With the introduction of the IoT, communication is becoming more diverse. While IoT is becoming more and more widespread, there are some forms of human communication are being lost. The development of self-propelled robots has progressed, and electric and automated wheelchairs are also being utilized. A caregiver was originally required to operate a wheelchair. However, with the advent of IoT wheelchairs, wheelchairs can be operated by wheelchair users only, increasing convenience. On the other hand, wheelchairs have been used as a kind of communication between caregivers and wheelchair users, and the development of IoT wheelchairs has reduced the opportunities for communication between caregivers and wheelchair users. In this paper, we propose a method to reproduce communication scenarios in the following two scenarios using an IoT wheelchair and present the design and implementation of the prototype created.

<p>Dialogue systems that handle emotions have been shown to improve user satisfaction and increase positive interactions, and are expected to play a role as a digital partner that accompanies humans. In order for dialogue systems to recognize user emotions and express their own emotions, emotion regulation methods that select appropriate emotions from the context of the dialogue are indispensable. In this paper, we propose a text-based dialogue framework that performs emotion regulation, which estimates appropriate emotions during response. Our proposed method estimates appropriate emotions by considering the semantic and emotional context of the user’s text, and generates dialogue responses with emotional expressions using a neural network. The effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated through automatic evaluation using an evaluation metrics for the quality of dialogue generation and human evaluation by 100 subjects collected through a crowdsourcing.</p>

Workloads in logistics warehouses have been increasing to meet growing demand, and a labor shortage has become a problem. Utilizing information of laborer locations leads to an increase in productivity. We propose an integrated positioning method using solar-powered Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons. They are easy to install and maintenance-free since they can work without power sources. However, their advertisement interval depends on illuminance and is unstable. Moreover, there are many obstructions in warehouses, such as shelves and products, which cause signal attenuation, interference, and packet losses. We apply particle filters, map matching, and speed prediction with a neural network model to improve robustness and accuracy. We installed 94 beacons in a logistics warehouse. We evaluated the accuracy and found that our method is more accurate than a baseline method.

<p>This paper proposes an indoor localization method for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices using an end-to-end LSTM neural network. We focus on a large-scale indoor space where there is a tough environment for wireless indoor localization due to signal instability. Our proposed method adopts end-to-end localization, which means input is a time-series of signal strength and output is the estimated location at the latest time in the input. The neural network in our proposed method consists of fully-connected and LSTM layers. We use a custom-made loss function with 3 error components: MSE, the direction of travel, and the leap of the estimated location. Considering the difficulty of data collection in a short preparation term, the data generated by a simple signal simulation is used in the training phase, before training with a small amount of real data. As a result, the estimation accuracy achieves an average of 1.92m, using the data collected in GEXPO exhibition in Miraikan, Tokyo. This paper also evaluates the estimation accuracy assuming the troubles in a real operation.</p>

The paper presents a ballroom dance figure classification method with LSTM using video and wearable sensors. Ballroom dance is a popular sport among people regardless of age or sex. However, learning ballroom dance is very difficult for less experienced dancers as it has many complex types of “dance figures”, which is a completed set of footsteps. Therefore, we aim to develop a system to assist dance exercise which gives advice proper to each dance figure characteristic by recognizing dance figures correctly. While the major approach to recognize dance performance is to utilize video, we cannot simply adopt it for ballroom dance because the images of dancers overlap each other. To solve the problem, we propose a hybrid figure recognition method combining video and wearable sensors to enhance its accuracy and robustness. We collect video and wearable sensor data of seven dancers including acceleration, angular velocity, and body parts location change by pose estimation. After that, we preprocess them and put them into an LSTM-based deep learning network. As a result, we confirmed that our approach achieved an F1-score of 0.86 for 13 figure types recognition using the multi-modal sensors with trial-based fivefold cross-validation. We also performed user-based cross-validation, and sliding window algorithms. In addition, we compared the results with our previous method using Random Forest and also evaluated the robustness with occlusions. We found the LSTM-based method worked better than Random Forest with keypoint data. On the other hand, LSTM could not perform well with a sliding window algorithm. We consider the LSTM-based method would work better with a larger dance figure data, which is our next work. In addition, we will investigate how to solve occlusion problems with pose estimation.

Humans observe the behavior of others and exhibit conforming behavior according to the situation. In this study, we propose a method to change the user's walking behavior and attention by changing the ratio of multiple virtual agents in action. We verified whether the attention to a poster on the wall and the walking behavior of a pedestrian changed according to the type and proportion of actions exhibited by multiple agents presented to a particular pedestrian. The results showed that the participant's walking speed and attention to the wall advertisement changed according to the agents' walking behavior, such as deceleration and stopping.

The spread of mobile phones made it easy to estimate person-flow for corporate marketing, crowd analysis, and countermeasures for disaster and disease. However, due to recent privacy concerns, regulations have been tightened around the world and most smartphone operating systems have increased privacy protection. To solve this, in this study, we propose the person-flow estimation technique with preserving privacy. We use 3D People Counter which can record only the time and direction of passing people, a person’s height, and walking speed, therefore it preserves privacy from the moment of collecting data. To estimate people’s in-out data, we propose four methods and they use some of the sensor data above in different combinations. We compared these methods and the height-based method could estimate about 79% of the sensor data as in-out data. Additionally, we also created a system to interpolate in-out data into person-flow data and to visualize it. By using this method, we believe that it can be used for the purposes described in the beginning.

Sharing and analyzing image data from ubiquitous urban cameras must enable us to understand and predict various contexts of the city. Meanwhile, since such image data always contains privacy data such as people and cars, we cannot easily share and analyze the data through the Internet for the viewpoint of privacy protection. As a result, most of urban image data are only kept/shared within the camera owners, or even discarded to reduce risks of privacy data leakage. To solve the privacy problem and accelerate sharing of urban image data, we propose GANonymizer that automatically detects and removes objects related to privacy from the urban images. GANonymizer combines two neural networks: (1) a network which detects objects related to privacy such as persons and cars in an input image using object detection network and (2) a network that removes the detected objects naturally as though they are not exist originally. Through our experiment of applying GANonymizer to urban video images, we confirmed that GANonymizer partially achieved natural removal of objects related to privacy.

