Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution is a leading health risk factor for children under- 5 years, especially in developing countries. South Asia is a PM2.5 hotspot, where climate change, a potential factor affecting PM2.5 pollution, adds a major challenge. However, limited evidence is available on under-5 mortality attributable to PM2.5 under different climate change scenarios. This study aimed to project under-5 mortality attributable to long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 under seven air pollution and climate change mitigation scenarios in South Asia. We used a concentration-risk function obtained from a previous review to project under-5 mortality attributable to ambient PM2.5. With a theoretical minimum risk exposure level of 2.4 μg/m3, this risk function was linked to gridded annual PM2.5 concentrations from atmospheric modeling to project under-5 mortality from 2010 to 2049 under different climate change mitigation scenarios. The scenarios were developed from the Aim/Endues global model based on end-of-pipe (removing the emission of air pollutants at the source, EoP) and 2 °C target measures. Our results showed that, in 2010–2014, about 306.8 thousand under-5 deaths attributable to PM2.5 occurred in South Asia under the Reference (business as usual) scenario. The number of deaths was projected to increase in 2045–2049 by 36.6% under the same scenario and 7.7% under the scenario where EoP measures would be partially implemented by developing countries (EoPmid), and was projected to decrease under other scenarios, with the most significant decrease (81.2%) under the scenario where EoP measures would be fully enhanced by all countries along with the measures to achieve 2 °C target (EoPmaxCCSBLD) across South Asia. Country-specific projections of under-5 mortality varied by country. The current emission control strategy would not be sufficient to reduce the number of deaths in South Asia. Robust climate change mitigation and air pollution control policy implementation is required.

Lightning can cause natural hazards that result in human and animal injuries and fatalities, infrastructure destruction, and wildfire ignition. Lightning-produced NOx (LNOx), a major NOx (NOxCombining double low lineNO+NO2) source, plays a vital role in atmospheric chemistry and global climate. The Earth has experienced marked global warming and changes in aerosol and aerosol precursor emissions (AeroPEs) since the 1960s. Investigating long-term historical (1960-2014) lightning and LNOx trends can provide important indicators for all lightning-related phenomena and for LNOx effects on atmospheric chemistry and global climate. Understanding how global warming and changes in AeroPEs influence historical lightning and LNOx trends can be helpful in providing a scientific basis for assessing future lightning and LNOx trends. Moreover, global lightning activities' responses to large volcanic eruptions such as the 1991 Pinatubo eruption are not well elucidated and are worth exploring. This study employed the widely used cloud top height lightning scheme (CTH scheme) and the newly developed ice-based ECMWF-McCAUL lightning scheme to investigate historical (1960-2014) lightning and LNOx trends and variations as well as their influencing factors (global warming, increases in AeroPEs, and the Pinatubo eruption) in the framework of the CHASER (MIROC) chemistry-climate model. The results of the sensitivity experiments indicate that both lightning schemes simulated almost flat global mean lightning flash rate anomaly trends during 1960-2014 in CHASER (the Mann-Kendall trend test (significance inferred as 5 %) shows no trend for the ECMWF-McCAUL scheme, but a 0.03 %yr-1 significant increasing trend is detected for the CTH scheme). Moreover, both lightning schemes suggest that past global warming enhances historical trends for global mean lightning density and global LNOx emissions in a positive direction (around 0.03 %yr-1 or 3 %K-1). However, past increases in AeroPEs exert an opposite effect on the lightning and LNOx trends (-0.07 % to -0.04 %yr-1 for lightning and -0.08 % to -0.03 %yr-1 for LNOx) when one considers only the aerosol radiative effects in the cumulus convection scheme. Additionally, effects of past global warming and increases in AeroPEs in lightning trends were found to be heterogeneous across different regions when analyzing lightning trends on the global map. Lastly, this paper is the first of study results suggesting that global lightning activities were markedly suppressed during the first year after the Pinatubo eruption as shown in both lightning schemes (global lightning activities decreased by as much as 18.10 % as simulated by the ECMWF-McCAUL scheme). Based on the simulated suppressed lightning activities after the Pinatubo eruption, the findings also indicate that global LNOx emissions decreased after the 2- to 3-year Pinatubo eruption (1.99 %-8.47 % for the annual percentage reduction). Model intercomparisons of lightning flash rate trends and variations between our study (CHASER) and other Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models indicate great uncertainties in historical (1960-2014) global lightning trend simulations. Such uncertainties must be investigated further.

