    We conducted observational tests for realizing potential difference measurements using UAVs (drones) to enable Magnetotelluric (MT) method observations in difficult-to-observe areas, such as volcanic summits. The initially planned potential difference measurement tests using large drones could not be realized due to significant obstacles caused by security issues, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the surge in UAV prices. On the other hands, we succeeded the observations using medium-sized UAVs, including flight, landing, and electrode placement. We also confirmed that potential difference data can be obtained using a simple installation method from the UAVs. Therefore, we believe that large UAVs will enable us to achieve our intended observations.

    An electromagnetic monitoring system using precisely controlled frequency comb signals was constructed and was demonstrated at Kusatsu-Shirane volcano. Two transmitter dipoles were installed at the southern foot of the volcano, and electromagnetic receivers were placed around the peak. The distances between the transmitters and receivers are approximately 5 km. The current dipoles were in two directions one in the east-west direction and the other in the north-south direction, transmitting sine waves consisting of frequency sets with logarithmic equal intervals in the frequency range of 0.02 Hz to 4.6 Hz. By synchronising the function generator with a 10 MHz GPS signal, the transmitted signal could be repeated with high accuracy over a long period of time. The stacking method using the inverse of the noise as weights was found to be effective in extracting weak repetitive signal components from the received signals, and the response functions could be easily obtained.

    By the end of December 2020, we had installed submarine electromagnetic field instruments at 21 sites around Nishinoshima, and recovered 16 of these instruments by self surfacing. One additional OBEM was discovered on the coast of Iriomote Island, approximately 1,700 km away, in February 2021. The organisms attached to the OBEM and the drift simulation suggested that the time when the OBEM surfaced from the seafloor may coincide with the active period of the 2020 eruption of Nishinoshima.
    To clarify the shallow structure of the island portion of Nishinoshima, an aeromagnetic survey using a drone equipped with a total magnetometer was conducted over Nishinoshima in September 2019. The total magnetic field distribution was acquired at about 100 m above the ground surface. Remarkable magnetic anomalies around Nishinoshima were discovered, and the three-dimensional magnetization structure was obtained by the magnetic anomaly distribution.
