This article examines how a socially-discriminated minority group in Ethiopia is trying to establish a new self-image, using religious context and denying their old image which has been made by the majority, under the social, economical and political changes of Ethiopia. The Manjo who live in the Kafa Zone, of southwestern Ethiopia, has been socially discriminated by the Kafa, the majority in the Kafa Zone. The Manjo were formerly hunters, though they are farmers now. Recently, most of the Manjo have started to convert to Christianity, particularly Protestantism, while the Kafa Zone is strongly influenced by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The Manjo explain the change of their life style, by referring to their conversion to Protestantism. However, actually, changes of social life among the Manjo are caused by political, economical and social changes of the Ethiopian state. In this article, I provide ethnographic descriptions of the social changes among the Manjo, thereby considering the possibility of practices by socially-discriminated minorities on their own initiative for improvement in the relationship with the majority groups.

The Austrian explorer Friedrich Julius Bieber (1873-1924) sent from his journeys many picture postcards, especially to his wife. They are greetings from Europe and Africa, particularly from Ethiopia. Bieber’s exciting way of life was inspired by his fascination for Africa, spirit for research and deep love for his family. His original impressions provide rich information-material of a world of the past. The 494 picture postcards reveal like in a picture-book with short descriptions in a fine humour Bieber’s even most intimate feelings.

Friedrich Julius Bieber's diaries about his 20-month travels to Ethiopia (1904, 1905, 1909) are an important historical record of the relations between the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the Ethiopian Empire under Emperor Menelik II. In 1905, Bieber called the “legendary land of his yearning, the province of Kafa”. In Kafa, he researched the country and its people intensively. The results of this research, documented in extensive records and photos, were made accessible to science by F. J. Bieber in his main work "Kaffa – An ancient Cushitic people in Central Africa, 1920/23".

(The Netherlands Institute in Morocco)主催で開催された国際ワークショップ “Taste of Knowledge,” “Taste of Knowledge Sequel”において研究成果を発表している。

The aim of this research was to investigate how the Cushitic Oromo people living in southwestern Ethiopia accepted Islam, by focusing on the lives and contributions of Muslim religious leaders. Life histories of prominent Muslim religious leaders were told and retold among those who venerate them, and interviews were conducted among these followers and those closely related to the religious leaders. Research on written manuscripts and hand-written documents, kept shelved in individual libraries, was also conducted, and these manuscripts, regarded as first-hand historical material, were digitalized by taking photographs. Creating a database of these digitalized images and conducting a further analysis of the contents will be a future task to be undertaken.

The aim of this study is to create a new ethnography as self and others representation. This study is based on the background that the lead researcher of this project plays an important role in her field in southwestern Ethiopia. She participates in many activities and events that happen in the village, and it would be quite inappropriate to ignore her role and not mention herself when she writes the ethnography of the village. From this, this research clarified the role and influence of the researcher on the social relations and practices of the villagers and examined how to write the figure of a cultural anthropologist into an ethnography as a monograph of representation of the self and others.

This study focuses on the political, social and religious roles of rural women in contemporary Ethiopia, taking an anthropological approach. Despite the cultural and religious diversity, Ethiopian societies shared a common feature of patriarchism. Women's rights and gender issues were regarded secondary not only inside the household and community, but also by policy-makers. The political changes brought about by the present EPRDF regime changed the tide and gender issues came to the fore, opening up opportunities for women to join the society not only as housewives and employed maids but as students, social workers, and politicians, occupations hitherto occupied by men. However, our research, the outcome of which was published in "Women of Contemporary Ethiopia"(2017, Akashi-shoten) reveals many issues remaining that need political and social attention.

This study focuses on how religion and religious activities are becoming central in the private and public lives of Ethiopians, and how they provide alternative options for the Ethiopians to form personal networks outside their local, ethnic or regional communities, under a federal regime which attempts to maintain its control on the society by a divide-and-rule system. The project consists of anthropologists conducting research mainly in southern Ethiopia, where "pagans (non-Christian, non-Muslim)" predominate. On the one hand, under the current globalization, new trends are being introduced in Christianity and Islam, instigating conflict, and on the other hand, indigenous folk religion and veneration of spiritual beings are both reviving and proliferating.