A growing trend in smart cities is the use of machine learning techniques to gather city data, formulate learning tasks and models, and use these to develop solutions to city problems. However, although these processes are sufficient for theoretical experiments, they often fail when they meet the reality of city data and processes, which by their very nature are highly distributed, heterogeneous, and exhibit high degrees of spatial and temporal variance. In order to address those problems, we have designed and implemented an integrated development environment called CityFlow that supports developing machine learning applications. With CityFlow, we can develop, deploy, and maintain machine learning applications easily by using an intuitive data flow model. To verify our approach, we conducted two case studies: deploying a road damage detection application to help monitor transport infrastructure and an automatic labeling application in support of a participatory sensing application. These applications show both the generic applicability of our approach, and its ease of use; both critical if we wish to deploy sophisticated ML based applications to smart cities.

Indoor location estimation has long been researched to realize location-based services. In this paper, we propose an indoor location estimation method for Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices using end-to-end LSTM neural network. We focus on large-scale exhibition where is a tough environment for wireless indoor location estimation due to signal strength instability. To achieve higher accuracy, deep learning based methods are proposed rather than trilateration or fingerprint. Existing deep learning based methods estimate the location from the probabilities using the difference of query signal strength and autoencoder-reconstruction of it. Proposed method adopts end-to-end location estimation, which means the neural network takes a time-series of signal strength and outputs the estimated location at the latest time in the input time-series. We also build a loss function which takes how a person walks into account. Considering the difficulty of data collection within a short preparation term of an exhibition, the data generated by a simple simulation is used in the training phase before training with a small amount of real data. As a result, the estimation accuracy is average of 1.92m, using the data collected in GEXPO exhibition in Miraikan, Tokyo. Proposed method outperforms our previous trilateration based method's 4.51m average.

The objective of the study involved developing a rehabilitation support robot for self-standing-up training of hemiplegic stroke patients to restore normal standing-up motion. Based on our previous analysis of the therapist's guiding movements in standing-up training of patients, a passive-type robot was adopted. However, the link weight of the robot acts as a load at the patient's waist. In this work, we designed a counterbalance mechanism for the robot in order to reduce the load at the patient's waist and determined the optimal parameters for the mechanism. We confirmed by simulation that the specifications of the forces acting on the end-effectors of the robots were satisfied, and thus the proposed counterbalance mechanism was effective.

In this paper, we propose a hybrid activity recognition method for ballroom dance exercise using video and wearable sensor. The purpose of our research is to design a mechanism to support ballroom dance exercise, and this paper reports the first part to design a mechanism is to support ballroom dance exercise, and this paper reports the first outcome to achieve the purpose - recognizing ballroom dance exercise. There are two conceivable ways to recognize dance exercise: videos and wearable sensor. However, each of them has its disadvantages. Using video is a good way to recognize the movement of the body. However, it cannot provide us accurate timing or strength of foot actions because the number of their flames per seconds is too small to recognize the fast movements of dancers. On the other hand, while a wearable sensor is good at recognizing foot timing and strength, it is not good at recognizing the movement of the whole body. Therefore we propose a hybrid recognition method utilizing the merits of both video and wearable sensor. This paper focuses to recognize four different types of steps in Latin American, a kind of ballroom dance. For each step, we record wearable sensing data and videos. As a result, it is found that the accuracy of step recognition is improved by adding wearable sensing data to video data shot from two different angles.

Most of the current inertial positioning systems can be categorized as the strapdown algorithm and the step-and-heading approach. However, for the strapdown algorithm using smartphone as a sensor device, the accuracy of the current MEMS based accelerometer are not enough for estimating relative movement. Also, for the step-and-heading approach, robust estimation of step length is always difficult. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end walking speed estimation method using Deep Learning to overcome these problems. By using our method, we can achieve a smartphone PDR with higher accuracy and better robustness to gait type.

This paper proposes a platform, called Kugenuma Happy Board, that strengthens communication among elderly in local community for mutual watch-over among them. The platform motivates users to join the mutual watch-over leveraging health-related data acquired from a personal area network (PAN), sharing selfy pictures of smiley face among community, and gamification techniques including missions, scoring, and rankings. We have conducted an in-the-wild experiment for 10 months in Fujisawa Kanagawa, Japan. The experiment showed that the platform accelerates information sharing thus mutual watch-over among users. Particularly, we have observed that elderly users perceived other users activity from shared information, such as step counts and selfy pictures, thus strengthened human relationship in the local community.

Can we inspect the road condition at a low cost? City infrastructures, such as roads are very important for citizens to their city lives. Roads require constant inspection and repair due to deterioration, but it is expensive to do so with manual labor. Meanwhile, there are official city vehicles, especially garbage trucks that run through the entire area of a city every day and have cameras to record their driving. When we use these cameras, we can watch roads conditions anytime, anywhere. In our study, we focus on these cameras and attempt detecting the road damage, such as road marking blur. To achieve our goal, we explore the new system in this paper. This system adopts the object detection approach that is end-to-end learning and based on deep neural networks, which propose the blur region candidate and detect whether the road markings are blurred or not all at once. In our experiment, first, we obtain the drive recorder video from sanitation engineer and then annotate them. After annotation, we trained our models and calculate the mean average precision to evaluate our models. As a result, our model performs on our collected dataset.

<p>In order to encourage elementary school students unfamiliar with Japanese calligraphy to have an assertive attitude towards acquiring basic calligraphy skills, it is imperative to have an application that provides an environment which allows them to practice calligraphy regardless of the time and place. Due to the fact that this application requires an evaluation system that does not need a calligraphy teacher's assistance, this research proposes a method of automatically evaluating a work of calligraphy. All detected strokes within one sheet will be regarded as an object detection problem, therefore, the entire work's evaluation will depend on the detected strokes. Strokes are a fundamental technique in calligraphy, and are a vital component in creating a work of calligraphy.</p>

Nowadays, humanity generates and contributes to form large and complex datasets, going from documents published on media outlets, posts on social media or location-based information. The generated information tends to be complex, heterogeneous (texts, images, videos, etc.) and is growing at an incredible pace, with much of this data having a strong spatial and temporal focus. This steady increase in the availability of such a volume of information, forces the development of more effective user interfaces that would assist users in efficient visualization, analysis and exploration of the data. This half-day workshop on User Interfaces for Spatial and Temporal Data Analysis (UISTDA) held in conjunction with the IUI2018 conference on March 11th, aimed at sharing the latest progress and developments, current challenges and potential applications for exploiting large amounts of spatial and temporal data. In this paper we provide an overview of the workshop goals together with its main contributions.