Estimates of ground-level ozone concentrations have been improved through data fusion of observations and atmospheric chemistry models. Our previous global ozone estimates for the Global Burden of Disease study corrected for bias uniformly across continents and then corrected near monitoring stations using the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) framework for data fusion. Here, we use the Regionalized Air Quality Model Performance (RAMP) framework to correct model bias over a much larger spatial range than BME can, accounting for the spatial inhomogeneity of bias and nonlinearity as a function of modeled ozone. RAMP bias correction is applied to a composite of 9 global chemistry-climate models, based on the nearest set ofmonitors. These estimates are then fused with observations using BME, which matches observations at measurement stations, with the influence of observations declining with distance in space and time.We create global ozone maps for each year from 1990 to 2017 at fine spatial resolution. RAMP is shown to create unrealistic discontinuities due to the spatial clustering of ozone monitors, which we overcome by applying a weighting for RAMP based on the number of monitors nearby. Incorporating RAMP before BME has little effect on model performance near stations, but strongly increases R2 by 0.15 at locations farther from stations, shown through a checkerboard cross-validation. Corrections to estimates differ based on location in space and time, confirming heterogeneity. We quantify the likelihood of exceeding selected ozone levels, finding that parts of the Middle East, India, and China are most likely to exceed 55 parts per billion (ppb) in 2017. About 96% of the global population was exposed to ozone levels above theWorld Health Organization guideline of 60 mg m-3 (30 ppb) in 2017. Our annual fine-resolution ozone estimates may be useful for several applications including epidemiology and assessments of impacts on health, agriculture, and ecosystems.

Global lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) led to air pollutant emission reductions. While the COVID-19 lockdown impacts on both trace gas and total particulate pollutants have been widely investigated, secondary aerosol formation from trace gases remains unclear. To that end, we quantify the COVID-19 lockdown impacts on NOx and SO2 emissions and sulfate-nitrate-ammonium aerosols using multiconstituent satellite data assimilation and model simulations. We find that anthropogenic emissions over major polluted regions were reduced by 19 to 25% for NOx and 14 to 20% for SO2 during April 2020. These emission reductions led to 8 to 21% decreases in sulfate and nitrate aerosols over highly polluted areas, corresponding to >34% of the observed aerosol optical depth declines and a global aerosol radiative forcing of +0.14 watts per square meter relative to business-as-usual scenario. These results point to the critical importance of secondary aerosol pollutants in quantifying climate impacts of future mitigation measures.

