We propose the use of liquid dimethyl ether (DME) as a solvent for extracting hydrocarbons and lipids from Botryococcus braunii Race B paste. The extraction yields and main elements of the extracts obtained from the B. braunii by our technique is nearly the same as by hexane Soxhlet extraction on dried mass. A qualitative analysis by silica gel thin layer chromatography suggested that DME also effectively extracted the specific hydrocarbons, botryococcenes from the wet B. braunii cells. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of DME extractes indicated the presence of a large amount of C32 to C34 botryococcenes the main components of B. braunii Race B. In contrast, hexane extracted not only C32 to C34, but also small amounts of C30 and C31 botryococcenes ?the minor components. The result shows that extraction differences between DME and hexane are not important.

Recently, the authors proposed a simple method for the extraction of lipid from high-moisture microalgae by using dimethyl ether (DME) without drying, cell disruption, and heating of the extractant. Herein, the versatility of this method was evaluated using several species of natural blue?green microalgae. Direct extraction of lipids from various species of high-moisture microalgae was successfully achieved using this method, with an extraction yield of 9.9?40.1% of the dry weight of the microalgae. The lipids extraction yield and molecular weight distribution achieved using the DME extraction method is comparable to those achieved using the widely used Bligh-Dyer's (BD) method. The lipids were characterized by low oxygen/nitrogen and high carbon/hydrogen content with a high calorific value of 33.8 MJ/kg, reflecting the high quality of the extracted oil.

In this study, a method for removing water from biosolids that uses dimethyl ether (DME) as an extractant was considered. This study evaluates the applicability of the DME dewatering method to biosolid cakes by using a DME flow-type experimental apparatus. It was found that a high dewatering ratio is clearly achieved by increasing the liquefied DME/biosolid ratio and lowering the liquefied DME linear velocity. As the liquefied DME/biosolid ratio was increased, the carbon content in dewatered biosolid showed a slight decrease and the TOC concentration in separated liquid increased significantly. Finally, the input energy Es to remove 1 kg of water from the biosolid cake, using both the DME dewatering method and the conventional drying method was estimated. The calculation shows that Es for the DME dewatering process is approximately a third of Es for the conventional thermal drying process.

The authors clarified freezing points of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) condensate for strongly attractive cylindrical nanopores by using molecular dynamics (MD), and by thermodynamically predicting the results without using any adjustable parameters. In contrast to the Clapeyron equation, the obtained freezing points exhibited a significant dependence on the equilibrium bulk phase pressure, forming a remarkably skewed curve on a p?T diagram. In this paper, for weakly attractive cylindrical nanopores, freezing point depression under tensile conditions, similar to the authors previous study. The MD results show that the authors previous thermodynamic model successfully predicted freezing point depression for a bigger pore. However, for a smaller pore, obtained freezing points (liquid-solid coexistence curve) remarkably close to the bulk vapor-solid coexistence curve, and could not be predicted by the thermodynamic model.

This article describes the dewatering of sewage sludge using liquefied dimethyl ether (DME), which clarified the effect of sludge type and its particle size. Changes in the heating value of the dewatered sludge were also examined. In addition, the change in dewaterability upon reuse of the liquefied DME was investigated experimentally. Regardless of the nature of the sludge, its dewatering behavior was similar. The amount of dewatered water could be increased by decreasing the diameter of the sludge cake. Complete drying of the sludge cake via DME dewatering resulted in retention of approximately 96% of the heating value (17.7 MJ/kg-sludge) of the original sludge cake dry base (18.4 MJ/kg db). The DME could be recovered after extraction, and reuse experiments showed that liquefied DME dewatering performance was unchanged after five reuses.

We proposed a method for the deodorising and dewatering of biosolids. In the proposed method, liquefied dimethyl ether (DME) was used as an extractant for odorous components and water. We developed a bench-scale experiment to almost completely deodorize and dewater biosolids by using liquefied DME at room temperature. The deodorized and dewatered biosolids have sufficient caloric density and can be used as a carbon neutral fuel.

In this study, we dewatered sub-bituminous coal mined in Warra, Indonesia, by using liquefied dimethyl ether (DME); no heating was required in this dewatering process. We achieved this dewatering both in a laboratory-scale experiment and using previously developed bench-scale equipment. We also examined the properties of the coal before and after dewatering and measured the amount of energy required by the equipment. We found that the maximum water extraction efficiency of liquefied DME was 98.3%. Further, the properties of the coal did not change after the dewatering treatment. The wastewater obtained by dewatering can be treated by existing wastewater treatment technologies. The energy consumed by the bench-scale equipment was 2069 kJ/kg-water; thus, this dewatering process using liquefied DME was confirmed to be effective and energy efficient.

