    It has been desired to design a steel efficiently for a required property. This demand drives a researcher to introduce simulation and machine learning into materials science. Machine learning could make a discrete data continuous. The forward regression analysis is followed by inverse analysis to suggest a potential microstructure or process to obtain a best performance. Computer vision remarkably accelerates microstructural segmentation that releases a researcher from burden of painting a micrograph. Subsequently, computer-detected microstructure is subjected to quantitative morphological analysis such as persistent homology.
    Microstructure simulation such as cellular automaton and phase field simulation is well-known to be useful for reproducing a microstructure under a given processing condition. However, it is still time-consuming. Then, virtual image generation using generative adversarial network (GAN) is recently received much attention to generate a lot of fake images. Particularly deep convolutional GAN (DCGAN) is very powerful for generating a high-quality fake image. If the fake microstructure generated by DCGAN is analyzed by finite element analysis method, strain-stress curve could be predicted without an experiment, which produces a big data of microstructure-property linkage.
    3D microstructural visualization is sometimes useful to gain insight of a microstructure. However, a conventional 3D method generally takes time and requires a special equipment. Recently, new GAN-based 3D microstructure reconstruction method “SliceGAN” was proposed. SliceGAN generates a 3D fake microstructure image from only one or three 2D images.
    This talk will highlight a recent progress of hybrid approach integrating experiment, simulation, and data science toward virtual or semi-virtual steel design.
