    Fact-checking messages are shared or ignored subjectively. Users tend to seek like-minded information and ignore information that conflicts with their preexisting beliefs, leaving like-minded misinformation uncontrolled on the Internet. To understand the factors that distract fact-checking engagement, we investigated the psychological characteristics associated with users' selective avoidance of clicking uncongenial facts. In a pre-registered experiment, we measured participants' (N = 506) preexisting beliefs about COVID-19-related news stimuli. We then examined whether they clicked on fact-checking links to false news that they believed to be accurate. We proposed an index that divided participants into fact-avoidance and fact-exposure groups using a mathematical baseline. The results indicated that 43% of participants selectively avoided clicking on uncongenial facts, keeping 93% of their false beliefs intact. Reflexiveness is the psychological characteristic that predicts selective avoidance. We discuss susceptibility to click bias that prevents users from utilizing fact-checking websites and the implications for future design.

    <p>The purpose of this presentation is to shed light on what ethical governance must be, especially in comparison to risk management. To do so, the author will refer to the proposed AI regulation published by the European Commission in April 2021. It categorizes AI systems into those that create "unacceptable risk," "high risk," and "low or minimal risk," and proposes to impose different levels of legal regulation for each. The author will discuss what the proposed regulations consider to be risks, and how dealing with such risks relates to ethics, or where there is a difference. In conclusion, the author will argue that while risk analysis methods are based on predetermined evaluation criteria, ethics, in its essence, must include questioning and revising existing evaluation criteria. This implies that risk management and ethical governance must be complementary in methodology.</p>

    We are now faced with the wall of the diversity of values. We are often required to consider or respect the values of other people though, it is not easy to sense them since we tend to think within our scope of knowledge, experience, and imagination. We have worked on how to exchange values and achieve a synergetic effect among people. In this paper, we are presenting our prototype system, called AIR-VAS, aiming to support becoming aware of values in group discussion. AIR-VAS has been developed as the system which recognizes characteristic opinions of a group and shares them among all engaging groups on the discussion. The recognized and shared opinion is based on the values of the people of the group. Through the sharing of opinion, people can know the different viewpoints on the issue of the current discussion, so that AIR-VAS can provide stimulation to people for idea generation. We have developed AIR-VAS on the approach that visualizing statements, which are presented during a discussion, as the word co-occurrence network. We implemented opinion sharing as the process of the network re-construction including presented sub-network as an opinion of a certain group. According to the experimental usage of the developed system, we analyzed the relationship between discussion and visualized information, and discuss what information gives awareness.

    <p>Information technologies, such as IoT, artificial intelligence (AI), and virtual reality (VR), have seen so much development that there is now a wide variety of digital equipment incorporated into the infrastructure of daily life. From the agrarian society (Society 1.0) through the information society (Society 4.0), humankind has created farmlands and cities by structuring natural environments physically and has built information environments by structuring them informationally. However, despite the rapid development of information environments, it may be fair to say that the perspectives of the human body have not changed at all since the industrial revolution.</p><p>In the context of these recent technological developments, greater attention is being paid to human augmentation studies. These studies aim for a new embodiment of “human-computer integration,” one which can physically and informationally compensate or augment our innate sensory functions, motor functions, and intellectual processing functions by using digital equipment and information systems at will, as if they were our hands and feet. It has also been proposed that the technical systems that enable us to freely do what we want by utilizing human augmentations be called “JIZAI” (freedomization) as opposed to “automation.”</p><p>The term “JIZAI body” used in these studies represents the new body image of humans who will utilize engineering and informatics technologies to act at will in the upcoming “super smart society” or “Society 5.0.” In these studies, human augmentation technologies are an important component of JIZAI, but JIZAI is not the same as human augmentation. JIZAI is different in scope from human augmentation, as it aims to enable humans to move freely among the five new human body images: “strengthened sense” (augmented perception), “strengthened physical body” (body augmentation), “separately-designed mind and body” (out of body transform), “shadow cloning,” and “assembling.” In the society of the future where JIZAI bodies widely prevail, we will use technologies that enable us to do what we have failed at or given up due to limitations of our physical bodies. We believe that a future society, one in which aging does not reduce our capabilities but instead increased options give us hope, can be realized. This special issue, consisting of two review papers and twelve research papers, deals with diverse and wide-ranging areas, including human augmentation, robotics, virtual reality, and others. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all the authors and reviewers of the papers contributed to this special issue and to the editorial committee of the Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics for their gracious cooperation.</p>

    Today, an increasing number and variety of autonomous robots and software applications are working in many areas of our daily life. The fear is that their complicated interactions with one another and with humans might lead to unpredictable disasters. Thus, some researchers insist that we should enable artificial systems to autonomously make a `good' decision, i.e., a decision that respects society's values. Thus emerged a new academic field known as `artificial morality,' `
    artificial ethics', or `machine ethics', a discipline that attempts to implement human moral judgement and moral action into artificial systems. According to some researchers in this field, it is sufficient to make an artificial agent only apparently moral, without regard for whether they are fully moral in the same sense as human beings. Just as weak artificial intelligence (AI) can be sufficient for certain practical purposes, limited `functional morality' will be just as effective for certain practical purposes. Additionally, most projects concerning artificial morality are in line with mainstream artificial intelligence. In this paper, we critically consider whether this analogy between artificial intelligence and artificial morality holds true. We point out that one of the critical differences is that, while deploying artificial intelligence for certain practical purposes raises no question in general, to deploy artificial morality can be morally questionable in some situations.

    本研究の目的は，科学の成果に基づいた「道徳」概念の再検討である．近年，自然科学の様々な分野で道徳に関する新しい知見が得られている．また人工知能やロボティクスの分野では道徳的に判断し行動することのできる「人工道徳的行為者」の開発が行われている．本研究ではこれらの様々な科学的成果にフィットするように道徳概念をアップデートしつつ，科学的事実の解釈の妥当性を再検討し，さらに人工道徳の設計に役立つ道徳的判断・行為のモデルを構築する．この際，私たちは道徳を科学に還元することを目指すのではなく，科学によって道徳がどの程度まで説明され，何が説明されずに残されているのかを明確にすることを目指す．

    本講義では社会の構造と科学技術がどのように影響を与え合っているかを考え、議論する。

    本講義では，人間同士の「技術を介した共生」に加えて，「技術と人間の共生」という問題について考える．前者に関しては，使用する言語が異なる人々の共生を支援する機械翻訳について，自然言語処理の基本的な技術を含めて解説する．後者に関しては，近年発達の著しいロボット技術の社会的応用（ドライバーレスカー，ドローン，コンパニオンロボット，軍事ロボットなど）に関する倫理的問題について考察し，ディスカッションをする．

    現代の社会において科学・技術の影響は重大である一方、高度に複雑化した現代の科学・技術を正しく理解することは専門家以外には極めて困難であるように思われる。そこでこの授業においては科学と技術について深く考え、議論することを通じて、その本質を理解し、またそれらが私たちに与える影響を正しく評価する能力を訓練し、向上させることを目指す。