Nitrous acid (HONO) is an important atmospheric gas given its contribution to the cycles of NOx and HOx, but its role in global atmospheric photochemistry is not fully understood. This study implemented three pathways of HONO formation in the chemistry-climate model CHASER (MIROC-ESM) to explore three physical phenomena: gas-phase kinetic reactions (GRs), direct emission (EM), and heterogeneous reactions on cloud and aerosol particles (HRs). We evaluated the simulations by the atmospheric aircraft-based measurements from EMeRGe-Asia-2018 (Effect of Megacities on the Transport and Transformation of Pollutants on the Regional to Global Scales), ATom-1 (atmospheric tomography), observations from the ship R/V Mirai, EANET (Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in eastern Asia)/EMEP (European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme) ground-based stationary observations, and the OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument). We showed that the inclusion of the HONO chemistry in the modelling process reduced the model bias against the measurements for PM2.5, NO3-/HNO3, NO2, OH, HO2, O3, and CO, especially in the lower troposphere and the North Pacific (NP) region. We found that the retrieved global abundance of tropospheric HONO was 1.4gTgN. Of the three source pathways, HRs and EM contributed 63g% and 26g% to the net HONO production, respectively. We also observed that reactions on the aerosol surfaces contributed larger amounts of HONO (51g%) than those on the cloud surfaces (12g%). The model exhibited significant negative biases for daytime HONO in the Asian off-the-coast region, compared with the airborne measurements by EMeRGe-Asia-2018, indicating the existence of unknown daytime HONO sources. Strengthening of aerosol uptake of NO2 near the surface and in the middle troposphere, cloud uptake, and direct HONO emission were all potential yet-unknown HONO sources. The most promising daytime source for HONO found in this study was the combination of enhanced aerosol uptake of NO2 and surface-catalysed HNO3 photolysis (maxST+JANO3-B case), which could also remedy the model bias for NO2 and O3 during EMeRGe. We also found that the simulated HONO abundance and its impact on NOx-O3 chemistry were sensitive to the yield of the heterogeneous conversion of NO2 to HONO (vs. HNO3). Inclusion of HONO reduced global tropospheric NOx (NO + NO2) levels by 20.4g%, thereby weakening the tropospheric oxidizing capacity (OH, O3) occurring for NOx-deficit environments (remote regions and upper altitudes), which in turn increased CH4 lifetime (13g%) and tropospheric CO abundance (8g%). The calculated reduction effect on the global ozone level reduced the model overestimates for tropospheric column ozone against OMI spaceborne observations for a large portion of the North Hemisphere. HRs on the surfaces of cloud particles, which have been neglected in previous modelling studies, were the main drivers of these impacts. This effect was particularly salient for the substantial reductions of levels of OH (40g%-67g%) and O3 (30g%-45g%) in the NP region during summer, given the significant reduction of the NOx level (50g%-95g%). In contrast, HRs on aerosol surfaces in China (Beijing) enhanced OH and O3 winter mean levels by 600g%-1700g% and 10g%-33g%, respectively, with regards to their minima in winter. Furthermore, sensitivity simulations revealed that the heterogeneous formation of HONO from NO2 and heterogenous photolysis of HNO3 coincided in the real atmosphere. Nevertheless, the global effects calculated in the combined case (enhancing aerosol uptakes of NO2 and implementing heterogeneous photolysis of HNO3), which most captured the measured daytime HONO level, still reduced the global tropospheric oxidizing capacity. Overall, our findings suggest that a global model that does not consider HONO heterogeneous mechanisms (especially photochemical heterogeneous formations) may erroneously predict the effect of HONO in remote areas and polluted regions.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations and profiles were retrieved from ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) observations during January 2017-December 2018 at three sites in Asia: (1) Phimai (15.18°N, 102.5°E), Thailand; (2) Pantnagar (29°N, 78.90°E) in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP), India; and (3) Chiba (35.62°N, 140.10°E), Japan. Retrievals were performed using the Japanese MAX-DOAS profile retrieval algorithm ver. 2 (JM2). The observations were used to evaluate the NO2 and HCHO partial columns and profiles (0-4 km) simulated using the global chemistry transport model (CTM) CHASER (Chemical Atmospheric General Circulation Model for Study of Atmospheric Environment and Radiative Forcing). The NO2 and HCHO concentrations at all three sites showed consistent seasonal variation throughout the investigated period. Biomass burning affected the HCHO and NO2 variations at Phimai during the dry season and at Pantnagar during spring (March-May) and post-monsoon (September-November). Results found for the HCHO-to-NO2 ratio (RFN), an indicator of high ozone sensitivity, indicate that the transition region (i.e., 1 < RFN < 2) changes regionally, echoing the recent finding for RFN effectiveness. Moreover, reasonable estimates of transition regions can be derived, accounting for the NO2-HCHO chemical feedback. The model was evaluated against global NO2 and HCHO columns data retrieved from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) observations before comparison with ground-based datasets. Despite underestimation, the model well simulated the satellite-observed global spatial distribution of NO2 and HCHO, with respective spatial correlations (r) of 0.73 and 0.74. CHASER demonstrated good performance, reproducing the MAX-DOAS-retrieved HCHO and NO2 abundances at Phimai, mainly above 500 m from the surface. Model results agree with the measured variations within the 1-sigma (1σ) standard deviation of the observations. Simulations at higher resolution improved the modeled NO2 estimates for Chiba, reducing the mean bias error (MBE) for the 0-2 km height by 35 %, but resolution-based improvements were limited to surface layers. Sensitivity studies show that at Phimai, pyrogenic emissions contribute up to 50 % and 35 % to HCHO and NO2 concentrations, respectively. Copyright:

The formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) associated with lightning activities (hereinafter designated as LNOx) is a major source of NOx. In fact, it is regarded as the dominant NOx source in the middle to upper troposphere. Therefore, improving the prediction accuracy of lightning and LNOx in chemical climate models is crucially important. This study implemented three new lightning schemes with the CHASER (MIROC) global chemical transport and climate model. The first lightning scheme is based on upward cloud ice flux (ICEFLUX scheme). The second one (the original ECMWF scheme), also adopted in the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) forecasting system, calculates lightning flash rates as a function of QR (a quantity intended to represent the charging rate of collisions between graupel and other types of hydrometeors inside the charge separation region), convective available potential energy (CAPE), and convective cloud-base height. For the original ECMWF scheme, by tuning the equations and adjustment factors for land and ocean, a new lightning scheme called the ECMWF-McCAUL scheme was also tested in CHASER. The ECMWF-McCAUL scheme calculates lightning flash rates as a function of CAPE and column precipitating ice. In the original version of CHASER (MIROC), lightning is initially parameterized with the widely used cloud-top height scheme (CTH scheme). Model evaluations with lightning observations conducted using the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) and Optical Transient Detector (OTD) indicate that both the ICEFLUX and ECMWF schemes simulate the spatial distribution of lightning more accurately on a global scale than the CTH scheme does. The ECMWF-McCAUL scheme showed the highest prediction accuracy for the global distribution of lightning. Evaluation by atmospheric tomography (ATom) aircraft observations (NO) and tropospheric monitoring instrument (TROPOMI) satellite observations (NO2) shows that the newly implemented lightning schemes partially facilitated the reduction of model biases (NO and NO2), typically within the regions where LNOx is the major source of NOx, when compared to using the CTH scheme. Although the newly implemented lightning schemes have a minor effect on the tropospheric mean oxidation capacity compared to the CTH scheme, they led to marked changes in oxidation capacity in different regions of the troposphere. Historical trend analyses of flash and surface temperatures predicted using CHASER (2001-2020) show that lightning schemes predicted increasing trends of lightning or no significant trends, except for one case of the ICEFLUX scheme, which predicted a decreasing trend of lightning. The global lightning rates of increase during 2001-2020 predicted by the CTH scheme were 17.69% C-1 and 2.50% C-1, respectively, with and without meteorological nudging. The un-nudged runs also included the short-term surface warming but without the application of meteorological nudging. Furthermore, the ECMWF schemes predicted a larger increasing trend of lightning flash rates under the short-term surface warming by a factor of 4 (ECMWF-McCAUL scheme) and 5 (original ECMWF scheme) compared to the CTH scheme without nudging. In conclusion, the three new lightning schemes improved global lightning prediction in the CHASER model. However, further research is needed to assess the reproducibility of trends of lightning over longer periods.

This study gives a systematic comparison of the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) version 1.2 and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) QA4ECV tropospheric NO2 column through global chemical data assimilation (DA) integration for the period April-May 2018. DA performance is controlled by measurement sensitivities, retrieval errors, and coverage. The smaller mean relative observation errors by 16g% in TROPOMI than OMI over 60g gN-60g gS during April-May 2018 led to larger reductions in the global root-mean-square error (RMSE) against the assimilated NO2 measurements in TROPOMI DA (by 54g%) than in OMI DA (by 38g%). Agreements against the independent surface, aircraft-campaign, and ozonesonde observation data were also improved by TROPOMI DA compared to the control model simulation (by 12g%-84g% for NO2 and by 7g%-40g% for ozone), which were more obvious than those by OMI DA for many cases (by 2g%-70g% for NO2 and by 1g%-22g% for ozone) due to better capturing spatial and temporal variability by TROPOMI DA. The estimated global total NOx emissions were 15g% lower in TROPOMI DA, with 2g%-23g% smaller regional total emissions, in line with the observed negative bias of the TROPOMI version 1.2 product compared to the OMI QA4ECV product. TROPOMI DA can provide city-scale emission estimates, which were within 10g% differences with other high-resolution analyses for several limited areas, while providing a globally consistent analysis. These results demonstrate that TROPOMI DA improves global analyses of NO2 and ozone, which would also benefit studies on detailed spatial and temporal variations in ozone and nitrate aerosols and the evaluation of bottom-up NOx emission inventories.

Efforts to stem the transmission of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) led to rapid, global ancillary reductions in air pollutant emissions. Here, we quantify the impact on tropospheric ozone using a multiconstituent chemical data assimilation system. Anthropogenic NOx emissions dropped by at least 15% globally and 18 to 25% regionally in April and May 2020, which decreased free tropospheric ozone by up to 5 parts per billion, consistent with independent satellite observations. The global total tropospheric ozone burden declined by 6TgO3 (∼2%) in May and June 2020, largely due to emission reductions in Asia and the Americas that were amplified by regionally high ozone production efficiencies (up to 4 TgO3/TgN). Our results show that COVID-19 mitigation left a global atmospheric imprint that altered atmospheric oxidative capacity and climate radiative forcing, providing a test of the efficacy of NOx emissions controls for co-benefiting air quality and climate.

