    Based on continuous GPS observation around the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, central Japan, we found significant lateral heterogeneity in crustal deformation style along the tectonic line, which suggest complex behavior of the active fault. In addition, geodetic strain rate is found to have a good correspondence with the electronic registivity structure in the lower crust, implying lower crustal processes may control the stress accumulation process of the active faults.

    The dense continuous GPS network of Japan, now called GEONET, has been operated since 1994 by the Geographical Survey Institute. GEONET provides precise daily coordinates of all the stations, with which displacement rates and strain rates are calculated nationwide. Various characteristics of tectonic deformation in the Japanese Islands have been revealed. GEONET is also quite useful in earthquake studies, precisely detecting co-seismic, post-seismic, and inter-seismic deformation signals. These observations are utilized to infer physical processes at earthquake sources. Slow slip events on plate boundaries have been found from GPS data. Such slow events provide
    an important constraint on the mechanism of faulting. On the other hand, there has been no success in detecting pre-seismic deformation. Lack of a precursory signal before the 2003 Tokachi-Oki (M8.0) earthquake has posed
    a serious question to short-term earthquake prediction. GEONET enables a good linkage between monitoring and modeling studies, opening a possibility of practical data assimilation. For further contribution to earthquake studies,
    it is necessary to continue GEONET with high traceability on the details in observation and analysis.

    Using continuous GPS data, I estimated interplate coupling along the Sagami Trough subduction zone in the southern Kanto district. The shallow part of the plate boundary is considered to be fully locked and accumulating stress. In 1996, southeastern off the Boso Peninsula, anomalous slow deformation was detected and it is interpreted as a result of slow fault rupture on the plate boundary surface. Comparison of these results demonstrates that strongly locked patch and slow slip region show compensative distribution each other, supporting the basic concept of the asperity model.

    Continuous GPS observation data in the Japan Islands are processed and the nationwide crustal deformation velocity field as well as the strain rate field are presented. In addition to the large strain region along the plate boundary, we identified an inland zone of large strain rate and named it Niigata-Kobe Tectonic Zone (NKTZ), which may have a significant implication for generation processes of inland large earthquakes.

    We analyzed conventional triagulation as well as leveling data in the southwestern Japan to resolve the coseismic fault slip distribution of the 1944 Tonankai and the 1946 Nankaido earthquakes. Our analysis showed that onland geodetic data do not have resolving power for slips on the offshore segments. Estimated slip distribution indicates there are mainly three patches of large coseismic slip, southeast and south off shore the Kii Peninsula, and south of the Shikoku Island.

    地殻変動は、応力の変化(弾性変形)やその絶対値(粘性流動)に依存して生じると考えられてきた。しかし、地殻変動は、応力の変化や絶対値だけでなく、実はその履歴にも依存して生じるのではないかと考えられる。本研究では、2011年東北地方太平洋沖地震前後の地殻変動データを解析することによって、地殻変動が応力の履歴に依存することを示すと共に、南海トラフ巨大地震が近付きつつある西日本で今後の地殻変動がどのようになるのかその理論的予測を示し、南海地震前に発生が懸念される内陸地震に備える一助とする。
    地殻の変形様式としては、弾性・粘性・塑性の3つが通常考えられている。例えば,測地データは,この3つの変形様式からの寄与を全て含む一方,山脈の発達など地質学的に累積する変形については,弾性変形は寄与しない.そのような事情から,観測された測地データの弾性歪みと非弾性歪みへの分離,さらには,非弾性歪みの粘性歪みと塑性歪みへの分離が重要な課題となっている.
    Meneses-Gutierrez and Sagiya (2016)は,GNSSデータの解析に基づき,新潟神戸歪み集中帯では顕著な非弾性歪みが2011年東北地方太平洋沖地震(以後,東北沖地震と略称)の前後を通して累積していることを明らかにした.本研究では,さらに進んで,東北沖地震前の方が後よりも明確に歪み速度が速い点に着目した.具体的には,まず東北沖地震前後で観測された歪み速度データを長波長成分と短波長成分に分離することを通じて,非弾性歪み速度を粘性歪み速度と塑性歪み速度に分離する式を導出した.次いで,観測されたGNSSデータから長波長成分を具体的に見積もり差し引くことで,東北沖地震前の塑性歪み速度として約30 nanostrain/yr,地震前後の粘性歪み速度として同じく約30 nanostrain/yrの値を得た.一方,長波長の歪み速度は,地震前が約60 nanostrain/yr,地震後が約 -75 nanostrain/yrであった.ここで,プラスは短縮をマイナスは伸張を表す.このように,測地観測データから粘性歪み速度と塑性歪み速度の分離に成功した研究はおそらく世界初である.また,地震前の方が非弾性歪み速度が顕著に速いという本研究の結果は,良く知られた日本列島の歪み速度パラドックスの問題に新たな観点を投げかける.本研究の成果は,2019年地球惑星科学連合大会および同年開催のIUGGで発表したことに加え,既に論文としてもまとめEarth Planets Space誌に公表した(Fukahata, Meneses-Gutierrez and Sagiya, 2020).
    本研究課題で最大の目標としていた測地データからの塑性歪みの分離に成功し,その研究成果について学会発表をしたのみならず既に論文としても公表されたため.
    新潟神戸歪み集中帯のデータ解析から得られた結果について改めて見直すとともに,歪み速度パラドックスの問題について研究を進める.さらに,近畿地方など他の地域でどのような地殻変動が観測されているか,また今後どのような地殻変動が観測されると予測されるか研究を進める.