The suitability of using dimethyl ether (DME) in dewatering coal for the treatment of sewage sludge has been found empirically to be highly effective. We investigated the effectiveness of a method involving the use of DME for dewatering electroplating sludge and tried to clarify the mechanism and characteristics of the dewatering process. Two zinc-containing sludge samples were examined and the effect of the volume of liquefied DME on the dewatering process was assessed. During the initial dewatering phase, the dewatering ratio is dependent only on the saturation degree of water in liquefied DME. In the later phase, it depends proportionally on the water concentration in the sludge and has a pattern that reduces the dewatering rate as dewatering is proceeded. Moreover, the dewatering pattern can be expressed using one dewatering rate constant, k. The water contained in the sludge samples was analyzed using thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis and the evaporation temperature range was determined. The water remaining in the samples after dewatering was found to be thermally stable and tightly bound. We further determined the amounts of total carbon and metal elements in the dewatered water and compared the concentrations to those specified in the Japan Water Pollution Quality Control Act. An important observation is that the dewatered water from the samples requires further processing before it can be discharged into the drainage system due to the presence of large amounts of Cu, Pb and Zn.

We investigated whether polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and water could be simultaneously removed from river sediment by solvent extraction using liquefied dimethyl ether (DME) as the extractant. DME exists in a gaseous state at normal temperature and pressure and can dissolve organic substances and some amount of water; therefore, liquefied DME under moderate pressure (0.6?0.8 MPa) at room temperature can be effectively used to extract PCBs and water from contaminated sediment, and it can be recovered from the extract and reused easily. First, we evaluated the PCB and water extraction characteristics of DME from contaminated sediment. We found that 99% of PCBs and 97% of water were simultaneously extracted from the sediment using liquefied DME at an extraction time of 4320 s and a liquefied DME/sediment ratio of 60 mL g-1. The extraction rate of PCBs and water was expressed in terms of a pseudo-first-order reaction rate. Second, we estimated the amount of DME that was recovered after extraction. We found that 91?92% of DME could be recovered. In other words, approximately 5?10% of DME was lost during extraction and recovery. It is necessary to optimize this process in order to recover DME efficiently. The extraction efficiency of the recovered DME is similar to that of the pure DME. From the results, we conclude that solvent extraction using liquefied DME is suitable for extracting PCBs and water from contaminated sediment.

In this study, we evaluated the applicability of the dimethyl ether (DME) dewatering method originally developed for high-moisture coal to superabsorbent polymer (SAP) and disposable diapers. It was found that liquefied DME successfully extracts water from SAP and disposable diapers. However, the polypropylene outer film and polyurethane used in diapers tended to dissolve in the liquefied DME and were subsequently released with the water discharged. These compounds are highly viscous, making it difficult to remove them from the drain outlet of the prototype. Therefore, the mechanics of the drain outlet should be considered in future studies.

We have examined the triple points of Lennard-Jones methane confined in slit-shaped nanopores, i.e. nanopores with zero excess potential energy, using a molecular dynamics technique developed by us in a previous study. The critical condensates in the pores were cooled in a stepwise manner and the triple points determined for different pore sizes. We observed that the triple point temperature was inversely related to the pore size, identical to the Gibbs-Thomson equation. Whilst the Gibbs-Thomson equation requires adjustable parameters, our triple point model could predict the pressure and temperature without the need for such parameters. As a consequence, our model demonstrates a higher degree of generalization than the Gibbs-Thomson equation.

The proposed technology is a new concept that aims at energy-efficient drying and cleanup for general purposes by the use of liquefied DME (dimethyl ether) gas. Large amounts of energy are required for the cleanup of the ground since the water contained in the soil hinders the extraction processes that use hydrophobic organic solvents. Therefore, we focus on the use of liquiefied DME, which is eco-friendly, as an extractant. The saturated pressure of DME is moderate?0.51 MPa at 20°C and 0.68 MPa at 30°C. Liquefied DME resolves high volume organic contaminants and water. Moreover, water can be easily separated from DME by flash distillation. This technology reduces the energy required for water-removal to half the latent heat of water. We almost completely removed water and other oily materials by using DME. DME was completely recycled and none of it remained in these materials. The world's first prototype of a DME deoiling/dewatering process is shown. The capacity of this system is 10 L. Because of the low normal boiling point (-25°C) of DME, it does not remain in the soil and it can thus be reused as an extractant. In this presentation, we show the general purpose deoiling and dewatering processes for several materials.

