The mid-latitude westerly winds of the Southern Hemisphere play a central role in the global climate system via Southern Ocean upwelling 1 , carbon exchange with the deep ocean 2 , Agulhas leakage (transport of Indian Ocean waters into the Atlantic) 3 and possibly Antarctic ice-sheet stability 4 . Meridional shifts of the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds have been hypothesized to occur 5,6 in parallel with the well-documented shifts of the intertropical convergence zone 7 in response to Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) events— abrupt North Atlantic climate change events of the last ice age. Shifting moisture pathways to West Antarctica 8 are consistent with this view but may represent a Pacific teleconnection pattern forced from the tropics 9 . The full response of the Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation to the DO cycle and its impact on Antarctic temperature remain unclear 10 . Here we use five ice cores synchronized via volcanic markers to show that the Antarctic temperature response to the DO cycle can be understood as the superposition of two modes: a spatially homogeneous oceanic ‘bipolar seesaw’ mode that lags behind Northern Hemisphere climate by about 200 years, and a spatially heterogeneous atmospheric mode that is synchronous with abrupt events in the Northern Hemisphere. Temperature anomalies of the atmospheric mode are similar to those associated with present-day Southern Annular Mode variability, rather than the Pacific–South American pattern. Moreover, deuterium-excess records suggest a zonally coherent migration of the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds over all ocean basins in phase with Northern Hemisphere climate. Our work provides a simple conceptual framework for understanding circum-Antarctic temperature variations forced by abrupt Northern Hemisphere climate change. We provide observational evidence of abrupt shifts in the Southern Hemisphere westerly winds, which have previously documented 1–3 ramifications for global ocean circulation and atmospheric carbon dioxide. These coupled changes highlight the necessity of a global, rather than a purely North Atlantic, perspective on the DO cycle.

The Southeastern Greenland Dome (SE-Dome) has both a high elevation and a high accumulation rate (1.01 m we yr−1), which are suitable properties for reconstructing past environmental changes with a high time resolution. For this study, we measured the major ion fluxes in a 90 m ice core drilled from the SE-Dome region in 2015 and present the records of annual ion fluxes from 1957 to 2014. From 1970 to 2010, the trend of nonsea-salt (nss) SO42− flux decreases, whereas that for NH4+ increases, tracking well with the anthropogenic SOx and NH3 emissions mainly from North America. The result suggests that these fluxes reflect histories of the anthropogenic SOx and NH3 emissions. In contrast, the decadal trend of NO3− flux differs from the decreasing trend of anthropogenic NOx emissions. Although the cause of this discrepancy remains unclear, it may be related to changes in particle formation processes and chemical scavenging rates caused by an increase in sea salt and dust and/or a decrease in nssSO42−. We also find a high average NO3− flux (1.13 mmol m−2 yr−1) in the ice core, which suggests a negligible effect from postdepositional NO3− loss. Thus, the SE-Dome region is an excellent location for reconstructing nitrate fluxes. Over a decadal time scale, our NO3− flux record is similar to those from other ice cores in Greenland high-elevation sites, suggesting that NO3− concentration records from these ice cores are reliable.

    A precise age scale based on annual layer counting is essential for investigating past environmental changes from ice core records. However, subannual scale dating is hampered by the irregular intraannual variabilities of oxygen isotope (delta O-18) records. Here we propose a dating method based on matching the delta O-18 variations between ice core records and records simulated by isotope-enabled climate models. We applied this method to a new delta O-18 record from an ice core obtained from a dome site in southeast Greenland. The close similarity between the delta O-18 records from the ice core and models enables correlation and the production of a precise age scale, with an accuracy of a few months. A missing delta O-18 minimum in the 1995/1996 winter is an example of an indistinct delta O-18 seasonal cycle. Our analysis suggests that the missing delta O-18 minimum is likely caused by a combination of warm air temperature, weak moisture transport, and cool ocean temperature. Based on the age scale, the average accumulation rate from 1960 to 2014 is reconstructed as 1.02 m yr(-1) in water equivalent. The annual accumulation rate shows an increasing trend with a slope of 3.6 mm yr(-1), which is mainly caused by the increase in the autumn accumulation rate of 2.6 mm yr(-1). This increase is likely linked to the enhanced hydrological cycle caused by the decrease in Arctic sea ice area. Unlike the strong seasonality of precipitation amount in the ERA reanalysis data in the southeast dome region, our reconstructed accumulation rate suggests a weak seasonality.

