This paper extends Alexandr Chayanov's model of changing household demography (specifically the ratio of food consumers to food producers) and its influence on agricultural behavior so that it includes possible adverse effects of a rising ratio on nutritional status and early childhood mortality within the household. We apply the model to 35 years' worth of longitudinal demographic and economic data collected in the irrigated-rice growing village of Na Savang in northern Laos. When appropriate controls are included for other household variables, unobserved inter-household heterogeneity, and changes in local conditions and national policy over the study period, the analysis suggests that a unit increase in the household's consumer/producer ratio induces something like a nine-fold increase in the risk of death among household members aged less than five years. Monte Carlo simulation studies suggest that this may be an over-estimate but also that the effect is probably real and likely to be an important factor in household demography. At the very least, the results suggest that Chayanov's model still has theoretical relevance and deserves to be revived.

    BACKGROUND
Local migration in developing-world settings, particularly among rural populations, is an important yet understudied demographic process. Research on migration in such populations can help us test and inform anthropological and demographic theory. Furthermore, it can lead to a better understanding of modern population distributions and epidemiologic landscapes.
    OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential relationships between household-and individual-level factors on out-migration among Karen villagers along the Thai-Myanmar border.
    METHODS
We used a random effects hazard model to investigate the relationship of household consumer-producer (C/P) ratios, the number of household members, and an individual's sex on the odds of outmigration. We then used simulations in order to test the sensitivity of our model to our C/P ratio weighting scheme.
    RESULTS
We found that the number of household members is predictive of increased out-migration. Household C/P ratios were positively associated with out-migration in children but negatively associated with out-migration in working age adults. Finally, adult males were much more likely to move out of the household than were adult females.
    CONCLUSIONS
While household-level factors are important with regard to out-migration, the relationships between such household-level factors and out-migration are complex and vary by the individual's age and sex. Our study offers two novel concepts to household demography and migration studies. First, this study offers a new approach to evaluating weighting schemes for C/P ratios. Second, we show that household level factors are important at units of time (two-week intervals) that are not normally studied by demographers.

In this study, we surveyed the economic status and the natural resource uses of smallholders in Japan, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Then, we analyzed the livelihood strategies of smallholders in the context of regional economic integration.
In Japan, in order to increase the competitiveness of smallholders, it was seen that the scale of agricultural management was expanded by the settlement scale. On the other hand, it was revealed that smallholders in Vietnam and Laos have diversified their livelihoods from subsistence economy according to the demand for commercial crops from foreign countries due to regional integration. In Thailand, it was clarified that the traditional diet such as traditional fermented seafood of smallholders and their livelihoods have changed significantly due to changes in socio-economic development and occupational structure after the 1980s.

In this study, we analyzed the interrelationship among factors related to population dynamics, reproduction, and livelihood activities in two traditional small communities of Laos. The communities to be studied have different subsistence structure of rain-fed paddy farming and swidden farming.
As a result, residents' response to population pressure in the rain-fed paddy village was not intensification or mechanization of agriculture, but temporary migration to Thailand since the 1980s. Residents purchased paddies from neighboring villages with money earned by migrant works, and tried to balance self-sufficiency and cash income by further reducing the apparent population in the village. Meanwhile, in the swidden village, marital fertility rate was low at less than 4. From the result of examining the nutritional status of residents by diet survey, we suggested that the condition of low malnutrition may be the cause of low fertility rate.

This project has conducted in-depth ethnographic research into the dynamics of multilingualism that characterize the vast majority of Southeast Asian society. Based on intensive fieldwork,an ethnographic account of multilingualism has been developed, highlighting the networked approach to language use taken by local people in northern Laos as they face a rapidly regionalizing and globalizing economy. This research has highlighted not only the threats that globalization poses to the region's linguistic diversity, but also the important ways in which the use of multiple languages provides a social resource for those people. The insights gained from this dynamic region are valuable locally, as the linguistic implications of rapid socio-economic development have not yet been treated, and relevant more broadly, as the future of human diversity is a major concern in the consideration of society's trajectories in the 21st century.

SRI farming is becoming explosively popular in Southeast Asian countries. However, an appropriate cultivation management technology has not been established because the method is different for each country and farmers. In this study, we have developed the field monitoring technology for measuring the scientific parameters, such as the weather and the soil and underground water level. Then we have introduced the field monitoring system to four Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. From the viewpoint of Agricultural Engineering, we discussed the features of SRI farming, and examined the standard method of SRI cultivation. In addition, as an adaptation measure to climate change that is currently concern, we discussed the best solution that can be taken by the farmers in each country focusing on water resources and agricultural land management.

From four major concepts proposed in the Millennium Assessment (MA), namely, provisioning services, cultural services, supporting services and regulating services, inter-relations among these four elements are not illustrated and remain unknown. A new methodological approach in order to resolve this ambiguity, and to demonstrate integrated figures of human-nature interactions, was proposed. Benefits and risk analyses were examined, using several topics as to global trading, environmental deterioration, health and food risk, using examples of various communities in Southeast Asia. Through the analyses of benefits and risk as a set, it became clear that the notion of linkage-values to link four types of ecosystem services is effective tool. Also, it became clear that commons approach and Eco-historical approach are important in order to assess totally the benefits of ecosystem services and to understand the significance of the linkage-values.

This study focused on changes in livelihood of rural Southeast Asia during the last several decades and tried to identify sustainable humanosphere there. The case studies were carried out at the mountainous and lowland areas in Southeast Asia. The major conclusions are 1) rural livelihood in Southeast Asia are affected by both rapidly-changing governance and market and comparatively stable social and family networks; 2) the major driver of change is the connection between rural livelihood and global governance and market; 3) the major strategy of rural people to establish sustainable humanosphere is livelihood diversification at the household and community levels; 4) people confront higher risks when they simplify livelihood and/or change the whole set of livelihood. These suggest that identifying the structure of livelihood and examining possibility and risks accompanied by livelihood transition are the major research agenda of sustainable humanosphere studies at the regional level.

In the present study, we investigated the applicability of some of new technologies of geoinformatics to land use/cover analysis in small regions. Object-based land cover classification method worked to produce land cover maps in humid tropical regions, while digital surface model produced by satellite images provided sufficient information for the geographic analysis of land use patterns at community level. It was also reported that mechanisms of land use change in Asia-Pacific regions have both global and regional contexts.
