We propose an efficient network upgrade and expansion method that can make the most of the next generation channel resources to accommodate further increases in traffic. Semi-flexible grid configuration and two cost metrics are introduced to establish a regularity in frequency assignment and minimize disturbance in the upgrade process; both reduce the fragmentation in frequency assignment and the number of fibers necessary. Various investigations of different configurations elucidate that the number of fibers necessary is reduced about 10-15% for any combination of upgrade scenario, channel frequency bandwidth, and topology adopted.

Hierarchical optical networks will be a viable solution in creating large-scale core and metro-ring networks of the future. The networks control optical network resources in granularity of both wavelength and waveband that consists of a fixed number of wavelengths; thereby, they can reduce signaling processing load and efficiently create virtual private networks. Meanwhile, as the network scale increases, multi-stage optical switch architecture is effective in reducing hardware scale and cost. In this paper, we develop a distributed wavelength path control plane for large-degree, hierarchical optical networks that consist of OCS nodes made by multi-stage wavelength selective switches (WSSs) and waveband selective switches (WBSSs). Along with the wavelength path signaling, optical switch control functions configure both WBSSs and WSSs. Accordingly, we need to develop optical switch control mechanism so that end-to-end wavelength path establishment/release can correctly configure WBSSs. As experimental results, we show that a wavelength path is successfully established/released.

Wide deployment of photonic networks that use WSS-based ROADM nodes causes substantial increase in the number of WSSs traversed by an optical path. This results in a severe impairment by the filter narrowing effect of WSSs. In this paper, we propose a novel frequency assignment and switching strategy named Grouped Routing that can greatly reduce the deficiency stemming from filter narrowing. The proposed Grouped Routing divides the available frequency range for optical paths into several sub-bands. Guard-bands are only inserted between the sub-bands and switching at each node is done with the sub-bands granularity. These sub-bands define pipes that connect nodes on their ways and works as virtual fibers. The omission of guard-band within the pipes can be possible by optimization of spectrum allocation within each band. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the spectral efficiency of the proposed networks is improved by 30%.

With the rise of novel services such as cloud computing and parallel computing, intra-datacenter traffic is growing rapidly and as a result optical switches that can process such large traffic volume with low latency and low power consumption will play a key role. For optical switches used in datacenter, high-speed switching and port-count scalability are required. Among various optical-switch configurations, a combination of delivery-and-coupling switches and wavelength-routing switches that utilize cyclic arrayed waveguide gratings was proposed. However, the maximum port count of the switch has not yet been discussed quantitatively. In this paper, we clarify the power budgets necessary for two sub-switch parts through numerical evaluations. Based on the simulation results, we optimally allocate the power budget to the two sub-switches and maximize the total switch scale under the practical condition.

We propose a novel configuration of finite-impulse-response (FIR) filters adapted by the decision-directed least-mean-square (DD-LMS) algorithm in digital coherent optical receivers, which enables stable operation under fast carrier-phase fluctuations. Computer simulations show that our scheme is more tolerant to phase noise and the frequency offset compared to the conventional scheme. The maximum symbol rate at which a digital coherent receiver can process is strictly limited by the operation speed of analog-to-digital converters. This speed limitation can be overcome by parallelization of the signal in advance of electronic analog-to-digital conversion. We have demonstrated that ultrafast optical multilevel-coded signals can be effectively demodulated with parallel optical time sampling. On the other hand, parallelization of the optical signal can also be conducted in the frequency domain. In this case, it is effective to divide signals into multiple subbands. In this article, we propose a digital coherent receiver having the subbanding function and investigate characteristics of such a receiver with computer simulations and experiments.

The use of multi-level modulation formats is one of the most effective ways of enhancing the spectral efficiency in optical fiber communication systems. Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is the best candidate among various modulation formats, because we can minimize the power penalty due to the increase in the level of modulation. However, such QAM signals require higher power to maintain the symbol distance on the complex plane. In contrast, the maximum optical power that can be launched into the fiber is strictly limited by fiber nonlinearity. In this paper, we demonstrate 1,000-km transmission of 1 -and 3-ch 40-Gbit/s 16-QAM signals, and investigate the impact of nonlinear effects in such a system.

The maximum symbol rate that a digital coherent receiver can process is strictly limited by the operation speed of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). This limitation can be overcome by employing a local oscillator (LO) pulsed at a subharmonic frequency of the symbol rate, which can perform time-division demultiplexing of the signal. In this paper, we demonstrate 1,000-Km transmission of a 80-Gsymbol/s (160Gbit/s) QPSK signal using such a receiver. We successfully demodulate the 160Gbit/s QPSK signal with a bit-error rate (BER) under the forward-error correction (FEC) threshold, and confirm its applicability to long-haul transmission systems.

Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is the best candidate among various modulation formats, because we can minimize the power penalty due to the increase in the level of modulation. On the other hand, the digital coherent receiver can demodulate any multi-level coded optical signals without relying upon a complicated optical phase-locked loop. In this paper, using such a digital coherent optical receiver, we demonstrate transmission of a 10-Gsymbol/s 16-QAM signal over a 100-km standard single-mode fiber.

The digital coherent receiver realizes phase synchronization in the digital domain and can demodulate any multilevel coded optical signals. However, the maximum symbol rate processed by such receiver is limited by the speed of electric ADCs and DSP. Although real-time operation at 10 Gsymbol/s using a digital coherent receiver has recently been demonstrated, it is still difficult to increase the symbol rate beyond 40 Gsymbol/s. In order to cope with this difficulty, we propose a novel scheme, which employs an LO pulsed at the subharmonic frequency of the symbol rate, enabling optical time-division demultiplexing of the signal at the digital coherent receiver. We demonstrate that the new type of digital coherent receiver operating at 10 Gsymbol/s can demodulate the aggregate symbol rate of 160 Gsymbol/s.

The amount of data traffic handled by photonic networks is increasing exponentially. Therefore, the capacity of photonic networks needs to be increased. To realize high-capacity networks, it is desirable to introduce ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing technologies to photonic networks. In such systems, however, the signal quality deteriorates due to spectral narrowing at each optical node, so the transmission distance and the number of node hops are strictly limited. In this research, we achieved a significant improvement in frequency-utilization efficiency based on spectral narrowing compensation, detailed analysis of transmission characteristics, and adaptive network control in ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing.

Making the best use of cutting-edge technologies such as; next-generation spatial division multiplexing on multiple-core fibers, scalable node architectures, advanced optical transmission that can maximally utilize frequency resources of fibers, and network architectures that enable transparent and seamless operations of national-wide and metro-area networks where transmission impairment is substantially reduced, we have achieved substantial network capacity enhancement, high energy efficiency, and excellent frequency utilization in photonic networks where routing operations are effectively conducted in the optical domain. Metrics in each technology, i.e. spatial multiplexing degree, maximum number of nodes that can be traversed by an optical path, maximum fiber degree of node, and frequency utilization efficiency has been substantially expanded so that they exceed the original target values. The product of the metrics yields 2,400 times of the present product value.