Recently, due to the advance and spread of smartphones equipped with various sensors, human beings&#039; inner states such as &quot;busyness&quot; or &quot;tiredness&quot; can be detected more accurately. If people can recognize the factors contributing to their inner states, they will be able to regulate their own emotions and moods by paying attention to those factors. However, the adaptive system for each individual&#039;s diversity that recognize, analyze, and provide the factors contributing to our inner state is not realized. In this research, we propose a system, MyFactor, that accumulates smartphone sensor data and user annotations about inner states to extract and provide information about the important factors contributing to a user&#039;s inner states. In a 111-day experiment with 13 university students, researchers estimated that an &quot;individual model&quot; developed only with the data of each user had a higher predictive accuracy for human inner states than the generic model developed using data from all subjects. In addition, the model with the highest predictive accuracy, trained by a single sensor, performed better and showed the possibility of giving a deeper understanding of human inner states than the model trained using data from all available sensors.

Road maintenance requires local city governments to dedicate a substantial amount of funds in finding and repairing damaged traffic marks and pavements. In developed cities, the total road length is so large that the cost becomes unreasonably high. In this paper, we propose a method of sensing damaged traffic marks from images captured by a camera mounted to a car, for the purpose of reducing road maintenance cost. In particular, we utilized convolutional neural networks (CNN), as well as linear support vector machines (SVM) and Random Forest, in developing a system of damage detection. The experiments used thousands of images captured in the wild and showed that the method can detect damages using CNN with 93% accuracy, at maximum, and at reasonable speed (55 images per second).

Investigating users' interruptibility as an indicator of his/her attention status has been essential in recent pervasive computing where the users' attention resources get scarce against ever increasing amounts of information. In this paper, we address research problems related to the users' available interruptibility, their physical activities, and their current locations and situations. We propose the "Interruptibility Map", a geographical tool for analyzing and visualizing the user's local interruptibility status in the context of smart city research. Our map describes where citizens are expected to feel more or less interruptive against notifications produced by computing devices, which are known to have negative effects on work productivity, emotion, and psychological state. We conducted a continuous analysis from our previous research and a new additional in-the-wild user study for 2 weeks with 29 participants to investigate the relationship between one's interruptibility and their locations and situations. As a highlight of our findings, we found certain pairs of user activity change and a location that showed better interruptibility to users, such as an activity change of "when user's riding car(bus) stops" in the bus commute situation.

© 2017 IEEE. The use of geometric is an alternative framework for robotic locomotion instead of animal-inspired structures. We propose a spiny, multi-pedal robot that uses radial linear actuators as the legs. We developed a unique telescopic slide actuator that has a stroke up to 250% of its minimum length. The default form of the robot is a sphere with variable diameters. The radial arrangement of the telescopic slide actuators allows a large range of shape transformation and processes for rolling. We first show the basic properties of the actuator to verify the ability to elevate and propel the body. The single module of the actuator has a weight of 0.4 kg and can output a force of 25 N maximum. We demonstrate that the robot with twelve spines can change its shape to adapt to a level ground, wall, and rocky surfaces. We also show that the robot can roll on level ground with triangle-based strides. We expect further applications in surveillance and unmanned exploration.

Due to the advance in information and communication technologies, smart cities have become an increasingly appealing vision. One indispensable basis in the research, development and implementation of smart cities is urban sensing technologies, which collect various citywide data that will be processed to generate information for understanding the status of cities. Automotive sensing is a novel urban sensing technology that utilizes the mobility of automobiles to conduct sensing tasks. In a collaborative smart-city project with the city office of Fujisawa City, Japan, we designed and implemented an automotive sensing platform called Cruisers, and have deployed it into the garbage collecting trucks of the city to evaluate the applicability of automotive sensing in realistic urban settings. In this paper, we first detail the system design, implementation and deployment of Cruisers and then evaluate its performance in realistic setting.

Evacuation trainings have been conducted as an effective action to protect people from incoming tsunamis in case of a big earthquake. This research addresses limitations of existing conventional &quot;event-style&quot; tsunami evacuation trainings, that are inflexible in disaster scenarios, training timings, training locations, and participatable trainees. We propose a new ubiquitous computing technology-supported training model named &quot;Asynchronously-Participatable Tsunami Evacuation Training Model&quot; and a prototype system &quot;EverCuate&quot; based on this model. We evaluated the EverCuate system by conducting an extensive user study in Fujisawa city, Kanagawa, with 40 participants and the total number of 229 trainings. The evaluation results validated the effectiveness of EverCuate in terms of easiness in participation to a training, promotion of understanding necessity of different evacuation behaviour for different disaster scenarios, and easiness of analysing people&#039;s real evacuation behaviour from the view point of local authorities.

Participatory planning is to involve citizens in a process of urban development, which is likely to find out and solve a problem happening in an actual city. To promote participatory planning, it is important to activate everyday communication between city officials and citizens. The purpose of this research is to apply the participatory sensing technology to participatory planning which people exchange information through their mobile devices or computers. In the existing examples of participatory sensing, the categories of questions are limited or it is necessary to install a specific application for collecting and reflecting citizens&#039; demands. Besides, it is required that data from citizens should be open without privacy information and also operation of a system should be easy. To solve these problems, we propose MinaQn (Mina means everybody in Japanese), a participatory sensing system for citizen-centric urban development. We carried out a two weeks experiment in corporation with 3 cities in Japan. Overall, more than 1,000 answer data and feedback were gathered and we measured the effectiveness of MinaQn with qualitative and quantitative data. Also we direct the design policies of future participatory sensing systems. In particular, to get more people involved in providing their location information in the event of a natural disaster, we found that an active agent of city officials and support for the establishment of standards and systems for setting free questions are needed.