    地球温暖化に関連して、北大西洋高緯度域における深層水の沈み込みが減少し、大西洋の海洋大循環が弱まっていることが指摘されている。この変動は、北大西洋の一部で水温の上昇が起こっていない海域として検出され始めている。しかし、深層水変動の直接観測は過去20年程度しかなく、気候シミュレーションや長期間の古気候データを復元した研究では異なった見解が示され、空間的に広範囲の古気候データの必要性が指摘されている。このような背景を踏まえ、本研究では、グリーンランドで掘削されたアイスコアの酸素・水素同位体比を超高精度で分析することで周辺海域の過去約200年間分の海面水温データを得ることを目指す。

    本研究では、光吸収強度の高い中赤外領域と光共振器で感度を飛躍的に向上させたレーザー光吸収分光法を用いて、存在比の極めて低い多重置換同位体分子の光吸収量を測定して同位体分子の存在比を直接分析する手法を開発する。二酸化炭素を第一の目標として、存在比がppmレベルの多重置換同位体CO2分子を、少量試料で高精度に分析できる手法の開発を目指す。本手法により、微量試料測定・連続モニタリング・その場分析などが可能となり、原子力工学のみならず、エネルギー工学、薬学、地球惑星科学、歴史学などへの展開も考えられ、多重置換同位体分子の超高感度分析を基盤とした新たな学術の創生につながると期待できる。

    長期間の気候変動データは、日射量等の変化に対する気候システムの応答を理解することに加え、気候シミュレーションの予測精度の向上のためにも必須といえる。近年、洞窟の鍾乳石の一種である石筍を用いた気候復元の研究が急速に拡大している。しかし、日本においては、大型の石筍が少なく、連続的なデータを得ることが困難であった。そこで、本計画では、洞窟内において、フローストーンと呼ばれる鍾乳石を掘削することで、連続かつ高時間分解能な気候変動データの取得を目指す。掘削したコアの安定同位体比や流体包有物の分析によって、過去の日本地域における気候変動の実態とその変動メカニズムを解明する。

