties of epitaxial thin films of Co2-xPdxMo3N revealed that, in addition to a canted antiferromagnetic behavior above room temperature, thin films with x = 1.01∼1.38 exhibited a transition to a spin spiral state with a higher magnetic moment below TSR of around 50 K, which was assigned to a spin reorientation transition. The low-temperature phase shows both large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and topological Hall effect (THE). Upon the transition to the canted AFM phase existing up to room temperature, the large AHE still persists with vanishing THE. The behavior of the Hall transport properties coupled with NCMR signals in the current-perpendicular-to-the plane configuration shows the formation of topological spin textures with locally antiferromagnetic order. The present results open the way for the study of topological antiferromagnetic spin textures, manipulation of their properties, and for future spintronic applications.

  10. Band gap opening in graphene by hybridization with Au (001) reconstructed surfaces

    Au(001) surfaces exhibit a complex reconstructed structure [Hex-Au(001)] comprising a hexagonal surface and square bulk lattices, yielding a quasi-one-dimensional corrugated surface. When graphene was grown on this surface, the periodicity of the corrugated surface was predicted to change the electronic structure of graphene, forming bandgaps and new Dirac points. Furthermore, the graphene-Au interface is promising for bandgap generation and spin injection due to band hybridization. Here, we report the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculation of graphene on a Hex-Au(001) surface. The crossing point of the original and replica graphene πbands showed no bandgap, suggesting that the one-dimensional potential was too small to modify the electronic structure. A bandgap of 0.2 eV was observed at the crossing point of the graphene πand Au 6sp bands, indicating that the bandgap is generated using hybridization of the graphene πand Au 6sp bands. We discussed the hybridization mechanism and concluded that the R30 configuration between graphene and Au and an isolated electronic structure of Au are essential for effective hybridization between graphene and Au. We anticipate that hybridization between graphene πand Au 6sp would result in spin injection into graphene.

    The magnetic phase diagram and topological Hall effect (THE) are studied by magnetization and transport measurements for chiral antiferromagnet (AFM) Co2-x Pdx Mo3N ( x = 0-1.61) thin films with the filled β-Mn-type chiral structure, which reveals the rich phase diagram in the temperature versus Pd content x plane, where a collinear AFM, a canted AFM, and a low-temperature phase below 50 K are found to exist. For thin films with x = 1.01-1.61, the low-temperature phase shows prominent THE. The formation of the canted AFM phase with the Néel temperature up to 325 K is observed with vanishing THE. These findings establish the chiral antiferromagnetic molybdenum nitrides as a fertile playground for exploring the interplay between chiral antiferromagnetism, topological spin textures, and novel magnetotransport phenomena.

    The electronic structure of single-crystalline EuO (100) ultrathin films, together with their exchange splitting energy (ΔEEX) and ferromagnetic phase transition temperature (TC), was investigated by temperature- and thickness-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Both ΔEEX and TC decreased monotonically with decreasing film thickness. The band shift showed an opposite thickness dependence at the Γ and X points, reflecting the balance of the hybridization between the Eu 4f and O 2p states (super-exchange interaction) and between the Eu 4f, O 2p, and Eu 5d states (indirect-exchange interaction). The observed transition from an indirect energy gap in the bulk to a direct gap in the ultrathin films of the ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO could be potential in future spintronic devices.

    Herein we show that Mo4Ce4Al7C3, a recently discovered nanolamellar compound displaying mixed valence, combines Kondo lattice behavior with ferromagnetism. A sizeable magnetization is carried by 3p states of Al as evidenced by a strong x-ray magnetic circular dichroism signal at the K edge of aluminum, whereas no detectable signal was observed at the K edge of carbon and L2,3 edges of molybdenum. These results point out that the ferromagnetic behavior originates in the Ce atoms with 4f1 electronic configuration lying within the Al planes. The evolution with pressure of the mixed valence of Ce atoms in the Mo-C planes determined via Ce L3 x-ray-absorption spectra along with the magnetoresistance measurements across the ferromagnetic transition unambiguously reveal a Kondo behavior. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory confirm a certain degree of Ce 4f electron delocalization. More generally, conduction electrons are not restricted to lie in the MoC planes but are also delocalized in the Al planes.

    An in-depth study of the Fermi surface and electronic structure of the ternary nanolamellar carbide Ti3SiC2 is reported. The outputs of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measured on single crystals and density functional theory calculations are systematically compared. The band structure is found to be dominated by Ti d orbitals near the Fermi level. Band inversions near K points are responsible for the intricate shape of the Ti3SiC2 pockets. Previous theory found that those pockets were giving opposite contributions leading to zero thermoelectric power in polycrystalline samples. Here we directly visualize them by ARPES, describe their precise shape, and examine the way they should behave regarding thermoelectric power. The presence of linear band crossings and the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the near Fermi level electronic structure are discussed, as well as potential consequences for magnetotransport and spin Hall effect.

    We show that boron-doped epitaxial graphene can be successfully grown by thermal decomposition of a boron carbide thin film, which can also be epitaxially grown on a silicon carbide substrate. The interfaces of B4C on SiC and graphene on B4C had a fixed orientation relation, having a local stable structure with no dangling bonds. The first carbon layer on B4C acts as a buffer layer, and the overlaying carbon layers are graphene. Graphene on B4C was highly boron doped, and the hole concentration could be controlled over a wide range of 2 1013 to 2 1015 cm-2. Highly boron-doped graphene exhibited a spin-glass behavior, which suggests the presence of local antiferromagnetic ordering in the spin-frustration system. Thermal decomposition of carbides holds the promise of being a technique to obtain a new class of wafer-scale functional epitaxial graphene for various applications.