Since current digital fabrication relies on 3D printer very much, there are several concerns such as printing cost (i.e., both financial and temporal cost) and sometimes too homogeneous impression with plastic filament. To address and solve the problem, we propose ReFabricator, a computational fabrication tool integrating everyday objects into digital fabrication. ReFabrication is a concept of fabrication, mixing the idea of Reuse and Digital Fabrication, which aims to fabricate new functional shape with ready made products, effectively utilizing its behavior. As a system prototype, we have implemented a design tool which enables users to gather up every day objects and reassemble them to another functional shape with taking advantages of both analog and digital fabrication. In particular, the system calculates the optimized positional relationship among objects, and generates joint objects to bond the objects together in order to achieve a certain shape.

Recent technological trends in mobile/wearable devices and sensors have been enabling an increasing number of people to collect and store their "lifelog" easily in their daily lives. Beyond exercise behavior change of individual users, our research focus is on the behavior change of teams, based on lifelogging technologies and lifelog sharing. In this paper, we propose and evaluate six different types of lifelog sharing models among team members for their exercise promotion, leveraging the concepts of "competition" and "collaboration." According to our experimental mobile web application for exercise promotion and an extensive user study conducted with a total of 64 participants over a period of three weeks, the model with a "competition" technique resulted in the most effective performance for competitive teams, such as sports teams.

This paper proposes a person identification algorithm that can be used when searching for persons from multiple images captured by flying robots. The images taken by such robots have low resolution and contain various viewing angles of people because they fly at a safe distance from and often move around people. The proposed person identification algorithm is based on appearance and can identify a person from low-resolution images of the upper body. In appearance-based person identification, the accuracy is low when a single image is used. Therefore, the accuracy is improved by accumulating the score. Experimental results obtained using 40 subjects show that the identification accuracy based on images having different view angles is better than that based on images having similar view angles. Further, the identification accuracy increase even when rear images of the person that are barely distinguishable from those of another person are added to the input images. In addition, it can identify persons even when the size of the upper body image is as small as 15 pixels. We performed the identification experiment using images taken by an aerial-robot while it was actually flying and proved the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Recently, many researchers have been focusing on the detection and classification of urban events by information analysis on social networks. Previous works mainly use text analysis of users' posts on social networks for detecting urban events. However, this approach has a limitation that the users' posts must mention the event for the analysis to be conducted. We propose a new method for classifying urban events by extracting user interest from the location-based social network information without text analysis. The proposed method includes analyzing common friends of users in the vicinity of the event venue and extracting common the friends' attributes by referring to related Wikipedia information. We designed and implemented the proposed method, and conducted an experiment for evaluating our method. Our experimental result shows that our method can classify events well in cases where participants have similar interests.

In Japan, there are 1.2milion kilometers or more of the road, of which 900,000 km of road has been paved. Paved road has been painted compartment line to separate many vehicles and driver-pedestrian. Compartment line is important for drivers and pedestrians because they can recognize for they are aware of the width of the roadway and the sidewalk by the compartment line. Therefore, municipality should inspect the ongoing compartment line but they are inspected by people so the burden for road management is big. The purpose of this research would be to automatically detect the damage of the compartment line. The image obtained from cameras, applying random forest. In this experiment, we used more than about 50,000 of images by capturing a Walking camera and a vehicle-mounted camera. Baseline and precision comparison result, the detection of damage to compartment line, it was confirmed that the proposed method is effective.

Collecting urban data in a citywide scale plays a fundamental role in the research, development and implementation of smart cities. This demo introduces Cruisers, an automotive sensing platform for smart cities, which is developed based on the following ideas. a) Garbage collecting trucks are used as host automobiles to accommodate sensors, b) 3G cellular communication network is used to wirelessly deliver sensed data directly to servers, and c) Proxy server( s) are adopted to convert the format of sensed data to required ones. This platform has been deployed to 24 garbage collecting trucks at Fujisawa city, i.e., nearly 1/4 of the total number of such trucks in the city. An iOS application is also developed to demonstrate the sensing process and the covered area.

We present Senbay, a novel smartphone-based platform for capturing and sharing synchronously-recorded video/sensor data stream using animated two-dimensional barcode. In the ubicomp environment, mobile devices have enabled us to capture video and various types of sensor data easily. However, currently we do not have a framework to instantly integrate video and those sensor data on smartphones and share them easily with other users on the net. In this paper, we present Senbay, a platform to integrate video and sensor data stream into single video on smartphones. With Senbay, sensor data stream will be embedded into a video as animated QR code in real-time, thus users can share the \\sensor-federated" video easily on the web, through lots of popular video sharing services. This paper introduces the architecture and evaluation of Senbay and discusses future vision of the sensor-federated video sharing platform along with several applications.

World Wide Web contains a huge amount of periodically-updated values originally sensed from the physical world
they include, for example, density of air pollutant, road traffic condition, and car park occupancy. In many cases, however, those data are not easily accessible from a computer program due to the lack of APIs to fetch them. In this paper, to cope with this problem, we propose an architecture for discovering, excavating, and streaming the entombed web contents (EWC). This architecture, called Sensorizer, leverages crowd sourcing for accurate EWC discovery, periodic web scraping with a headless browser for excavation from dynamic web pages, and a standardized communication protocol (XMPP) for data streaming to wide variety of applications.

It relaxes us and enriches our daily lives to rear fish and appreciate an aquarium. In that case, the aquarium environment and the physical condition management of the fish become important. However, it's difficult that an owner rears aquarium fish interactively based on the state of the fish because fish can't tell the owner about its state. Thus, this study proposes the "Aqua Mapping" which informs an owner about the condition of an aquarium and fish by indicating fish state on the screen set behind the aquarium using the position information. This system can offer interactive rearing environment between an user and fish through an aquarium.

Since these location-based SNS messages often refer real-world's events, many researchers have tried to recognize real-world's event through analysis of the messages. In this paper, we define a new index of event classification called popularity, and present a novel method to calculate the index by analysing social network of the events participants. Popularity, which reflects the diversity of event participants, is a useful index of the event for creating various applications such as event navigation or recommendation. We designed and implemented intuitive web-based interactive tool for analysing popularity of events. Through comparative experiments by analysis of proposed system and crowdsourcing, we confirmed that our proposal method provide a certain amount of accuracy for calculating the popularity of events.