    本研究の目的は1)高涵養量のためエアロゾルが変質を受けない特別な地域でアイスコアを掘削し、世界で最も確度の高い過去200年間のエアロゾルのデータベースを公開すること、2)アイスコアの最新の分析技術を駆使し、過去200年間のエアロゾルの変遷をもたらした大気化学プロセスを解明することである。これらの成果は確度の高いデータベースの提供することで環境変動予測の高度化に寄与し、その結果としてIPCCなどグローバルな環境政策に貢献する。
    2018年度は7月の採択後、計画の通りに2020年春の掘削に向けたロジスティクスの準備をした。2019年度内にベースキャンプとなるグリーンランドタシーラクへの輸送を完了させるため、ロジスティクス会社の選定・交渉をした。その結果、タシーラクから現地へのヘリコプターオペレーションを含む、2019年度・2020年度のロジスティクスプランを構築した。掘削に必要な物資の調達を始めており、これは2019年度も引き続き続けていく。あわせて、掘削に必要な掘削機の手配を始めた。
    2018年11月に共同研究者(分担者及び連携研究者)を集めて、研究集会を開催した。濃密な議論を行い、計画書では250mとしていたアイスコア掘削を300mと目標設定を高めることとなった。かなりチャレンジングな目標設定ではあるが、これは共同研究者らがこのアイスコア掘削プロジェクトに対する期待の大きさの裏付けともいえる。2019年度、期待に沿えるよう全力を尽くし、掘削準備を続けていく。
    2015年に採取した90mのアイスコアを用いた成果公開を続けた。2018年度は有機エアロゾルであるレボグルコ酸が森林火災の指標になることなどの成果を国際紙で公開した。
    計画書(申請書の年次計画)のとおりに掘削準備が順調に進んでいるため。
    300m掘削機の購入をすすめる。あわせて、航空機チャーターなどのグリーンランド南東ドームへのロジスティクスをすすめる。特に、2019年度中に日本からグリーンランドへの物資の輸送を完了させ、2020年春の掘削に備える。グリーンランドでの掘削シーズンは春である。申請者らは南東ドーム周辺をよく熟知し、300m掘削に必要な物資とその輸送・アプローチのノウハウとその困難さを十分理解しており、2019年度は掘削機手配・輸送とロジスティクスの準備期間にあてる。2020年春の掘削には、現有の100m掘削機も合わせて持参し、100m、300mの2本のアイスコアを取得をめざす。現行プロジェクトで採取した90mアイスコアと合わせて、過去60年間は3本のアイスコアを保持することができる。複数のアイスコアを用いることで、アイスコア研究の弱点となるプロキシ記録の代表性の統計的信頼性を高める。申請者らはグリーンランドからのアイスコアの輸送方法にもよく熟知しており、そのノウハウを生かしてアイスコアを日本に輸入する。
    他方で、現有の過去60年間の古環境情報を有するアイスコアの分析・解釈を進め、成果の公開を進める。特に近赤外線反射率、ダスト濃度、 金属濃度、エアロゾルの同位体比、再解析データを用いたエアロゾルと雲核に関する研究を進めていき、これらの研究の中から順次、学術論文 として成果を発信していく。また、全有機炭素分析の開発およびモデル分野への連携を深め、アイスコアが採取されてから迅速に成果を創出できる体制を構築する。

    自然要因による気候変動が人類の文明活動にどのような影響を与えてきたのかを理解するためには長期の気候データが重要である。また、そのような気候データは、気候変動のメカニズムを理解するためにも必要である。しかし、精確な年代をもつ長期間の気候変動データは日本周辺には少ない。本課題では、人類の文明活動と関連が強い完新世における沖縄地域の気候変動を高時間分解能で明らかにすることを目的として、沖縄本島および周辺離島で得た完新世をカバーする石筍試料を用いて研究を行う。特に、高解像度の年代モデルを構築するために、国際共同研究を通じて多くのウラン・トリウム年代測定を実施することで高解像度の気候変動を明らかにすることを主な目的としている。また、本研究を通して、今後の国際的連携推進の基盤となるネットワークを構築する。
    本研究では、精確な長期間の気候変動データを得るために年代軸(X軸)と気温や降水量等の気候指標(Y軸) の両方の分析を並行して進める。今年度は、ウラン・トリウム年代測定を国立台湾大学および南洋理工大学(シンガポール)に滞在して実施した。特に、昨年度にスクリーニングで発見した過去2千年を含む試料について重点的に分析を進めた。また、新しい試料のスクリーニング分析も行った。これらの試料の気温等の指標として石筍の安定同位体比分析を実施した。また、シンガポール滞在時に開催された国際会議で研究成果の報告を行った。
    南陽理工大(シンガポール)・台湾大学でのウラン・トリウム年代測定の実施などはおおむね計画通りに進捗した。しかし、分析装置の故障と修理、移設作業等で同位体比分析は当初計画よりも時間を要した。年度後半の出張計画も遅れた。
    必要なデータはそろいつつあるので、データ解析に重点を移しながら国際共同研究として進める。昨年度末から深刻化した新型コロナウィルスの対策による入国・出国制限があり、今年度の訪問計画は流動的である。分析と解析の方針はすでに合意済みであり、試料はそれぞれの機関に輸送済みなので、訪問できなくても共同研究に必要なU-Th分析の実施は可能ではある。

    Quantitative paleoclimates were decoded from Japanese stalagmite by using newly-developed isotopic methods. This study develops the analytical system of carbonate clumped isotope, which was poorly applied in Japan, and also provides a Delta47-temperature calibration for the first time in Japan. New methods was applied to stalagmites collected from Hiroshima, Mie, and Okinawa. The analyses successfully separate the climate signal of oxygen isotopes into two fractions related with temperature and rainfall amount. The temperature fraction of the stalagmites indicate that air temperature was clearly higher in mid-Holocene than in the present. Unlike the previous studies on Chinese stalagmite, this study does not recognize a strong relationship between the stalagmite oxygen isotopes with the amount of rainfall or with the monsoon intensity.

