We study Japanese grammar, especially grammatical voice system such as passives, transitive/ intransitive verbs, potentials, spontaneous(non-volitional), etc., from diachronic and contrastive perspective.

    いわゆる「ジャンル」と「文法」の関係は，古くて新しい，常に問い直されている問題である。ジャンル（テクストタイプ・文体・レジスターなど）は，運用上の条件を象徴する類型として，日本語の文法を揺るがし，形づくり，とどめてきた。またその一方，文法（文タイプ）の中にはジャンル特有のものもあり，こうした文の意味・機能がジャンルの性質（そのジャンルらしさ）にも寄与している。様々な「ジャンル」へのまなざしから，日本語の文法や構文・文型との関わりについて自由に発題をいただき，文体と文法の関係を改めて考えてみたい。

    We demonstrated that the reason behind the absence of the agent-defocusing passive (inanimate subject passive) is that Japanese developed the non-volitional/potential construction with “rare” in the area where other languages have developed the agent-defocusing passive. Contrasting the voice system in Early Middle Japanese with the Spanish middle voice system (reflexive construction), we can observe that both languages have extended the grammatical voice construction from the spontaneous intransitive construction. However while the Spanish middle voice established the agent-defocusing passive which signifies that "the event (is caused to) occurs by someone", the Japanese "rare" established the non-volitional/potential construction, expressing that "the event occurs spontaneously to someone."