In addition, due to price reduction of sensors and improvement of technique of motion capture, gestural and three-dimentional inputs are emerging to interact with digital media. Interactive public media which supports three-dimentional inputs will increase. However, instructing gestural inputs has difficulties which contains nature of publicness and complexity of the interaction itself. In this research, we propose the method of instructing the way of interaction for users. We implemented the prototype which supports gestural input and applied our proposal on it. We carried out field study with our prototype and we got feedback from 72 participants of the field study. In this paper, we describe the result of the experiment and discussion of our proposal.

In pervasive computing environments, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play an important role, collecting reliable and accurate context information so that applications are able to provide services to users on demand. In such environments, sensors should be self-adaptive by taking correct decisions based on sensed data in real-time. However, sensor data is often faulty. Faults are not so exceptional and in most deployments tend to occur frequently. Therefore, the capability of self-healing is important to ensure higher levels of reliability and availability. We design a framework which provides self-healing capabilities, enabling a flexible choice of components for detection, classification, and correction of faults at runtime. Within our framework, a variety of fault detection and classification algorithms can be applied, depending on the characteristics of the sensor data types as well as the topology of the sensor networks. A set of mechanisms for each and every step of the self-healing framework, covering detection, classification, and correction of faults are proposed. To validate the applicability, we illustrate a case study where our solution is implemented as an adaptation engine and integrated seamlessly into the ClouT system. The engine processes data coming from physical sensors deployed in Santander, Spain, providing corrected sensor data to other smart city applications developed in the ClouT project.

Roads are becoming deterioration in everywhere. In some places, traffic marks painted on roads are damaged thus needed to be updated. Municipalities must manage road condition and traffic marks (road painting). It is the municipalities task to manage those roads using, for example, special inspection cars and human eyes. However, the management cost is high if a city contains many roads. This paper proposes a mechanism that automates this management. Our idea is to leverage cameras attached to garbage trucks, which run through the entire city almost everyday. The mechanism collects road images and detects damaged traffic marks using an image recognition algorithm. This paper shows the algorithm and reports the benchmark results. The benchmark showed that the mechanism can detect the damaged traffic marks with 76.6% precision.

While a major advantage of sensing systems with battery-operated flying objects is a wide sensing coverage, sensing time is limited due to its limited amount of energy. We propose dynamically rechargeable flying objects, called EverCopter. EverCopter achieves both long sensing time and wide sensing coverage by the following two characteristics. First, multiple EverCopters can be tied in a row by power supply cables. Since the root EverCopter in a row is connected to DC power supply on the ground, each EverCopter can fly without battery. This makes their sensing time forever, unless the power supply on the ground fails. Second, the leaf EverCopter can detach itself from the row in order to enjoy wider sensing coverage. An EverCopter, while it is detached, runs with its own battery-supplied energy. When the remaining energy becomes low, it flies back to the row to recharge the battery.

Currently, everyone can detect and store many life-log data very easily with the spread of smart phones or wearable devices and large scale data storage. Wide variety and large scale life-log data are very useful to self behavior change, medical care, education, and social analytics. Existing researches of human behavior change using life-log data focus on individual human behavior change. But nowadays everyone have communication equipment like smart phones. Group behavior change is very useful to keep workers' health in company and/or managing amount of practice in a sport team. Group has many kind of human relations, for example, manager and normal member. Therefore techniques for individual human behavior change is not effective to groups. The biggest aim of our research is to build the model of group behavior change. Specially, we focus on team behavior change. In this paper, we propose six types of group behavior model based on the "competition" and "collaboration" technique. We used encouraging team modification application in sports team and laboratory for keeping the sit-up exercise for 3 weeks. Sit-up exercise is very important to preventing the injury and keep fit for the sport team and the laboratory member. We create 8 groups in a team. We evaluate and consider this model based on the change of the self-efficacy and number of sit-up activities.

We propose a novel technique that aggregates multiple sensor streams generated by totally different types of sensors into a visually enhanced video stream. This paper shows major features of SENSeTREAM and demonstrates enhancement of user experience in an online live music event. Since SENSeTREAM is a video stream with sensor values encoded in a two-dimensional graphical code, it can transmit multiple sensor data streams while maintaining their synchronization. A SENSeTREAM can be transmitted via existing live streaming services, and can be saved into existing video archive services. We have implemented a prototype SENSe- TREAM generator and deployed it to an online live music event. Through the pilot study, we confirmed that SENSe- TREAM works with popular streaming services, and provide a new media experience for live performances. We also indicate future direction for establishing visual stream aggregation and its applications.

Recent technological trends on mobile/wearable devices and sensors have been enabling increasing number of people to collect and store their "life-logs" easily in their daily lives. Beyond exercise behavior change of individual user, our research focus is on the behavior change of teams, based on life-logging technologies and information sharing. In this paper, we propose and evaluate six different types of information sharing model among team members for their exercise promotion, leveraging concepts of "competition" and "collaboration". According to our experimental mobile web application for exercise promotion and extensive user study among 64 total users for three weeks, the model with "external competition" technique resulted the most effective performance for competitive teams such as sport teams.

This paper proposes a concept of linked participatory sensing, called LiPS, that divide a complex sensing task into small tasks and link each other to optimize social resource allocation. Recently participatory sensing have been spreading, but its sensing tasks are still very simple and easy for participants to deal with (e.g. Please input the number of people standing in a queue. etc.). To adapt to high-level tasks which require specific skills such as those in engineering, the medical profession or authority such as the organizer of the event, we need to optimize social resource allocation because the number of such professionals are limited. To achieve the complex sensing tasks efficiently, LiPS enables to divide a complex sensing task into small tasks and link each other by assigning proper sensors. LiPS can treat physical sensors and human as hybrid multi-level sensors, and task provider can arrange social resource allocation for the goal of each divided sensing task. In this paper, we describe the design and development of the LiPS system. We also implemented an in-lab experiment as the first prototype of hybrid sensing system and discussed the model of further system through users' feedback. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Recent progress of mobile devices such as smartphones enables human to leverage their perception ability as a part of sensing framework. This sensing framework, so called participatory sensing, distributes various sensing tasks (e.g., whether report, waiting time in a queue, traffic conditions etc.) to possible participants. Then, participants can select and achieve the sensing tasks. However, in the coming future with the rapid growth of participatory sensing and increasing number of sensing tasks, it must be very hard for users to choose appropriate sensing tasks around them. To solve this problem, we propose a system called Help Me!, which can value and visualize importance of sensing tasks by quantifying them in cooperation with physical sensors. Since Help Me! system provides objective index for sensing tasks, it enhances opportunity for users to participate to sensing tasks. We designed and implemented Help Me! system as an integrated architecture of physical sensors and participatory sensors. Through initial in-lab experiment, we confirmed that Help Me! system can enhance opportunity to participate to sensing tasks for users. © 2014 ACM.