We have developed a regional scale air quality simulation using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) - Community Multiscale Air Quality Model (CMAQ) to assess the suitability of such an advanced modeling system for predicting the air quality of Bangladesh and its surrounding region. The Regional Emission Inventory in Asia (REAS) was used as the emission input in this modeling approach. Both meteorological and chemical model performance were evaluated with observations including satellite data. Comparison between simulated and observed meteorological parameters revealed that the WRF can generate the necessary meteorological inputs for CMAQ. Comparison of observed and simulated concentrations of different air pollutants revealed that CMAQ greatly underestimates the concentrations of key pollutants. Comparison with satellite observations revealed that CMAQ reproduces the spatial distribution of NO2 with some underestimation in Bangladesh and India. The simulated AOD and satellite-retrieved AOD showed good temporal and spatial agreement mutually, with a correlation coefficient of 0.58. Sensitivity simulation using higher horizontal resolution emission data made by re-gridding the REAS inventory with the population distribution improved the CMAQ performance. Nevertheless, CMAQ underestimated the pollutant concentrations in Dhaka. Uncertainties in the emission inventory and in the lack of time variation in emissions input mainly contributed to the model underestimation. Model predictions show that 36-72% PM10 and 15-60% PM2.5 in Dhaka might be contributed from brick kiln emissions in monthly average of January 2004. The chemical composition of PM2.5 showed that the considerable amounts of secondary aerosols in Dhaka and carbonaceous components (particularly organic carbon) are most responsible for the model underestimation. Results suggest that improvements of emission inputs and more detailed sensitivity analysis of CMAQ model are important to assess the reliability and applicability of WRF-CMAQ modeling system in this region.

A data assimilation system has been developed to estimate global nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions using OMI tropospheric NO2 columns (DOMINO product) and a global chemical transport model (CTM), the Chemical Atmospheric GCM for Study of Atmospheric Environment and Radiative Forcing (CHASER). The data assimilation system, based on an ensemble Kalman filter approach, was applied to optimize daily NOx emissions with a horizontal resolution of 2.8° during the years 2005 and 2006. The background error covariance estimated from the ensemble CTM forecasts explicitly represents non-direct relationships between the emissions and tropospheric columns caused by atmospheric transport and chemical processes. In comparison to the a priori emissions based on bottom-up inventories, the optimized emissions were higher over eastern China, the eastern United States, southern Africa, and central-western Europe, suggesting that the anthropogenic emissions are mostly underestimated in the inventories. In addition, the seasonality of the estimated emissions differed from that of the a priori emission over several biomass burning regions, with a large increase over Southeast Asia in April and over South America in October. The data assimilation results were validated against independent data: SCIAMACHY tropospheric NO2 columns and vertical NO2 profiles obtained from aircraft and lidar measurements. The emission correction greatly improved the agreement between the simulated and observed NO2 fields; this implies that the data assimilation system efficiently derives NOx emissions from concentration observations. We also demonstrated that biases in the satellite retrieval and model settings used in the data assimilation largely affect the magnitude of estimated emissions. These dependences should be carefully considered for better understanding NOx sources from top-down approaches.

    We estimated the source-receptor relationship
for surface O3 in East Asia during the early 2000s using
a method that tags O3 tracers according to their region of
chemical production (tagged tracer method) with a global
chemical transport model. The estimation demonstrated the
importance of intracontinental transport of O3 inside East
Asia as well as of the transport of O3 from distant source
    regions.

This study assesses the roles of aerosols in the past/present changes in Asian climate and monsoon, isolating impacts of individual aerosol components in the framework of the CCSR/NIES/FRCGC climate model (MIROC). Many recent studies suggest that increases in anthropogenic aerosols such as black carbon and sulfate may play a crucial role in Asian climate change as observed. Our previous studies also demonstrate the significance of aerosol increases (sulfate and carbonaceous aerosols) in the simulated precipitation changes in Asia (e.g., Arai et al., 2009). In this study, we particularly focus on the changes of nitrate and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) which are tightly linked to land use change in regions like Asia, but not treated in our previous aerosol studies. We newly introduced simulation of nitrate aerosol in our climate model. Our simulation shows that there are anomalously high concentrations of nitrate aerosol in South Asia (particularly around India and Bangladesh), coming from abundant ammonium and less sulfate components in this region. In India, free tropospheric mixing ratio and number concentration of nitrate in fine mode are both larger than those of sulfate in winter to early summer. Our study estimates large cooling (1-2 W m-2) in South Asia due to nitrate increase in terms of direct radiative forcing for 1850-2000. This result suggests nitrate aerosol may play an important role in the observed changes in Asian monsoon. In addition, we estimate changes in biogenic VOCs emissions associated with land use change during 1850-2000; biogenic VOCs like terpenes are important precursors of SOA. We estimate significant reduction (50-70%) in terpenes and other VOCs emissions in the central Eurasia, North America, and Asia due to intense cultivation and deforestation in these areas. Responding to the VOCs decreases during 1850-2000, our model calculates large reduction of SOA, leading to a positive direct radiative forcing (warming) of 0.5-1 W m-2 in Sou