    Regarding research on absolute stress, inelastic deformation, and related medium properties, we have conducted important joint research with overseas researchers who have achieved worldwide achievements in these fields belonging to Caltech and Stanford University. We also invited world-famous researchers such as Professor Emeritus Rechard H. Sibson and Professor Paul Segall to train young researchers by conducting intensive lectures and seminars. In addition, short-term and long-term dispatches of researchers and postdocs to research institutes with the world's most advanced equipment and technology such as Utrecht University, and the initiation of researchers from those institutes in the short term, data analysis and results could be extensively examined.

    Until about 10,000 years ago there were multiple large lakes in the Andean plateau region. As a result of climate change these lakes dried up resulting in the formation of salt flats such as the famous Uyuni area. There are numerous shorelines cut into the slopes surrounding the basin. These shorelines are excellent paleo horizontal markers. The elevations of these shorelines were measured using GPS surveying in 27 localities and the ages estimated by dating carbonate sediments associated with the shorelines. The results show that the same group of shorelines locally shows uplift of about 20 m that occurred over about 10,000 yrs. The main uplift is found in the center of the basin suggesting it was caused by a reduction in water level and load on the crust resulting in inflow of weak mid crustal rocks.

    日本列島においては、測地学的な時間スケールと地質学的な時間スケールで歪み速度が一致しないという問題が未解決である。また、水平変動と山地の隆起運動についての統一的な扱いが行われておらず、火成活動に伴う地殻の成長や浸食・削剥と地殻変形との関係も明らかとなっていない。このように、島弧地殻の変形過程の全体像はいまだに明らかになっていないことは、島弧地殻のダイナミクスを解明していく上でも大きな障壁となっている。本計画研究では、測地学、地震学、地質学、火山学等の手法・知見を駆使して様々な時空間スケールにおける地殻変形過程を明らかにするとともに、様々な時空間スケールでの変形過程に関するモデルを構築し、島弧地殻の変形を統合的に理解する枠組みを提示することを目的とする。本研究では、(1)異なる時空間スケールの変形を統一的に理解するための枠組みの提示する、(2)水平変動と上下変動を総合的に扱う、(3)断層運動に伴う力学的な変形に加え、火成活動に伴う変形を考慮する、などの点で、日本列島の変形に関する従来の議論を刷新し、日本列島の変形過程に対して統一的な描像を提示するものである。本計画研究の成果を応力場の情報と組み合わせることで、列島の変形応答に関する知見が得られる。また、本計画研究の成果は日本列島における地震発生サイクルなど様々な現象の数値モデルを構築したり、列島内部の地震発生ポテンシャルを評価したりする上で重要な拘束条件を提供すると期待される。

    We estimated that the magnitude of the differential stress that causes large earthquakes in the concentrated deformation zone in Japanese Islands is less than half of the value that has been believed so far. We estimated that high pore pressure water upwelling from the mantle causes earthquake swarms that occurred in the regions of little seismicity. From the analysis of crustal deformation after the Tohoku-Oki earthquake, we succeeded in separating elastic deformation (spring-like deformation) and inelastic deformation (clay-like deformation). We found that the reason why the Pacific coast rises after the Tohoku-Oki earthquake, while the mountain range settles down in the central part is the presence of a soft region in the basement of the mountain range. We found that the uplift along the Pacific coast is settled in the middle of the Tohoku-oki earthquake cycle and that the subsiding rate increased 100 years before the earthquake occurrence.