City-scale IoT, a fundamental infrastructure for smart cities, requries to sense a range of ubiquitous entities in a city including humans, objects, and spaces. Ubiquitous sensor networks (USN) is the key technology to this. However, failures of a USN may result in hazards in our daily lives in smart cities. Monitoring of USN, rapid detection of faults and failures, and recovery from them are thus important for better applications of USN. This paper proposes a means to do so comprehensively by using Dependability Cases (D-Case). Since USN is a system composed of variety of components such ash wireless sensor nodes, database servers, and network appliances, we need a tool that can target them in common. Our tool enables to execute monitoring programs on a D-Case diagram, which is represented with Goal Structuing Notation (GSN), so that it can target a variety of devices and services.

According to the spread of smart devices such as smartphones and smart tablets, opportunities to communicate between them will be more increased. Though we usually use WiFi and Bluetooth, it is still burden task for end-users. Many previous techniques to collaborate devices easily has been also proposed, they are not always best solution in some situations. This paper proposes a new interaction method called Vinteracion, which leverages combination of vibrator and accelerometer to send information from smart device to the other smart device. Vinteraction enables users to use touch interaction like Near Field Communication, which provides easy and intuitive way. We present an algorithm and implementation of vibration-based communication that can be adapted to any combination of smart devices. © 2014 ACM.

This paper proposes FRAGWRAP which maps scent to real objects in real-time. To achieve this purpose, we leverage fragrance-encapsulated soap bubble with projection mapping technique. Since human olfaction is known as combined utilization of his/her eyes and nose, we encapsulate fragrance into bubble soap to stimulate the nose and also project 3D image of the fragrance to the bubble soap in real-time. In this video, we present our first prototype which automatically inserts fragrance into a soap bubble and also projects images to the moving bubble. All system is activated by speech recognition.

Designing novel and meaningful interactions in the domain of Augmented Reality (AR) requires an efficient and appropriate methodology. A user centered design process requires the construction and evaluation of several prototypes with increasing technical fidelity. Although the main content of the application can already be conveyed with prerendered video, one of the main interactions in AR - The user-selected viewpoint - is only available in a very late stage. We propose the use of panoramic 360? video for scenario based user evaluation, where the user can select his point of view during playback. Initial users report a high degree of immersion in the constructed scenario, even for handheld AR.

In recent years, the steady emergence of digital communication, especially social media, has increased the 'placelessness' of inter-person communication practices, i.e., lessening the need to reside co-located in order to communicate. When these communication practices carry over to co-located settings, they introduce redundancy and potentially even harm the co-located context, since use of personal technologies tends to isolate users from their surroundings. In this position paper, we want to raise awareness on how interactive public displays could alleviate this redundancy and potential isolation. We present a model of reinforcing co-located communications, and illustrate it through example use cases. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

The paper proposes EverCopter, which provides continuous and adaptive over-the-air sensing with detachable wired flying objects. While a major advantage of sensing systems with battery-operated MAVs is a wide sensing coverage, sensing time is limited due to its limited amount of energy.

There has been a great effort to create context-Aware technology to support user's life. Context-Aware technology is useful because it resolves user's demand in prior. However, if it fails to recognize context correctly and controls appliances incorrectly, users may feel uncomfortable about the environment. Context recognition error is currently unavoidable, therefore, notifying the user of what kind of result each context has, is considered to be important in order to ease user's discomfort. In the similar way, it is important to show the smartness of ubiquitous computing environment to people who don't know about the environment. To effectively provide this information to the users, we propose an interface called Second-sighted Glasses, inspired by the movie titled "Next". The glasses shows users the future effects of each action they may take with augmented reality technique.

This paper proposes and evaluates a method to detect and classify tweets that are triggered by places where users locate. Recently, many related works address to detect real world events from social media such as Twitter. However, geotagged tweets often contain noise, which means tweets which are not content-wise related to users' location. This noise is problem for detecting real world events. To address and solve the problem, we define the Place-Triggered Geotagged Tweet, meaning tweets which have both geotag and content-based relation to users' location. We designed and implemented a keyword-based matching technique to detect and classify place-triggered geotagged tweets. We evaluated the performance of our method against a ground truth provided by 18 human classifiers, and achieved 82% accuracy. Additionally, we also present two example applications for visualizing place-triggered geotagged tweets. Copyright 2012 ACM.

Deploying Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) securely still requires users to have certain skills and exert effort. In the near "sensor everywhere" future, a much simpler method for deploying WSN will be necessary for end-users. We propose LiDSN(Light Communication for Deploying Secure Wireless Sensor Networks) which enables users to achieve deployment tasks via simple interaction. LiDSN leverages light-based communication between an LED and a light sensor in order to add a new sensor node securely into existing WSN. Through touching interaction, a new sensor node ID and secret key can be transmitted to the WSN, and then the WSN is able to identify which node should be added while maintaining the security of the WSN. Recent progress in information technology enables people to easily broadcast events live on the Internet. Although the advantage of the Internet is live communication between a performer and listeners, the current mode of communication is writing comments using Twitter or Facebook, or some similar messaging network. In one type of live broadcast, musical performances, it is difficult for a musician, when playing an instrument, to communicate with listeners by writing comments. We propose a new communication mode between performers who play musical instruments, and their listeners by enabling listeners to control the performer's camera or illumination remotely. The results of four weeks of experiment confirm the emergence of nonverbal communication between a performer and listeners, and among listeners, which increases camaraderie amongst listeners and performers. Additionally, the dramatic impact of a performance is increased by enabling listeners to control various camera actions such as zoom-in or pan in real time. The results also provide implications for design of future interactive live broadcasting services. Copyright 2012 ACM.