We applied DME (dimethyl ether)-based dewatering technology, which has been developed for highmoisture coal, to dewatered sewage sludge and successfully decreased the water content of sewage sludge from 78wt% to 30wt%. Moreover, we clarified that five minutes is enough to dewater sewage sludge as contact time. In addition, the dried sewage sludge was deodorized. Since the temperature of sewage water is approximately constant throughout the year, sewage water and air can be used as sources of heat for the evaporation and condensation of DME. Thus, DME-based dewatering technology can be thought of not only as a dewatering technology but also as a technology for recovery of heat from sewage water.

The capillary phase separation of a binary mixture of two truncated and shifted Lennard-Jones (LJ) Ar liquids in slit-shaped oxygen nanopores is examined. The LJ parameters?ε(Ar(A)?Ar(A))=ε(Ar(B)?Ar(B))=0.8ε(Ar(A)?Ar(B)) and 0.5ε(Ar(A)?O)?=?ε(Ar(B)?O)?were used to distinguish the two Ar liquids. The cut off distance for Ar was 3.5σ. We employed a molecular dynamics (MD) technique in which a pore space was connected with a bulk solution to easily determine the equilibrium bulk concentration. Liquid phase isotherms were obtained for pores with widths ranging from 5.5σ to 9.5σ, and the relation between the pore width and the phase separation concentration was determined. Each simulation was run until the bulk concentration attained equilibrium (1?2 μs). The MD results show that the Patrick model overestimates the bulk concentration for a given pore size. We proposed a modified Patrick model in which the pore wall potential is considered. In our model, the Gibbs-Tolman-Koenig-Buff effect is not considered for the interfacial tension since two surfaces of tension exist on both sides of the equimolar dividing surface of the two-Ar liquid phase. The two surfaces of tension neutralized Gibbs-Tolman-Koenig-Buff effect each other. The present simple model successfully describes the relation to prove its reliability.

Process design and energy requirement for a practical plant are investigated for an energy-saving drying (dewatering) process invented by the authors in 2002 for high-moisture porous materials. The basic concept of the process involves the extraction of water from a high-moisture porous material by bringing it in physical contact with liquefied dimethyl ether (DME) at room temperature. Water content of DME asymptotically increases to the saturation value and the high-moisture porous material is dried almost perfectly. DME from the DME-water mixture is vaporized by decompression. DME and water are separated by flash distillation. DME vapor is compressed and cooled in a heat exchanger, and the latent heat of condensation is reused to vaporize the DME in the heat exchanger. Multistage compression and multistage flash distillation are employed. After compression, the temperature of DME is less than 50?°C. Because specific heat ratio of DME is only 1.11, the energy consumption of the compressor is reduced. Considering the adiabatic efficiency of the compressor and the net thermal efficiency, the total energy for dewatering is about 1100 kJ per 1-kg-water-content of the material being dewatered This process has significant potential and is compact than the existing dewatering processes.

There is a growing need for the economical dewatering of high-specific-surface-area fuels containing large amounts of water, such as coal and sewage sludge. The principle underlying conventional dewatering methods is evaporation of the water content by heating the fuels to a high temperature, but this approach consumes a considerable amount of energy. The Central Research Institute of the Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) has developed a method for the extraction of this water through the use of dimethyl ether (DME), which liquefies at ordinary temperatures under the influence of a slight pressure. In this method, the water content in the fuel is extracted into the liquefied DME for separation from the fuel. After dewatering, the DME is depressurised, and subsequently vaporised, thereby leaving the separated water. Dewatering with an input energy of only 1109 kJ/kg water under ordinary conditions has been demonstrated theoretically.

We have shown the Lennard-Jones (LJ) phase diagram for a slit-shaped nanopore by molecular simulations and thermodynamically predicted the results with no adjustable parameter. With this success, LJ phase diagrams are predictable. In this study, the freezing of an LJ CH4 capillary condensate under a tensile condition in a nonstructural carbon nanopore with a cylindrical geometry was examined using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. We employ a unit cell in contact with a bulk vapor phase, which is useful for the determination of the bulk vapor pressure in equilibrium with the molecules in a pore. The MD simulation results show liquid-solid (amorphous) phase transitions with a variation in the bulk vapor pressure. The frozen particles are arranged in concentric circular regions along the wall similar to those reported by Maddox and Gubbins. The freezing points are determined from the variations in density, enthalpy, arrangement, and structural functions. The obtained liquid-solid coexistence points are found to exhibit a significant dependence of the freezing point on the equilibrium bulk vapor pressure, forming an extraordinarily skewed curve on the p-T diagram, in contrast to the bulk phase coexistence that is represented by an almost vertical line. The origin of the significant dependence is considered to be the Laplace effect on the capillary condensate similar to the case with a slit-shaped pore. A simple model, which the authors earlier presented for slit-shaped nanopores, successfully predicted the p-T relation of the freezing point for cylindrical nanopores as well.

