Profile
# Teaching

I teach courses across several academic units: the Faculty of Letters, the Graduate School of Humanities, and the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

In the Faculty of Letters and the Graduate School of Humanities, I primarily teach phonetics within the Linguistics Program and serve as a research advisor for graduate students. Please note that most courses in the Master's program are conducted in Japanese, which is an important consideration for those intending to pursue graduate studies under my supervision.

At the Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences, I instruct Korean as a second foreign language and oversee the coordination of all Korean language courses as the chair of the Korean Language Subcommittee.

# Research

My primary research focus is on speech sounds. Initially grounded in linguistic phonetics, my interests have since expanded in two main directions: interdisciplinary fields beyond linguistic phonetics, often referred to as "phonetic sciences," and topics closely related to linguistic theories, such as the phonetics-phonology interface and laboratory phonology. Additionally, I have a keen interest in exploring sound change and variation from a sociolinguistic perspective.

My specific areas of study predominantly cover Japanese and Korean dialects. My research primarily addresses prosody, including aspects such as accent and intonation.

On the other hand, I have recently become interested in research that slightly deviates from speech and that could directly contribute to Korean language education. In particular, I have initiated a joint research project on the acquisition of Hangul (the Korean alphabet) by learners, incorporating perspectives from dyslexia research.

Additionally, I have participated—with varying degrees of commitment—in a variety of collaborative research projects, as follows:

- Voice quality in Japanese anime
- L1 phonological acquisition and motherese
- Voice of nursery school teachers
- International comparisons from a social and cultural psychological perspective, including psychological research on COVID-19

# Others

My wife and I both work full-time and have two children. I am particularly interested in exploring how work-life balance can be achieved at individual, workplace, and societal levels.

Japanese anime is noteworthy for being dubbed by professional voice actors and is unique in its vocal
characteristics. In this study, recordings were taken of students of voice actor course at a music college
reading short texts and anime lines in various voice
types. These recordings were analyzed by focusing on
the acoustic parameters related to voice quality. The
results showed that for a repeating task, when
students were asked to repeat an actual animated
voice, acoustic parameters such as F0 and sub-band
harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR) clearly captured the
differences between several anime characters. When
analyzing recordings of short texts in various voice
types, a similar trend was found, although not as
distinct as the repeating task. These results suggest
that multiple anime voice types have been established
in Japanese anime and voice quality helps to
    distinguish them.

We investigated the acquisition of Hangul by Japanese learners of Korean. Japanese-speaking participants listened to Korean syllables and selected the corresponding Hangul. Most participants scored very high on these items, although others struggled with simple items, suggesting that Hangul is not necessarily easy for everyone to learn. Questions with /w/ + vowels had lower accuracy.

Japanese anime cartoons are characterized by their unique voices, which poses an interesting research opportunity in the study of phonetics. To identify the acoustic characteristics of Japanese anime voices, we analyzed voice quality in Japanese anime. Six seiyu (vocal actor/actress) voices from two recent anime cartoons were included in our analysis. We also analyzed normal Japanese speech from the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ) as control data. Using openSMILE, software for voice quality analysis, we measured several acoustic parameters related to voice quality. The results demonstrate that anime has significantly different values than normal speech does in spectral slope-related parameters such as H1-A3, F1~F3 relative energy, alpha ratio, Hammarberg index, and spectral slope (0.5–1.5 kHz). The results suggest that an anime voice has stronger harmonics than normal speech does.

This study reviews the two types of tonal change recently found in contemporary Seoul Korean. The first is the emergence of tones according to the onset at the initial syllable of the accentual phrase. This phenomenon synchronizes the overlapping process of Voice Onset Time (VOT) distribution between lax and aspirated obstruents. Several previous studies have indicated that this dialect is in the middle stage of tonogenesis. The second type of tonal change is the emergence of the H tone in the word il, meaning “one.” The present study examines the possibility of interpreting the two phenomena as lexical diffusion.

This study investigated the phonetic characteristics of Japanese voiceless sibilants produced by Japanese learners whose native language is Bengali. We compared these to Japanese native speakers and measured M1 (weighted average) and M2 (standard deviation) via a spectral moment analysis. The analysis suggests that M1 is the main parameter for distinguishing /s/ and /ɕ/ in Japanese. On the other hand, the analysis reveals that learners cannot distinguish them clearly. In their production, the place of articulation of /s/ moves further back or approaches non-sibilant and /ɕ/ tends to be pronounced as retroflex.