Some baseball players have their shoulder and elbow injuries cause of the disorder of the throwing form and an overwork. Fielders especially practice without knowledge of their bodies and care for it. However it is difficult to recognize their throwing form and number of throws. This research has been supported player&#039;s performance by analysis of player&#039;s throwing using sanjigen-motion-capcher and douga-bunnseki for all time. But this research has problems with place and time. Because it doesn&#039;t assume actual practices. So we are researching for their new supports to improve their form and to take a break by using the radio small acceleration sensor which you can check your throwing form and number of throws easily.

Ubiquitous computing and communication are the key technology for achieving economic growth, sustainable development, safe and secure community towards a ubiquitous network society. Although the technology alone cannot solve the emerging problems, it is important to deploy services everywhere and reach real people with sensor enabled smart phones or devices. Using these devices and wireless sensor networks, we have been creating various types of ubiquitous services which support our everyday life. In this paper, we describe ubiquitous services based on a HOT-SPA model and discuss challenges in creating new ubiquitous services with smart enablers such as smart phones, wireless sensor nodes, social media, and cloud services. We first classify various types of ubiquitous service and introduce the HOT-SPA model which is aimed at modeling ubiquitous services. Several ubiquitous services, such as DIY smart object services, Twitthings, Airy Notes, and SensingCloud, are described. We then address the challenges in creating advanced ubiquitous services by enhancing coupling between a cyber and a physical space.

The paper proposes an intuitive device selecting interface called "Vib-connect" for device collaboration. Recent progress in Information Technology allowed various devices to join wireless network. As a result, various ways of device collaborations and services became possible. However, interfaces for selecting devices are still complicated for end-users and far from being intuitive. To solve this problem, we propose "vib-connect", an interface which enables users to select device intuitively by pasting a vib-connector, a small vibration-based device. Vib-connect solves these problem by implementing these device information as a unique vibration pattern. By keeping smartphones or any kind of vibration generating device, end-users can easily select devices to collaborate. We implement a prototype, and through the evaluation, we confirmed high accuracy in vibration pattern detection and high usability satisfaction by nonexpert users. By using "Vib-connect", users without any technical expertize can easily select devices to collaborate with.

We propose a simple interaction to transfer information on smart phone to laptop/tablet PCs. We often encounter the situation that we need to send URL, which is preliminary accessed in mobile devices, from mobile devices to personal computers (PCs) to see the web page with wider screen. To support this information transfer, we utilize combination between vibrator in smart phones and accelerometer in laptop/tablet PCs. URL information is encoded to vibration patterns, and the patterns are detected and decoded by accelerometer in PCs. We demonstrate the interaction's efficiency and reasonability with actual products. © 2011 Authors.

This paper proposes a low energy consumption time estimation scheme for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) called LECTES. In WSN applications, drift of wireless sensor nodes&#039; clocks is one of the most critical issues when processing data. Many researchers have been challenging this problem by proposing time synchronization protocols, such as FTSP, TPSN and RBS. LECTES does not synchronize sensor nodes&#039; clocks, instead, it estimates the sensing time by subtracting the time taken to process data from the reception time of packets. We implemented LECTES on MAC layer of Iris mote, and confirmed that it achieves the average accuracy of 0.488μs as opposed to 1.618μs with FTSP in single hop. The evaluation results further proved that in comparison to FTSP, LECTES 1)increased sensor nodes&#039; lifetimes by 19.8%, 2)decreased the growth of error per hop from 0.694μs to 0.256μs in a 9 hop network, and 3)decreased the compiled program size by 8,046 bytes of ROM and 452 bytes of RAM.

The advancement of information technology provides customers various ways to purchase products, and large number of customers are buying products online rather than buying them at brick-and-motor stores. In spite of that, customers are stimulated to purchase products at brick-and-motor stores through the use of QR code and digital cash. It is said that customers will be more encouraged to buy products at brick-and-motor stores by adapting new technologies, such as RFID and electronic device. In consequence, firing clerks and less jobs being required are resulting in less communication between customers and clerks. Communication between customers and clerks increases the chance of customers purchasing products, and enables customers to the choose most desired products. Thus, in order to improve the convenience of brick-and-motor stores, it is important to encourage clerks to have communication with customers. Although, there is a proper timing to wait on a customer, and there is a great chance of making customers feel uncomfortable as a result of wrong timing or way of service. In order to solve this problem, we aim to assist customers and brick-and-motor stores by detecting customers&#039; &quot;indecision&quot; when purchasing products.

The number of elders who encounter falling accidents has been increasing in the past few decades. Falling accidents could cause major injuries, such as having bruise, breaking bone, and in the worst case, losing life. Therefore, preventing elders from falling accidents is important in order to ensure the quality of life. In this paper, we propose Fatigue Alerting SHoes (FASH), a pair of shoes which detects the fatigue of walking people. There are three effects of fatigue on gait, and FASH system acquires all of them to improve the accuracy of fatigue detection. FASH system uses pressure sensors embedded in a pair of shoes to detect the tiredness, and notifies the user of "Tiredness Scale," a scale we defined in order to show the degree of tiredness. Through the evaluation, we affirmed the availability of using pressure sensor to detect accumulation of tiredness. We also confirmed the difference between the physical tiredness and the subjective feeling toward tiredness, which signifies the importance of acknowledging the user of his/her fatigue.

This paper proposes event description language using temporal relation for creating various services with smart objects. By attaching sensor nodes to everyday objects, users can augment the objects digitally and take the objects into various services. When creating such smart object services, users should define event using physical value from sensors. The most common event is defined by simply describing threshold of sensor value and logical operation. Therefore, when end-users want to define more complex event, they need to use hard programming language such as C or Java. For defining such complex event easily without complex programming language, we propose a new event description language based on temporal relation between simple events.

Recent years have seen active development of context-aware applications and systems that helps the development. However, it suffers from increasing fears for leakages of users&apos; activity information to other users unconsciously, since the owner of the activity information included in the sensor data is not treated in context-aware systems. We propose the Area-Based Activity Information Preservation (ABAIP) system that enables users to control the level of data resolution of their activity information to allow applications to use. Degrading sensor data resolution causes coarse grained context recognition. The system prevents unconscious and unnecessary activity information leakage amongst the ABAIP system users, while providing ubiquitous sensor environment for various kinds of ubiquitous software.