    The nanolamellar M2AC or carbon-based "211 MAX" phases, where M is an early transition metal, A belongs to groups 13-15, and C is carbon, can be described by rigid band models. The same band model applies to all possible A elements belonging to a given group of the periodic table. Changing M for a given A is then equivalent to shifting the Fermi energy EF through a band structure common to all phases in the group. This is shown by comparing predictions of density functional theory (DFT) to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. In particular, the Fermi surface of a given Al-based MAX phase can be obtained with an acceptable degree of accuracy by simply selecting the appropriate ARPES isoenergy surface of another Al-based phase. In V2AlC, and in addition to conventional metal energy bands, both DFT and ARPES show the existence of a gapped nodal line located around 0.2 eV below EF or complex crossing points at EF with Dirac-like features in some directions. Application of the rigid band model suggests that these topological features as well as others, also predicted by DFT, can be positioned at or close to EF by an appropriate choice of M and A, or by using an appropriate combination of various M and A elements.

    We developed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy system for the analysis of conduction band electrons. By forming a negative electron affinity surface on a semiconductor surface, electrons in conduction bands are emitted into a vacuum and measured by using an analyzer. This method enables us to determine the energy and momentum of the conduction electrons. Furthermore, it can be used to determine unoccupied conduction band structures. The main challenges of this method are that the energies of the emitted electrons are extremely low and the trajectories of the electrons change due to various influences. We overcame these problems by placing the shielding mesh close to the sample and parallel to the sample surface. The entire chambers, including the shielding mesh, were grounded, and a negative bias voltage was applied only to the sample. This configuration realizes the acceleration of electrons while preserving the momentum component parallel to the sample surface. Another problem is the establishment of a method for converting a detected angle into the corresponding wavevector. We focused on the emission angle of electrons emitted from a sample and their minimum energy and then established an analytical method for converting detected angles into corresponding wavevectors on the basis of the minimum energy.     For understanding of carrier behavior in semiconductors, it is important to measure the carrier relaxation time. In the present study, the relaxation times of inter-valley transition from the valley to the X valley in GaP were evaluated by near-band-gap photoemission spectroscopy of electrons emitted from a surface with a negative electron affinity state. In the energy distribution curves, two peaks, which originate from the electron population accumulated in the valley and the X valley, were observed. From the temperature dependence of the energy of these two peaks, we could successfully evaluate the temperature dependence of the energies of the valley and the X valley. Furthermore, the relaxation times of the inter-valley transition from the valley to the X valley were estimated from the ratio of the electron concentration of the valley and the X valley. The values of the relaxation time are good agreement with the previous studies. These results indicate that the near-band-gap photoemission spectroscopy can directly investigate conduction electrons and also evaluate the carrier dynamics in semiconductor. (C) 2017 Author(s).

    This study has been aimed at the realization of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements by utilizing linear/circularly polarized microfocus VUVSX synchrotron light at AichiSR and the exploration of novel topological-materials. For the former, the polarization-dependent VUVSX synchrotron radiation imaging spectroscopy system in Aichi SR is limited for fixed photon energy, owing to the beam instability as remaining issue. For the latter, we found the existence of spin-polarization tangential to the Fermi surface with Rashba-type spin-splitting on the layered MAX phase compound V2AlC and the existence of unique helicoid electronic states on the cubic chiral compound NiSbS.

    We have developed a new spectroscopic research technique “VUVSX-micro-imaging spectroscopy” utilizing micro-focus and elemental selectivity of the VUVSX synchrotron radiation source. We applied the technique to Sm1-xYxS in which existence of the micrometer scale surface domain has been expected and to quasi-one dimensional micrometer size crystal of Ba3Co2O6(CO3)0.7. As results, we have found that the coexistence of localized and itinerant Sm 4f electrons in black-metallic Sm1-xYxS and the narrow band dispersion of t2g AB orbital below the Fermi level originating from the effect of CoO6-CO3 inter-chain interactions in Ba3Co2O6(CO3)0.7.

    This research is aimed to develop novel magnetotransport properties in antiferromagnets and skyrmions with noncollinear spin structures. By using bilayers of antiferromagnetic Mn3GaN and spin source BiSb, ultra-low-current-density switching of 5X105 A/cm2 was achieved by spin-orbit-torque effect.
    With the use of chiral β-Mn type ferromagnets (Fe2-yPdyMo3N; FPMN) and antiferromagnets (Co2-yPdyMo3N; CPMN), attention was paid to the Pd content in terms of controling Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction. In ferromagnetic FPMN, formation of skyrmions with small size of 60 nm and high-Tc of 600 ℃ was identified by topological Hall effect, Lorentz-TEM, and XMCD spectroscopy. In antiferromagnetic CPMN, the room-temperature canted antiferromagnetic phase was found, and through the magnetic phase transition, the low-temperature ferrimagnetic phase appeared. By using AHE, THE, and noncollinear magnetoresistance, possible formation of room-temperature antiferromagnetic skyrmion was suggested.

    We have developed a new spectroscopic research technique “micrometer function imaging” for “Fermiology” of strongly correlated electron systems, at the micro-focus vacuum-ultraviolet synchrotron angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy beamline BL7U(@UVSOR-II). When we applied the technique to the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor (TMTSF)2PF6, where the radiation damage and the surface domains disturb the intrinsic “Fermiology” research, we have successfully observed the Luttinger surface formed by the quasi-particle dispersion, which is suggestive of the strong electron-phonon interactions.