    The analytical method was simplified by automating valve operations and the data reduction process. We found an issue of isotopic re-equilibration caused by heating the stalagmite and conducted experiments to quantify this effect. This fundamental knowledge is important for future analysis. Although the analysis for the climate reconstruction was delayed by the malfunctions of the isotopic analyzers, we obtained isotopic record of fluid inclusions druing the last deglaciation from a stalagmite in Okinawa region. The temperature reconstruction, based on inclusion analyses, provides a quantitative estimate for the warming during the last deglaciation.

  11. Evaluation of anthropogenic air temperature change by using past aerosols in a Greenlandic ice core.

    The Southeastern Greenland Dome (SE-Dome) has both a high elevation and a high accumulation rate (1.01 m w.e. yr-1), which are suitable properties for reconstructing past environmental changes with a high time resolution. For this study, we measured the major ion fluxes in a 90-m ice core drilled from the SE-Dome region in 2015, and present the records of annual ion fluxes from 1957 to 2014. From 1970 to 2010, the trend of non-sea-salt (nss) SO42- flux decreases, whereas that for NH4+ increases, tracking well with the anthropogenic SOx and NH3 emissions mainly from North America. The result suggests that these fluxes reflect histories of the anthropogenic SOx and NH3 emissions. In contrast, the decadal trend of NO3- flux differs from the decreasing trend of anthropogenic NOx emissions.

    Sulfate aerosols affect Earth’s radiative forcing through direct and indirect effects. Ice core data suggest minor changes in sulfate aerosols over the glacial cycles. However, the variations of source contributions of sulfate aerosols remain unclear. In this project, to estimate the changes in source contributions of sulfate aerosols in Antarctica, we analyzed sulfur isotopic ratios of surface snow and ice core. Sulfur isotope ratio of present-day surface snow over East Antarctica shows that the effects of the transport process are small, and major source of present-day sulfate aerosol is marine biogenic activity. The ice core data show that the sulfur isotopic ratio increased from the last glacial period to Holocene.

    From the analyses of the Dome Fuji ice core, Antarctica, we reconstructed the variations of climatic periodicities, atmospheric composition, greenhouse gases, oxygen/nitrogen ratios, with special focus on deglaciation and global climate variations. In particular, we analyzed oxygen isotopic ratios and dust fluxes of the Dome Fuji ice core over the past 720,000 years and found that climatic instability is largest in middle glacial state. By feeding atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration on an accurate time scale from the Dome Fuji core into a climate-ice sheet model, we suggest that roles of northern hemisphere summer insolation, tilt of Earth's rotation axis and greenhouse gases are different for different deglaciations.

    Most of the terrestrial climate proxies in mid- and low-latitudes region are qualitative. Isotopic compositions of fluid-inclusion water in speleothems are promising tools, because they give quantitative information to reconstruct the past hydrological and temperature changes. Here, we have developed an isotope measurement technique for fluid inclusions in stalagmite, and applied the method to stalagmites in Okinawa, Japan. The developed system can measure the isotope ratios of fluid-inclusion water in nano-liter quantities. Data from the stalagmite samples of the modern and the last glacial period suggest that it is possible to reconstruct the past temperature.

    An ice core was drilled to a depth of 3035 m at the Dome Fuji station in Antarctica. Ice cores contain records of global environmental changes dating back to 720,000 years into the past. The age of the ice core was estimated with high accuracy, and a global standard record of climate and environmental changes was soon published. Further, a study of the mechanism of global environmental changes was developed. Results indicate that sulfate aerosol contributed to temperature change during the glacial-interglacial period. In addition, we clarified that the origin of the sulfate was not only the sea biological activity but also dust.