This study aimed to investigate the phonetic characteristics and allophonic conditioning of Bengali voiceless sibilants. We measured M1 (weighted average) and M2 (standard deviation) through a spectral moment analysis of fricative spectra and the F2 of post-consonantal vowels with data collected from four native speakers. The analysis suggests that allophonic [s] typically appears at the onset of word-initial consonant clusters. It also reveals individual differences in allophonic conditioning. The comparison between our results and previous studies of Mandarin Chinese voiceless sibilants suggests that Bengali /ʃ/ is phonetically closer to Mandarin Chinese /ʂ/ than /ɕ/.

  18. Characters for which Korean language learners make mistakes frequently: A multiple-choice test analysis of Japanese learners of Korean International journal

Our ongoing research project aims to elucidate the process of Hangul learning and individual differences among Korean language learners in Japan, adopting the developmental dyslexia research perspective. In this presentation, we will report the results of a multiple-choice test analysis conducted as part of this project, focusing on characters for which learners are likely to make errors. The test was conducted on beginner-level learners of Korean as a second foreign language at Japanese universities. It consisted of seven questions, each of which played a monosyllabic Korean sound and presented a choice of four characters. Tests were conducted nine times during the semester. The questions consisted of the following seven patterns: (1) alternation of the basic vowel jamo, (2) alternation of the composite vowel jamo, (3) alternation of the basic consonant jamo, (4) alternation of the basic vowel jamo in the heavy syllable, (5) alternation of the basic consonant jamo (with fictional characters as options), (6) alternation of the composite vowel jamo (with fictional characters as options), and (7) random alternation of characters. Analysis of the test results, with particular attention to question type, revealed significantly lower percentages of correct responses in (2), (4), (5), and (6) question types compared to type (7). For question type (6), which had the lowest percentage of correct answers, an examination of error trends revealed that there was a particularly large number of cases of incorrectly selecting fictitious characters, with o replaced by u for the /wa/ sound. The results of the above errors may be explained by the concept of transparency among the "hypothesis of granularity and transparency" presented by Wydell & Butterworth (1999) in their study of developmental dyslexia. That is, the Korean phoneme /w/ may correspond to o or u in spelling, and there is no one-to-one correspondence between phoneme and jamo. This suggests that special attention should be paid to the teaching of composite vowels representing the /w/ sound in Korean language education. We would like to further examine the tendency of low-scoring groups after increasing the number of collaborators, and to investigate other cases where transparency may be relevant, such as the spelling of words involving morphophonological rules, in the future. By doing so, we would like to obtain further suggestions on how the teaching of the Korean writing system should be conducted according to learners’ characteristics.

This study examines how the acoustic features of the Chinese Mandarin sibilant consonants [c], [s], and [s]and their following vowels in CV syllables function as perceptual cues. The author conducted speech perception experiments using speech morphing syntheses. The differences in perceptual cues weighting between native speakers of Japanese who learning Chinese Mandarin as a second language and Mandarin native speakers were also compared. Mandarin native speakers used both consonant and vowel part information as perceptual cues according to the Chinese phonological system, whereas the learners tended to be more influenced by the acoustic features of consonants.

This preliminary study focuses on a phonetic variation of the velar nasal, which appears as an allophone of /g/ in several Japanese dialects. The author investigated two dialects, Gujo (Gifu prefecture) and Kitaibaraki (Ibaraki prefecture), both of which were considered to have the velar nasal according to previous studies. Tokens containing /g/ in the recorded data were analyzed through the inspection of spectrograms. As a result, the author identified two patterns, the typical velar nasal stop and the nasalized velar approximant. The latter pattern was acoustically characterized as the lack of formant damping, which is one of the most significant characteristics of a nasal stop. It is not clear whether this variation correlates with sociolinguistic factors such as region. More data are needed to answer this question.

A survey using online tests was conducted to explore individual differences among Japanese learners of Korean in their ability to learn Hangul and the challenges they faced with different types of characters. The test included seven distinct question types where participants listened to audio and selected the correct character from four options. The findings revealed that a small group of learners consistently achieved low scores, even on easier questions, indicating significant difficulties in learning Hangul. Additionally, certain character types, particularly combinations of the semivowel /w/ with a vowel, consistently yielded lower correct response rates. This suggests that the limited transparency of some Hangul characters likely influenced these results. A subsequent study also investigated the acquisition of word spellings governed by phonological rules.

