        page: 1 - 20   2022.3

     More details

    Authorship:Corresponding author   Language:Japanese

The Arab Republic of Egypt is in the middle of economic reform while coping with the COVID-19 after she was assisted by a series of rescue programs by the International Monetary Fund due to aggravated and continuous budget deficits in 2016. The country is still young with average age of 24.6 years old and expecting to be in the period of population dividends soon. The paper analyzes the current state of the Egyptian economy in the first half. In the second half, the paper looks at the impact of the COVID- 19. The paper investigates debt sustainability and see the debt is still sustainable even incorporating the increase in fiscal spending relevant to the COVID-19. Then, the paper builds two panel econometric models with GDP growth rate as a dependent variable and macroeconomic variables as controlling variables including the case of the COVID-19 in order to quantify the adverse impact of the COVID-19 on GDP growth rate. The model finds that Egypt was so far successful to manage the adverse impact of the COVID-19 on her economy.

The need for a good understanding of the relationship between financial inclusion and economic growth has become a significant concern in national development. Both sectors play an essential role in formulating income distribution policies and reducing poverty, evidence from Eastern Indonesia. This paper, therefore, empirically analyzes the contribution of the financial inclusion to economic growth, poverty alleviation and income inequality in Eastern Indonesia. The Toda-Yamamoto VAR bivariate causality model and the dynamic Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) were the two approaches used in this research. The effect and relationship of financial inclusion on economic growth, poverty, inequality and other factors were analyzed using PVAR, and Toda-Yamamoto VAR bivariate causality model, respectively. The results of the bivariate causality model indicate a high relationship
level between financial inclusion, economic growth, poverty, and income distribution in Eastern Indonesia. The socio-economic growth has a positive impact on the level of financial inclusion, with a negative impact on
poverty. Meanwhile, financial inclusion has a positive effect on inequality, which leads to widespread income
    inequality in Eastern Indonesia.

This paper will investigate the impact of floating exchange rate regime on the Egyptian economy. The first paper analyzes the impact on trade. It is found the trade, both imports and exports, expanded soon after introducing floating exchange rate regime. Then, the paper runs the vector autoregressive model to analyze the impact of floating exchange rate regime on the monetary transmission channels. Four monetary transmission channels were identified to be working in floating exchange rate system. The study found that the exchange rate channel of discount rate and the bank lending channel of the reserve money were newly created after introducing floating exchange rate regium. The study also found that while discount rates were not statistically significant to explain exchange rates, bank lending yield of T-bill and asset prices, reserve money was significant

Jordan has implemented trade liberalization policy since the turn of the 20th century, motivated both by country's interest and borrowing from international institutions. This paper investigate how these trade
liberalization policies including Free Trade Agreement or FTA affected the export and import structure of the Jordanian trade, international competitiveness and productivity. The trade structure was analyzed by
computing Revealed Comparative Advantage or RCA and Herfindahl- Hirschman Index, or HHI. The analysis on RCA shows improved competitiveness in the Jordan's export competitiveness in such commodities as textile and garment assisted by US involved trade initiatives, fertilizers from crude fertilizer, climbing up value-added chain and pharmaceutical products, which was led by the FDI.

HHI analysis indicates product concentration intensified from the 1990's to the middle of the 2000's. Subsequently, the diversification in both product and export market improved. The paper argues that a remarkable increase in the US share in Jordanian exports r due to FTA and QIZ measures influenced behaviors in HHI and RCA. Lastly, the paper found that a series of trade liberalization policies and productivity improvement occurred during the same time, which indicate some relation between trade policies undertaken by the Jordanian government and productivity improvement.

  1. Determinants of Export Diversification with Spatially Lagged Variables

    2022.12
    -
    2023.3

     More details

One of the structural issues in developing economies has been diversifying export structure since developing economies whose economic structures heavily depends on limited commodities are vulnerable to fluctuations of commodity prices. However, it is still the issue. How can the developing economy diversify their economic and export structures? What are the determinants of export diversification? This paper tries to answer to those questions using Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) as a proxy for diversification of export structures based on panel data from 1990 to 2019 in 93 countries. We use spatial-lagged variables of the variables of neighboring countries weighted by an inverse of distance between two capital cities. Findings include that gross capital formation and a smaller fluctuation of the prices play the important role in improving diversification of the export structures.

  2. Regional Okun’s law, endogeneity, and heterogeneous effects: District-level evidence from Indonesia

    2022.11
    -
    2023.2

     More details

This paper investigates regional Okun’s law across 514 districts of Indonesia over the 2011-2020 period. To address the endogeneity issue, we use regional temperature as instrument for economic growth. Our results show that regional growth becomes statistically significant only after endogeneity is taken into account. Furthermore, we show that Okun’s law is geographically heterogeneous. Only in the more industrialized western regions of Indonesia does unemployment have a significant relationship with GDP growth.

  3. Regional economic structure and heterogeneous effects of monetary policy: Evidence from Indonesian provinces

    2021.3

     More details

The paper analyzes economic structure and monetary transmission. First, structural factor model vector auto-regression, SFAVAR, is estimated for all the 34 provinces of Indonesia and computed total impact and effectiveness of monetary policy based on impulse response function. Then, the impact and effectiveness of monetary policy is regressed on economic structure variables such as share of manufacturing and share of import to provincial production. The paper found economic structure plays a key role in monetary policy transmission mechanizm.
