Profile
After studying Commercial Engineering in Bolivia and Chile, I worked as a consultant for Pro-Mujer International, The World Bank, DANIDA, and JICA. I have a M.A. and a Ph.D. in International Development from Nagoya University. My research interests focus on the integration of econometrics, spatial data science, and machine learning methods to understand and inform the process of sustainable development across subnational regions and countries. My current research deals with (1) geospatial inequality and development; (2) regional economic growth and convergence; (3) regional labor markets outcomes and macroeconomic shocks; and (4) structural change and productivity dynamics.

  1. Convergence Clubs in Labor Productivity and its Proximate Sources: Evidence from Developed and Developing Countries Reviewed

    MENDEZ Carlos( Role: Sole author)

    Springer  2020.11  ( ISBN:978-981-15-8628-6

     More details

    Language:English Book type:Scholarly book

Testing for economic convergence across countries has been a central issue in the literature of economic growth and development. This book introduces a modern framework to study the cross-country convergence dynamics in labor productivity and its proximate sources: capital accumulation and aggregate efficiency. In particular, recent convergence dynamics of developed as well as developing countries are evaluated through the lens of a non-linear dynamic factor model and a clustering algorithm for panel data. This framework allows us to examine key economic phenomena such as technological heterogeneity and multiple equilibria. In this context, the book provides a succinct review of the recent club convergence literature, a comparative view of developed and developing countries, and a tutorial on how to implement the club convergence framework in the statistical software Stata.

In mid 2020, IRSA produced a call for papers inviting Indonesian academics to report and analyse issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic at regional level in Indonesia in order to provide regional perspectives on how the pandemic has affected local people, and how local people responded to this treat and what policy gaps seen from the regions. Thirty-five academics responded to this call, resulting in these 15 selected chapters for this book. These chapters deal with inter-regions as well as specific region analysis. The specific region analyses cover from issues in large cities such as Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Manado to those in remote areas such as Tual islands, border areas of West Kalimantan and Papua. The COVID-19 related issues in this book are rich, as they also include the issues of regional election, people mobilities, social capital, poverty and food prices.

Sustainable global development is commonly view as an equilibrium that rests upon three pillars: economic transformation, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. However, the cross-country convergence/divergence dynamics of such a multidimensional concept are not yet well understood. In this study, I will test whether there is an increasing degree of distributional divergence in the pillars of sustainable development. To do so, I will integrate the distribution dynamics framework of the economic growth econometrics literature with a new hierarchical clustering algorithm of the unsupervised machine learning literature. More specifically, I will test distributional divergence as the formation of multiple basins of attraction (stationary clusters) that polarize or stratify the nonparametric kernel distribution of each supportive pillar. In doing so, I aim to provide a more complete representation of the recent dynamics and multidimensional structure of sustainable global development.