From the perspectives of linguistics and media studies, we tried to see how the acoustic quality of the anime voice performed by voice actors is established as a sociocultural entity which is internalized in the contemporary Japanese society. Our main findings are as follows: (1) The anime voice has its own unique characteristics in the spectral slope, which indicates that it contains more harmonic components. (2) To see how the anime voice is being embedded in popular culture, it is necessary to consider voice actor's "performance" designing anime characters, anime fan's "acceptance (consumption)" of characters molded by voice actors, and "emotional engagement" that fans feel for voice actors. (3) Other fields of media studies and linguistics such as auditory culture studies or the theory of sound symbol could provide promising perspectives for discussing the interrelated nature of anime, voice, and voice actor's body.

In the present research project we conducted a real-time MRI-based investigation into the patterns of coordination of articulatory gestures for the sequences oral and nasal consonants. We examined the production of nasal plosion and found a cross-linguistic similarity across English, Fukui dialect of Japanese and Nogaku theater performers both in its articulation and acoustic features: simultaneous occlusions of the oral and nasal passages followed by an abrupt and large opening at the velopharyngeal port. In contrast, the production of “denasalization” of nasal consonants in Korean and Chaozhou Chinese exhibits a smaller velic opening followed by a very brief moment of simultaneous oral and velic closures, revealing asymmetry in the articulatory coordination in two types of consonant clusters in which the same two phonetic events (nasal and oral consonants) unfold in the opposite orders.

Kesa tsukutta ryoori o sutete simatta.
This Japanese sentence has two interpretations. In the first interpretation, kesa (“this morning”) modifies tsukutta (“cooked”); “I threw away dishes which I cooked this morning.” In the second interpretation, kesa modifies sutete simatta (“threw away”); “This morning I threw away dishes which I cooked (some days ago).” These two interpretations can be distinguished by compressing pitch in some parts. I call this phenomenon “local F0 downtrends.” Although this phenomenon is observed in many languages, there have been fewer studies on phonetic differences of local F0 downtrends and categorical (phonological) differences of this phenomenon among languages. This research project focused on local F0 downtrends in Japanese and Korean. Since I take more time than expected, I have not reported clear results yet.

  11. On the theory of language acquisition and change with the influence of media

The mass media broadcasting is often regarded as an influential cause of language change. This comes from the fact that people have observed a huge scale of nationwide de-dialectization or dialect levelling since the 1960’s after the advent of TV. However, sociolinguists have been skeptical about its effect, because there are few studies which successfully demonstrate the influence of media on language with a scientifically persuasive manner. This study attempted to provide some evidence in terms of variation theory, indicating that the media contents seem to be relevant to the tonal changes observed in Kagoshima Japanese, and to suggest a tentative view of language acquisition and language change under the influence of media.

This study considered the fundamental linguistic characteristics and variations in the Ibaraki and Chiba dialects. Particularly, we focused on analyzing the pronunciation of voiced stops and the postpositional particles. Examining the pronunciation of voiced stops, previous literature identified two types of pronunciation: One type is dominant in Tohoku; the other type is dominant in other parts of Japan. Our results revealed that Tohoku and most of Ibaraki share a characteristic pronunciation, whereas the dialect of a limited area in southwest Ibaraki features a coexistence of both types. Concerning the grammatical aspect, we proposed a new hypothesis on the origin of the particle “ge.”

In cooperation with East Asian researchers on cognitive neuroscience of language, we conducted experiments in Japan, China, and South Korea. The results revealed the relationship between linguistic diversity and human brain, and internationally published as journal articles or conference presentations. Among them, the result of an event-related potential study on honorific attitudes and expressions clarified the impact of cultural differences in language processing in the brain. It was presented at international conferences held in Germany (Berlin) and Japan (Tokyo and Hiroshima) as invited lectures or symposium lectures.

  15. Prosodic variation and language change observed in three regional dialects of Japanese

    Authorship:Other Grant type:Competitive

This study aimed to argue a possibility of language change that seemed to be taking place at the prosody level in regional dialects of Japanese by investigating variation of F0 movement in multiple accentual phrase(MAP). The results showed that (1) the younger generation in Sapporo and Fukuoka used narrower F0 range than the older counter part, (2) gender seemed the key factor for this variation in Kagoshima, and (3) stylistic difference was not statistically confirmed.