Spread of information technology has changed the form of information scrapping from only paper media to digital media. However, to scrap information from paper media to digital media is still burden task for users; they must capture information digitally by camera or OCR, and organize information manually. Also, some research work on extracting &quot;atmosphere&quot;, which is the feeling that an event or place gives you. However, every atmosphere produced is depended on one&#039;s feeling or the mood that they are in, and it is difficult to analyze it in a public space with an existing research. In this research, we try to demonstrate these atmospheres visible with the &quot;momo!&quot; system, by using vital sensors to analyze the mood. This paper proposes the concept of DIY (do-it-yourself) ubiquitous computing, an architecture allowing non-experts to establish ubiquitous computing environments in the real world. This concept has been implemented in the "u-Texture", which is a self-organizable panel that works as a building block. While the traditional scheme attaches devices such as computers, sensors, and network equipments externally to make everyday objects smart, the u-Texture has these devices built in beforehand to assemble smart objects. The u-Texture can change its own behavior autonomously through recognition of its location, its angle of inclination, and surrounding environment by assembling these factors physically. This paper describes the design, the implementation, and various applications of u-Textures to confirm that the concept can contribute to establishment of ubiquitous computing environments in the real world without expert users.

This paper introduces the concent of DIY (do-it-yourself) Smart Objects Services that enables non-expert users to apply smart object services for everyday life. When using smart object services, a semantic connection between sensor node and domestic objects must be made before services function properly. At home, however, professional assistance with such installation may be either unavailable or too costly. Spot &amp; Snap solves this problem by easing of such association with use of a USB camera and an LED spotlight. With Spot &amp; Snap, nonexpert users can register their belongings to preferred services without experts by taking their pictures. It also provides application framework to create various smart object services. This paper describes the prototype implementation of Spot &amp; Snap and a range of its applications. In addition, it evaluates Spot &amp; Snap through capability and usability experiments.

With diffusion of ubiquitous computing environments, it is essential that non-expert users can create ubiquitous computing environment by themselves. Compared with computer users who are mainly engineers or experts, ubiquitous computing users are varied and a friendly user interface is desired. This paper proposes collaboration scheme based on blockable appliances for ubiquitous computing environment. This collaboration scheme has been implemented in the u-Texture II, which is a self-organizable panel that works as a building block. The u-Texture II can change its own behavior through recognition of its location, its inclination, and surrounding environment by assembling these factors physically. This paper describes the design, the implementation, and various applications of u-Texture II to confirm that the collaboration scheme can contribute to establishment of ubiquitous computing environments without expert users.

This paper explores a suitable service model for realizing domestic smart object applications and proposes a software and hardware package called uPackage to support this model. By attaching a tiny wireless sensor node to users' belongings, users can augment the object digitally and take the object into various services such as status monitoring or preventing lost property. The system provided by uPackage supports users to install and manage such smart object services; it enables users to digitally associate sensor nodes with daily objects, manage the associated information and sensor data, and create various smart object applications without professional skills. Initial demonstration to children indicate that the service model provided by uPackage is easy understandable and increases users' acceptance of the wireless sensor node technology.

An SR-modified Au cluster with a sub-nanometer size, Au 11(S-4-NC5H4)3(PPh3) 7 (1), has been synthesized by NaBH4 reduction of Au(S-py)(PPh3) or by reacting [Au9(PPh3) 8](NO3)3 with HS-4-py in good yield. Its molecular structure has been elucidated by single crystal X-ray diffraction, and TEM observation has been achieved for the first time for this size of SR-modified Au clusters. The core structure is best described in terms of an incomplete icosahedron. CV measurements in CH2Cl2 have suggested that the cluster does not coagulate in solution with significant concentration. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have developed a method for synthesizing a singing voice by gradually changing the musical expression based on speech morphing. This paper shows the advantages of this method in comparison with the approach of binary discrete transformation between two expressions, confirmed by statistical analyses of perception tests. In order to synthesize different expressional strengths of a singing voice, a "normal" (without expression) voice of a particular singer is used as the base of morphing, and three different expressions, "dark," "whispery" and "wet," are used as the target. Through our experiments, we confirmed i) the proposed morphing algorithm effectively interpolates the expressional strength of a singing voice, ii) an approximate equation of the perceptual sense can be used to calculate the morph ratio at a perceptually linear interval, and iii) our gradual transformation method can generate a natural singing voice from the interpolation of two different expressions.

This paper introduces a novel way to allow non-expert users to create smart surroundings. Non-smart everyday objects such as furniture and appliances found in homes and offices can be converted to smart ones by attaching computers, sensors, and devices. In this way, non-smart components that form non-smart objects are made smart in advance. For our first prototype, we have developed u-Texture, a self-organizable universal panel that works as a building block. The u-Texture can change its own behavior autonomously through recognition of its location, its inclination, and surrounding environment by assembling these factors physically. We have demonstrated several applications to confirm that u-Textures can create smart surroundings easily without expert users.

Smart city initiatives are attracting attention in order to improve the efficiency of operations in cities with increasingly concentrated populations and to realize a wide variety of services that enhance the QoL of residents. One way to make cities smarter is to make real-space objects, organizations, and societies, which are their components, smarter, and to share the information obtained from them among different types of organizations or at the city level.
We developed CityFeder, a programmable federation infrastructure that dynamically connects different smart city infrastructures according to social conditions. CityFeder is an extension of Node-RED, a visual programming and execution environment, to solve this problem. CityFeder solves this problem by extending Node-RED, a visual programming and execution environment, to enable data distribution among smart city infrastructures according to social conditions defined as scopes.

This research focused to create new participatory sensing system which leverages a concept of mimicking users as location-based monsters. In the proposed method, the research succeeded to design and implement PoI design function, algorithm for mimicking users as location-based monster, and actual applications both client-side and server-side. Through the research period, we executed three real-world experiments, and confirmed that proposed system has several advantages compared to existing method such as increasing number of posts from the PoIs, changing communication style between users, etc. In addition to the participatory sensing method, the research also succeeded to design and implement sensor data distribution platform called SOXFire with extending several features of server-to-server federation, defining new scheme for leveraging participatory sensing data. Moreover, the research enabled to deploy the system into city workers' daily operation.