Using molecular dynamics simulations, The authors studied the solid-vapor coexistence states of Lennard-Jones methane confined in slit-shaped graphite nanopores. Both the intrapore solid and extrapore vapor were simulated using a unit cell which they previously developed. Frozen critical condensates in the pores were cooled stepwise, and the equilibrium vapor pressure was determined at each temperature. The obtained solid-vapor coexistence curves were remarkably lower than that of the bulk phase. Their thermodynamic model successfully predicts the simulation results without the need to introduce any adjustable parameter, and thus proves its reliability.

Sublimation phenomena of Lennard-Jones fluids in slit-shaped nanopores were examined. Vapor-phase pressure at which a solid phase forms in a pore at a constant temperature is determined by the authors' molecular dynamics technique. The obtained phase-boundary pressure is remarkably lower than that of the bulk phase. A simple model of the sublimation is presented, which successfully predicts the molecular dynamics results with no adjustable parameter. Thus, a whole Lennard-Jones phase diagram in slit-shaped nanopores can now be predicted.

The aim of this study is to prevent the hardening of coal ash during transportation from power plants and storage. In order to prevent the coal ash from hardening, humidification and mixing with additives were applied. As a result, (1) humidification of coal ash at 40°C with air of 50-90%RH, the hardenability of coal ash greatly decreased because sulfur trioxide on the surface of the coal ash reacted with alkaline components such as calcium carbonate by humidification, (2) miximg coal ash with lime stone is the most effective method in reducing the hardenability because it reacts with the sulfur trioxide. The addition of 1-10% lime stone is necessary to prevent hardening.

In this study, hardening phenomena of coal ash beds in high-humidity condition are examined. We employ a diffusion simulation in clarifying the distribution of condensed water in coal ash beds, in which water vapor is absorbed into sulfur trioxide adhered on the surface of coal ash particles. Aqueous sulfuric acids solution formed by the absorption is in equilibrium with the ambient water vapor. The diffusion rate of water vapor is proportional to the difference between the pressure and ambient water vapor pressure. The simulation successfully describes the results of previous experiment, at a constant temperature, with the variations in the equilibrium moisture and particle diameter of coal ash. Moreover, it is clarified that the relationship between water content and hardening phenomena is very similar for various coal ashes, with a correction of particle diameter of coal ash and the volume of condensate bridging between particles.

In this study, we examined influences of temperature, humidity and coal ash characteristics on hardening phenomena of coal ash beds. Coal ash beds were moistened and hardened at a high relative humidity and we found that hardening is prevented by removing sulfur trioxide on the surface of coal ash, e. g., by washing it in water or by contacting it with ammonia gas. Therefore, sulfur trioxide on the surface of coal ash plays an important role on the hardening of coal ash bed. In addition, moistened coal ash bed was hardened more by drying. The mechanism of hardening is such that alkaline materials in coal ash react with sulfuric acid formed by the adsorbed moisture and sulfur trioxide to produce sulfates by the neutralization reaction. Crystalline of sulfate, which is formed by drying, interconnects coal ash particles.

We report the results of a molecular dynamics simulation that looked for the triple point of Lennard-Jones fluid in slit-shaped nanopores. The simulation method employed for this purpose is able to maintain vapor?liquid coexistence in a nanopore at a specific equilibrium bulk-phase pressure. The triple point is the freezing point of the critical condensate. The triple-point temperature could be higher or lower than the bulk triple point, depending on the pore size. This is thought to be due to two opposing factors: the elevating effect of the pore-wall potential energy, and the depressing effect of the capillary condensate's tensile condition. Because of the cancellation, the deviation of the triple-point temperature from the bulk triple-point temperature was not considered significant. The pressure of the triple point, however, was significantly different from that of the bulk triple point. A simple model to describe the triple point is developed and shown to agree well with the results of the simulation. The importance of the two factors in nanoscale pores, which cannot be described by the classic Gibbs?Thomson equation, is emphasized.

Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations have been conducted to investigate freezing phenomena of Lennard-Jones (LJ) methane confined in cylindrical nanopores of reduced pore diameter ranging from 4.5 to 9.5 with saturated vapor as equilibrium bulk condition. The arrangement of the LJ particles in frozen state is found to form a hexagonal array within each concentric circular layer. Nonmonotonic dependence of freezing point against pore diameter, which is observed in strongly attractive pore made of carbon, is interpreted as a result of competition between geometrical hindrance effect of a wall's shape and compression effect of a wall's attractive potential. Geometrical hindrance effect, which originates from excess energy of cylindrical frozen state relative to the fcc lattice state, is clarified to become stronger for smaller pore size. The latent heat is also smaller for smaller pore size. We model the shift of freezing point in cylindrical pore considering the geometrical hindrance effect, and its reliability is verified successfully through comparison with the GCMC results.

An improved condensation model for the estimation of pore-size distribution in the range of nanometers is examined. In the authors' previous paper, the model proved its reliability in computer experiments employing the molecular dynamics technique. The model is tested here in a real experimental system with a MCM-41-like ordered mesoporous silicate, FSM-16. The study includes how to find the adsorbate-solid interaction strength, which is taken into account as an additional contribution for condensation other than the Kelvin effect. The true pore size of the material is separately determined to be 3.2 ± 0.2 nm by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observation, and by a colloidal particle adsorption method. The conventional model for condensation, the Kelvin model, underestimates the pore size of FSM-16 to be 2.5 nm from the nitrogen isotherm. The present model successfully predicts the pore size to be 3.4 nm, and proves its reliability in the real experimental system. The effect of the pore wall's potential on the capillary coexistence relation is further discussed comparing ordered mesoporous silicates and the usual silica materials.

The effect of equilibrium vapor-phase pressure onto freezing of a simple fluid in a nanopore is examined. We employ a molecular dynamics (MD) technique in a unit cell with imaginary gas phase, which has the benefit of easy determination of equilibrium vapor pressure. The method is shown to give consistent results with those by the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method, and to have better feature of smaller degree of hysteresis between freezing and melting. The MD simulations showed liquid?solid phase transitions, at a constant temperature, with the variation in the equilibrium vapor-phase pressure below the saturated one. Thus-determined solid?liquid coexistence lines exhibited significant dependence of the freezing point against small changes in the bulk?phase vapor pressure, which implies the importance of tensile effect on freezing in nanopores. The capillary effect on the shift in freezing point was successfully described by a simple model based on continuum and isotropic assumption, even in a pore as small as 2 nm in width.

We modeled condensation phenomena within cylindrical nanopores as a possible replacement for the Kelvin model that underestimates nanometer order pore sizes. The proposed model follows the simple concept of a continuum assumption similar to that for the Kelvin model. The difference was in the introduction of the contribution of the pore-wall potential and the curvature-dependent surface tension in our model. A molecular dynamics (MD) technique developed by the authors for isotherm determination was employed to test the concept and the model. Several isotherms for N2-like Lennard-Jones (LJ) particles in a silicate-like cylindrical pore with various diameters from 2 to 4 nm were obtained through MD simulations, and a relation between pore diameter and critical condensation pressure was determined. The present model successfully described the relation to demonstrate its reliability. The validity of the proposed model was examined also from the aspect of the shape of the meniscus and the pressure profile in the condensed phase, and gave fairly good agreement.

Single-electrode transient behavior was measured mainly during the discharging process for a model cell of electric double layer capacitor with nano-porous carbon electrodes and reference electrode. Apparent conductivity in the cell, which we call " effective conductivity," is determined with approximation of current in transient behavior to a one-dimensional electrophoretic model. A comparison of effective conductivity with conductivity of bulk solution suggests an interesting mechanism of transfer of electrolyte ions. The difference in transient behavior between various electrolyte ions was not conspicuous in spite of distinctive differences in conductivity of each bulk solution. The large pore diameter of the carbon electrode results in rapid transient behavior and such an electrode should be suitable for rapid charge and discharge. The effect of origin of carbon electrode is found to be significant to bring considerable differences in discharge rate. However, the difference in transient behavior that was caused by materials for carbon electrode becomes smaller for lower concentrations of electrolyte solution. Effective conductivities for all experiments do not directly reflect conductivities of bulk solution of each electrolyte. This implies that electrolyte ions are transported based not only on the electrophoretic effect, but also on a mechanism similar to surface diffusion.