We examine contributions from various source regions to global distributions and
budgets of tropospheric ozone (O3) in the context of intercontinental transport, using
tagged tracer simulation with a global chemical transport model. For tagging O3, we
consider regional separation of the model domain on the basis of the distributions of O3
chemical production. We define 14 polluted source regions (14 tracers) in the boundary
layer (North America, Europe, China, etc.) and 8 regions (8 tracers) in the free
troposphere; O3 production in the remaining (remote) tropospheric region and O3 transport
from the stratosphere are also tagged as separate tracers.

This study improves the estimate of global distributions of hydroxy radical (OH) which controls oxidation and removal processes of various compounds in the atmosphere, and evaluates the recent change in the atmospheric oxidation capacity and its controlling mechanism. The estimate of OH distributions is improved by validating and elaborating the calculations of clouds, aerosols, and stratospheric ozone with combining a chemistry climate model simulation with the observational data as from satellite measurements. This study further investigates contributions of individual controlling factors of OH changes such as anthropogenic and natural emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), in addition to the distributions of clouds, water vapor (H2O), and ozone.

Measurements of carbonaceous aerosols were conducted in the Antarctic coasts and southern ocean. Black carbon (BC) concentrations at Syowa Station ranged in <0.2-63.8 ng m-3 (median, 1.8 ng m-3; mean, 2.7 ng m-3) in 2005-2016 and had maximum in September-October. No long-term trend of BC concentrations was clear during our measurement period. Seasonal features of EBC concentrations showed a maximum in September-October. BC was originated from biomass burning and combustion of fossil fuels in South America and southern Africa. BC at the Antarctic coasts were transported from South America and southern Africa mostly via lower troposphere and partly via upper troposphere and downward motion in the Antarctic Circle. The absorption Angstrom exponent (AAE) showed clear seasonal features and was associated with mixing states of BC and organic aerosols supplied from biomass burning and oceanic bio-activity.

We conducted tropospheric chemistry reanalysis calculations by assimilating multiple data sets from multiple satellite sensors. The reanalysis calculations were conducted using three different global chemical transport model and an ensemble Kalman filter technique that simultaneously optimises the chemical concentrations of various species and emissions of several precursors. The optimisation of both the concentration and the emission fields is an efficient method to correct the entire tropospheric profile and its year-to-year variations, and to adjust various tracers chemically linked to the species assimilated. Using the multiple chemical transport models, we demonstrated the importance of forecast model performance on tropospheric chemistry data assimilation.

This study investigated global budget of atmospheric methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), and inferred separate factors of their temporal changes. In the framework of a land-ecosystem and trance gas exchange model, estimations of global emissions of CH4, N2O, and biogenic VOCs were optimized. For the changes in OH which govern the CH4 sink in the atmosphere, individual controlling factors of OH changes were quantified and examined by a set of sensitivity simulations using an atmospheric chemistry model. More accurate estimation of global OH changes was also performed by our developed data assimilation system with the satellite measurements of global atmospheric chemistry. This study also investigated and tested N2O budget including emissions, photolysis, stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE). Furthermore, underlying mechanisms and controlling factors of recent CH4 and N2O changes are revealed in detail by using past reproduction simulations (hindcasts) for CH4 and N2O.

This study investigates long-range transport of air pollutants from major source regions and its changes during the past three decades, using a chemistry transport model with tagged tracers. Our model simulation suggests that long-term increases in ozone and aerosols including black carbon(BC) are largely attributed to the changes in anthropogenic emissions. Our study also reveals significant roles of long-term climate change as associated with the global warming in ozone changes in the tropics and southern hemisphere. In this study, changes in ozone distribution associated with climate change including ENSO are further analyzed by isolating impacts of transport and chemistry processes with a tagged tracer approach. Our results show that ozone changes associated with ENSO are mainly due to change in transport, while long-term ozone changes as with the recent warming are largely influenced by chemical processes. For BC in polar regions, we quantify individual contributions of increased long-range transport from South America, Africa, Europe, and North America. To validate the global model results, this study also investigates air quality in Asia and inflow of air pollutants to Asia using a regional air quality model(WRF-chem).
